How Will “Flittering Images” of Edward Be Shown?

Flittering Images New Moon Bella Swan Edward Cullen

How will the “flittering images” of Edward Cullen be shown in the New Moon movie? Amanda Bell at the Examiner proposes three ways this might occur. Among them–

Resulting as a consequence of her thrill-seeking behavior, Bella is to resort to dangerous tasks in order to summon up an audio memory of her beloved Edward’s warning and protective voice. Perhaps, the director will use this opportunity to present these visions of Edward. Instead of a voice, they might present a vision of him. Or, maybe, alongside the voice, Bella could remember those piercing gold eyes or that crooked smile we all love.

Another way, of course, is to show Edward experiencing his hell in South American absence of Bella, a fact of whch book-readers were not aware in the first read-through of New Moon. While some say that this would deprive the movie-viewer of some of the power of New Moon, if done appropriately, perhaps some of the book could be preserved still. For instance, if we saw Edward in motion in South America, but did not know of his misery (i.e., by keeping him busy, or by not revealing long scenes of him there), perhaps the mystery and suspense, too, would be saved.

Check out the whole article over at the Examiner.

It should be just Edward's voice we have to miss as much as Bella and putting too many flashbacks and showing Robert (even though i love him) would take away from the reunion at the end. This book is about heartbreak and longing for someone if you see them all the time it will not feel the same. Stick to the book just his voice.

I want to miss Edward as much as Bella does, just like I did reading the book, when I read the book it was aweful, in the best sense of the word-Stephenie did her job well---I want to feel Bella's longing and I don't want to see him "flittering" onto the screen because I don't feel like I'll miss him too. Plus I as said before, if the movie is taking up time creating images and scenes that never happened, as in Twilight, then scenes that did happen might not fit in. I don't want to see that happen. I want to watch New Moon, not something screenwriters and directors made up to apease fans with character baises. We all have to go without seeing Edward(Bella and movie goers alike), to achieve affect. Don't get me wrong I would love nothing more than to see Edward in everything all the time, but it will ruin how the movie made me feel when he came back. I don't want to lose that joy, despite the danger that that scene in the book made me feel. Did all of the extra made up scenes in Twilight do anything for us that the book didn't? No, it took away from other aspects from the book-blood testing(sorry I keep bring that up in everything in most things I write about), it took away emotions of first love and replaced it with a sad attempt of fear(all the extra James scenes and Victoria evaping Charlie, yadda yadda. Plus we already know there will be extra scenes that weren't in the movie because the actress who protrays Victoria got a script, and from what I remember from reading this book(on my fourth time now) she is never seen(well her hair is)--only heard about. So-----what are scenes are we going to lose to leave room for these? Because it is apparent to me that they can't have both--look at Twilight. Although there is a new director, it's still the same screenwriter. There isn't anything in the book that I would sacrifice. I loved it and don't want it changed. I understand slight changes for movie purposes--but creating different scenes--please limit them.

I think the idea of Edward appearing as a "ghost" is the best idea. It doesn't give away too much on Edward's side of the story....yet. By having Edward as a transparant character 'til Volterra, I think it will actually show what Bella is thinking. It might not work just having Edward's voice, it might get confusing....er......to those who haven't read the books that is.

Could have Edward flashing up from the night James was chasing Bella? Kind of, having a ghostly image of him from that night, saying the things Bella thinks he is saying, appearing with the same expressions as that night.....
  • Lovin_the_Cullens_n_Bella
I'm not sure on how they should do this...all I know is they have to have his voice in there. Other than that, I'm not sure....lol...I'd love to see his face, but I'm not sure if it's right for the movie.
  • I think it would b better to have the most of him in Italy. Before that, and if they really have to use any flittering images ..I think it would be acceptable if they don't show his face somehow.. Like whenever Bella would hear his voice she'd see him in like this very bright place that we wouldn't really see his face clearly or maybe he would be against a strong background light i.e his face on the shadow part .. or maybe with very close closeups to parts of his face with him talking above his shoulder and his back toward us. it would be better NOT TO SEE HIS EYES in any case till he bonds with Bella in italy . I can imagen Bella seeing him the same way in her mind while running against time to save him , again walking slowely towards this very bright light it's surreal until she sees him standing there then both the images blend together and it becomes normally lit and everything..ONLY THEN I'd be more than happy to see Edward.

So basicly those flittering images better be short/shaken/very bright/unclear whatever so..and for a mere of second ..

