Beautiful Sights of Montepulciano, Italy: Volterra Redefined

As far as we know, the New Moon movie will be shooting in Montepulciano, Italy instead of the Italian town mentioned in the book, Volterra. With that in mind, let’s take a tour of the sights of Montepulciano and see if it’s up to the task of filling in for the sights of Volterra that we’ve shown you previously!

If volterra is the actual place in the book then why are they filming it somewhere else? Obviously volterra is the place stephenie had visioned it all happening when she wrote the book, so why not use the place where the author had originally envisioned it?

twilight wasn't filmed in Forks. and New Moon isn't being filmed in Forks, either. It's being filmed in Vancouver and Montepulciano. Get over it! You should be glad they are making New Moon into a film. If it looks the part, why does it matter?

I'm from Rome and I know very well both Montepulciano and Volterra.
I think they chose Montepulciano beacuse it's a little bigger than Volterra, and it's quite more similar to an old italian town.
I had prefer Volterra, too, but I think it should not adeguate for the filming.

Well they will obviously make the set look and feel as much like the actual place she envisioned, sometimes just because the place exists, doesn't mean your allowed to film there or the fact that the actual place in question isnt practical, as doing a movie has a lot of baggage ie. crew, cast, equipment etc.

(I mean u can say the same about loads of film, i guess the funniest comparison would be titanic lol, they didnt film that in the ocean, and they didnt even use real icebergs lol...tut tut)

There is no place like the one mentioned in the book in volterra.
Just a market place without a clocktower or a fontain...

The main town square or "piazza" looks very very similar to Volterra. I went to Volterra 4 years ago. Montepulciano probably had more areas to work with around the town. Either way this looks like a great site. In the book it was stated that there was a big fountain in the middle of the plaza where the clock tower was facing and there is no fountain in the plaza in Volterra.....creative license....just shows that things change and still be fine.

They didn't even film the first movie, twilight, in Forks Washington... They actually filmed it in Oregon somewhere, Forks was said to be too expensive or something like that, at least they are filming it in Italy not in a studio with a green screen or anything like that.....

Someone complained about the setting in Italy. You have to remember that they dont always get the permits that they needed or maybe the angles where not all correct for them to shoot in Volterra. Maybe a Volterra is being used for another project or its under construction. You never know so where ever they are filming just be happy they are getting it done for us.

Italy is lovely! I had a wild summer romance there once........ Are they still gonna call it Volterra in the movie? And, I hope it is not close to where the big earthquake happened this week...... All those poor people killed and beautiful old buildings knocked down.... You have my prayers Italy.

No. Montepulciano is in Tuscany. The Earthquake happened in Abruzzo, centralized in the city of L'aquila (although it was felt as far as Rome).

My fiance is in Pescara (a city near L'aquila) and there was not any serious damage there, so I doubt there was ANY damage at all in Montepulciano.

PS. Does anyone know WHEN the movie is being filmed there?

I love the pictures - they are beautiful, but Volterra is really what I imagined, and I feel like if there is any way the filmmakers can film thee scenes from New Moon there, that would be better. Montepulciano would work, it would be great, it would be beautiful and not many people would be able to tell that it wasn't Volterra, but Volterra is what is described and I feel like it fits a bit better.

Wow what a beautiful place!!!! And it's perfect for the book. Just like I imagined it. Especially the dark streets and that stairways. Except for the 'Domplatz Montepulciano' square, I'd imagined something much larger. Aaah these scenes in Italy will be my favorite part of the movie, it's gonna be great!

I gotta admit, Montepulciano is beautiful, just like Volterra but I still think it's missing those little things. There is no water fountain that Bella has to run through to get to Edward, no 'real' clock tower like described in the book. It still has that ancient gothic feel, especially from those real misty, dark shots. I think it will look great either way, I know we won't be disappointed.

That's how I pitured Volterra to look like when I was reading New Moon. The real Volterra is close but I pitured it to look exactly like Montepulciano does. But both of the cities are beautiful. It doesn't matter to me which one they use; I think it should be filmed in the real Volterra Italy. But I pictured to to look more like Montepulciano. So Which ever one they use, will be great.

