200903120723.jpg Variety is reporting that Juan Antonio Bayona, protege of Guillermo del Toro, will be directing Eclipse, making the rumor quite a bit more official–

Summit Entertainment has tapped Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona to direct “Eclipse,” the third pic in the “Twilight” vampire series.

Summit, which had no comment Wednesday, is expected to make the official announcement soon. The minimajor recently gave “Eclipse” a release date of June 30, 2010.

Bayona’s a protege of Guillermo Del Toro. He directed the Spanish-language horror-thriller “The Orphanage,” which was exec produced by Del Toro, and is attached to helm the Universal thriller “Hater,” with Del Toro and Mark Johnson producing.

What do you guys think? Anyone seen his film The Orphanage?

Patrick Goldstein is quoted on LA Times as saying he spoke to Erik Feig, President of Production at Summit, who denies that anyone has been hired to direct Eclipse yet. They're still making decisions. Bayona is still one of several being considered as of March 12. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/the_big_picture...

With the tight release schedules there's no way they could have the same director do NM & Eclipse. Chris will be in post production with NM while Eclipse is being filmed.

Oh my, you've never seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy!? Get thee out there and watch them! ;) The Frighteners was earlier work with Michael J. Fox and fantastic in its own way. Creepy, too. Yes, PJ is a fantastic director. If I were to write a fantasy series (which actually I am), I would bug everyone to try and get him!
  • Twazzled
Meg~ you said it best. Peter Jackson would have been the perfect choice- he's a creative genius. The man clearly read the Lord of the Rings books and the 3 films were a reflection of that. It would have been nice if they would have stuck with one director for all the Twilight films. However, I am happy that Hardwicke is not directing these anymore- talk about cheesy. Out of all the directors being considered, I do hope that Bayona will be the chosen one.

Totally agree! Peter Jackson rocked the LoTR films!!!!! We waited in line forever on opening night to see them and then went back to see them again! He is great.

For Eclipse and Breaking Dawn (if Breaking Dawn gets done) I would like to see the same director. Both of these movies border on dark and frightening but the story of Bella and Edward and Jacob has to remain central.

And for the love of all that's holy . . . why don't we know the cast list for New Moon already.
  • Sbrowne
Not for anything...who are you to call someone a retard? it takes one to know one, i would say. Drew Barrymore for a director, c'mon!!!

I know the budget never would've been big enough to afford this director - but it should've been Peter Jackson from start to end. He's got the seriously talented weta workshop, and he's directed full on fantasy (which is arguably the best fantasy movies series) with LoTR and a mix of fantasy/realism in The Frighteners. Plus, he works with his wife, it seems, so it'd be a nice mix of male/female going into it.

Plus, he had a good handle on the love scenes in LoTR.

Don't know if he'd be affordable now even (or even ever considered).. but I can wish! I'm relatively content with the rumors going around (EXCEPT for Drew Barrymore - please).

AS LONG AS HE BRINGS ECLIPSE TO LIFE ON THE SCREEN LIKE THE BOOK HES OK BY ME HONESTLY I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF HIM BUT MOST OF YOU SAY HIS MOVIE IS GOOD SO I WILL GIVE HIM THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT JUST AS LONG AS HE FOCUS AND DELIVERS ECLIPSE LIKE WE ALL KNOW IT SHOULD BE !!!!!!!!!

I get it, this is a love story. Well, the saga is. In Eclipse the basis of the story is Bella dilema between her love for Edward and her friendship for Jacob. Lets not forget she does realize she is in love with Jacob in Eclipse--just not the same love she feels for Edward. Anyways....getting sick of everyone berating Jacobs roles in these movies....and I am totally an Edward fan....but I am talking about the book, not my personnal feelings...ANYWAYS!
I think this director will do a great job....such a better choice than Barrymore, or even the idea of bringing Hardwicke back!!!! Or, Paul Weitz who did American Pie!!! I am looking forward to a lot of scenes. First, of coarse the tent scene. Then the fight between Edward and Seth vs Victoria and Riley...but I may sound crazy but I really really really am looking forward to the Legends chapter. And I hope it is acted out--instead of just a scene with Billy Black and old Quil telling the stories, because in my head I saw the images, I want to see the images on the big screen, and I think from what I have seen of this director he will be able to pull thoses images out of the book so well. I am really looking forward to seeing this movie, and I am glad they got a director who can do dark movies full of despair. I am tired of the big hollywood names and crap and I think from the little I have seen he is more about the movie and the story than putting big names in it to allure movie goers. ------------------And by the way a "dark" movie doesn't have to be a horror movie.

