Stephenie Meyer Says She’s Not Like Bella Swan

in Stephenie Meyer

Stepehnie Meyer New Moon New Moon author Stephenie Meyer says she isn’t really much like Bella Swan, the heroine in her novels–most notably, Bella Swan is more mature than Meyer was at the same age–

Stephenie said: “Bella and I think completely differently and when I went to write this it wasn’t something I thought about.

“I was just doing it for fun but I think it’s really natural that I created a character that let me live a life I didn’t know because why would I write something I’ve already experienced.

“I brought a few things I’d experienced and added them in later but really Bella’s like 100% more mature than I was at that age.

“I was really sheltered and she had to be the grownup all of the time, and I kind of admired that when I see that it people around me, that’s gotta be hard.

This is not what we meant, Smeyer! The description of Bella is basically Meyer, expect for the weight, what a wanna-be. Anyways, she's writing herself living her dream life. She admitted that Twilight was born when she had a dream about her and a vampire. It's on the chapter "confessions." That chapter is even the most romantic one in the book. Meyer, stop inserting yourself and making unloved Mary-Sues.

daytonademon you are wrong stephanies writing is awsome if you didn't like them why did you read them

LOL Her writing is ATROCIOUS. Her grammar sucks, she uses abuses the use of big words when a simply word could suffice, she uses big words INCORRECTLY, and she over describes to the point where the plot falls flat on its face. And let's not forget Breaking Dawn--or should I say Breaking Fail since she broke her own rule (Vampires could NOT have kids) and she gave us the worse ending after so much build up. And Jacob turns into a pedophile.

And why did we read them? Because we DIDN'T know they were gonna stink until AFTER reading, you idiot. You can't really get an opinion on the book until you read it.

I read 3 chapters and knew it was automatic trash.

The reason Bella is 'more mature' than Stephanie was at that age is because Stephanie isn't 17 anymore, she is a 30 something woman... exactly the same as Bella...I read all of the books, thought the last two were a real challenge because I didn't enjoy them really at all...

I would rather have been reading Dracula, or Steppenwolf...
  • Are we kidding, Bella swan is like the biggest mary sue alive. Like said above me bella swan is just a bad character. She is anti feminist. She is portrayed and told as a strong willed person, but she looks into edward eyes and goes, "OMG your pretty i'm sorry i had a thought of my own". She does everything and lets everyone walk over her. Also she has no other friends besides edward and alice. Other than that she snobs everyone else, only saying a hello here and there. She is annoying, and is a wus, relying on everyone else to save her. Also i'l delve more into the mary sue. For those who don't know mary sue is a perfect charater. For bella, her clumsiness and not being able to lie are her major flaws myer used to cover up that she's perfect. Perfect hair, perfect eyes, perfec scent, is smart, is witty. Also she is just annoying and whiny. She knows edward for like a week and she is already begging for him to turn him into a vampire. Many people say, oh isn't she just the perfect role model, NO SHE IS NOT
  • And that is your opinion. You are certainly entitled to it. Just like I am entitled to agree or disagree with you.
  • Virr
i hate the "old soul" comment because bella behaves like a child many, many times for a supposedly mature and responsible girl.

she's 18. she's oficially and legally an ADULT.

i read some of the parts of new moon to my sister and she said "who the hell is so immature to throw all her college money to HAVE HALLUCINATIONS about your ex??"

so yeah i dont buy it when e/b-ers say that to support their argument. just because bella tells us she is mature doesnt mean she is. she also tells us she's ugly and apparently she's gorgeous according to midnight sun...

if she was 14/15 it would be more ok for me. but jeez, she's 18.
  • CrazyEye
Who the heck is the freak that keeps posting negative stuff about Stephenie Meyer? It's obvious that it's pretty much the same person over and over. I think it might be time to get some new crazy pills, friend. The old ones done gone and worn off.
  • Fearne
I...don't see how Bella Swan is at all mature.
I mean, she can cook, wow, so can I and I'm not even 15.
She let's eddie make all the decisions for her, she let's the men rule her life. and only likes Jake, angela, and her parents. That's basically it, she doesn't like anyone else.
Fans hate Rosalie because she hates Bella, and you only hate her for that reason because you can put yourself in the role of Bella. Rosalie is actually very smart, and has a good reason for not liking Bella. and even then, after Rosalie tells Bella very clearly why she hates her, Bella still continues to whine about it.
Edward and Bella's relationship is face-value stuff.
  • I'd say she's not like Bella because Bella is who she WISHED she was. They look alike, minus maybe 50 pounds. "mature??"*****, plox.
  • MH
I have to agree with the above posters--I don't remember a single instance in the entire series where Bella exhibits maturity even remotely beyond a seventeen/eighteen year-old level. If anything she has YET to reach a maturity level appropriate for her age. Certainly were told several times through various sources that Bella IS mature, but it is never shown to us in her actions once. Every action she takes is geared toward her own instant self-gratification. That sounds very teenagery and not the least bit adult to me.

