Will There be “Twilight Knock-offs” from The Success of the Saga?

by Will on April 27, 2009 · Comments

in Commentary, Twilight

Den of Shadows House of Night Vampire Academy Twilight With the success of Twilight in both film and book form, the Deadbolt questions whether it will spawn a whole new period of supernatural entertainment. They note the Rome wasn’t built in a day–so all the stuff coming down the pipeline may not be apparent yet, however there are already quite a few works in the Twilight style that are doing pretty well–

Fiction franchises like House of Night, Den of Shadows, and the Vampire Academy have lured legions of loyal fans, especially young adults who relate most to the recipe of fantasy and real and relatable teen issues. As successful as each series has been, now amid the popularity of Twilight, New Moon and its stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner, you can easily make the argument that these books are simply capitalizing on the previous success of other novels. If it weren’t for one, there wouldn’t be another. It’s a cycle that has existed throughout the centuries of literature, fuelled by money and profit off of something that’s already proven itself lucrative. None of this is new, of course. In the movie world prior to Twilight and New Moon, we went from Lord of the Rings to Harry Potter to Asian Remake, all with a slew of similar stories and concepts that clogged up the theatres until the last dollar was coughed up. Comic book geeks, sorry to say, you’re next.

Now that the Twilight Saga has garnered so much worldwide attention in the production stages, a question of the Twilight ripple-effect comes to mind. How many similarly themed novels, movies, and TV shows will we see because of Twilight and New Moon? How many are already being written, in production, or now wrapped or in post-production? There’s one that we know of for certain.

I find it interesting how the cover of most of the book series mentioned follow a fairly similar design motif as the Twilight series, especially House of Night and Den of Shadows with its monochromatic black and white with pops of red.

Have any of you been drawn in by other pieces of supernatural fiction?

[thanks, Lisa/LMCullen]

  • Honestly, I'm not drawn to the other series of vampire books. I think what sucked me into twilight was the amazing romance of Edward and Bella. Its something, you won't find everywhere, regardless if the book is about vampires or not.
  • i love rob
I agree!!!! That's what I love about Twilight....the romance!!!! It makes you remember what it was like to feel that way!!!!

Don't get me wrong....I love my husband...and I am happily married to him! But if Rob came along and asked me to leave my hubby......I think I would!!! LOL!!!
  • honey bee
    ROFL

Hey, ilr, at least you are honest! ;} I would do the same. :x You would have to be crazy to turn down such a fine specimen. :p
  • i love rob
Absolutely crazy!!!! How could I say no?????
  • v_m
Do you mind me ask this question: You would leave your husband when "Edward" asked you or "Rob" ask you?
My own answer to that is "Edward?.... maybe" "Rob?.. I am not sure."
I hope I am not getting slash by people, but I have a beautiful baby boy with my lovely husband... It is quite a lot to give up.
  • i love rob
I don't mind at all.....and my answer is Rob! I am totally and utterly obsessed with him!!!!

And yes, it's a lot to give up!!!! I have 2 children with my hubby....and in reality....I'm talking a lot of sh*t!!!!! Of course I wouldn't just leave like that!! That's just in my fantasy world!!!!! LOL!!!
  • yeah but if it was an indecent proposal...one night only...you so would! lmao
  • i love rob
Ok...between you, me and the millions of people who are on this site.....you're right I absolutely would!!!!

And possibly, from guilt, I would end up divorced and then I could marry Rob anyway...fantasy world again!!! LMAO!
  • LOL....nothing wrong with a bit of fantasy! If I wasn't single right now I would so get my bloke to put on a Jacob wig and let the wolf inside him out! LMAO
  • abby0936
oh goodness. A Jacob wig? That would just turn me off right there! haha
Luckily my boyfriend has a haircut like Kellan's/Emmett's so I can always pretend! =D
  • i love rob
LOL!!! To be a fly on that wall......
  • abby0936
Haha. I don't know if that fly would ever recover from that!
  • LMAO
  • abby0936
See I would only runaway with Edward. Honestly, I'm not a fan of Rob. Edward is my dream man. I already told my boyfriend of 4 years that if Edward EVER came into my life then I would be gone! I love my boyfriend more than anything, but honestly Edward is the epitome of perfection and I think it would be hard for anyone to say no to that!
  • i love rob
I don't know, there is just something about Rob that just draws me to him!!! Actually, I think it's everything about him!!!! I just think he's just......Ahhh!!! I can't even describe it!!!! LOL!
  • abby0936
Haha. I know what you mean. I'm that way about Kellan. =D
  • tweter76 . . . vamplover
What's funny is that most of the younger fans don't see Rob for Rob . . . they see him as Edward. I think there is a difference between the Rob fans and Rob as Edward fans and the biggest difference is age!
  • i love rob
That is soooo true!!! And he's said that....whenever an interviewer has made a comment about the fans loving him..he would reply that they don't love him, they love his character!

I, on the other hand, love him!!!! The character is great....but the man is what I love!
  • v_m
I am afraid to know which way do you mean about the "biggest different is age" to be fan for "Rob" or "Rob as Edward". Ha haa hhaaa..

