Caius has been cast! British actor Jamie Campbell-Bower has been enlisted to play Volturi leader Caius in the New Moon movie role, he has revealed exclusively to the BBC–
The 20-year-old, who has appeared in RockNRolla and Sweeney Todd, told the BBC news website that taking part in the vampire series was “very exciting”.
“You’re the first people I’ve told” he said. “Shooting has already started, and I’m going over in June.”
Campbell-Bower teased: “I do know who else will be in it – but I can’t tell you, unfortunately.
“But go online and have a look at the rumours,” he said, then added: “They’re all false. You’re putting me in a terrible situation.”
He does sort of have a creepy/beautiful vibe, no? What do you guys think?

No, they are young (or younger looking) I think..they just have strange skin, almost translucent and clouded eyes. That's why Bella can't decide if Aro for example is beautiful or not. I always had an image of them being young.

i have to disagree with most of you…i think he is perfect! i always pictured the volturi to be young. i think everyone pictures them older due to the fact that they are ancient. and as far as the clouded eyes and translucent papery skin…makeup department will take care of that

Good choice, why does nobody pay attention, the volturi leaders are meant to be young. Even carlisle is supposedly 23 in the books. They just have strange translucent skin from not chasing their prey for so many hundreds of years. All of this can be acheived with make up. I liked him a lot in Sweeney Todd.
It doesn't really say in the books that they are supposed to look old. I think that is only assumed.

when in the book does it say that they are old? can someone point that out to me? the only thing Bella describes is their skin. Just tell me if you are going to put this kid through the same hell you put Rob Pattinson at first, and oh what happened? now you all obesses over the guy. Something that I remenber in Breaking Dawn what the Romanians said about what happens to their skin when they don't step out for a long time, it becomes onion like, so to them the sun is like Aloe vera. So The Volturi being young does not suprise me.
They are ancient because they were changed three thousand years ago….but that doesn't mean they were old when that happened.

In the chapter Verdict, her description of them seems to me that they were older-looking and at one point she referred to Aro using the word grandfather, so i thought they were older looking… I guess she could also be referring to how many years they've been vampires.

In my opinion he looks way younger than “Edward”/Rob Pat, I know he is in age, but even his looks are more boyish- I always pictured the Volturi as young- as in maybe their early 20's, you know adults. Its going to be hard to picture this guy as threatening to Edward when he looks so much younger than him. So lets see so far they're casting a bunch of kids for the Volturi Dakota now this kid…. I don't know…. I guess we'll just have to wait and see….

Only Stephenie knows how old they are and remenber she is helping like in the first movie, so I guess those who thought the Volturi were older men had it wrong. First Issue: Volturi leaders are supposed to be old looking.
Answer: Their appearance look old but it doesn't mean that they have to cast older actors. There's a thing called make-up that can do the job. In addition to that, vampire's fondness for young humans was mentioned in the book so they only transform younger humans.
Second Issue: He doesn't look menacing enough.
Answer: It's called acting. It's when you pretend you are evil even if youre not. I mean, they can't just walk everywhere and snarl andd threath at everyone they met just to prove they can be menacing.

I think because the Vultori leaders Caius, Marcus and Aro are described as being at least two thousand years old in the book, you immediately jump to the conclution that they have to look older than the rest. At least that's what I do, when I read the books.
But of course I should have thought that they would be the same age as the rest of them, and young and beautiful. But after watching Twilight, where James, Laurant, Victoria, Carlisle and Esme all look like they could be 30, I sort of guessed that Caius, Marcus and Aro would look older than this guy does.
But as long as he's scary looking, with blood red eyes and that his skin is as described in the book, I am not going to complain about the fact that he's only 20 years old. =)

I think he's totally creepy and beautiful, so I think he'll do well. I had pictured the Volturi as older, but I guess people are right that the book never says. The important thing is that they are beautiful in a terrifying way and I think Jamie is that.
he has a gothic vibe that makes him have the volturi appeal, also he is english and i think thaty english accents in american films make the character better, especially since it will add to the mystery of the volturi.

