Except if you look at some of Michael's interview's about it he looks like an epic tool talking about how Tyler just walks around and smiles at Bella. It looks like he really wasn't acting much when he played Felix on OTH. I vote stick with Tyler for as long as possible then Steven Straight all the way.

I bet all of you that are whining now are the same people that hated Robert Pattinson when he was originally cast too. While I did like Taylor in Twilight, I don't think he will be able to pull off the role of Jacob in New Moon. I think Steven Strait would do a great job as Jacob. The truth of the matter is that the character undergoes a major transformation and the easiest way to show that is in his phycial appearance. Taylor seems to have the Jacob personality, which is really all that's necessary to keep the storyline intact. It just seems silly that his size should matter that much when he's "hunky" in the books because of his sunny personality, which Taylor seems perfectly capable of nailing. Michael Copon is a horrendous and cheesy actor, and I don't want to sit through an entire movie with him as a main character. If they MUST recast Jacob, I don't see how Steven Strait could be worse than MC, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that Steven gets it. Although I still think it would be a shame to see Taylor go.

Regardless of how appealing it seems to have Steven Strait as Jacob, who was my choic before casting was chosen for Twilight, having anyone but Taylor Lautner won't work. He's all but perfect for the role. I think it's entirely unfair to even consider replacing him. He did an excellent job and he would continue to do so in New Moon. Having a new director is already going to be tricky enough. He shouldn't be playing with fire like this.

Yes, Taylor is indeed a young guy, but in case people have not payed attention to the book, Jacob is explained as a young, handsome guy, with an amazing smile and he is supposed to have wolf-like features. Taylor may not be the tallest, bulkiest guy for the role, but he is the guy that represents Jacob and the way many fans have visualized him in the books. Umm, and if he doesn't appeal to females 20 or older, it's possibly because he IS 17 [Jacob], so umm, yeah shouldn't it be 17 YEAR OLDS loving him??. I agree. Jacob grows and matures very quickly in New Moon and, as much as I enjoyed Lautner as the young Jacob, I just don't think he'll be able to reach the maturity he needs to pull off the "matured" version.

Wrong, twilightmom. I think switching actors is a mistake. Taylor is young, but so is Jacob. If they wanted someone else to do the sequels they should have had them from the get-go.
Besides, they can work their magic and make anyone look older/younger, shorter/taller, fatter etc. It is the essence of the character that matters.

That is SOOOO true, something I wanted to say. They post a picture of Taylor when he was like 12, and they put these older guys next to him, um...yeah, pretty fair huh?. I mean the Michael dude is alright, he's hot and all, but nothing at all like Taylor. Hey, I really agree with you =]. and also, yes it's true, Edward isn't supposed to appear much in the second movie at the same time as Jacob [much]. New Moon is about Jake and Bella, despite that later it is again about Bella and Edward's dramatic love and how they both give their lives for each other. [how sweeeet ^_^]. I am looking forward to seeing someone else play Jacob. Taylor is too, too young looking in comparison to the rest of the cast to pull off the hunky leading man role. He may appeal to those under 18, but he doesn't appeal to fans in their 20s and up.

If they switched out now, it'd screw with continuity. What real effect does Jacob's height have to do with the 'rest of the story' anyway? Just because Taylor is shorter than Rob doesn't mean he can't pull off the acting to /be/ Jacob. Things get cut in book-to-film adaptions all the time, things more important to continuity than a character's physical description (Marauders' Backstory, anyone?) And after all of that promoting Taylor put in, he deserves the role, and he's proven he can handle it.

Taylor seems to have the Jacob personality, which is really all that's necessary to keep the storyline intact. It just seems silly that his size should matter that much when he's "hunky" in the books because of his sunny personality, which Taylor seems perfectly capable of nailing. Michael Copon is a horrendous and cheesy actor, and I don't want to sit through an entire movie with him as a main character. If they MUST recast Jacob, I don't see how Steven Strait could be worse than MC, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that Steven gets it. Although I still think it would be a shame to see Taylor go.

