interview 200903271018 Michael Welch / Mike Newton Interview There’s a new interview with Michael Welch, who plays Mike Newton in Twilight, over at Touched by Twilight. Among other things, he talks about how Mike compares to Edward–

Mike Newton is Edward’s vision of the “regular guy” Bella would be with if he wasn’t in the picture (this is the New Moon perspective, prior to the introduction of Jacob as a major character). Do you agree with Edward’s assessment?

I do. Next to Edward, Mike Newton is a joke. But without this god-like creature around for Mike to be compared to, he isn’t such a terrible catch. It’s high school for goodness sake! Mike is a completely tolerable and decent teenage boyfriend. With no Edward, I can see Bella and Mike going out for about three months. I don’t know if it would last much longer than that because Mike is clearly WAY more into Bella than she is into him. High school girls always get bored in those situations.

Assuming you’ve read “New Moon,” What do you think Mike Newton is thinking/ feeling during the first two books: if there was a story from Mike’s perspective (a la “Midnight Sun”) would we see Mike as the golden retriever he appears to be to Bella, or is that a mask for deeper emotion? How will you convey this on screen?

I think Bella is to Mike what Edward is to Bella. When someone comes along and affects you like that, particularly at that age, it defines you in large part, and certainly helps define an era in your life. If Mike were to have a “Midnight Sun,” we would probably see a more vulnerable side to him. Other than that, honestly, I think maybe the golden retriever is just who he is. I haven’t searched too hard for hidden layers, conflicting subconscious motives, or other devices that create depth in character. I think simplicity is the best way to approach Mike.

nikki reed chris weitz 200903271012 Nikki Reed Says Chris Weitz Has Different Approach to New Moon Nikki Reed has a new interview with MTV where she talks about the oddity of pretending to hate her good friend Kristen Stewart while acting in the Twilight Saga, and also how she thinks Chris Weitz is changing New Moon compared to Twilight—

Reed’s early discussions with Weitz have focused mainly on Rosalie’s hair, as well as the evolving look of the whole Cullen family. But keeping in line with Stewart’s recent revelation that the “New Moon” cliff-dive will be CGI, she said the new director seems determined to take the look of “Twilight” to a new level.

“Chris is great, and he’s got a different approach to this film,” she revealed. “I think there’s a progression with the special effects and stuff, with Jacob being introduced as a werewolf. I think everyone is walking into this knowing there is going to be a more heightened level of effects.”

But if you’re afraid that “New Moon” might lose some of the human element, don’t worry. Reed was quick to remind us that her character’s tumultuous relationship with Bella remains unchanged.

“Obviously, Rosalie hates her in ['New Moon'],” Reed smiled. “Hopefully, we don’t laugh too much while we are making it.”

video 200903270925 Fan Video for New Moon Competition that Missed Deadline Loyal NMM.org reader CyCyn, who’s been around since the 2nd post, made a video for the “Be a part of New Moon” contest, but her entry was just a few minutes too late to be eligible. Since it won’t be used in the contest–and videos that are entered into the contest can’t be posted anywhere else, I think this is one of the few entries we’ll actually end up seeing. I think she did a really amazing job! She says–

As you may well know, last week the “Be a part of New Moon” contest came to an end. Like any other fan, I would have given the world to be a part of the series and gave it my all. I put a lot of sleepless nights into filming, timing and editing my entry. I finished just in time but the deadline came to an end a little earlier than announced and I was instantly out of the competition.

edward cullen flittering images new moon edward cullen bella swan How Will Flittering Images of Edward Be Shown?

How will the “flittering images” of Edward Cullen be shown in the New Moon movie? Amanda Bell at the Examiner proposes three ways this might occur. Among them–

Resulting as a consequence of her thrill-seeking behavior, Bella is to resort to dangerous tasks in order to summon up an audio memory of her beloved Edward’s warning and protective voice. Perhaps, the director will use this opportunity to present these visions of Edward. Instead of a voice, they might present a vision of him. Or, maybe, alongside the voice, Bella could remember those piercing gold eyes or that crooked smile we all love.

Another way, of course, is to show Edward experiencing his hell in South American absence of Bella, a fact of whch book-readers were not aware in the first read-through of New Moon. While some say that this would deprive the movie-viewer of some of the power of New Moon, if done appropriately, perhaps some of the book could be preserved still. For instance, if we saw Edward in motion in South America, but did not know of his misery (i.e., by keeping him busy, or by not revealing long scenes of him there), perhaps the mystery and suspense, too, would be saved.

casting 200903261823 Interview with Rene Haynes, Wolf Pack Casting Director There’s a great new interview with Rene Haynes, who is the casting director picked to handle casting the wolf pack. As we all know, the life of every one of the actors has changed overnight–

Haynes handled the Native American casting for the Twilight sequel. Her final wolf pack choices include Chaske Spencer, Alex Meraz, Bronson Pelletier, Kiowa Gordon and Tyson Houseman.

“They are all good kids,” says Rene. “They have good heads on their shoulders. I think they’ll navigate these waters the best they can.”

“I’ve told them, make wise choices from here on out. This is what you’ve been working for. Don’t mess it up.”

Just to give you an idea of the fan intensity, IMDB’s star meter showed Meraz’s star ranking rose 25,566 percent in popularity this week (the shirtless picture at the top sure don’t hurt).

casting 200903261826 Interview with Rene Haynes, Wolf Pack Casting Director As for picking Chaske Spencer, who is likely to play Sam, she says–

“He’s someone I feel is going to be a star,” says Haynes. “I have cast him before. He’s always done lovely work. It’s awesome to know that it’s time for this young actor to have a great breakout role like this.”

“It was a very long process,” says Haynes, pointing out there were many strong candidates for the part. “It was up and down, up and down. But he floated to the top.”