    Sorry for the bad english.
  • CB2
I think it should just be his voice. It would be good to hear his voice talking to jacob and rosalie on the phone also.
  • foreverTWInerd
I think whatever they do they should just limit Rob until Italy. Whether we see fleeting images, just a voice, a split shot of him suffering in South America, I just have to get the same "OMG THE HOLE THE HOLE I MISS EDWARD HE WAS MY LIFE" feeling as I did in New Moon.
  • TheLionFellIn<3W/Ceci-ROBECI
Okay, see it killed me and I cried like a baby when Edward left but I really don't want him too much in the movie b/c that would kinda kill the whole reunion in Italy... it's VERY important to me that they do this correctly! However, Edward's VOICE is a must... that HAS to be in it w/ the golden eyes or crooked smile *sigh*
  • BAM6AM88 -- Kristen is love :)
soooo i was just watchin my DVD, (again) lol and well i was watching the part at the police station when bella looks at Waylens feet and hace some flickering" images of edward and the cullens and things...it kinda made me wonder if they might do this with edward in new moon also? i dunno anyone have any comment? disagree?
  • nomesters
This is definitely a challenge for the filmmakers. I think that it would be really difficult to only use Edward's voice, I just don't think that it would work too well, even though that is how it is in the book. They should have like a faded image of him, something that shows either that Bella can hear him but not see him even though we can, or we might just have to make do with the fact that for the sake of the movie she can see him, but tries not to see him too well. This is a hard one though.
I think with the beginning, with some dream sequences where he appears, with those visions of him, and with the Italy/reunion scene, this will be enough Rob.
Of course what I really want is for them to stay true to the book, which means Edward's voice only, and no visions unless Bella can see him/lets herself see him, but I think this is something we might have to sacrifice.
If you guys want to talk to me about this, I am willing to have email conversations - actually, I am dying to hear peoples suggestions and chat, so email me at nomesters@gmail.com
  • Courtney
I dont think that they should show Edward at all. We should experience it as Bella does. Compare it to being under water, and almost being out of air, then your head breaks through the surface. Thats what I want to feel when I hear his voice. When I first read New Moon, I thought that Edward was near her somehow. I want New moon virgins to feel the same way.
  • Lindsey
yesss. I wish they'd keep everything as CLOSE to the book as possible.
maybe like when they're on the motorcycles, she'll hear his voice and then they'll cut to a few images of him, but as you ^ said, as Bella experiences it - not crystal clear.
  • twilight love
they cant show edward too much or it will ruin the whole point of edward in isolation from others and i really hope that these images are good quality effects.
  • As long Edward's flittering image doesn't remind me of old school 'beaming' from Star Trek then I'm cool.

I must say that I disagree with showing Edward in South America. I believe if shown too quickly, then the anticipation, as well as the power of their reunion, will be lost. What makes a good movie great, in my opinion, is that on the edge of your seat anticipation.

The only time I wish to see Edward in South America is when he receives the call from Rosalie.
  • i hope they make the flittering images good but these r all good suggestions on how to do it
  • Adriana
Edward haunted Bella, that is my take, she heard his voice, she stayed in Forks, because she wanted proof that he existed, the whole Jake stunt was so she could hear his voice, so Edward's presence never left and when he got back he told her, that he left a part of himself with her, and who knows maybe Stephenie will do with Twilight, remenber she gave Midnight Sun to Catherine and Rob, so maybe she will hand out the Outtakes.
  • Robahottie
I guess if you thought of Flickering images of Rob not na bit of your taste, why dont you just read the book, dont watch the movie. Makes sense, coz you know what Bella is definitely schizophrenic in the movie with all her auditory hallucinations, seems like i listened to the radio... and it makes the movie all the more depressing.
  • eward&bella
I would love to see when Rosalie tells Edward that Bella died, and as much as I LOOOOOVE Robward I think that it would be better if you could only hear his voice, and then see him in italy because it'll make us all more anxious to see him. I really hope they stick to the book this time...:)
  • One of the things that I would love to see is Edward when Rosalie says to him that bella is dead... I think is important part... , I like the idea of Aree....
  • maral
    NOOOOO!

as much as i would love some more Robert on screen time i really think that having him in little segments would take away from that major affect of FINALLY seeing him at the end. I mean if you have the opportunity to see him throughout the movie you don't really feel like he is missing, but if you literally do not see ONE image of him the entire film, imagine how intense it is going to be when Bella finally finds him in Italy!

