New Moon Director Chris Weitz on the set of The Golden Compass

Looking to learn a bit more about director Chris Weitz since he’ll be directing New Moon? MTV compares him to the new kid at school with the renewed fan attention–

Despite fan fears that a male director might not be able to connect with the love-struck mind-set of Bella Swan, filmmaker Chris Weitz is probably feeling quite close to his main character right now, as he enters pre-production for “New Moon.”

He’s the new kid at Forks High, similarly hoping that he’ll make friends and become a straight-A student. Now, in order to talk the millions of “Twilight” fans into taking him to the prom, he’s begun cozying up to them in biology class.

It covers Weitz’s history in and out of film, and the impact he might make on the Twilight franchise. Of particular note is his troubled role leading Golden Compass, which flopped so hard that the rest of the sequels will not be made, and in fact did so poorly that it caused its studio to collapse:

Weitz wrestled with the project for more than a year, was replaced by Anand Tucker, and then returned after Tucker resigned in 2006. After a lengthy production period spiked with controversies over Weitz’s fantasy-vs.-religion tightrope walking, “The Golden Compass” was oddly marketed as a “Narnia”-esque family film without religion and a Daniel Craig action flick that only had the actor in a handful of scenes. Not surprisingly, the mixed messages (and lack of an ending) contributed to the $180 million film pulling in only $25 million at the box office during its opening weekend in 2007.

“When I saw the film of ‘Twilight,’ I was alternately entranced and left hungry for more,” Weitz said this week of his newest passion project. “I was also struck by the extraordinary passion for the characters, story and theme that was evident in the people sitting in the seats around me. My job is to live up to that devotion.”

Unfortunately, the final moments of “Golden Compass” tease sequels that will never be made, as the movie’s failure was largely seen as a contributing cause to the collapse of its studio. The Nicole Kidman film did do solid business overseas, however, and Weitz is now taking on another fantasy franchise in “New Moon” — albeit one with as little as a quarter of the “Compass” budget.

Ben Barnes May Possibly Play Aro in New Moon

As we reported earlier, Michael Copon is in the running for the role as Jacob Black in New Moon:

MTV News can confirm that 26-year-old “Scorpion King 2″ actor Michael Copon [pronounced "COPE-on"] is one of several actors Weitz is considering to play the new, larger Jacob Black. A representative for Copon told us that they’re making a full effort to land the high-profile gig. And in a bit of 21st-century self-publicity, the actor has even recently updated his Facebook status with messages like: “Michael Copon [is] in a Twilight Zone!” and “Michael Copon is the older Jacob Black!”

Copon’s representative confirmed to MTV News that the Facebook page is run by the actor himself and that those are indeed his words.

Approached for comment on Lautner’s omission from the “New Moon” press release, Summit confirmed that it was not a typographical error. “The casting decision in regards to the character Jacob Black has yet to be made,” a representative told MTV News.

Among the other roles still to be cast is the Volturi leader Aro. Weitz is taking a serious look at Ben Barnes for this role, who recently played Prince Caspian in the Chronicles of Narnia:

With the buzz building for these roles, MTV News has confirmed that 27-year-old “Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” heartthrob Ben Barnes is throwing his hat into the ring. The actor is already quite popular with the “Twilight” fanbase and shares the same manager as both Copon and “Twilight” star Cam Gigandet. Barnes is believed to be campaigning for the role of Aro, a mind-reading vampire whose “New Moon” encounter with Edward and Bella helps shape their destiny together.

Coincindentaly, Twilight star Cam Gigandet, Michael Copon and Ben Barnes all have the same manager. Since the Volturi have been around for thousands of years, I always imagined someone older playing them. It’s interesting that they may be going after a younger actor to star as Aro.