I agree with everyone else; we only imagined them to be “old” in the human way. That's not quite what Meyer meant though obviously. I think this guy has the creep factor that all the ancients seemed to convey in the book and he's also got a touch of that vampire ethereal thing. He does nada for me in the looks department, but for the role? Weitz is battin' a thousand as far as I'm concerned.

Well this is pretty hilarious, because when I first saw the picture of him on this website, before reading the headline about how he has been cast to play Caius, I was totally creeped out by the picture of him. So….yeah, I think it's safe to say that him as Caius works as me.

From wat i remember the volturi are suppose to be old friends of carlise so i figured they wud have became vampires around the same aqe as carlise which im figuring shud be about 30. If im not mistaken in the book edward tells bella carlise can only stay a doc in each area for a certain amount because he neva aqes..which means in order to be a doc he wud hav to be @ least late 20's early 30's..neva did they say carlie was as younq as edward and tha rest, because aqain he was like a FATHER fiqure to edward, so that aqain shows hez def older then edward.. ii think ppl are qettin mistaken..we also noe carlise def turned into a vamp at an older aqe bcuz wen they tell us the story of how he became they explained he was an adult…anywayz ii jus wanted to clear that up bcuz wen ppl seen twilight they were confused as to y carlise nd esme looked older then tha others..too me its common sense but hey..lol.. and I really hope they make this boy look older bcuz ii was also under the impression that he became a vamp around tha same aqe as carlise… but ii cud be wronq..it was neva realli confirmed!!

Marianne….I have to agree with you. When I read New Moon, I had pictured Caius as being older when they were changed. Marcus and Aro were younger, but Caius was older. And the main reason is because of their hair. Vamps don't age in Meyer's world. Caius has long WHITE hair….described as shocking white. I just don't see alot of 20 years olds with white hair. Marcus and Aro have black hair…..so I figured they were younger when turned. Also, they have a milky film to their eyes, which made me think of cataracts. If you will remember in Breaking Dawn, Stefan and Vladimir are older than the Volturi, and have dark hair, the same translucent skin, but no milky film on the eyes.

Carlisle was turned when he was 23. Esme when she was 26. While we don't know the age Caius, Marcus, or Aro were turned, I believe they were born or changed around 1000 BC. Just tossing that out.

I really think with the right make-up, wardrobe and lighting they can make anyone look like anything. I have a lot of faith in this movie. Way more than I did with Twilight.
I'm also very eager to hear who's playing the others. I may be the only one here, but when I read about Aro I picture him kind of feminine. I see him as way more graceful than even a male vampire and his sexuality to me is kind of ambiguous. Though Edward is also graceful, he's still a MAN to me, and I just don't get that from Aro. It's just the vibe my imagination brings.

When I saw him in Sweeny Todd, he was one of my picks for Jasper, actually. I still think he looks more like a Jasper than Caius, but I love our current Jasper and I think Jamie can pull Caius off well.

I agree- I love that they are picking relatively unknowns- the most famous person on the cast right now is Dakota Fanning, and she's done such a wide range of films anyways. I also love the fact that he says that all of the rumors that we've seen about casting are false! YES! That means no stupid High School Musical kids, or Madonna or whoever else is rumored. I like that they are going with some more British actors too…keeping a mixed cast is important I think.

Um..Before I read the article below the pictures, I thought it was a girl… I didn't recognize him from Sweeny Todd….
Who says the Volturi are American? It never says where they came from, they could be English/Italian for all we know, we can't judge him until we see him in the film.
Robert also has a very British-London accent, these guys are actors it what they do. We need to give him a chance and not go down the whole outraged root that everyone took when Robert was cast as Edward, and look how that turned out.
I wrote above that I thought he looked like a girl, however, I have no doubt he will look awesome once they are finished with hair and makeup, as for age, I didn't think of the Volturi as old, just ancient vampires, and since vampires don't age, it doesn't matter, they could have cast an 18 year-old, and it would have worked, I think with makeup, contacts and hair, he'll be fantastic!!! I'm excited to see the rest of the Volturi!!
Many of you are too quick to judge. I remember that some so called “fans” were up in arms and going into utter hysteria over the fact that Robert Pattinson was going to play Edward. But once they saw how cute he was…and swooning all over him…no one hesitated to quickly jump on the Robert Pattinson bandwagon. I'm sure this will be the same way. Fans will be out there again saying…no, no, no…why didn't they get so and so to play Caius… I'm sure everyone will want to be the first in line to jump on this actor's bandwagon once clips of New Moon hit the airwaves.

