Stephenie Meyer Gives “Twilight Bump” to other Supernatural Fiction

200903100934.jpg USA Today has a story about how the love for all things Twilight has given rise to increased sales of other supernatural fiction–

“She has done a great job of reminding teenagers how much fun it is to read,” says P.C., 48, who lives in Tulsa with Kristin, 22. “Kids definitely go into bookstores after reading Twilight and want something else like it.”

Marked and Betrayed, the first two books in the Casts’ series, were published in 2007. They began showing up on USA TODAY’s best-seller list last year when sales of the Twilight books were at a fever pitch.

“The Casts’ books do stand on their own and have had a great word of mouth since their release,” says Barnes & Noble’s Ben Ruby, “but certainly the Twilight phenomenon directs a kind of attention to them that gives them a lot of good exposure.”

Have you read any books recently besides theTwilight Saga that featured supernatural elements in order to quench your thirst for something similar to Twilight? Let us know in the comments!

‘Twilight’ brings supernatural fiction to life, boosts genre [thanks, Laci D!]

I've read ALL of the Sookie Stackhouse series. Believe me when I tell you that they are amazing. After I finished the Twilight series, I got in a slump of depression from not being able to read about Edward and Bella. I got hooked on the SSS after watching the 1st season of True Blood on HBO.
www.charlaineharris.com is where you can catch up "Sookie Stackhouse Series".
I also bought the 5th book of the House of Night series today called Hunted by P.C. and Kristen Cast. I'm on the 3rd chapter so far and enthralled. The HON website is www.houseofnightseries.com

Also, you can go to www.lovevampires.com for book reviews and ratings of vampire books by the authors.

    Hope this helps everyone! =D

For the more adult crowd The Black Dagger Brotherhood and the Darkyn series are great! Also for anyone Nightworld, The Vampire Diaries, House of NIght, The Vampire Academy series, Blue Bloods, A Great and Terrible beauty series by Libba Bray, and anything by Anne Rice are always good choices.
  • Ah, marry me?
:) You listed four of my favorite series -- all second to Twilight, do've course.

    You've got great taste.
  • Brooke

I'm reading The Night World series by L.J.Smith. It is a really good series all about vampires, witches, werewolves, and shapeshifters. & it has a lot of romance which is a plus. Of course, it's no Twilight, but it does the job.

I just finished the third book in the Blue Bloods series by Melissa De La Cruz. It's kind of a Gossip Girl scene but all the rich / cool kids are Vampyres (Blue Bloods). I started the series to have something to read between Eclipse and Breaking Dawn that wasnt too serious and I actually have grown fond of some of the characters. It's a little young for me but it was a nice distraction from reality.
The Sookie Stackhouse series is on my shelf and I'll be starting it very soon. I loved the HBO adaptation of the first book so I hope the others keep me interested.
  • Bluefire111
The weird thing is, I just started reading Marked. It's seriously really good, not as good as Twilight of course, but it's still really good.

These books aren't about vampires but Wicked Lovely and Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr are excellent books about the Faery world. I'm about to star L.J Smith's Vampire Diaries series since it's actually being turned into a tv show on the CW network. I've heard they're great.

  • Fan fiction is really good too. I don't have time to read a lot of books it took me a very long time to finish the Twilight series since I'm a Twimom. But every now and then I'll read a short story from quizilla.com just type in Vampire and you get thousands of results.

Also I don't know if you know this but tomorrow on seventeen.com they're giving away a Twilight poster autographed by Robert Pattinson all you have to do is enter the code word of the day which is vampire.

Well thanks to Twilight I am definitly reading more. I hated reading, Now I just read to lose myself in imagenary worlds. Besides Twilight I have always love The Great Gatsby, it's a classic but before Twilight it was my favorite book and also the book I couldn't put down.

I have read Vampire Diaries which was on the lines of Twilight ( for the younger crowd). It was really good. I am now reading Sookie Stackhouse series (for adults) and I love it! I read ALOT years ago (showing age) but had stopped until Twilight came out. Out of all the books I have EVER read I have never had a book make me feel like I was a part of it like the Twilight series did! It was almost wierd...haha! I couldn't read them fast enough! Stephanie just didn't get the tweens to read, she gave us all the reading bug...thank you Stephanie! :) PS...looking for more good reads!

