Actor Michael Sheen, who played high-profile roles in The Queen and Frost/Nixon, is set to take on the role of Aro in New Moon, with an estimated £5million payday. This according to the Daily Mail, which says–
Sheen, 40, who made his name with uncannily realistic portrayals of well-known figures in Oscar-winning films The Queen, Frost/Nixon and The Damned United, will get his biggest pay cheque yet, a reported £5million, to star in New Moon.
In New Moon, Sheen will play Aro, the leader of an Italian vampire clan called the Volturi.
Director Chris Weitz confirmed Sheen’s casting to The Mail on Sunday and said he had ‘aggressively’ pursued the actor.
‘Michael’s role is so important because he’s the head of all vampires,’ he said. ‘Aro is, on the surface, a very gracious and friendly vampire, but beneath that he is a tremendous threat.’
Ironically, Michael Sheen previously played the werewolf leader Lucian in Underworld. I think this is great news, given his great work in Frost/Nixon recently! What do you guys think?

I know it does no good complaining but I think its a horrible choice. First I thought Aro would be much older. Second I dont like how they have Aro so much older than Caius. Third he doesnt look intimidatiing enough. I know they can change that but still. But since it is what it is I guess Ill learn to embrace it I suppose.

also it makes no sense to cast someone young for Caius, and someone older for Aro, theyre all around the same age.
They should have casted Ben Barnes for Aro, since he's much younger, and fits the picture of Aro better.
Im not longer going to see the movie because Im really not pleased with this choice, and Aro is one of my favorite characters, seeing him potrayed by someone who doesn't fit the part, will ruin it for me.

He looks suitably creepy. I thought they'd have someone younger to fit with Jamie but this guy has a sort of ageless face. I think he will make a good Aro – he certainly has the intense frightening stare I imagined Aro would have.

He looks exactly how I pictured Aro minus the long silver/grey hair (which they can just give a him a wig for that) but his face looks exactly how I pictured him.And I'm pretty sure they can make him look a LOT more scary with make-up.

Credit to Summit, they seem to be choosing actors with credentials. It would have been so easy to choose an actor that might fit the image of Aro but not have the ability to potray the underlying evil of Aro. This is just wetting my appetite for November(or more likely January by the time Ireland gets it)

I am even more excited about New Moon now!!! They are choosing some great actors!! After the first movie I was worried about what they would do with New Moon because let's face it; Even though I really liked Twilight , it was a bit of a disappointment with all the awesome stuff from the book that was left out to make room for made up scenes( for those of us who LOVE the books anyway). But I can see that they are taking this VERY seriously. November CANNOT come soon enough! Can we just skip through summer? ! :->

Good choice, but I'd pictured Aro being played by Bill Nighy (Viktor, Underworld), and Michael Sheen playing Caius or Marcus. Still, good choice. Can't wait for the finished product….
I have to say something because its been a heavy weight on my mind and it always comes up when I discuss New Moon. Ok see if you agree or not……I think they have established that Twilight was a HUGE hit right?….Soooooo I definatly think that they should make New Moon lllloooonnnnggggeeeerrrrrrr!! Dont you? Think about the advantages and people will totally go see a 3 hour movie that has eye candy everywhere, and establish the characters better, geez I could go on an on!!!! I would love if the movie were long but i have one point to make that might be a problem. Whats the longest point in the book? Bella and Jacob, right? If the movie were longer the biggest portion of it would be Bella hangin out with Jake. I dont have a problem with that only because i have read the books many times and im a fan, but there are a lot of ppl that have not read the books that are going to watch this movie. My mother watched Twilight and fell in love with Edward. I, not being able to control myself, told her that Edward leaves Bella and then Bella and Jake become best friends. She didnt like that at all!!!!!!! Her exact words were ” Who is that little tan boy? I dont like it, its not right, im not watching the movie, i like Edward better. LOL!! Twilight series fans know how important this part of the story is for the following books, right. We arnt going to get board…but, i think those who have not read the series might. I hope that they do make it longer but i also hope that they keep all of the little extra things that made the book more interseting. Im not saying that they should keep it the same amount of time as Twilight so please dont be offended by my comment:)

Rachel, I could NOT agree with you more! I have been trying to keep this in but its ALL about come out. Before I begin, I understand that they were working with a small budget but honestly SOOO many VITAL parts of Twilight were left out! After watching the special features and seeing that she was concerned with things like the apple irony in the cafeteria scene and not portraying this INCREDIBLE love between Edward and Bella makes me FURIOUS!!!! I mean through the movie you HEAR them talk about how much they love each other but YOU DON'T SEE IT! There is NOT enough Bella & Edward the meadow scene could have been more, SHOULD HAVE been more. I disagree with you…I think i read somewhere on Stephenie Meyers website that she had some pull as to who is cast for each character. I think that whoever SM chooses for Aro (if she did have a say in it) is perfect. Remember that when we read the book we put mental pictures with the caracters, SM is the creator of the twilight world. Her mental picture is a little more important than ours.

