Hardwicke Turned Down “New Moon” Despite “More Money than Anyone in My Family Has Ever Seen”

200902121303.jpg The AP has (mistakenly?) leaked a bit of extra info that EW hasn’t revealed yet from their Catherine Hardwicke exclusive–about why she didn’t end up directing New Moon after successfully completing Twilight–

Hardwicke says in the interview posted on ew.com that she was having dinner in Paris with the film’s young stars, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, when her cell phone rang. She’d been in negotiations with Summit Entertainment, which released “Twilight,” about directing part two in Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling series.

Summit executives called to offer her “more money than I or anyone in my family has ever seen,” she said, but they added that she’d have to shoot “New Moon” under a tight deadline and modest budget.

Hardwicke turned them down.

“I was devastated,” she says now. “I really did feel a strong connection to the people around the world that liked the movie — and to Stephenie and the actors. But I just didn’t think I could make a good movie under those circumstances.”

Summit Entertainment had no comment on the report, spokesman Paul Pflug said.

I don't mind that Catherine is not directing New Moon- although she is a wonderful director. I loved "Thirteen", and "Lords of Dogtown". However, Chris Weitz is a good director, as well. The only thing that I hope doesn't happen is what has happened every other time there is a new director for a series of movies... and that is- I hope Chris does not stray too far away from the book. The same thing happened (and I hate to use this analogy, but it's the closest I can come up with) with the Harry Potter movies. Chris Columbus directed the first 2 and they were fairly close to the books, and then for every preceding movie there was a new director and every movie got farther and farthere away from the books. All I want to see is Chris bringing New Moon to life as well as Catherine brought Twilight to life.

I agree with Drew =). I really like Hardwicke and she did a great job on Twilight. She's been sweet towards all the actors and stays true to herself. I think they offered her quite some money, but she knew she couldn't do it with the amount of time she was given. I really admire that. Sticking to what you believe is right ;). I'm not sad Chris is the new director though. New Moon involves quite some technical things and Chris has experience with that already! Let's hope it'll be as great as Twilight =).

I loved Twilight and I think Catherine did a good job. But, I think it was for the best that Chris take New Moon because of the technical demands of this movie. I really think that Catherine would not have been able to pull off what I know Chris will be able to pull off for the wolves after watching Golden Compass. When watching Twilight I was kind of disapppointed with how sparkling Edward looked during the BIG reveal. I think they could have done a little better than that.

As said as I am that Hardwicke will not be at the helm of NM, I respect her decision greatly. Her morals that she has for herself, her abilities, to the twilight fans, and the cast/crew is really something. She did not let greed for a huge paycheck influence her decision in whether to make NM or not. She based her decision on the idea that under the tight circumstances summit was placing on her, she could not produce quality work. Which I still think is circling the toilet in that direction. Imagine, 12 months from anouncing the film to it being out in theatres is rediculious time constraints to put on a film crew. Not to mention what is required, cgi werewolves, and cgi sparkling of vamp skin. I still have huge reservations about this new director. the Golden compass, come on, you base his abilities to direct a blockbuster hit on making a polar bear look decent. I judge a director on so much more than making computer animals look real, ie story, editing, sound, acting direction, cimetography..........(I need not continue)

On a separate not. I want a Petition of all names sent to a rep for the Jonas Brothers, telling them to butt out of this movie.