i really hope they don't find silly ways to add him in randomly.
  • team edward_duh
please! NO SEEING EDWARD IN SOUTH AMERICA !!!!! WE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW HE WAS IN SOUTH AMERICA UNTIL THEY RE-UNITE. they should take into consideration the fans, and stop trying to appeal to the non-readers.. why do we care about them anyway??!!!! LOL they should STICK TO THE BOOK AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE! its bad enough that catherine added so many uneccessary scenes to Twilight (IE. GOOGLE?! REALLY?! EDWARD CULLEN-- GO GOOGLE MY ADRENALINE RUSH!? COME ONNN) and cut off a lot of the stuff all the fans wanted to see (drive to seattle, first kiss, bella faints in bio etc..) hearing the voice and seeing a faded out image would be the best bet, i think.
  • i would have liked the 'Do you want a drive to seattle?' scene..
it was one of the light but sweet moments of their budding relationship..

but i disagree that they should stop trying to appeal to the non-readers..
this franchise was brought alive to let everyone experience the twilight saga..
    there was no for-readers-only target..
they wanted to create a film that had the same bite as the books did and let people experience it to a whole different level--
but i agree catherine and melissa didn't have to do the field trip part..ugh, it was just..out of place [like a trip to a greenhouse in a town that was perpetually full of greenery already]..ö
  • Aree
i think it would be cool if they would have edward sort of there...
you know like in some movies when a conscience of someone is speaking to the main character
so like when bella is in port angeles it be cool if you just hear the voice at first
then they switch camera view to the guys at the bar and then they go back to bella and edward is there all transparencyish behind bella talking into her ear then another change in camera view and then back to bella and he is gone...
so there is the best of both ideas:) there is alway compromise

but i do agree with the only voice idea
    id rather have that
cause thats what really had me continuing new moon
i had kept asking myself "is he coming back??, is he coming back??"
  • BAM6AM88 -- Kristen is love :)
ooohhhh i rather like this idea!! like edward talkin into bellas ear but clearly he isnt there.. i haddnt thought of this as a possibilty!
  • I like this vision!
  • Robahottie
Movies appeal to all senses except probably taste, so if you only hear Edwards voice its kind of lacking flavor, put him in flashback with the voice, probably appealing. Remember this is not a radio, he can be there in the scene without Christine touching or knowing his presence just hearing it, but it will appeal to viewers because we can hear and see as well. Just my opinion. Let Chris Weitz decide.
  • Robahottie
In all honesty, this movie is going to sell because Rob is gonna be there. I have very high expectations, and Chris Weits gonna be stupid not to know this. He can put Rob in numerous scenes without jeopardizing the story anyway. I have faith in you Chris.
  • Robahottie
Well I guess if they literally stick to the book, this is the most depressing movie Im going to watch, all because Edwards gonna be there not because the movie is good, no wonder New Moon is the least favorite in the saga. Chris Weitz know better than to follow what is good for the movie. Movies and books dont have to be exactly the same, story wise yes. But since New Moon is slow paced doesnt mean the movie had to be the same as well... if Edwards not there I surely dont wanna watch it, to be honest.
  • stephanie29
I can't comment on New Moon not beingthe favorite of the saga, I just wanted to note that New Moon is so important to the rest of the saga--there are certain things that need to be achieved. Bella and Jacobs relationship is very important, Bella's agony of not being with Edward, (and that can't be achieved if she is seeing his face all the time), and then her fear of the volturi, plus the introduction of the wolf pack. I realize as a fan of the books that there are more important things that need to happen in this movie other than seeing a bunch of senseless made up scenes that take time away from more important things. Just think of the scenes that could have been in Twilight if there wasn't all the extra James scenes, the greenhouse scene, ect. For example, blood testing.
  • tweeter76 IAMSWITZERLAND-1/09
First of all, this story is not about ROB . . . it is about Bella, Edward, and again . . . whether some people like it or not, Jacob. New Moon may be some readers least favorite book but it isn't the case for all , so please don't make assumptions. And in all honesty, this movie would sell whether Rob were in it or not. Twilight was a success because of the fans of the books. People who have read them and love the characters not necessarily the actors portraying the characters. For what it's worth . . . this book is about the wolves and how they come to be for the remainder of the saga. If Stephenie didn't want the wolves to play a major roll in the story, she would have published "Forever Dawn" (her first try at ending Bella's story) instead of going on to write the last 3 books.