If you take into account how much she baselessly -whines- throughout the series and overdramatizes things to the point of depression (oh my god it's raining, my day is RUINED. Oh no, boys are asking me out, why is life so hard?), it's difficult to even take her seriously. Not to mention the fact that she isn't even mature enough to get past a person's LOOKS. I don't care how inhumanly attractive Edward is supposed to be; if she still can't get past his physical appearance, she's just an average shallow teen. Nothing more.

Bella Swan? Mature? Not by half.
  • Anon
There's also the matter of Bella being "selfless". I guess maybe the meaning of the word has changed in the past few years, because I always thought being selfless involved more care and concern towards others. When did Bella exhibit any of this towards others? I don't care that her human friends were human and not special sparkly fairies or pedowolves, her treatment and clear disdain towards them was unwarranted. No, I don't care what MS says to make them seem like they deserved it, because even if they SAY Mike was lusting after Bella or that Jessica just wanted to use her for popularity (nevermind that being the new girl, her popularity had yet to be actually formed), Mike never assaulted her like Jacob did, or stalked her like Edward did. And Jessica? Yeah, what a shallow Barbie *****, taking Bella to the movies to try and cheer her up and trying to prevent her from confronting the guys who may or may not have tried to jump her before and could very well do something similar again. How dare she interfere with Bella's schizophrenia? What right does she have to be angry with Bella for trying to put them both in danger?

Geez, it's no wonder all of Bella's human friends ditched her in New Moon. I certainly wouldn't want to be hanging out with someone who'll treat me like that for not being a friggin fairy.
  • Koko
    Bella isn't mature.
A mature person wouldn't wander down dark alleys in strange cities or go and talk to people she was fairly certain tried to rape her once (endangering her friend at the same time).
A mature person wouldn't suffer months of depression because her bf left and then do dangerous things just as a f*** you because she told him she'd be careful.
A mature person wouldn't call her parents by their first names even though she knows they don't like it. A mature person wouldn't whine about all the supposedly selfless things she's doing.

Bella shows her immaturity over and over. As with most things in the books, Bella only has superficial maturity. On the outside she can seem sensible, hard working and responsble but scrape the surface and her actions and thoughts are continually selfish and childish.
  • briany
    amen!
  • thats a load of bull everyone knows she based bella on herself
  • I luv Twilight and Edward
Well i like Bella althoughh i'm sort of jealous coz she's got Edward and i want him. lol
  • Michell
I agree with others here: S. Meyer IS Bella Swan.

Look at her picture at IMDB with Kristen Stewart at the Twilight set. They look EXACTLY alike. Even the red streak on Bella's hair (which was described in Midnight Sun) when the sun touches Bella's hair, Meyer also has that.

New writers often commit that mistake. The main protagonist is usually them, and the story is about them or their wishes. I bet people who know Meyer personally wouldn't miss this fact. They would definitely see the "resemblance."

Stephenie Meyer is TOTALLY Bella. Proof?:
"In my head, Bella is very fair-skinned, with long, straight, dark brown hair and chocolate brown eyes. Her face is heart-shaped—a wide forehead with a widow's peak, large, wide-spaced eyes, prominent cheekbones, and then a thin nose and a narrow jaw with a pointed chin. Her lips are a little out of proportion, a bit too full for her jaw line. Her eyebrows are darker than her hair and more straight than they are arched. She's five foot four inches tall, slender but not at all muscular, and weighs about 115 pounds. She has stubby fingernails because she has a nervous habit of biting them. And there's your very detailed description."

and look at a picture of Stephenie Meyer. The one at the top of this page, for instance :)
  • Some Guy
Everyone knows Smeyer is Bella just read a description of Bella and then look at a pic of Meyer herself. They are the same
  • MadameGuillotine
I understand Bella's maturity. I had to grow up and take care of myself after my father died. However, I'm not a huge fan of her. I originally liked her, but then....she got whiny (in my opinion.) I like Bella, in theory. However...she does annoy me a bit. I think that it would be better if she didn't think Edward was just blindly perfect. I mean, sure...he's cool to an extent, but if she were really in love, she would realize that he has his faults. She would still love him, but recognize the faults. So....I believe that she shows some immaturity in that respect.
However, I have to admit that I would like to read Edward's point of view. (Curiosity) Thank you Stephenie Meyer for writing these books. Though I am not a die hard fan, they certainly provided a welcome escape for me.
  • TheLionFellIn<3W/Ceci-ROBECI
Aww really? Some of you hate Bella? Well, I can kinda relate to Bella b/c I have always been pretty damn matured for my age since I was a teenager (now 21)... they are a lot of positive things about Bella as there are some not-so-good ones but I don't believe those were her fault, there were part of her nature... some ppl are just... well... mature earlier than others.... hehe... me 4 example =]
  • briany
that would be fine if bella actually HAD a personality.