I don't know what to think. I think I would prefer older looking actors as the Volturi big guns as a contrast to Alec and Jane. I have nothing against this person as an actor, but……he does nothing for me as 'Volturi'.

I thought I was supposed to be intimidated, if not frightened, of the Volturi. This kid looks like he's a 12 year old to me. I mean, can you imagine Carlisle intimidated by this guy? Or James? Or Emmett?
I don't mean to be unduly harsh with my first impression of him as Caius, but I was really hoping for a Volturi cast that had that menacing presence – the kind of innate evil, disguised as good, that scares the $#@% out of you. This guy makes me want to ask him if he has his learner's driving permit yet. He doesn't have that look or presence or maturity I expect the Volturi to embody.
Oh well. I hope he can measure. I did like the comment above about Alan Rickman – he has the presence needed for the Volturi, but he's a little on the other end of the age spectrum for these characters…

The whole point is we don't know the age that the Volturi were changed, they are supposed to be young and extremely handsome, in Twilight it says this
“Aro, Marcus and Caius” he said indicating the other three, two black-haired, one snowy white”
Now in my eyes snowy white can be a natural Hair colour, I'm a hairdresser, a lot off children are born with that hair colour and keep it.
But it just goes to show how different people have different interpretations off the books.
I have read these books a few times, which chapter in any of the saga did it state that all vampires be changed before reaching the age of 30? Granted Peter Facinelli is in his mid 30's. Why couldn't any member of the volturi be changed when they were mid aged and look middle aged??? Don't laugh but I pictured Caius looking like Malfoy's dad in the Harry Potter films. Not sure of the dudes name, but the way they described him in the book thats just what I came up with. Anyways! As I remember, none of the Volturi were described as young and beautiful, their gaurd, but not the 3. Actually Bella says that she didn't know if Aro was suppose to be beauitful or not. So this just has been bothering me during the casting rumors, including talks of Ben Barnes as Aro. I am not a little teenager and I love these books, and casting a bunch of kids to play 2000 yr old vampires is irrating. And as many women my age love these books as the teenagers—and it's kind of making me feel like a old hag at the age of 30. There is nothing written in the books that says that the Volturi couldn't be middled aged, so hopefully at least 1 might look like something I expected. Are they trying to repell almost half of the book fans? I can accept kids playing the newborns in the next movie–but not the volturi—. I wouldn't expect all the Volturi to be old but at least 1 or 2 out of the three. I really am interested in finding out who is playing Aro. Whats the newest rumor?
After reading the books, I was picturing Caius just a tad bit older. I mean, the books say that he is an ancient, but not really how old he was when he was changed. Personally, I think this guy would make a better Alec, just because of the age thing. I really hope that the Volturi are made to look the way they are described, if stage makeup can make a 20 year old look like a 3000 year old vampire, then I think that is great. I'm still not sure about this guy playing Caius, but it is the casting directors job.
I agree with you!! Malfoy's Dad for Caius!! And Alan Rickman would be great a Volturi! It doesn't say anywhere that the Volturi were THAT young when they were changed. Why would Caius have WHITE hair if he were 20 when he was changed?

Personally, I had to do a double-take — I thought he was a girl at first. He's very “pretty,” but almost in a way that I didn't picture Caius being. I, too, picture someone older — hopefully they go that route with Marcus and (particularly) Aro. I want them to feel intimidating. I imagine they will do wonders with makeup, but his face looks soooo young.

according to stephanie website breaking dawn may not be made… because of the child's reponses. a really child can not play the part of the little girl she would have to be CGI and stephanie does not think that it will be advanced enough by then. She wants it to look real so unless they can do that she doesnt really want it made. but who knows they could be working on that all right now through these 3 movies!
I had that impression too that the 3 Volturi should be older. At least as old as Carlisle. And the thing is that they should harmonize the actors if I am to to say so… I mean Peter Facinelli is not 23 and he doesn't really look as a 23 old guy. They shouldn't pick for the Volturi guys that are so young, and Jamie Campbell-Bower has this sweet baby face… He doesn't even look 20….

