A new moon is when the Moon is positioned between the Sun and Earth during the Moon’s monthly rotation around our planet. Since the Moon reflects light from the Sun to illuminate, and the Sun is directly behind the Moon during a new moon, the new moon is the darkest the Moon can become, as shown in the illustration.

Stephenie Meyer titled New Moon for just this reason. She says:

The term “new moon” refers to the phase of the moon opposite a full moon. It is when the sun is on the opposite side of the moon from us and thus the bright side of the moon is not visible from earth. This is the darkest kind of night. New Moon is the darkest period of Bella’s life.

Now that you know more about new moons, we wanted to let you know that we’ll be having a monthly New Moon Celebration for the rest of the year. Here’s a schedule of all the new moons that will occur in the long wait for the movie to be released, and subsequently, the dates of our New Moon Celebrations!

We want to keep the New Moon Celebration surprises as, well, surprises. But, you can count on a fun new post during each New Moon Celebration with content exclusive to this site and prizes too! The first New Moon Celebration will be on January 26th, this coming Monday!