I hope he does a really good job, and don't forgeteveryone....Steph is working side and side with these guys, I don't think she'll let them mess up her love story, the hunt for Bella by Victoria....newborn vampires....etc etc.

Helo from Spain!! I´ve seen The orphanage and I can say it´s a great movie. Although I´m spanish, I don´t usually like spanish movies, but sometimes, like in this case, I do. I think he could be a good director for Eclipse, because this book is the "darkest" one (in my opinion), and he proved he is a master on it with The orphanage.
  • Twazzled
Craftymama I just have to say that using the term 'retard' for Bayona is absolutely ridiculous. Barrymore has directed ONE movie and PRODUCED others, therefore Bayona has just as much and probably better experience than her. Artisitcally, The Orphanage was done beautifully. Barrymore on the other hand only knows how to do dull looking chick flicks.
  • olg06
I agree all she did were chick flicks that go on the corny side for my taste
  • rachel
Totally agree with you ladies above. yes this bloke is apparently good at horror, which is an important factor in Eclipse. However, I really hope that the true essance of the book, which is the love story between Bella and Edwards is the central focus. I'm still nervous of male directors and am biting my nails about how NM will turn out, because i really don't understand how a man can understand the workings of a teenage girls mind. Anyhoo, just hope spanish dude sticks to the storyline and he should be fine.
  • haha
Hugh well Spanish dudes have always been good at Romance don't worry LOL
  • 30yearoldtwifan
I agree with you Nicole above comment. I really hope the movies bring out the Love Bella has for Edward and the directors remember this is a love story between Bella and Edward not Bella and Jacob if that's lost the movie is lost. I am very nervous that will be forgotten in New Moon.
  • The love vibe between the main characters must be performed by the main actors, not by the director. It's Kristen and Rob's job. The only way Bella and Jacob's love could overshadow Edward and Bella's would be a bad chemistry between Rob and Kris and a good chemistry between Taylor and Kris.
On the other hand, the director always follow the producers' wishes and the script, giving the movie their personal touch and the way it's filmed.

That said, I wanted to add that what the movies need is to be able to reach other kind of people. People who don't like Twilight as a mere love story. They need to have pretty intense moments between the main characters, but also lots of good action. Eclipse is great for that.

By the way, if you think that Twilight is just a love story, then you're all sadly mistaken. Twilight has so much more than just plain and old love.
  • rattlergrl
I completly agree. Yes we all adore the love story between Bella and Edward but we need to remember that there is so much more that revolves around that love story, so much that needs to exsist to truly bring that love story to life.
  • EddysGal
Okay, I am hearing that this dude is great with horror, but how about a LOVE STORY? Because that is what this series is about. The only "horror" or "carnage" anyone is witness to is the battle scene between Edward, Seth, Victoria and Riley. We only "hear" about what happens in Seattle - you never actually go there in the book, so, I don't want to have to go to Seattle in the film and spend time watching newborns kill people. Let that be a background, like it is in the book, and just stick to the story. I mean, yes, there is something sinister in Eclipse, the threat of the newborns and the visitor in Bella's room. But I don't want to see a horror flick errupt from my favorite book! Ultimately, this is a love story and I hope they have the decency to keep it as such. If there has to be horror, let it be hinted at and remotely vague, not front and center, because that will kill the movie for me and this story.
  • Why this retard? He has directed 1 movie. We need someone with at least some experience. I didn't like the idea of Drew Barrymoore but I'd rather have her than this yahoo. At least she knows the basics. The Orphanage was not a good movie in my opinion. The transitions from scene to scene were confusing in places and there was some stuff in it that was just not needed to advance the plot or to be seen period. I hope Chris hits New Moon out of the park and they hire him to do Eclipse. I like him as a director.
  • Sbrowne

mmm..that movie was very misterious..nice shots and everything. the dark side should be present in the movie. remeber is not just romeo and juliet.. its a vampire story.
I agree with some other comments.. the unconditional love was never shown in twilight. and that was the sad part o making the book into a movie..
If he can keep the idea of a vampire romance..and make it stronger and powerful ..as we all want (fans) then go for it summit E.!!! Spanish directors have a different vibe..so..I AGREE.

