Washington State Law May be Enacted Due to Twilight

by Will on April 9, 2009 · Comments

in Twilight

Washington Twilight Law Are you bummed that the sequel to Twilight, New Moon, won’t be filming in Washington state, like the original? Due to the revenue lost, a state Senator is trying to pass legislation–Washington Substitute House Bill number 2042–to make sure that other productions like New Moon won’t move to Vancouver or elsewhere–

The Seattle PI (see Pillow Biters) claims that state Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles, a Senate Democrat in Washington, was miffed by the fact that, even though The Twilight Saga: New Moon’s literary setting is in the Olympic Peninsula of the United States, it is presently filming in British Columbia (Vancouver), Canada.

The Act provides that all money received for the establishment of a motion picture competitiveness program will be diverted to such avenues as health insurance payments on a retirement plan and a tax credit marketer to promote the state’s tax credit programs, as well as administrative costs.

Check out the rest at the Examiner! [thanks, Andrea!]

As someone who was born in forks and spent all my summers there with my grandparents, I was very disapointed that the movie's were not filmed in Forks. There is no freeway in forks, the school does not over look a lake, there is no restaruant like the one in movie exept one, and you are not allowed to surf at the beach. If a book is set in a certain spot, I really feel like it should be filmed there. Forks is making money off this movie which is really good for them, being such a small town they really need the money, however, it's not ligit money when the movie was not made there. I understand the tax breaks of making the movie in Oregon or Canada, but you really need to stay true to the book and true to the town and the good people in forks.

I wish I was in Vancouver!!! I would definitely visit the set!!
  • IM SO PSYCHED im glad they are making it in canada way closer to a twelve hour drive from me i would so be willing to take i hope they film eclipse here too :D
  • yuka
ugh, what is up with the government these days. If they make that law, then the movie businesses wont want to film a movie there cus they would HAVE to film there again for a sequel. Who cares. Let the industry film where they want. Those governments are so whiney.

    i want a career in the film in dustry when i grow up :}
  • Lia
....That's not what the law is saying AT ALL
  • yuka
    hahahaha. oh sorry
i never know what im saying
    nevermind.
    is it about politics?
lol i dont understand anything D:
    haha
  • Gizmo
Washington will have to get more film industry shops and people there if they want stuff to be filmed there regularly and not lose it to Vancouver. Vancouver has everything they may need and more.
  • TeamBella♥TeamEdward
I hope the law passes. I would love the state of Washington to become more "film friendly" and affordable. I might be biased as I am from Washington but I do think this is one of the most beautiful states in America and more importantly the book is based in Forks, WA. When I go site seeing (like thousands of other twicracks) in Forks it would feel more authentic if the movie was actually filmed there.