I have read through all this (I think) and he probably will be great but I still like little known actors – but good ones – instead of high dollar more established ones. The scenes in Italy are intense and will be great, but they are not really the STORY. Bottom line is that they follow the BOOK!

Wow! Michael Sheen… WOW! I have tremendous respect for the guy. He played a fantastic role as Lucian in Underworld. If you haven't seen it, please do. The comments and ratings of “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” on IMDB (and other sites) are incredible, he's such a good actor. The cast will be honored to act alongside him. I was actually expecting someone much older but he will be great as Aro. And since Summit had already casted Jamie Campbell Bower to play Caius, they just have to make him really old for the part. New Moon will be great!

I saw this “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” Movie, just because I haven't seen another Vampire movie, so I Choose it. I have to confess that I cried, a lot! He's a terrific actor! Amazing really, Very pasionated.

I thought the same thing, when I read the books I got the intension that their human age was young but they were so physically old that their skin started to crumble. But if anything I would replace the kid who plays Caius because everyone knows Sheen is a great actor. But when I think about Twilight I think they also messed up on the casting for either Edward or Emmit(Don't bash me for saying this) because when I read the book I pictured Emmit to be a very big guy. But Pattinson is a little bit taller then Lutz.

I actually love this decision. Yes, Casius is young, but it does't really matter. I like having someone middle–aged have a prominent part as a vampire because it kinda shakes off the teeny vibe a little.

He is exactly what I pictured when I first read the series. I thought that all the Volturi were around the same age as Carlisle and Michael Sheen looks around the same age as Peter Facinelli. Frost/Nixon was nominated for best picture this year so he's probably worth it.

My first reaction is disappointment, I can't help it. I'm just not excited he'll be Aro. I like him as an actor and I've seen him in several films, including Underword and Rise of the Lycans…and that's another reason why I'm not so psyched about it. I don't like the connection it will make with Underworld..
I think I just have to get used to it, it was a surprise.
In the end I think he'll be great, but I just have to start thinking about him as Aro.
But I'm glad they took a youngish actor, I always thought they'll make a mistake and cast some old men. And that would be so wrong.

I have never heard of this actor but lookwise I am just glad they went with someone closer to carlisle's age than someone like jamie. I agree that it is a bit odd to cast someone so young to play caius and someone 20 yrs older to play aro. If michael sheen can act like all of you say he can, then I'll stay optimistic about this casting choice. In the end I think the performance is what 's the most important than the actor's appearance.
I just hope that jamie was a mistake and that he is playing alec instead of caius. I was actually getting used to the idea of ben barnes being aro given the casting choice of jamie, but we'll have to wait and see.

Saw Michael in the Underworld movie he was good. But really would rather Ben Barnes as Aro than Michael and yes an actor does make a difference when cast in a movie since Ben was rumored as Aro since December. He was the only one I can see as Aro. Anyone else is dissappointing. So if they can cast Ben Barnes in the movie maybe as Demetri. Then I will be excited to see it. As of right now I can wait for the DVD. I guess I am not a twilight fan more of a Ben Barnes fan that will love to see him get a part in this movie.

I only saw the first Underworld movie and sorry I found it ridiculous, not a fan but that doesn't mean I do not like this choice. I think he'll do just fine, I did find him good looking in Underworld though lol. Maybe if I watched it now I'd might like it more hehe. I agree with everyone else, you can't write off the movie, just because you disapprove of their choice of actor for Aro (who I think will actually be pretty perfect for playing Aro)! When I looked through the set photo's for Twilight and saw who plays Carlisle, I was disappointed too, as I didn't think he fit the part very well at all, but when I saw the actual movie, the make up etc made him look a completely different person.
Besides – we all conjure up different images in our heads when we read books, it would be crazy if we didn't. Therefore not everyone is ever likely to be 100% satisfied with the results of a movie when it's been based on a book we've read. Seriously, if I'd based my decision to watch Twilight on whether I liked their choice of actors etc, I would never watched it. Absolutely none of them, except perhaps Bella & Edward, fit the way I'd imaged they might look, yet I still watched the movie, twice in one week of owning it in fact!
Stephenie never described them as old men, just ancient vampires. In human terms they could have been any age, though probably young given life expectancy a couple of thousand years ago when they became vampires. The ancient look she described is some form of petrification from being inactive for too long (we're not talking grey hair and wrinkles here). They will get this petrification effect with make up and wigs etc (people use your imaginations here as no one really knows what a mouldy old vampire looks like, do they?). The most important thing would be that these guys can act a tricky part and having seen both Jamie and Michael in other films it looks to me like they've made a good choice.