I have to say that I'm becoming incredibly worried about the future movies. With NM I just feel like Chris will do a great job and so will the cast but I hope that Jacob and Bella's relationship doesn't overshadow Bella and Edwards on screen. Since Twilight didn't show their absolute and unconditial love I'm a bit worried that it won't be portriad right until... well I have no idea. Twilight was the movie that where they should have showed it. now I don't know if they will have a chance now... NM will be mainly about Jacob and Bella. The Eclipse will probably about the big battle with Victoria and the newborns. Then BD will be all about Renesme...I just hope whoever directs the next movies can really deliver!! I want to be able to feel the feel the love between edward and bella that i felt when I read the books...Thats what made the books to good...for me atleast, it wasn't the battles or the love triangle, it was their love for one another that really made the story what it was. I just hope that the directors don't forget that!

Sweet!!! I agree that the "big picture" of Eclipse is the love triangle between Bella/Edward/Jacob;however, the mystery of the Seattle killings is a theme throughout the this story and Victoria.... so, I believe that if they can portray the genuine fear Bella has about Victoria that her concern for Edward and Jacob will come out naturally. She is really torn between her love for Edward and her need to be around Jacob.... She doesn't realize that she loves Jacob till, well the end. It seems that her feelings for both loves is a mystery until the end , so I think that if this director can make us fearful of what is coming, but also annoyed with Bella for her actions, then I think it will spot on.... I hope New Moon is depressing... that's how I felt reading it...always waiting, and wanting edward to come back. I felt Twlight didn't depict enough angst as I would have liked....

He is a gifted director. The Orphanage was one of the most suspensful films I have ever seen. He will do a wonderful jon with Eclipse. He will bring just the right mix to the movie.

(Thank God it's not Drew Barrymore!)

I saw the Orphanage and thought that it was like nothing I'd even seen before. It was awesomely shot!!!! I think that Bayona will bring a much darker- mature version of the Twilight series to the screen setting the scene for Breaking Dawn. Like the Harry Potter series, New Moon and Eclipse become pretty heavy- and I think they need a director who can portray that. It will blow the Twilight out of the water!
If this is true- I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

I don't know anything about this guy. I think we need to remember that just because The Orphanage doesn't have some of the qualities of Eclipse, it doesn't mean he's not capable of making it happen. If The Orphange is as good as everyone says, that means he did a great job as a director. I hope this means that Summit has opened their eyes to what the fans want and they are reacting to it.

guys, this is awesome news! He is THE Director of horror. This would be wonderful for Eclipse. and I'm so excited for the cast who will no doubt be thrilled to work with him!

Guillermo del Toro. Not Benecio. :x

    yeah Benicio is an actor

    Just what ECLIPSE needs.
The directors from spanish countries, add lots of spice and Magic -Realism to their productions.
The suspense is unbeatable and never leads to disappointment.
All the Twilight fans should be very happy with this amazing choice!
    Salud, Juan Antonio Bayona !

I hope he does a really good job, and don't forgeteveryone....Steph is working side and side with these guys, I don't think she'll let them mess up her love story, the hunt for Bella by Victoria....newborn vampires....etc etc.

Should be interesting! Here;s the trailer for The Orphanage for those who have seen it might give you a fair idea http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jA6pPzh6Bd4

I agree with you Nicole above comment. I really hope the movies bring out the Love Bella has for Edward and the directors remember this is a love story between Bella and Edward not Bella and Jacob if that's lost the movie is lost. I am very nervous that will be forgotten in New Moon.

  • Edward/Bella love story the main topic of Eclipse? Last time I checked, the love triangle was the main topic, as well as Victoria's plot against Bella. You guys always forget to mention the importance of Jacob in the story. God, there's much more in the series than Bella and Edward!