I do agree that the fans should have faith in whatever Chris decides to do but in truth, EDWARD IS GONE. It is what it is and all the "OMG . . . it can't be good if Rob isn't in it" fans are just going to have to deal with it.
  • Robahottie
I didnt say that the story is about Rob alone, I'm trying to imply is that there are things that needs to be shown which is important and there are things in the books as well that is least important and it doesnt have to be shown, I didnt say Rob has to be in every scene? Well I still havent seen a movie that literally captivated evry detail in the book. And to tell you I havent read the book yet when I watched the movie. Well that is why i said its the least fave of all three books, coz stephenie needs to create a story, and have to introduce Jacob, I dont care whatever way they will do the introduction of Jacob, all I care is that, Rob needs to be seen during times when Bella hears him. If your not ok with it, I dont have to argue with you. Cause even if you make Taylor as Edward, I really wont care watching the movie at all. Well we surely am gonna deal with it, coz definitely Rob's gonna have more screentime as expected, I bet on that!
  • Adriana
I think people should just trust the filmmakers, because this is like Twilight all over again, complain, complain and complain,. why not wait to complain until the finish products? makes me wonder why not pull the plug on the whole thing. Because instead of being exicted is whine, whine and more whine.
  • beanie
I keep thinking about Denny from Grey's Anatomy.
  • Adriana
Another thing why Edward was hardly in NEW MOON much, because Stephanie has said in her website that he was a mess, but she has Outtakes from his POV on there, and she also said on the dvd Extra, that she does not mind the changes, and she even approved of the first script, so if we flittiery imagies is Because Stephenie has given her thumbs up. Remenber they took Stephenie on a tour of the first movie, so you can bet they will do the same thing and ask for her opinion, because this is her baby. And I think we should let these people work in peace and see the finish results.
  • Adriana
It's not cheesy if it's done right has anyone seen PS. I LOVE YOU?
  • tweeter76 IAMSWITZERLAND-1/09
Exactly . . . that's what I had said in an earlier discussion on this topic. He's there but not where she actually sees him. I think too that keeping his image "softened" would work . . . like not full blown color and where it was just visible to the viewer. I don't think it will take away from the hurt she is feeling either because we all know he isn't there . . . we all know he left and she's just hearing him.
  • Sara
I havent but I know that when he dies he's still "there" and that's how i want them to portray how her hallucinations are! ive seen when the woman is lying in the bed he's cuddling up to her, but he isn't really there? id love it if they did that with Edward and Bella.
  • dani
I think they should make her have FULL BLOWN hallucinations. meaning her SEEING him there right beside her. that would put more Rob in too! so yeah, when shes standing on the cliff, he could be there beside her, but not touching her or anything. Just standing there next to her, and speaking to her "Bella don't do this" etc etc. i think that would be way less cheesy and appropriate.
  • I agree with the part where he looks like he's there with her on the cliffs, but the rest of the movie should have his voice, or maybe part of it have his voice and the rest have some of him, kinda making it look like he's getting stronger in her mind... sounds sorta cheesy to me but, oh well
  • vamplover
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH DANI. I THINK THE AUDIENCE SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE EDWARD IN THIS AS AN HALLUCINATION. THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT BELLA SEES HIM. IT SURE WOULD KEEP US WATCHING MORE INTENTLY.
  • voila
LOL at the "flittering image" above :)
  • Erica_Trevino
it would be nice if they had his voice and then had them lil flashes of his eyes like they did in twilight just so when he comes out in italy its like dang finally we get the whole package.....
  • RustyHalo
I do agree with everyone so far. Just keep the voice, we need to feel as heartbroken and as anxious as Bella to see our beloved Edward at the end. Also we DON'T want another "cheesy" movie like Twilight was. (Sorry Catherine, just my opinion).
  • CRYSTAL
I THINK THEY NEED TO SHOW THE OUT TAKE FROM (NEW MOON ON THE STEPHANIE MEYER WEBSITE) WHERE EDWARD GET THE CALL FROM ROSLIE THAT BELLA DIED.
  • that would be great, showing why Edward is running to ask the Volturi to die (because Rosalie said Bella died) and why Bella and Alice have to go and save him
  • twerdiewerdie
i agree but i think we should first see this when alice finds out, so the whole romeo and juliet like series of unfortunate events stays intact...
  • RustyHalo
I have to agree with you on this one part. So we can feel Edward's agony. But after that, just his voice.
  • natalie_teamrobsten
I'm totally not sure what will work. In my opponion what they should really do is just have his voice be heard whenever Bella does somethin reckless just like in the book. If fans were able to sit and read the whole middle of the book without Edward we will be able to sit in a theatre anxiously waiting for his return as we did with the book. By adding only his voice the audience will get the true meaning of the book and get to feel alongside Bella her sufferin and reconcilliation with Edward. Common u guys that's how Stephenie wrote the novel and the novel that WE ALL fell in love with! =D don't worry we will see more of our beloved Edward soon....in ECLIPSE! =)
  • IndiesR
and also, hopefully, in Breaking Dawn (if made) I would love to see Rob biting into pillows...and more :)