I dont really care for him in this part i think he would of made a better alec or demetri but as far as i am concerned i am sure stephanie had some say so and if she did we need to trust her. she was very involved with twilight i dont see her being any less involved.

I do agree with others who have said the volturi should look slightly older than carlisle and esme. Which is true, but in a way i dont see caius being a problem. He is one of the more stubborn and dissobediant of the three leaders from what I have noticed, perhaps that is due to missed adolesence? or just plain stubborness and hatred.. both are possible.. but point being, as long as Aro looks older than caius then i think we are good to go.

you can't judge what he'll look like from these red carpet/hollywood pictures. CGI and makeup can take a person and totally make them look like someone else. With makeup and wig and then his acting will make him older and scary. of course no one is going to look scary smiling on a red carpet. i think he will do fine. plus he wouldn't have been hired if his audition sucked. i have faith in chris weitz and his crew. i think they will make this way better than twilight. as fans, if we get mad at every person they cast or every little thing they do, no one will want to take on the movies anymore. the books are perfect, but unfortunately no movie will ever be a perfect representation. i say we give the kid a shot….

Okay I will not lie I am a bit disappointed that I did not get my dream Caius (Jonathan Rhys Meyer), but that is what reading is for. However, the magic I found with Twilight the movie was the cast, as a whole, was relatively unknown. I really enjoyed Jamie's performance in Sweeny Todd, and he does have a creepy/beautiful vibe to him. It isn't hard to image him in the white hair and red eyes of the fearless (until you talk werewolves) leader. I bet once he is in the Caius make up he will certainly look the part.

Hm… I really don't think that is a good casting. Although I looooove him in “Sweeney Todd”, but for me, he is way to young. I agree. I mean, I know when I watch a scary movie the really young, feminine (sometimes an actual female) villians are the scariest. I don't know why, maybe it's knowing some one so youthful could even have those kind of thoughts and do those kinds of things and yet LOOK so innocent…I think he can be terrifying.

When I think of the volturi elders I picture them looking a lot older.But then I have to remember that they would probably be around the same age as Carlise and Esme or maybe younger.But I think he would be perfect for playing Caius because of the way he looks and they will probably put make-up on him to make him look older.And in the book doesn't he have really long hair (or is that Aro)? Because if he does then they'll probably put a wig on him.

Of all the 3 ancients Caius was the one supposed to look like an old person, maybe because of the white hair thing, but anyway…Marcus I think was the strong one, a dark version of Emmet, so I imagine a big guy in his 30s or something. Ok so Caius is described to have shock of snow white hair, the same shade of his face. His skin is paper-thin. Bella even refers to him as “the white haired ancient vampire.” She even describes his fingers as skeletal and voice “papery thin just like his skin.” So I hope they have great make-up artists because this kid does not seem to fit the bill. He must have impressed someone though since they did cast him in all. I don't know..I'm really indifferent about this.

When I was reading the book I also imagined the Volturi leaders older looking like around Peter or Billy' age appearance but I don't remember SM saying that they we old looking so I guess it doesn't matter that he looks young.
Ugh…I'm disappointed…I have read the series 5 times and each time I've always pictured Caius to somewhat resemble Alan Rickman….you know, sharp features, long dark hair, creepy…and now they cast a 20 year old, who quite frankly, looks like a girl to play him? In the books, you picture them much older because their skin looks so fragile, even being described at one point as “looking like chalk dust could come off” and having milky red eyes. Ugh….this decision and the decision to cast Tyson Houseman at Quil have me seriously irritated.