as for maturity - it's suddenly mature then to spend four months of your life in a virtual coma because your abusive boyfriend dumped you? jesus, what would she do if something bad actually happened to her?

if i were like bella i'd throw myself off a bridge.
  • Leanneduh
    i like stephenie meyer...i dislike bella swan...:D
  • KINALuvzWolves
LOL I'm glad I'm not the only one. By the end of Breaking Dawn I pretty much wanted to punch Bella Swan in the face.
  • clay
by the end of the first chaper in twilight i wanted to punch bella in the face.
  • lovevampolves
i'm glad sm is not like bella swan
  • Rachel
    But... she is
  • Adriana
my sister has always had that Bella maturity like even when she was a teen ager, she never got in trouble once. So I can related to Bella in some way, she took care of her mom than she took care of her dad, no wonder she missed hanging with Jake, at least she could be a teen ager with him.
  • i love rob
Thank you Stephenie for such an awesome story!!!! I'm so glad you had that dream and you wrote about it!!!! And thanks to your sister for insisting you get it published!!!!

I love the whole Twilight saga!!! I hope you decide to finish Midnight Sun!
  • Like OMG that has nothing to do with this story!!!!!!!

Anyway, she is. Her appearance mirrors her, but, as we all know, Bella has no personality, so at least there not exactly alike...
  • Sorry slow interwebs
  • Sorry slow interwebs
  • Lovin_the_Cullens_n_Bella
    I agree.....
  • katie
haha i love edward!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he is so so so so HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • IndiesR
Exactly what I was going to say. :)

And I would really love for her to give us Edwards POV...please Stephanie. :)
  • twilightcritc
lol having a baby at a very young age doesn't sound mature enough..
  • clay
    that's what i thought.

but apparently it's okay to allow your abusive boyfriend to bully you into getting married straight out of school and promptly squirting out a child, meanwhile giving up all plans of college or ambition just so you can stay at home and look at your sparkly (sparkles - seriously!?) voilent and domineering other half.
  • Riss<3Twilight
He wanted to marry her before she decided to live for eternity with him. He completely bullied her. *rolls eyes*
  • Was that comment directed at me?

If it was I have a couple off things to say.

I didn't say having a baby at 18 was mature, I mean't it matured me more. I was in love, treated like a princess and it was the right thing to do at the time. I had a good high paid job, and so did my partner. I am now 28 and can look back and say that I have no regrets. We had another baby 7 yrs later and with that too, I have no regrets.
  • Rachel
Regardless of whether or not the comment was directed at you (which it was not) this person believes it is irresponsible to have a child at a young age. I share this opinion and think you should shut your mouth because the world does not revolve around you.
  • holy smokes woman that is no way to talk to someone!

If I had met the guy of my dreams when I was 18 what the hell is wrong if I had had a baby with him?

The age at which you have a baby doesn't make you mature but the way you reply and react to others does show how immature you are.

What a rude person you are...regardless of YOUR age you obviously have NO MANNERS!
  • Oh ok, wise one, I shall bow at your feet and agree to shut my mouth, don't be an ass, come on her as a guest and start bashing people. Believe it or not everyone on here is friends and bitter minded idiots and their hateful attitudes are not welcome! Also I don't think the world revolves around me, where you got that stupid idea from, I have no clue. So goodbye now, don't let the cyber door hit you on the ass on the way out!
  • you tell her Dee! How rude...its people like this that a ruining the world!
  • I swear to god, this post is from March, I logged into my email to this reply WTF?

They can't even register and be up front about it, ugh, I wash my hands TSH...Anyways I'm off to see Harry Potter, only because the New Moon trailer is supposed to be showing, I refuse to let this fool annoy me LOL
  • people like this aren't worth it.

I want to see HP....I will have to wait ages!
  • KINALuvzWolves
I *think* the person was referring to Bella having Nessie. Regardless, that's a pretty insensitive comment.
  • C
It is so hard to be that mature all the time, to have to be the adult when you're still a child. Sometimes, you just want to be reckless...
  • ALEXIS
I think she mentioned this at some interview too.
  • ya she did cause people thought bella was suppose to be like her in the books u know but she deff did metion that bella was not like her in interviews
  • I'm glad Stephenie gave her the maturity, I have always been more mature for my years and having my first baby at 18 only heightened that for me.