Yeah, I have started to read the Anita Black series. They are pretty good too. Am up to book 3 so far. Not alot of romance till 3rd book though but are still good. She is an animator who raises zombies but it also has vampires, werewolves and lycanthropes. All very interesting. Hope you enjoy them. But nothing has beaten Twilight so far. Stephenie Meyer could maybe follow on with maybe Jacob's story or go on with Alice and Jasper. There are so many ways to go.
  • SlightlyObbsessedToTwilight
i read to holly black book tithe that was perfect afterreading twilight i definatly recomend it!!!!

eg - danielle steel, jk rowling, tory hayden, stephen king, stephanie meyer and of course all the classics - wuthering heights, pride and prejudice and romeo and juliet and i had a phase of getting crazy over the classics and little women is also on my stacked book shelf! hehe

Everyone should read Peeps by Scott Westerfeld. It's an awesome book I loved it. It's pretty much a modern New York vampire story but it's really scientific as well. It also had me laughing the whole way through. I'd say it's my fave book behind the Twilight saga.

I absolutely agree with you about Twilight. I used to read a ton and now that my son isn't a baby anymore I have more time. I spent three days on the sofa reading Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse and only stopped to feed or bathe my child. He thought I was insane but completely left me alone and waited for me to finish.

Chasing Harry Winston was good and super funny for a chick novel. I laughed out loud a lot.

Right now I'm reading the Emperor's Children. It's a good story but jut a bit over written. I also read Picture Perfect by Jodi Piccult. She's an easy read like Stephenie and I want to check out more of her work.

I too am always looking for a good read.

Just stay away from the "Dark Tower" series (absolutely, mind-numbingly boring), and you should be good.

I hope authors who are writing books now and trying to hop on the Twilight books success realize it is a success because of the love story more than just the vampire aspect. These books helped you connect with the characters and touched people of both sexes and all ages. It is not just a teen book series. This series leaves you wanting more. It would be great in the future to have the stories written from the Edward's perspective as well as Jacob's perspective and also stories that continue on about the lives of all the characters. We need more stories from authors that can help us feel the way Stephenie Meyer leaves us feeling.

I REALLY recommend reading the sookie stackhouse novels!

I'm finishing the 7th book in the series and they are very addicting! And it's not just vampires, it's also shape-shifters, fairies, werewolves, maenads, goblins, demons, etc.

i read the entire harry potter series again once i was done with the twilight saga. obviously its not about vampires but its almost as good.
  • Right after I finished Twilight, of course, I quenched my thirst for vampirism in the span between Breaking Dawn & The Movie with: "Vampire Academy" series, Richelle Mead; "Gemma Doyle" series (unofficial name), Libba Bray.

Both of which are supernatural dramas. Mead and Bray's books are nearly just as captivating as Mrs. SMeyer's books were - - the only difference: the Gemma Doyle books ("A Great and Terrible Beauty", "Rebel Angels", & "The Sweet Far Thing") are not in the vampire genre. They have more to deal with magic, realms, the simplicity of ones self set in the 1800s. It isn't vampires, but it is WORTH IT to read.

    I also read "Speak".

I read "Vampire Kisses", trying to get that thirst quenched for vampire novels, but it was a severe disappointment.

Other than the Twilight Saga, I'm addicted to the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter novels, by Laurell K. Hamilton. It is adult tho. And I love the Dark-Hunter Series, by Sherrylin Kenyon. Again, adult. And the Fever Series, by Karen Marie Moning, not about vamps but fairies, its really good, and adult l0l. I haven't found anything Young Adult that has caught my eye yet, besides Twilight of course.

The House of Night Series by PC and Kristen Cast is amazing and anything by Richelle Mead is awesome, Vampire Academy Series is for everyone but the Georgina Kincaid and Dark Swan series are probably for a bit more of an older crowd simply because theres quite a bit of sex, but they're all awesome. And you should definately read the Host if you haven't already! The Vampire Diaries by LJ Smith was ok, i hear they're making a tv show from it, and Nightworld Series by the same author I hear is pretty good. Also Sunshine by Robin McKinley was alright too! that's all i can think of atm!!
  • Kaylaa
    the blue bloods books!!

