Twilight & New Moon Scripts Inspired by Brokeback Mountain, Romeo & Juliet and Dexter

200811301519.jpgTwilight Screenwriter Mellisa Rosenberg, who has already completed the script for New Moon, says that the scripts so far have taken notes from Brokeback Mountain and Romeo and Juliet:

MTV: I would think the greatest challenge for you was to portray a romance that “Twilight” fans consider to be so powerful and epic. Where did you go for inspiration?

Rosenberg: Well, “Romeo and Juliet” is an obvious comparison. I discovered [after reading "Twilight" that Meyer] uses “Romeo and Juliet” quite heavily in “New Moon.” And this is going to sound a little crazy, but “Brokeback Mountain” was a great model of forbidden love.

MTV: So when it came time to portray the Edward/Bella romance, you thought about Heath and Jake?

Rosenberg: Well, “Brokeback Mountain” for two reasons: One, the short story [that was the basis] for “Brokeback Mountain” is beautiful, pure, very small — 20 or 40 pages — and the writers of “Brokeback Mountain” [the movie] would take one sentence, one four-word sentence, and it would become a story line. It would become a character. It was such a beautiful adaptation. I learned a great deal from reading that book and then watching the movie. It taught me a lot about adapting. But I had the opposite challenge with “Twilight” than they had with “Brokeback” — with “Brokeback,” they had to let it grow and breathe. I had to condense a great deal. For instance, with the James character and the evil vampires — taking what is really only the last 25 percent of the [novel] and bringing it forward. There were a couple moments like that where you go, “OK, wait a minute, [Meyer] is just suggesting this. But let’s let it play.”

MTV: But as far as the Edward/Bella romance is concerned, you see similarities to the “Brokeback” relationship?

Rosenberg: Yeah, it was just so poignant, and the forbidden-love element, that you have this deep yearning and passion and yet you have to keep it secret — to want to be with each other and to have to stay away on some level. So “Brokeback,” for me, was a great model for how to structure the romance in the story.

This woman is an idot. Catherine is taking a lot of heat for Twilight, but Melissa should be getting a scolding as well as fired. She has no clue what romance is. This is getting rediculous.
FIne, let her mess it all up. I am tired of hearing their excuses, and nobody holding them accountable, and offering resolutions to rectify the mess she created. I keep telling myself that I am just not bothering with this movie series anymore, but I keep coming back with the "hope" that maybe they will recognize the error of their ways, but they only have a one track mind. They are content with the teenage mediocry love story, when in reality it's much more. I give up. Do whatever you want. I just don't care anymore. Hack the script, make Edward fly, ;0(, , put all storylines to the back and make it the big action thriller you're so desperate to have it be. Roll a fat one for Kristen before she does all of her takes, just to be sure she is numb and void, let Nikki get more urban with the head shaking, and butt shaking. Destroy the little that left. I am not interested anymore. I should have to get all bent out of shape over a movie. I recogize how stupid and over-reacting I have become. I will just move on to another series, and others books. I am Twilighted out. Best of luck.

I have nothing to say. I guess we just have to sit and wait and hope that the movie hasn't been ruined by her bizarre interpretation.

I can't believe they are letting Melissa write new moon. she says it's already done. how good will it be then if it's already done. She really messed up twilight. She should have kept james and them repressed like the book and brought out more of edward and bella's relationship. In the movie, it was like all the sudden they were in love. Granted some of the movie was good, but I was mostly dissapointed in the building up of the relationship with bella and all the cullens, especially alice.
  • i think she did a good job writting twilight and i know she will do great writting new moon the movie

I really hope the next one is better. The first time i saw Twilight it was omg so frickin perfect, but the more i watch it the more I find problems with it. For instance one of my friends saw the movie then read the book and he mentioned that the movie does not really show Bella and Edward's building relationship. He's right, it seems like it goes to fast and is just an action movie. When i brought the dvd, the director was all oh we cut some scenes because it was slowing the movie down. LOVE takes time to build. I feel like the movie Twilight and the book Twilight are the same, but different. They turned a love story into a fast paced action drama. Most people that were so hardcore into the movie were fans and they should have really focused on making a movie for the fans on the Romantic novel Twilight. Like i said i really hope this movie show's more about Bella's pain over edward and they show that they are like closley connected before he goes off and leaves her. but of course they are probably gonna freakin mess that up too by showing edward ...not that i dont like edward but edward was gone the cullens were gone. but ok whatever i will watch it anyway and probably still love it no matter how much it's screwed up. sorry for the rant!

I agree with the majorty here on this Melissa Rosenberg did a awful job with twilights adaptation. Apparently she has never been in love. but more to the point James didn't even speak till the last couple of chapters, same as victoria, she never even said a word she just hissed and growled was all, the bella and edward scenes didn't even make since half the time because they were so out of order. If she can't do better with New Moon then I believe its time Summit finds a new Screenwriter because I don't know if she'll feel like writing anything else if some of these fans gets ahold of her. Humm. wonder if I could do any better lol. Seriously though if it doesn't go over well, then i believe we should petition summit to fire her and tell her to go back to reading her gay books, i can say that because i am same sex oriented
  • Victoria
How do you petition? I'm totally in, that woman ruined it!!!

Oh dear. Seriously. I was glad to hear they changed directors and I believe Taylor Lautner was the best cast actor in the first film. (very glad they didnt completely shoot themselves in the head by changing him).
However, I had issues with the script of Twilight in a number of places-where it was like a badly made spoof of an originally wonderful deep love portrayed through a teenager's eyes. Having read this interview I only feel like my previous issues with Ms Rosenberg have grown considerably. As Eclipse is my personal favourite in the Twilight saga, I can only hope that the script is seriously improved by the time they write Eclipse...perhaps it is time for Melissa Rosenberg to follow Catherine Hardwicke off the set...

oh please! just give ya all a break.Twilight is one of the best movies not a story book ,thats why it is called Movie and is full of acting, and the comprehension of Acting is a lie thats reveals the truth, watch the movie, don't like it,stop and keep reading the book or the other way round.watch it,is the best, love it .from the angle where i looked at it ,Twilight Movie is a real big deal and New Moon will be more or less than expected! Mellisa her job right, kol tov!all da best!.
  • Victoria
