Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger New Moon Summit

Summit Studio chiefs Patrick Wachsberger and Rob Friedman are flush with cash now that Twilight is raking in the dough. The Hollywood Reporter has a great interview with the two about the direction New Moon is taking now that Summit has gone from underdog indie to top-dog Hollywood success story thanks to the Twilight franchise–

THR: Despite the success, you’re going in a bit of a different creative direction with Chris Weitz directing “New Moon,” the sequel.

Patrick Wachsberger: If you look at “Harry Potter” — or other movies sort of like “Harry Potter,” I shouldn’t compare — but they change director every movie. The second book is slightly different. (There are) new characters and more visual effects. Catherine (Hardwicke) did a fantastic job (on “Twilight”), and there is a naturalistic feel to the movie that she created and we’re going to keep. The first movie was very good, and we hope the second movie (will) be even better.

THR: What happened with Catherine?

Friedman: Basically, we had a different vision of what the movie should be, and we decided that the best course of action was to part (ways as) friends. She has done a fantastic job with “Twilight” and continues to promote it. She’s still working with us on the movie — the DVD, she’s doing her director’s cut. We just agreed that we had a different vision.

THR: Will “New Moon” stay in the same $38 million budget range?

Friedman: No. The next one will be higher than that. We believe that the film will naturally be more expensive. Sequels become more expensive, and we have more special effects.

Wachsberger: And locations. In the second movie there is a sequence in Italy.

THR: There is talk that because Edward is out of the picture for much of “New Moon,” there will be elements of the second and third books combined into the second movie.

Wachsberger: No, but Edward is present for the movie.

  • I'm Team Edward, but I hope that they stay true to the book too and keep Edward out of the picture. They could get away with Bella having flashbacks, etc. but I really don't want to see what Edward's doing while he's away interspersed with the time that he's left Bella. That would really diminish the power of Edward & Bella's reunion, and Bella's realization of how much he really loves her.

    i heard they(scriptwriters) are going to do some changes ... but they will stick with the story... because of the feedback that New Moon is not a good example because it encourage suicide... maybe they just gonna put one or two scene where Bella is very desperate and depressed because while i was reading the story, i too felt very sad when Edward left her... in New Moon i learned to hate Jacob especially in Eclipse when Bella kissed her and i really felt bad for Edward because he saw and he was there but was not angry... he was so very understanding and kind... But when i read Breaking Dawn, Jacob's point of view.... he was very funny... when he quarrels with Rosalie and i learned to love Jacob there....
    For me, Breaking Dawn is the best because it was in this book where Edward and Bella got married and had their true honeymoon.... ( although its not wholesome)... i cant wait to see the movie...

    I totally agree. Edward was in Bella's head throughout the book, they could show that and keep him in the movie and still hold true to the book. They left out so much of the romance in twilight, so for NM they should have Edward in longer at the beginning to develop that-I say make it a 3 hour movie.

I would LOVE knowing what he was up to while everything was going on with bella and jake. i know that while i was reading NM i was wanting to know how edward was dealing with things. so yeah, either way... def looking forward to NM and more.

    Does that not worry anyone else but me? That's way too nondescript. He's going to be present for the movie the way the book has him present (which is not much at all of course) or as in he's going to be around for the whole movie and change the meaning of new moon? Gotta love the money people.

    Edward should not be in NM any more than he was in the book. I have absolutely no problem watching Rob longer, but the point of it was to build up the need for Edward and build up the Jacob relationship.


    btw yeah the exec. shouldn't have compared HP and Twilight.

    i'm still not happy about the fact that Edward is going to be in New Moon more than he should be. i think they need to stay VERY true to the book, or else there are going to be some very upset fans.
    (thats the way it sounds, if its wrong, please correct me)

    p.s. don't get me wrong, i don't have any problem looking at rob pattinson for two hours, i just hope it stays true to the book

    I really hope they stay true to the book!! Not that I wouldn't love to see more of Rob in the movie.....but New Moon is such an important part of the saga! If Edward never left then the rest of the books would be written completey different! I do think it's a good idea to show him throughout Bella's hilusinations. The main thing is stay as close to the book as possible, and if they don't want an entire movie without Edward, then they shouldn't focus so much on the depression part of the story, focus on the time she spent with Jacob and hearing Edwards voice and the Volturi. I think the main Part of the movie should be the Volturi! I can't wait and I too hope they finish all of the movies, if not what's the point in making them??? And Steph, I despertly want you to continue Midnight Sun and also create some new books. They are vampires, and they do live forever......

    i am really very excited about New Moon ... and i hope they will combine Neww Moon and eclipse because Edward was only in the first 3 chapters of the book and most of the story is about Bella and Jacob being close to another and then Edward will appear in the last part again because he thought Bella is dead and he went to the Volturi to end his life... the movie will be great if Edward will be on the whole movie :)

    I forgotwhere but i rememer reading abt how Smeyer said if she were to write sequel to BD, it would be from Nessie's or Leah's perspective! Tat would be so cool :DD

    Breaking Dawn pretty much puts everything together. Although I would like to add I am still craving more. Meaning I am hoping that Stephanie will continue. After reading the Final book I still felt like I wanted to know what will happen to Renesmee & Jacob & thier relationship? Will Renesmee get Imprinted & become half Vampire & Half Werewolf? Oh yeah & what about the other half human half vampire boy that took a liking to Renesme? Will there be another book or movie to explain this. Will this be a whole new Saga?

    im glad New Moon is getting more money. esp after all that money they made off twilight. The effects are really gonna need that money..

    & it looks like they're goin to stay true to the book. Im glad. Rob Fans may be disappointed but taylor looks like he wont upset! :)