I also know however, that if this law passes it does not force Twilight or any other movie to be filmed in WA state. It's simply a law to make the state more cooperative with movie makers. So unfortunately, we most likely will not be seeing anymore future Twilight movies in the state of Washington. :(
  • allie
    Agreed!!!
  • Lia
Are you all reading the same article as me? Because nowhere does it say Washington wants the rights to Twilight.
The law is about drawing more film makers into Washington State by making it more affordable.
It's NOT "a law to make sure they still get paid for sagas orginally filmed in thier state then moved."
Where does it say that? What are you reading?
  • as long as the movie is being made into a fantastic movie i really dont care where they shoot he he ha ha :)
  • BAM6AM88 -- Kristen is love :)
LOL. um. a law to make sure they still get paid for sagas orginally filmed in thier state then moved? um... okay? they should be glad they got the revenue they did for the first film....i do kinda see where they woulda got alot more money if newmoon was filmed in washington cuz so many more people are on board w/ the saga...BUT still. Its got its start there. be happy with that. it isnt the films responsiblity to bring in income for the rest of the saga......
  • Lia
That's not what the law is saying!
  • Lindsey
Um, FYI Twilight was filmed in Oregon. "Forks" high school was in Kalama, OR. The falls they showed right before the baseball scene were the Multnomah Falls along HW 84. And that beautiful helicopter shot when Bella & Edward are in the trees...The Columbia river folks. Also along HW 84. Edwards car has Oregon plates in one shot. So to the Seattle PI, I'm giving you the "your special" award and I think you need to start taking the short bus to school. As for our little friend Lia, sweetie, relax. Due the state of the world right now sometimes it's better to just escape to another world, otherwise I'd be jumping off the Multnomah Falls tomorrow. And Lia, calling people "stupid" is both immature and counter productive. Take a deep breath and RELAX. Me being obsessed w/ Twilight is better the me being obsessive over getter pregnant which is taking forever. It actually helps to relax me. Don't judge.
  • Camzky090791
I'm a WA resident and as far as I know KALAMA is in Washington. I've been there. And there was also the part of the movie where they shot the scene where Edward was explaining Bella about the tofu thing..that was near Univ.of WA(just saying). But I think this bill is kind of stupid if you think about it. If they film the other sequels here..well that would be great on my part but if it doesn't ...that's alright too. As long as the movie delivers I'm good.
  • Lindsey
Ok, hold up, you're right. Kalama is in WA. I forgot. I'm a WA native who moved to OR about 2 years ago so I get a little confused. Kathrine Hardwick did say that it was WA. She just pronounced it wrong. Anyway, the point is WA doesn't get the "rights" to the movie just because a few scenes were filmed there. It was also filmed in OR, due to the wetter weather. And one of the reasons it got moved to Vancouver is due to BOTH states being inhospitable to businesses. Surprise surprise. Damn Liberals!!!
  • allie
Katherine Hardwicke doesn't know what she's talking about. The View Point Inn is not in Portland- she said it was. It's east of Portland in a town called Corbett. Also the scene where Bella and Edward are talking about blood, and he mentions tofo- is filmed at the Shire. Which is owned by the University of OR, NOT WASHINGTON. This area of land is along the Columbia River Gorge. She should fact check before she states things in DVD commentaries!
  • Lia
You guys obviously don't understand this.
This is a law for Washington State, not Twilight.
Washington wants more movies shot in Washington, so they're passing this law.
They aren't saying, 'you can't shoot this movie somewhere else because it's based here.'
Twilight was just an example given of movies Washington lost because of high prices, the law itself wasn't based on Twilight. Washington has lost plenty of movies/tv shows to Vancouver, and they want to change that.

Are all Twilight fans this stupid?
Or are you all just so obsessed with Twilight, that everything, like this law, has to center around Twilight too?
  • allie
As a fellow Washington state resident, I follow (and agree) completely with what you are saying, and also don't understand why no one else seems to get it.

And Kalama is NOT in Oregon (to the comment down bel0w). I would be more than happy to show you photos and Kalama on a map!!!!
  • The example the senator gave of a production that moved because WA was no longer economically viable was Twilight--that's the only point being made. Keywords in article "make sure that other productions *like* New Moon"

Are all people named Lia this stupid?
Or are you all just so obsessed with Lia-ness, that everything, like this law, has to center around Lia too? <--just showing how silly it is to call people stupid as a group
  • Chrystina
I believe Twilight was partially filmed in Washington.. Portland is barely a jump from the Washington boarder. But this law is ridiculous... as a WA state resident, it is so stinkin expensive here. There are lots of films that go to Vancouver because it is much cheaper. I don't blame Summit one bit!
  • Maryann Bjordal
TeamWolfPack thanks for the explanation. I still think they may be too late with this law as Eclipse IS set to be filmed in Vancouver, from what I can understand anyways. They may get Breaking Dawn to film there but who knows how this works out. But with Eclipse that may be a lost cause? I just don't see how they can force a production coming out of an LA based company to film in another state just cos the first film was filmed mostly in..Oregon? They did film some in Washington State according to the commentary but not all of it was filmed there?
  • Your welcome. I think it has a lot to do with local production companies as well. I could be wrong though. Location is another reason why I find the law laughable. Twilight was filming in Oregon, Arizona, and California too. It's a pretty mundane and greedy law to be honest but I can understand.
It brings a TON of money into the state and respective towns. It is very hard to lose that profit to another place.
  • Lia
Okay, you don't get my point here.
This law is not saying that a movie should be shot where it takes place!
The law is not saying that!
They're trying to make Washington more film friendly, PRICE WISE.
Washington State isn't saying that they should get the money because that's where Twilight takes place!
Where are you guys even pulling that information from this article? It doesn't say that AT ALL!
  • Lia
sorry, I posted this under the wrong reply....
  • I was about to say lol I got the point. I promise. I was just trying to explain what I thought it meant. If I am wrong then I am not afraid to admit it.
  • Robessed!
Who cares! Vancouver has great locations and so far its delivered with an exact replica of all the places in Forks! I think New Moon locations will be so much better and on top of that the Canadian dollar works better for Hollywood. I doubt that they would go back to Washington to film anymore... Cheaper and better to film up in Vancouver =)
  • I<3TwilightSaga
i don't care where it is as long there is going to be a movie...
  • Lovin_the_Cullens_n_Bella
    I agree with you too.
  • ya i sooo agree
  • Joy
That's stupid. The first one was filmed in Portland, that is also not in Washington. And they're in Canada, so the law wouldn't pertain to them anyway would it.
  • pdxgirl
Exactly. The high school is located in Kalama which is barely in Washington, and a boat scene was filmed in Vancouver WA about 20 feet into Washington, and the rest was filmed in and around Portland. Seriously people, don't make a fuss without knowing where they actually were filming.
  • Maryann Bjordal
I am still confused, I didn't think that another state law could prevent a Hollywood production to film there due to THAT state's law? Also at this point I am sure that permits, agreements etc all are set in stone for filming Eclipse there so whatever this law states, it is too late?
  • Bottom line...