Why this retard? He has directed 1 movie. We need someone with at least some experience. I didn't like the idea of Drew Barrymoore but I'd rather have her than this yahoo. At least she knows the basics. The Orphanage was not a good movie in my opinion. The transitions from scene to scene were confusing in places and there was some stuff in it that was just not needed to advance the plot or to be seen period. I hope Chris hits New Moon out of the park and they hire him to do Eclipse. I like him as a director.

mmm..that movie was very misterious..nice shots and everything. the dark side should be present in the movie. remeber is not just romeo and juliet.. its a vampire story.

The Orphanage is awesome, but I think that Eclipse has two important parts:
    - Bella&Edward&Jacob at the tent (that scene has to be soooo funny)
    - The final fight (so much action)
And... The Orphanage doesn't have any of them (no fun, no action), it has more mystery...

The Orphanage was terrifying to me, but also had some tender moments. Maybe it'll be a good mix for Eclipse.

I am just glad that it isnt Barrymore. I just think that she needs a few more movies until her belt before she should take on something as big as Eclipse. I mean there are a lot of us out here who really want the movies to be good. I have never heard of the guy but hopefully he is good...guess I will go get "The Orphanage" and watch it. I agree with Trac though...The love story should be the priority of the film!!

  • I don't have a clue who he is and I havent heard off any off the films he's directed. Maybe I will purchase "the orphanage" and then report back after I've watched it. I have to admit that I'm started to get a little bit pissed with summit, they haven't even released an official cast list for New Moon and now they are being so cryptic over who will direct eclipse. As far as I was aware it was going to be directed by Chris Weltz Brother Paul, I wish they would get their heads out off their asses and just make what needs to be official, thats all the fans want and should they not respect their wishes, after all it is us who is lining their pockets with our hard earned cash! Enough said! LOL

I THINK THESE PEOPLE NEED TO GET IT STRAIGHT. THEY'RE ALWAYS CONSIDIRING SOMEONE NEW. MAKE UP YOUR MINDS!!!
  • hey, please don't use all caps! It makes it look like you're yelling.
    thanks.
  • Edward/Bella love story the main topic of Eclipse? Last time I checked, the love triangle was the main topic, as well as Victoria's plot against Bella. You guys always forget to mention the importance of Jacob in the story. God, there's much more in the series than Bella and Edward!
  • Jessica
Hardly. The entire series is about Bella and Edward struggling to maintain a relationship due to the shakey nature of their love. Obviously it's shakey because of the vampire/human thing.

This is similar to people comparing Stephenie Meyer to J.K Rowling, comparing Twilight to Harry Potter. NONSENSE. TOTAL GARBAGE!!

I read Twilight before it became popular and I enjoyed it all, immensely. But I also read Harry Potter for TEN YEARS and for anyone to compare the series or the authors is absurd.

The fact remains that Twilight is about, and only about, a romance, and the entire series is driven on the characters alone. The plot itself is so weak. Twilight has no substance to it, just a very epic romance that gets very tiring very fast.
  • Arabella
So what is your point witch?????, We all know its about Edward and Bella and their difficult love strory. what has harry puker got to do with Twilight! Its like comparing a magic wand to a gorgeous vampire creature.

    i agree completely :)

I agree The Orphanage is a great movie. It looked great visually and emotionally even if it's a horor, althouhg it isn't just that, it is a great drama also.
And I personally think that European director will bring something new and fresh to the franchise, something more spiritual. I really think it is a good choice.
And it will give a little more credibility to Twilight series I mean in the eyes of snobs haha.

This would be a fantastic choice. The Orphanage was a great movie and he will bring a great creepy/horror quality to Eclipse. I'm excited

yeah, I agree too, He did a great job with The Orphanage, I think he'll do an amazing job with Eclipse.

I agree! The Orphanage was great, and had a darkness to it that would be good for Eclipse.

I've never seen the Orphanage. Now I'll have to see it, to see what he's capable of. However, in the end, I just hope Eclispe is good and worth my money to see it, regardless of who directs :)

The Orphanage is awesome, but I think that Eclipse has two important parts:
    - Bella&Edward;&Jacob; at the tent (that scene has to be soooo funny)

    - The final fight (so much action)

And... The Orphanage doesn't have any of them (no fun, no action), it has more mystery...

The Orphanage was terrifying to me, but also had some tender moments. Maybe it'll be a good mix for Eclipse.

I don't have a clue who he is and I havent heard off any off the films he's directed. LOL