There are so many ways to go.

i read one other vampire book the otherworldlies. i got it signed by the author because she came to my school. she said "happy reding" instead of "happy reading" lol. it was okay but a little too childish... i like twilight series way better.
  • Newest_Cullen
i read the entire harry potter series again once i was done with the twilight saga. obviously its not about vampires but its almost as good.
  • Mickey
wow... i was remembering that was a while ago...

Yeah go the Anita Blake books! She is tough as! I like that you get to know more about her and she does about herself as you read each book. Up to book 3 now. What are you up to?
  • Kim

What are the first and second books in the Darkyn series. i found the toher five, but could you list them all just to check if i have got them right?

I started to read the Sookie Stackhouse series, but they were WAAAAY to old for me.
And then I LOVE the House of Night, but they started to get depressing, and I began to write more then I read, so it's all sorta died out.

I like reading the fan fiction Twilight, but honestly, some of the stories are pretty far-feched and vague...and hard to folow.

Anyway, I'm not into any other vampire books, really, because some just don't have the right balance and are waaaaay too depressing for me.

Anyways...haha it totally JUST became Wednesday morning for me...so I guess that means only ten days until Twilight comes out on Tv!

    Can't waaait....

    *Listens to Twilight soundtrack*

kk, i meant twilight comes out on DVD, and *follow*

    srry, tired haha

An absolute AWESOME fantasy is The Mortal Instruments trilogy. I picked this book up after reading raving reviews and it did not disappoint. In some ways, it's much more satisfying than Twilight, the characters are very deep and emotional people. It's an urban fantasy (meaning it's in the real world with supernatural characters). I bought the first two books (the third comes out later this month) and devoured them in a matter of two days. I recommend this trilogy to anyone who loved Twilight .. and the main male character is just as yummy as Edward - no joke! :)

    GREAT books to read:

    1. The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare (City of Bones, City of Ashes, and City of Glass - to be released at the end of this month). Lots of fun to read and the author throws in some sick twists that leave you wanting more.

    2. Sookie Stackhouse Series by Charlaine Harris. Definitely for the adult reader, and very yummy.
  • It's totally true. A friend of mine have been doing lots of book orders from Kinokuniya about vampire books. Romance or not. She's been really reading. And a friend of mine who likes to read boring Malay love stories, shifted to buying english love stories. Which is really good. Because she's not very good in English and this might probably determine her future. LOL kay, I'm going way beyond. Stephenie Meyer is great. Although I don't know her personally, I believe she is so. :)

I am an image consultant and created even could call me I am less expensive. The clothes do half the amount that must spend ... and I am in Italy.

after Twilight saga I found Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, and now I love them even more than Twilight :D it's not really fantasy, just that a woman travel's from 1900 century to 1700. It's romantic and ahhhh I can't stop reading these books <3 they're for adults and there's more 'action' than in Stephenie's books :D
I also read Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife and it's one of my favourite books now. <3

Hope that they're gonna make The Host into a movie. Hopefully they don't ruin it like Twilight, Twilight was horrible ! :s I hate the movie and I hate almos every actor in it -.- Ashley and Kellan are great, Rob and Kristen are not. And the movie were awful in every way :s hope New Moon's gonna be better...

  • You all should pick up the frist book of the Sweep series called Book of Shadows. It's an awsome series. Once you read the frist you'll be dieing for the rest. It has 14 books and then a novel. Cate Tiermen finishes the story line so well. I couldn't stop buying them once I found them. Those books were the frist books I ever fell inlove with. I've read them a thousand times and could resite them if you asked!
  • jess

I loved The Morganville Vampire series by Rachel Caine. In fact, the series is being passed around at my work. The sixth book isn't out until June 2nd. It is an easy and inexpensive read. I would recommend it to anyone from teen to adult (which is mine and my co-workers generation).

I REALLY recommend reading the sookie stackhouse novels!

I'm finishing the 7th book in the series and they are very addicting! And it's not just vampires, it's also shape-shifters, fairies, werewolves, maenads, goblins, demons, etc.

But let's not forget so are other authors!

Stephanie Meyer is awesome! and i reallyy hope

that people and teens will start to look

for more vamp books. The house of night series

is a great way to go. I really can not pick favoriates.

But i am quite sure, that it is only time until

House of night series will be as famouse
