Stephenie Meyer “Too Much of A Wuss” For Stephen King

by Will on February 4, 2009 · Comments

in Stephenie Meyer

stephen king stephenie meyer

Following up on our story yesterday about Stephen King’s slam on Stephenie Meyer, we thought this old quote was worth sharing:

”I just know I’m too much of a wuss for Stephen King’s books,” admits Stephenie Meyer, sweet-voiced author of Eclipse, the third book in her hugely successful ”vampire love saga” for young adults. ”I’m waaay too chicken to read horror.”

Is it just me, or is this Meyer’s really sweet way of saying “that dude writes some crazy #$@#!”?

I agree with you Crispin Glover lives. I think it was a compliment to the success of his writting. He can write some really scarey, creep stuff. I still avoid sewer drains and hate clowns.

Yeah, I think that liking a book like Twilight is a really personal thing. And she's a new writer. She doesn't have experience, but she'll get better.
  • Willeke
Yup. Reading Twilight or not is a personal decision, but you can't form an opinion if you don't know it ;). Ofcourse people will always have a favorite subject or genre. Some really love romantic stories and others don't etc. Stephen King can say Stephenie doesn't write well, but he has to give more arguments for that. Besides.. How can he expect her to write perfect immediately. It's not like she's already as skilled as he is, because she's new to writing. It's something you learn over the years. I think she's just doing great =)!
  • Bluefire111
It's a higher level than straight-out yelling at people.
  • Bluefire111
I know! I respect people who don't read Twilight, but not liking it is different from telling everyone that it sucks. And Stephen King could've said that he didn't like the books, not say that "Stephenie doesn't write well". And now he's got all the Twilight fans mad at him. Smart...
  • Bluefire111
I agree with you. Her WRITING isn't awesome, but the STORY is. I still love her though! ^^
  • Bluefire111
Haha, at least she's being nicer than King, who just says that her writing is bad. GO STEPHENIE!
  • Willeke
Just to set things straight. I'm not calling you a lier, it's just that I haven't read anything about that xD. I don't live in the US, so it's impossible for me to read every article about her ;). Hope you understand. Anyways.. If you could provide the links it would be great. Uhm.. this is very difficult. See.. I think we're all trying to convince each other of what we think is correct, but no one is willing to be convinced (hope you understood that, it sounds a little weird). I love King's novels, I always will. And yes, Stephenie's writing style is not perfect. If I were to write a book, I would either concentrate so much on the grammar, that I would forget the story, or concentrate on the story so much that I would forget the grammar. I'm just saying that nobody can expect her to be 'perfect'. It was her first book (series). It's the story that makes people hooked on her books. So I still think she is great. The story is really beautiful, and that makes it less important for me to know that her writing style isn't too good. I read a lot and I enjoy reading very much. And when I read I don't pay attention to small (or big) errors. I just get into the character =). When I have to do a paper about a book, than I will be critical. But not when I'm reading for myself. It all depends on how you 'read' a book.
  • Jean
She did say all those things, and yes she was bragging. That woman as a bigger ego than she deserves. I can provide you links if you want because I have sources.

And no she isn't a great writer.
  • meemomoo
OK, again, Stephenie Meyer said that BEFORE Stephen King said anything. And for the millionth time everyone knows SM is not the greatest writer, it's her story that we all have fell in love with.
  • Willeke
    @ Rowena.
I totally agree with you. Everyone is allowed to share their opinions. We can't all think the same way, so there will always be people who love things and others who hate things. It's just the way people are. But I don't even think people are listening what others have to say. They blindly write/comment only the things they believe and they're not giving others a chance to explain. (I have problems with listening too, so I'm not saying I'm better than anyone). Anyways.. you're right. Stephenie is still 'new' to writing, so she can still develop her writing skills. Your first book (or series) doesn't have to be a masterpiece immediately. It's a growing process :D.
  • Willeke
    @ Jean.
Just because Edward didn't like Wuthering Heights it doesn't mean Meyer doesn't either. Though I haven't read about her saying those things, I'm pretty sure that, if she really said those things, she didn't mean to brag. She's really a nice person and a great writer ;).
  • Willeke
I read it after I posted the comment =.=! I skipped the world 'old quote' xD. But you're right. It is pertinent to the discussion and she rocks =D.
  • Crispin Glover lives!
Actually, I think SMeyer just gave Stephen King a compliment. If it's too scary for a grown woman to read, then he accomplished something great.
  • Jean
But if we aren't allowed to express our opinion then there's no growth. Just because she just started writng doesn't mean she should be immune to criticism.
  • Crispin Glover lives!
No, it's saying that Stephen King actually acomplished what he set out for, making great horror novels that actually scare people!
  • Crispin Glover lives!
she didn't stand up for herself! First, it's AN OLD COMMENT! Damn ,don't you people read? Second, she calls herself a wuss. How is that standing up for herself? "Aww...we musn't hurt poor little Stephie Meyers tender feelings!! we should only comment on pretty, nice things like puppies and rainbows and sparkley vampire!"
  • Crispin Glover lives!
oh, too late. I guess taking the time to read the entire message is too hard for people.
  • Crispin Glover lives!
ha! Yeah, being whiney about Midnight Sun leak and refusing to finish a story that's already been done is acting like a mature adult. And if you're talking about the quote, it says right in the paragraph that it's old. It has nothing to do with what Stephen King said.
  • Crispin Glover lives!
Rose above what? it's AN OLD QUOTE! It says it right before the comment.
  • Crispin Glover lives!
maybe you should put "it's an old comment" in BIG CAPSLOCKS so people on here don't think she's actually responding to SK.
  • Crispin Glover lives!
Actually, I think SMeyer just gave Stephen King a compliment. If it's too scary for a grown woman to read, then he accomplished something great.

