Catherine Hardwicke on Sexism in Hollywood

Oscar Director Sexism We’ve previously questioned whether New Moon could be directed by a guy–and Forbes has a new article that questions wether there is an undercurrent of sexism still prevalent in Hollywood, where female directors are few and far between–and the coveted Best Director Oscar is still out of reach. One of the main examples cited is Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, who was dumped for Chris Weitz in New Moon:

Take director Catherine Hardwicke. Last year, she told the Los Angeles Times in the same article that she would love to direct a “superhero” movie.

“Did anyone call me with one?” she asks. “No. I got radio silence.”

Even after the financial success of Twilight, the studios “are still not throwing money at me,” she says.

“People have literally said to my face that I can’t do action,” says Hardwicke, who has worked as a stunt coordinator as well as directed the action-packed Lords of Dogtown and put her signature action stamp on Twilight. “That does make me mad. There’s a lot of stuff they would never say if I were a guy.”

“I’ve been on a set where actors have meltdowns, there’s screaming people, the director is yelling, cussing, there’s physical abuse, emotional abuse,” says Hardwicke, who worked as the production designer on the notoriously contentious set of David O. Russell’s Three Kings. “And that is all OK. But if I turn my head to the side, privately, and one tear comes out, I get nailed for it.”

The whole article is fantastic and raises some great questions–defintely worth the read.

guys you have to remember that there wasn't a HUGE budget for Twilight and she wanted to be more hands on than the whole computer animated thing. I think once you know what she was aiming for and what she got out of it, it's pretty good.

Though I am not a very big fan of Christopher's work, I do have to say that when he did the first in His Dark Materials, he had stuck pretty well to the novel, and that is the kind of closeness that we need to see more of in the Twilight movie series, I personally didn't like the movie bacause of the fact that it had wandered so far away from portions of the book that were critical to have down, such as the scene where Bella opens her window, for anyone that had read midnight sun, they should know that little details like that are always important, and though with today's world of how people stray away from the point, Catherine seemed not so well put together when she had began the movie. In an all honest notation, I believe that even though Henry Cavill was a bit too old, why shouldn't he have been casted? He doesn't half-ass the job as Robert Pattinson seems to often stray from the way that things should have been presented, and on the appearance factor, even Stephenie had stated that she WANTED Cavill to portray Edward, and though it is too late to alter the casting of the Cullen family, it's never too late to say that the casting director, and the film director hadn't put much thought into who played what parts. My main hope for New Moon is that Kristen can stick to the entire "Empty vastness in my heart" thing that Bella herself had felt, and as for other casting, I had felt that the way Nikki Reed portrayed Rosalie a bit off key, though it is the writers faults for having had her change her mind about helping Bella, and though Nikki is great at what she does, I don't think that she does a well enough job in her photos, mainly because Rosalie has a tenacious stare, but still has the entire "I am more than thou" concept to her. Though I didn't much like this first movie, I have a higher hope that Chris can work out the problems that Catherine could not, mainly because it's the fans that you have to impress at the DVD lineups, to make a better profit, and with the way Catherine did, Chris is really going to be in assistance of help, and he is also going to majorly need support.

I liked Twilight, but I didn't have too high expectations. Artistically I think it was very good.
The action scenes? I think the ballet studio scene and baseball scene were good enough, but Squirrelward? No. Yuck.

I forgot to write what I actually wanted to say:
I don't think the fact that she's a woman is the reason she doesn't get any calls.

    Boo for sexism.
But I think Chris can pull it off, maybe even better than Catherine could.

I loved Twilight. And, when I was watching it, I didn't really pay attention to the bad special effects on the running (like laceymai said, it did look a bit fake) and other action parts. I think Catherine did the best she could with the budget she was given. And yes.. maybe some studios still think men are better for the job. So I do believe that there's still some sexism. Chris is not a bad choice though. Plus she wasn't pushed to the side, they asked her first. No hard words!! I'm just saying that she really sticks to what she believe is right, and maybe some people are given her a hard time, but at least she got the chance to direct Twilight.

I loved Twilight cuz I was finally able to see the story played out, & of course the GORGEOUS Robert Pattinson, but I do agree that it could of been ALOT better!! even Rob said that he wanted to do so much stuff but she wouldn't let him, his ideas were good too. I think it was best for her not to direct New Moon. I jus really hope Chris knows what hes doing.

Honestly, I liked the movie. However, the action scenes could have been tons better! I do realize that the budget wasn't that big, but the "running" scenes could have been better too. I'm just sayin'.

Oh, the movie business is definitely a boy's club. It's amazing to me that an industry that likes to champion it's liberal ideals still refuses to put any faith in female directors. It's interesting that once Hardwicke was out and a man was in the director's chair, executives were willing to throw more money at the project. Disgusting.

I absolutly loved Twilight, although it could have been a lot better. It was different but not in a bad way. It had to be difficult for her to direct because it was such a small budget movie. But i still loved it.

i have never posted before i want to say i love twilight BUT the movie was umm not great good but not great sorry. i am afraid that new moon will unfortunately be a pivital point in the series success i know some people wont care but its my opinion there have been many movies that have failed because of poor production so with that being said i am a female and i think a change is in order a male might do a better job (fresh eyes)however we all need to keep in mind the crappy budget they had so i dont know what will happen i hope it works out because i think there are many opportunities here . i will also coment on breaking dawn they just ned to do it gone with the wind style (a 6 hour movie ) release it to dvd it would save money and give us an end to the series sorry if i offended anyone that was not my intent but my opinion have a great day

I don't think they don't call her for a movie cuz she is Woman they don't call her cuz twilight wasn't as good as it could of been. Yes Twilight was a hit but the movie sucked. The only movie i think she did good in is 13 but not Twilight. Catherine GET OVER IT!