  • natalie_teamrobsten
Ome! Really?!...did u read that on her page? Wow I would really like her to write about how exactly he felt about Bella's pregnancy...and Nessie's birth. Cuz I feel that we didn't see that much of Edward's reaction to Nessie almost to the end...what u think?Fan to another fan? LOL...=D
  • EdwardCullen13

  • EdwardCullen13

  • gottobekidding
I cry everytime I read that!!! I am close to that part again now. I keep it in the car and read it for 15 minutes in the carpool line at school everyday. I just cried the other day when Bella told Renesmee that she would have to leave when she told her to and put the backpack on her. This is why we love these books.
Don't show us Edward at all while he's gone!! It's meant to be that way. We can find him plastered all over the internet if we need a fix.
  • IndiesR
That's for sure...definatly find him on the internet and what would we do without utube :)
  • natalie_teamrobsten
ome!!! my world without internet and YOUTUBE.....wow i cant see it....lol
  • natalie_teamrobsten
Yup there is always the Internet!!! =)
  • IndiesR
I know. there are so much to look forward to in BD, Wedding, HONEYMOON (you know why i capped that right?), transformation, 1st night (2nd honeymoon), Jake & Edward becoming friends, Seth, all the vampires...and the list goes on.

Yeah, saying goodbye to Nessie brought tears to my eyes also, I even cried when she first read what was on the back of the locket she bought Nessie ("more than my life") as a mom, I can totally relate, and that made me cry. :)
  • natalie_teamrobsten
Yup the list goes on and on....awww me as a daughter I can relate how bad u don't want harm to come to ur family and the way bella is as a mom...reminds me soooo much of my mother...geezuz I can totally see why and how people can relate with this novel so emotionally....stephenie really did do a great job writting those feelings...geez ima cry now...sorry if that sounded cheesy....lol
  • IndiesR
    LOL.
Yes, these books really do relate to a wide circle of people and emotions. Thanks SM :)
  • IndiesR
I just have to say, Rob had that crooked smile down to a science, he nailed it!
  • gottobekidding
I think they should just stick to the book. Edward leaves and doesn't come back until Italy. If they insist on putting Edward in there, then I think that the 3rd possibility is the most reasonable. Even though Bella tries very hard not to think about him. I would be afraid that the "flittering" could be cheesy. We should not see Edward and his own suffering. It's not the way that Stephanie meant for it to be. :)
  • IndiesR
I agree. She only hears his voice, and thats what they should stick to "hearing his voice" not seeing his face. It will be cheesy, plus it will be more exciting to wait to see him towards the end.
  • natalie_teamrobsten
Totally agree....it will look cheesy but like I said they need to stick to the book for the true meaning of the book. *sigh*
  • Isabelle
    Holly *****

    That was amazing
  • lucy
I think that they should show him next to her sort of flickering like bad reception tv and see through so that the audience can tell that he's not really there, but for Bella not to look at him because she is suppose to be hearing him not seeing him
  • twerdiewerdie
i also agree with that, i think the tension would be much stronger if edward wasn't shown...i'm not so much afraid that it might be cheesy...come one guys we're talking about the greatest modern love story...it's rather because his voice is the only thing she can't totally block out and starts to enjoy that, so i think as an audience we should experience it just like that...
  • That would be awesome, but, like Twerdiewerdie said, it would make more tension if Edward wasn't shown. But if his voice was there... that would make it sorta better than having him looking like he's there or in SA
  • Elloo
No, we definitely have to have Edward's voice! I would be pretty mad if they didn't have that.
  • karenmcwhorter
this person is right i want edwards voice on there to
  • twerdiewerdie
sure we do! sorry if i didn't make that clear...i don't have too many chances talking/writing in english :)

i was just saying that his voice is totally sufficient, because she tries so hard not to remember his face...
  • diana
am i first? i love his crooked smile