People didn't make it to that age a couple of 1000 years ago (which is about the age in vampire terms of the three volturi leaders) so they could not have been much older then 40 and more likely to be in their 20s. The oldness described in the book is petrification which they should achieve with makeup. In the film they may all look very similar once they've got make-up and wigs on.

So true. I've been ranting and raving about the cast list since they confirmed Taylor was still Jacob. I don't feel as bad now that someone agreed, as soon as I posted that I wasn't sure what the response would be. BUT! its the little things they missed that upset me. There are so many moments in the book, so many conversations they had that just flat out should have been in the movie. I personally think they could have made a 5 hour movie and NO ONE would have been complaining LOL. It felt like CH made a list of things that HAD to be in the movie and then found the best way to string it all together. Rob & Kristen have such good on camera chemistry if they had had better direction that would have been portrayed on screen. I read the books before I watched the movie and I can't imagine what people thought that watched the movie first.
I haven't seen the Underworld movies so I don't know what he's like in that, but you should watch some of Michael Sheen's other movies, like Frost/Nixon or The Queen and you'll see what a great actor he is.

I kinda agree with Ter05. Yes the Volturi become more important later on but for the most part, New Moon is more about Bella dealing without Edward and her developing relationship with Jacob.

I totally agree. The only downside to New Moon being longer is I won't be able to squeeze in as many opening day showings as I did for Twilight. Oh well, I guess I can just take an extra vacation day.
That's hilarious! I shared my audiobooks with my best friend (she has a 2 hour Bay Area commute 3 times a week for school) and the second it sunk in that Edward left she called to rant about what an @$$ Edward is. She has been Team Jacob ever since.

I'm also a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of Lord of the Rings and have been since I was like five. When I found out they were making movies, I was beyond thrilled, but I was also concerned about the casting, and not just for Gandalf. I didn't think a lot of the people were the right people to be playing the parts. But then I saw the movies, and I don't think Peter could have cast them better. Everyone in it was AMAZING and they did a fantastic job of bringing my all-time favorite book series to life (sorry, but because I've been a fan for so long, LotR trumps Twilight).
So, anyway, I'm THRILLED with Michael Sheen being cast as Aro. And, as far as Dakota Fanning and Jamie Campbell-Bower are concerned…I wasn't thrilled about them initially, but, since Chris cast Michael Sheen, I'm going to assume that Dakota and Jamie did amazing in their auditions, so I'll reserve my judgment about them until I see the finished product.
Apparently they are holding out on us, because Jamie said in an interview with BBC that he knew the rest of the casting but wasn't at liberty to tell them. Why must Summit torture us so?
Really dissapointed! Wanted Ben Barnes instead. Oh well Michael will proberly do good, but not in my eyes. I will always see Ben as Aro!!!!!

Awesome! Michael Sheen will do absolute wonders for Aro's part! I loved him in Underworld, he made a wonderfully powerful-yet compassionate Lycan leader! He played a werewolf very passionately (I could not help but feel for him/feel his torture, pain, anguish, and drive to be beyond what he was-striving to get what he wanted), and I am so glad that now in New Moon (and hopefully beyond to Eclipse as well as Breaking Dawn) that he gets a chance to play the vampire leader just as passionately!!! You go Michael!!! Oh yeah, I have to add a little blurb in agreement to one of the comments I read…Thank goodness Aro will be played by someone who is not a kid! Please don't take nothing personal in my statement, cause I really do get that the purpose of the Twilight series storyline was to center around the teenage love between Bella and Edward, BUT come on, what keeps the story going is the vampires!!! So…as vampires, I still picture all the Volturi elders as just that…elders! Not just in the years they have walked the earth but in the wisdom that they possess…which should easily be expressed on their faces…I just think that someone over 30 is a better match to play the Volturi vampire moguls, because I believe they project that all-important wisdom better, that's all! Well…maybe…Not EXaCTLY all yet…one more thing…since the Twilight series and the people in and behind Twilight all get a lot of press, even off the set, I think it's best that the public see that someone who plays a character with that much power…like Aro, actually really has been around AWHiLE…in human years.