Twilight brought in money to the state of Washington.
The Twilight sequel(s) would have brought even more money into the state of Washington.
The law wants to force sequels, such as New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn, to remain in the state of Washington.
They want to keep the revenue that is pumped into Washington State rather than lose it to another state.
  • Andrea
I do think it's pretty silly that they don't film in Forks....But c'mon that's pretty ridiculous.
  • ...
do you want better film or right location???
  • I think what the article says is, because New Moon is not being filmed in Washington, as Twilight was, the state lost the revenue the film would bring. Fans filling hotels, actors renting hotel rooms, eating establishments lose money, rental car companies, the government, the list goes on and on.

As for the law. It's beyond stupid. That is like the state of North Carolina prohibiting me from moving to another state, because I have been here my entire life. New Moon, as with all movies, need to film in a location that is cheap, so they can spend their budget on other things. Such as CGI, salaries, fees, hotels, and what not. The cheaper they can go with mundane things the better for them.

It's all about money and how to save as much as they can for everything else.
  • Thanks I was so confused by that, I new it was about money but I didnt understand what they where trying to do with the law issue.

I thought they had to move location because there was another film being made in Portland at the same time.
  • Your welcome. Towns and states can really make a killing when a film comes to town. There are fees and local/state law enforcement for protection, catering, and so much stuff.

It's just a money thing though, but I thought another film was being made there as well.
  • Jbells
I agree with Deedee81..Is this what they are saying?? lol
  • I went into the article to see if I could understand it. Basically I think they have realised that they have missed out on a huge money making deal, and as it says in the books that the town is forks, it should be filmed there, so they are now going to force it legally that it has to be filmed there. I don't know though I'm still a bit confused.
  • I'm a bit lost with this...Are they saying that because they moved filming to Vancouver they have lost money?? Somebody help me out here please.
  • Jbells
Wait so what exactly are they saying??
  • Tracy
Bring it! As a native Seattlelite, I'm SICK and TIRED of seeing films with screenplays based in Washington State, but actually filmed elsewhere. Aside from the obvious shots that can be filmed on a sound stage, scenes that showcase a landmark, a specific area, or particular foliage, etc. should (IMHO) be filmed in that location as much as possible.
  • Jbells
Oh good point..Lovely penguins..But if uve seen all the pics latley.Everything looks pretty much the same..Just a few diffs..Its ok!!! Kellan, Kristen, Taylor, Rob and Ashley all said that this movie was gonna follow the book more, and be even better than the first.. Yeah seriosuly though, they are never gonna pass that one!! lol
  • lovelypenguins
Maybe I'm slow but if they don't film in the same spot how will they get the houses to look the same??
  • marie
look for the news in this web site, they have the new bella's house and the new school, they made it look almost the same ,it looks nice.
  • i love rob
Well....they built a set of Bella's house, so that will look exactly the same. Not sure what they are going to do about the Cullen house! Maybe they'll just build a set of the inside of the house......
  • Victoria
so... is it a good thing?? I didnt know that a law like this even exist... I supose its nice, but I dont see the truly problem why they cannt film at Vancouver...??? Quote: "to make sure that other productions like New Moon won’t move to Vancouver or elsewhere"
I just dont get it... D:
  • JSPT
Yeah right...good luck getting that one passed!
  • i love rob
Yeah....I bet they're kicking themselves in the ass!!!! They're wishing New Moon was filming there!!!! And I'm sure they are gonna try to get Eclipse to film there! But somehow, I think Eclipse is going to stay in Vancouver! They're all set in Vancouver! And since there will only be a couple of months between filming, probably won't be worth moving again!
  • IndiesR
    You got that right! :)