Also, if we don't post our statements, how will you ever formulate a convincing argument for your ase if you never hear ours?

As a side note, I'm thirteen years old.

I don't really get why people would criticize negatively. I mean an opinion is fine. People with consideration should take to heart that "if you have nothing nice to say, then keep it to yourself". It is a story for God's sake. She did not do this to get an award. Obviously people were touched by it. Simply put, she has something that needs harnessing and refining. Didn't Stephenie state clearly that she was never a writer and this is her first foray into writing. Stephen King should have known this. If he is so amazing and has achieved so much maybe he should instead offer good advice, seeing that she is new. He appears really"jealous" of her sudden fame. To be fair though, his comments were kind of "clipped" to just show his comment about Stephenie. If they had printed everything, you would read that he understands the appeal and that he too read really crappy yet addicting stuff when he was younger. People we don't need war everywhere.

Wow. So it's okay for Meyer to say she's better than Shakespeare, that Wuthering Heights sucked, that Twilight was better than the Princess Bride, whine and bitch when she gave Midnight Sun away to evitably be leaked, but King can't. Aren't you all being hypocrites. He was no way unprofressional, but she very much was.

    exactly; good for U!!!
    u tell 'em!

why can't everyone just leave this alone? both authors write from completely different ideas and for different genres. they were both juss speaking their opinions on things, although what stephen king said WAS a little too much. but as long as everyone's being adult about it and seeing stephenie meyer not taking it to the heart says a lot about her maturity.

Hello? It's her story. I mean I would feel upset if someone leaked out my story before it was finished. Like she said, it had flaws and maybe she felt embarassed by them. She is a human being!!! And think her story is great, and thats my opinion. If you don't like it, thats yours.
  • yea she definitely showed that she was the bigger person here with these way of expressing herself.

I am glad she stood up for herself and ppl who do like the twilight series dont need ur comments......KAY????
  • First it's my website, and I can delete anything I want--in fact I did, several times in the other thread. I was giving a warning.

Second, it's not a profession, it's my hobby.

And there is no reason for "quotes" when you say "your" website. It is, quite literally, *my* fan website, run by one person, and in the same way that I wouldn't want someone to poop in my living room, I don't like people pooping on my website with verbal diarrhea like the name of poster you responded to.
  • bethcullen
This is true! Most people dont like King's books because they are quite different, i enjoy all types of literature! Fact, fiction, sci-fi, horror, romance, comedy. The list is endless!
Stephen was not exactly professional when he made those comments, nothing hurts more than someone in the same profession dissing your work, but he was stating his opinion. Even if i dont agree with him i am no where near at the level were i could crit a book just enjoy or not enjoy them!
I like stephen kings work but i have never been able to read or watch one of his interviews, i find him as a person insufferable!

First amendment- freedom of speech. People said WAYY worse about King on your other post and you never said anything. Meyer said herself she's a wuss so she's obviously fine with it. Calling someone a chicken has the same connotation as a wuss.

Besides, everything this person said was true. If Meyer had bothered to listen to criticism the last book would not have been the way it was. Instead the quality of her writing got worse. Frankly, Mrs. Meyer is a good storyteller, but not a good writer. People need to stop getting so offended by that and just accept it. If you can't handle hearing the truth on "your" website maybe you should look into another profession.

I've read Stephen King's books for years. Of course, Stephenie Meyers isn't his cup of tea. Twilight is a romance. Stephen King is brilliant but he is definatly not a romance writer. Stephenie knows her readers and they're not the same people Stephen King writes for.

Stephen was not exactly professional when he made those comments, nothing hurts more than someone in the same profession dissing your work, but he was stating his opinion. Even if i dont agree with him i am no where near at the level were i could crit a book just enjoy or not enjoy them!

I like stephen kings work but i have never been able to read or watch one of his interviews, i find him as a person insufferable!

lol - it is just her polite way of saying that dude writes some crazy @#!' lol

Class all the way...King was completely unprofessional. He should take a lesson in tact from Meyer.

I've read Stephen King's books for years. Of course, Stephenie Meyers isn't his cup of tea. Twilight is a romance. Stephen King is brilliant but he is definatly not a romance writer. Stephenie knows her readers and they're not the same people Stephen King writes for.