Agree totally Michael Sheen is a fantastic actor, who has taken on many well known and distinct personalities on television and in movies and made them all believable. Forget all the people saying Dakota Fanning will show them all up, Michael Sheen will act them all off the screen, and yes I'm sorry to say this (don't hate me!) including the lovely Rob.
Robin I agree with you there. My impression was that they had the papery texture to the skin because they were very old even for vampires, but they could have been any age when they changed. They aren't all necessarily the same age, Stephanie wrote that they had been around for three thousand years, I don't remember her specifying what age they were when they changed.
And for anyone moaning about the amount he is getting paid, please note it does say 'reported' which as this comes from a British newspaper, albeit one of the more quality ones, I would take it with a huge pinch of salt.

this is the best news ever!!! I mean he is just so amazing and will be the BEST asset to this movie series! Now I just hope the other actors make good amounts of money for being the actual stars of the film. I don't like thinking that a big name gets more money for a small part than those who are carrying the film.

Anyhow, back to Aro, from werewolf to vampire, how serendipitous, but I did see him in the last Underworld movie and thought he plays scary and intimidating quite well.

I completely agree, that was something I thought about Twilight too, they had to kinda cram in a lot of the film in the last 30 mins or so to get it all in, I would have loved to see the airport scene at the end of twilight, would have built up the suspense more and of course more of the meadow ha!
I think they HAVE to make new moon longer they won't fit all the important stuff into 190 mins and if they do it will be rushed. I think Martin is an excellent choice for Aro, still a bit confused about Cauis but I'm sure it'll be fine when it's all put together. CAN'T WAIT!!

People were unsure about Rob playing Edward, but that obviously worked out great. Why? Bcus Rob is alot like Edward in real life..gorgeous yet kinda awkward. So, kudos to Chris Weitz!! couldn't agree more with Robin's comments…this guy is quality, period! he blew me away in Queen and I loved him in the Underworld series. He will add great credibility to the film franchaise and will help draw in a larger segment of the viewing public that might have been missed due to the ' tween ' reputation of Twilight. I think he is PERFECT …not so sold on the the Caius casting though, but that IS a relatively small roll, …time will tell. Aro NEEDED to be a perfect cast and he IS!
I think you just made the point for making the movie longer. We all wanted Edward back after he left and I know that I wasn't so happy when Bella started depending on Jacob so much. That was until I started to fall in love with him as well. It's important to the series to understand her attachment to him. If the movie audience doesn't get the chance to fall in love with Jacob then Eclipse and Breaking Dawn won't make much sense at all. Don't get me wrong, my heart filled with joy when Edward returned but I'm with Bella on this one…I love them both I just love Edward more!

hey there, i know on this website it says Jamie Campbell-Bower is playing Caius, but everything else I've read says he has been cast for Alec, which makes more sense to me, as they probably cast Jane and Alec at the same time, and Fanning, and Bower, were cast around the same time, also, although the books don't specify that Aro, Caius, and Marcus are the same age, in the movie world, it makes more sense for actors around the same age/looking like the same age, to be cast for these parts.. you can check out rottentomatos.com, thats where i saw Jamie campbell-Bower for Alec first.

King of Warewolves to king of vampires, wonderful…I am sooo excited. This movie is going to be amazing. I love the books, I have to admit I am hoping they do move away from New Moon a little, actually a lot. I want more vampires and less Jacob. They could make the show down in Italy so much better.

They've already cast him as Caius, so I have a feeling that that will be that and nothing can be done. And am I the only one that doesn't want to see him as Alec? He may be young but next to Dakota Fanning, doesn't look young enough. Plus he's too tall… Again, this is just comparing him to Dakota.

I kindve agree with you… Im not happy with some of the choices but i would never not watch the sequel just because of the casting choices… In the first movie i hated the minor characters but they grew on me after awhile… Also from what i heard alot of people hated Rob in the role as Edward at first but he is the most amazing actor and he pulled Edward off so perfectly so i will wait to really hold judgement on how well done the characters are…. I cant wait for November to get here to see the new movie, the wait is gonna be dreadful!!

i saw the movie and it was very good for not sticking to close to the book they did the same thing to twilight and it was sad to see some lines you just want to hear…jacobs scenes were changed but shown in a good way which was nice and as sheen for aro was truly amazing aros character is sneaky and deceiving but truthful in the same way and sheen motions and the way he acted was just awesome im sure some will disagree but jane wasnt what i liked i thought fanning would pull it off but her voice is still that of a little girl and jane is such a powerful creature not that fanning wasnt intoxicating she was amazing just her voice took me by suprise the ending frustrates me and if you have not seen it i will not ruin it for you but its from the not at the part it should be and fyi peter F was amazing for his scenes i almost teared up for what he said
