Amanda Bell at the Examiner has a great multi-part interview with Jackson Rathbone. She talks about his early days, his band, Twilight and New Moon among other things. I thought this segment was really interesting–

With his wit in mind, I decided to ask Jackson about a concern that some fans, myself included, had about the potential for inconsistencies between his character in Twilight and New Moon. I asked, “In Twilight, Jasper was dancing around the fire while Bella bled out from her James-inflicted wounds, and in New Moon, a little papercut is supposed to send Jasper over the edge. Some fans worry that this inconsistency will de-legitimize some of the scenes in New Moon. How are you and the crew planning to handle this?” Jackson says,
It’s all in the old saying, ‘Location, location, location . . .’ Once you realize the immense animalistic impulses a vampire has, you realize . . . every little thing is more intense. The smell from a vampire-burning bonfire, the adrenaline from the kill, and the exhaustion from the chase . . . basically, in terms of scent, the difference is between a dance studio filled with smells [of] burning and violence, as opposed to the Cullen Family living room, which is filled with the smell of birthday cake. There is no inconsistency, don’t worry.

Huh, I never really thought that there was an inconsistency.....

I really like Jackson and he is perfect for jasper, my fav character.

Yeah, I agree, the inconsistency never came to mind. I mean, wasn't Jackson in the scene at the ballet studio in the book, too? Stephenie wrote it this way. But it is cool to hear him explain it, it sounds like he really understands the scenes, really well. It makes sense for some people to be confused as to why Jasper wouldn't want Bella's blood when she is lying on the floor after James bit her, and then wanting it when he tries to attack her immediately once she gets a papercut. At least, people who watch the movie not familiar with the book will be especially confused.
I love Jackson! He seems so down to earth and nice.

I totally agree with Mr. Jackson Rathbone. I think in Twilight, the focus of human blood was absent from Jasper's mind due to the fact of "The Kill". He was a solider and then a trained Vampire solider. So his senses during battle are completely one sided. The senses are focused on the blood that was meant to be spilled; the blood of the enemy.
During the paper cut scene in New Moon, the environment is more relaxed and the "senses" are not fully aware. So when Bella cuts her finger, Jasper looses control due to his senses. He needs blood, not knowing that there would be blood, and flips out. But as we all know, he feels completely guilty for doing so. So there is not a lack of compassion in Jasper. Therefore, no inconsistencies.

Some Twilight fans need to not look so hard for "inconsistancys" like this... just enjoy the movie for what it's worth. It will never meet the standards set by the book, but that's the nature of the beast.

LOL I love Jackson and Jasper. I can't wait to see him take a snap at Bella its gotta be really intense!!! I don't ppl will see the inconsistency from the ballet studio scene to the birthday scene and if they do question it then its not fair becasue its one of the changes made by the directing staff. It wasn't written like that in the book.

Oh how I *heart* Jackson and Jasper. Jackson is just beautiful end of story lol. Look at his eyes, and his dark hair. swooooon!

Sad part, my friend and I had this discussion, with three random fans, in the theater on the afternoon we saw Twilight. Just like at dinner (we all went, 3 random fans and all), we discussed if vampires are playing with metal baseball bats in a thunderstorm, can they still be struck by lightning?

Plus side, we all became great friends because of the discussion.

I think I laughed out loud at this part:
“how do you keep such a warm smile on your face amidst all the Twilight chaos?” Put simply, Jackson replied that
“in the monkey kingdom, baring one’s teeth has a different connotation. Beware.” Hahaha I love him!

And he explained that about papercut so well. At the begining it was what I thougth because at the end of Twilight she bleed a lot but he didn't react, and a little papercut sets him of.. It's true, location, and circumstances make a lot of sense. Quiet room, with calm situtation and all of a sudden he smells blood, it took him by surprise and instinct kicked in.

Oh Jackson "I can kill from 10 feet away with a spear . . . Purty sweeeeeetttt ." haha I can't wait to see him as Sokka.

Finally, a post for my man ; D I love you Jackson. I so hope his role is so much better than in Twilight. Besides the wonderful eye candy he provided and his like whole two or three lines. I could stare at him all day. He seems so likeable and really grateful for his fans, he really doesn't seem to take all the Twilight business to heart, he just likes to have a good time, he can bite me anytime, I will give my self paper cuts lmao. it's simple they got that part (another part) of the film wrong. In the book Jasper and Emmett didn't stay as there was too much blood which is the real explanation

well. i personally don't find the inconsistency that big of an issue. becasue in twilght when bella was bleeding, jasper was WAY to distracted by anger and a different type of bloodlust to be concerned with bella. who was fairly far away. whereas in new moon it was a smaller area. where there were no distractions and everyones main concern was him attempting to hurt bella. you know ???