I'm confused...in the new article introducing the rest of the Cast of New Moon. It said that they were filming in Vancouver, Canada and Tuscany, Italy. Is it Montepulciano or Tuscany? Does anyone know? And this article was just posted today. Anyone with an accurate update?

OK, i understand it can be difficult to figure out what italy is like for someone who's never been here. Italy is a State with one capital (Rome) and is divided in 20 parts (called "regioni"). Tuscany is ONE of these regions. It has one main city (Firenze / Florence) and MANY other cities and towns. Volterra and Montepulciano are two of these other towns, they are small, settled on hills and almost of the same period. Neither Volterra nor Montepulciano has a square fountain in the main plaza, but they both look quite like the town described in the book... even if Volterra is the true one...

My daughter is going to Europe in June. She will miss them shooting. What a beautiful place. I have a good friend who lives in Rome who invited me to her wedding in Tuscany. I pictured the same scenery for the backdrop for Volterra. Would the stairway of the Vicoli di Montepulciano, be a prefect place for the entry way into the Volturi's lair? Of course they would have to spook it up more.

i really dont think there is going to be any sort of confirmation of where they are shooting, for obvious reasons they would want to keep it as quiet as possible, but how are they going to shoot that HUGE crowd scene within the city (and the bright yellow porche screaming up the road) without people knowing about it? Its not like Montepulciano is just going to be PACKED with people wearing red on any given day! lol.

I've seen volterra, and I think that it would have been better if they were able to film it there. If you want a better picture of how volterra looks like, google it. But since they couldn't, the sub. looks just as good.

wow, i did not imagine it like this at all.....this place isnt surrounded by walls doesnt have a tower or a fountain. im glad that theyre filming it but they could at least make it look and sound like the book. like on bellas birthday! i dnt ever remember her asking for anything at all but on the trailer it says she asks for a kiss! At first I didn't know why everyone was so excited about "Twilight" I didn't know what was so exciting about it. I went to the movies with my friends to check out what the excitement was all about. After I watched the movie I fell in love with it I started reading the books and they were grreeaatt!!! Im not the type of person who gets excited over a movie or a book, but I guess there is a first time for everything. And now I am so anxious to see who makes up the Voluri coven, and I can't waith to see all the scenes done in Italy I love Italy and I think the movie is going to be great.

i actually agree with alot of people, the news and stuff said that they werent going to make any more videos,but we should be lucky,they r filming it.....but it would be alittle more relatable for stepahnie to shoot the movie where it is writen. in the book at bellas party...brilliant exactly what i thought, and when edward leaves her......but the pics....i suspected dark alleys, a big space where edward walks out to expose himself....not walled in areas.but oh well i d realy care as long as every one does there best which they all do....and at least makes it relatiable...i will watch it over 103 times the exact same way i did for twilight..... luv u guys keep up the gggod work!!

Hi all.
I (was born and) live in Montepulciano and I love it, but even Volterra is magic.
Simply they are two (slightly) different things.
I travelled so many times near Volterra with my byke and every time I stopped there, even for 1 minute at least, to breath that air on the alleys.
During the film shoots (just on front of my house sometimes) there was sooooo much confusion, all the extras with red cloaks everywhere and the yellow porsche running just under my windows ...
I just want say that, strangely enough, in the past there REALLY was a fountain on main square of Montepulciano. It was octagonal and on the same place where the production placed the fake one. It was dismounted on 1930 or so and the remaining pieces are on public park now. Someone published old photo and draws some weeks ago.
My suggest for you all is come and see both Montepulciano and Volterra !

it really doesn't matter where they filmed the scenes, as long as they were able to film in Itlay. if people never told us that it wasn't filmed in Volterra, then we would never be the wiser and would enjoy the film as it is. so relax a bit and just enjoy the fact that the film is done and will be out in a few months for our enjoyment.