The average life expectancy 3000 years ago was only 30 so, in theory, the 3 “ancient” volturi should all be under 30 years of age when they were frozen. Picking young actors to play the 3 leaders would be an intelligent move by the casting directors. The onus is then on these actors to be able to act as older then they actually look, I guess. He looks like he has the vampire beauty though. I don't know this actor and how talented he is but look forward to seeing this in November. (I posted this on the other thread so sorry if you are re-reading)

I agree with the above comments that say Jamie would be better cast as Alec. This is what I thought when I saw his picture. (I'm kind of hoping that they mis- reported Caius as his role!) I haven't been able to think of an actor that strikes me as what I imagined Caius to look like. I agree that Johnny Depp could do Aro, though! He would be great. I imagined Aro and Caius to be in their late 30's early 40's. But Marcus in his late 20's early 30' s.

I agree . . . although I was thinking someone more mature looking . . . at least someone in their mid to late 20's. He just isn't what I pictured for some reason. I think that he will do a good job though . . . and maybe once we find out who will be playing the remainder of them I will have a better picture in my head of how they will all look!

The books don't describe Cais as old in terms of human old, only vampire old (3000 years or so). The names Cais and Marcus are ancient roman (not sure about Aro) and the books are pretty clear that they are 1000s of years old. Men from these times mostly only lived to their early 20s and rarely beyond 30 .
SM's website and info in the books has led other fans to work out that Aro, Cais and Marcus are most likely between the ages of 22-30 years old. Some have gone as far as doing mathematical calculations based on SM's discussions to prove they can't be older than 32! The romanian coven states in BD, a vampire that sits still for too long begins to “petrify” which is why they have papery, chalky skin (and the Volturi have the milky quality in their eyes) It is not due to age, but long periods of inactivity, that makes them look like they do. So young actors with creepy makeup do seem appropriate.
So I would expect that Aro and Marcus when they are announced will also be actors in the mid 20's or 30's. This is the a good sign that the director is being true to the books.

I know! Everyone keeps saying “its ASSUMED that they are older, but it doesnt actually say it.” IF EVERYONE ASSUMED that they were older, than why aren't they!?!?!? I'm extremely disappointed. I aways imagined Cauis to look creepy but still beautiful with a fierce look to him. They all have to look scary!!! Bella is terrified of them. I think Dakota Fanning was a good choice for Jane but these ancient vampiers that lead the Volturi do NOT need to be pretty boys!!! Stick to the book and not young teen girls hearts! No one is supposed to crush on Cauis!!

Completely agree! IMO…James was way too hott in the first movie. The villian shouldnt be hotter than the good guys! And they are totally ruining the Volturi because they are trying to get a bunch of pretty boys in there. Grrrr.

I think he's good. They are not described as old in human years just vamp years. I mean if your picturing old because they're a few thousand years, then think of Carlise as a few hundred. All the vamps are still supposed to be youthfull looking and beautiful to human eyes.
I have no qualms about anyone in the roles as long as they can act. I loved Sweeney Todd & this kid is 'bizarre' looking. I think he'll probably be fine in the role, but I did also have the impression that Caius, Aro & Marcus were about the same age as Carlisle when changed. Movie make-up will probably solve a good deal of it, but eh, he's very obviously younger than Rob. I'm a bit worried that he'll look younger than Edward & that would be awkward. I could see him in a Volturi role, but I can't help but feel that Caius should look a bit more hardened (as a result, a tad more mature in the face).

This guy does have a creepy vampire-like look, but i personally just think he is wayy too young for the role of caius. i pictured the volutri as being older and wrinkly haha. but hey maybe makeup and a wig might make him look a bit older.

Agreed completely. Although the vampires are supposed to be attractive, they shouldn't all be so…pretty. I wasn't a huge fan of Dakota Fanning as Jane, and I'm even less of a fan of Jamie as Caius. I always pictured the Volturi to be, like, people who commanded attention. Jamie's too wimpy to call attention to himself. Honestly, I really wanted to see someone like Djimon Honsu in the role of Caius. That was always kinda who I pictured.
But I'll give the kid a chance. I really hope I'm wrong and he knocks it out of the ballpark.