P.S., Taylor DOES appeal to fans over the age of 20. At least 6 I can think of off the top of my head, and I hardly know many people who are fans of Twilight. Besides, it's incredibly immature to think they should fire the kid because the old ladies don't want him. You should use a recent photo of Taylor Lautner for a fair comparison. That photo of him was taken when he was still a child. He looks very different now - his frame is broader and bulkier and his face is more mature.

Seriously, the whole buff and tall thing isn't that huge of a deal, they could easily fake that if they had to.

Steven Strait please. The right height, the right looks, the right smile, the right charm, the right age--I thought he was older even! Also, they made Rodrigo Santoro (Paulo from Lost season 3 and Karl from Love Actually) look 7' tall to play the God-King Xerxes in the movie, 300, although they did say that extensive CG work was needed to make the 6' 2'' Santoro look that tall. Extensive isn't a good word when they are only upping New Moon's budget to 50 million.
That brings me to another point, what the hell is up with Summit?! Such a low budget after Twilight is continuing to bring in boatloads of cash just from the domestic release. (The budget is reportedly one of the reasons why Catherine Hardwicke isn't directing New Moon.) Think of the international revenue AND the dvd sales! It's already been said that the budget increase will be mostly for the Star's bigger paydays. I read a quote from a Summit rep (I couldn't find it to reference) saying that they were happy with the effects in Twilight and didn't feel that they needed a big budget increase for the effects in New Moon. While I liked Twilight, what little effects it had were sub-par. That won't fly for the more effects oriented New Moon.

The rushing of the sequel seems unnecessary as well. It's like Summit's a kid with their first $5 and they don't know what to do with themselves. Ugh, I just hope they don't mess this franchise up.

His size is completely unimportant to the story. You could completely ignore the super-growth-spurt details and I will promise you the plot would not be affected at all.


It is completely unfair to Taylor. He's by far the most dedicated cast member I have seen despite his small rolle in the first movie. He completely personifies Jacob's personality, which is way more important than something like HEIGHT.



Recent pictures show: he's gained like 20 lbs in muscle because he's going through physical training in prep for his role. DO NOT betray him like this.

And if we are going to be so critical about Jacob's actor, why not a shorter Alice? A younger Bella, and Edward, and essentially every teenaged character? The truth of the matter is, no one should be hunting for an exact physical mirror representation. That's bad moviemaking. What Summit should be focusing on is who has the most dedication and skill, not who is the hottest mancandy. (Besides, Imo, Taylor is some hot mancandy for the target age group).


There's a reason Hardwicke had him audition with pieces from New Moon. I trust her way more than Summit at this point, because she knew the movie needs more time to prepare.

So I befriended Michael Copon on Facebook after reading the story about how he announced that he was the new Jacob Black. It must be true because he just now posted another update that says this:

I think that they should keep Tylor: he is very young and not very tall, but now he IS JACOB! It'll be very bad in my opinion change actor now, when fans are getting familiar with his image.

I think Taylor was good for Twilight...he looks 15 and is playing his age. For the other books, he is supposed to be taller, stronger, muscular and more mature. I think his physical change along with her heartbreak is what begins to attract Bella to him and we believe it. He's gotta be hot and give Edward competition. Taylor was good for the first movie but I always thought Summit would need to re-cast an "older" Jacob.

Everyone keeps arguing that Taylor is 17 and can play an older actor, but the fact of the matter is that he is supposed to look 25 in the books!!!

He's 5'9 which is laughably short...even compared to Patterson who's like 6 ft. Jacob is supposed to TOWER over Edward...he's supposed to be 6'7!!!!

I liked Taylor in the Twilight movie just fine, but for the rest of the movies we need someone actually older...not just a Kid playing a man. Jacob might be young in the books, but his wolf DNA aged his body to that of a 25 year old much faster than a normal human...they need to show that!!!

I would LOVE to see Steven Strait as Jacob...I wanted him in Twilight, but I realize now he would have looked too old...but for New Moon...he would be PERFECT after Jacob goes throught the change. I mean they could keep Taylor for the pre-change stuff and switch to Steven after.

I thought of Steven when reading the books too! I think he's perfect for the post-change Jacob!