I meant I like Rob as a talented actor with excellent knowledge of music, a charming person to people around him. But I don't know "enough" about him to say that I really love him. ( Ha ha, I am getting too serious here I think....)
However, when I read the books (plus the midnight sun), because it is the words I read combined with my imaginations, in my head Edward become the most attractive person to me. The most perfect creation in this world that I might, really would, give up everything to be with him. (again, too serious...)

I've got a question....how old is Edward's state of mind? Is he supposed to be a 17 years old? or what 1918 to now.. that should make him a young person with old mind? or is he some how overcome that differents and can choose ways to look at things between young and old? This is actually a question that wonders me all the time.
  • tweter76 . . . vamplover
LOL! I know what you mean about Edward. Midnight Sun did it for me too! I think he is wise beyond his "years" so to speak. Yes, he is 17 and in some ways always will be but you can't live for almost 100yrs and not gain something from it. That is how I see him anyway.
  • peace,<3 ,fire,ice &compromise
I totally agree, for Edward i would in a heartbeat. hes the epitome of a romantic man that any woman would want ( despise the bloodthirst) and then theres ROB who in his own right is a very intellectual, observant and passionate guy. Plus the accent is to die for. Sigh i could go on and on. I told my boyfriend ( who i absolutely love and adore) that if he just gave me one free pass at Rob i woudl give him Five. i mean thats quite a deal!!!! lol. TEAM EDWARD!!
  • i love rob
LOL! That is a great deal!!! Now, my question to you is.....how long does your free pass last?????? A week. month,....what? I need to make a deal like this too!!!

And he gets what? 5 one day passes???
  • i sooo agree with :D
  • I also have zero interest in other vampire books. It actually took myself months of torture, and convincing by friends, to give in and start reading the saga. The only reason why was due to me being such a HUGE Buffy fan (now i'm like, Buffy who??!) I thought it was a lame rip off. And in ways, there are huge similarities. But there is NOTHING lame about the Saga, and as much as there are similarities, there are massive differences as well.

I love Vampires, that is what drew me in initially. Correction, I LOVE vampires who are in love w/ mortals. Gets me every time! lol

But as for those other "Books" .. other "TV shows (True Blood) and other "movies" ... good luck, ya'll need it!!
  • Audrey
I'm a big fan of the Twilight saga, obviously I'm here right? But as for the saga being without its faults, I don't agree with you, but that's a whole other conversation. I just wanted to point out that True Blood is doing very well, and as a matter of fact, the books came out before Twilight. If you have read the Sookie Stackhouse books (True Blood), you will find that there are so many similarities with Twilight. There is a mind-reader, the mind-reader is fascinated by the fact that there is someone who is impermeable to the mind-reading, therefore they fall in love... The main character's very good friend is a shapeshifter (usually a dog) who's in love with her, but she's in love with a vampire... I'm just saying, yes, Twilight is very popular, but Meyer's ideas aren't exactly new material!
  • honey bee
I've been eyeing the series every time I hit Borders one of these days I will pick it up! Thanks for the info, Audrey. It definitely sounds like something I would be interested in. I am waiting for the dvd release of season one.

I just picked up 'Let The Right One In" about Swedish adolescent vampires. Apparently there is a movie out as well, and I've heard it is...scary. *shudders*
  • RobCakes
I just finished reading "Let The Right One In", its a pretty good book if not slightly disturbing...
I wouldn't recommend the movie though, not very true to the book and not a great movie overall.
  • I never said Meyer's ideas were new material. ugh, and when did I say the Saga didn't have faults? Please don't put words in my mouth, I absolutely hate that. Re read what I wrote - I was speaking of BUFFY and TWILIGHT.

Also, ever hear of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel? Because they were BOTH out before True Blood. I've seen the show True Blood, and its horrible. I can't believe any of the recognition its getting, unfreakin' real.
  • honey bee
True Blood is really that bad? lol Well, that's a disappointment. I've never seen the show; I don't have HBO. I figured since everyone was talking about it, it would worth looking into. :]
  • honey bee
Argh, I left out the word *be*.
"it would *be* worth looking into."

    More coffee, please! ;}
  • onewithalice
I read the books that True Blood was based on. The Sookie Stackhouse novels were fun (and written about 7 years before Twilight, by the way) I thought they were very similar in a lot of ways, but way different too. The books were almost cheesy and were murder mysteries. A lot more erotic too. I did like them, but in a totally different way. They don't give you the same "obsessed" feeling you get with the twilight series. While I am waiting for the next Sookie book to come out this summer....I don't have widget countdowns like I do for other things *wink*....I am also not monitoring blogs constantly too like a stalker for them either. Why or why do we do this! LOL!
  • Audrey
OK, relax! : ) I didn't mean to put words into your mouth, I'm sorry I misunderstood you. I was referring to "NOTHING lame about the Saga". I just disagree with that, that's all. I'm entitled to my opinion about it. To love a book is also to be able to be critical about it, to acknowledge its "lame" moments. I don't mind that you don't see anything "lame" about the saga, but I was annoyed a few times while reading them. Please, don't take it the wrong way, I never intended to point the finger at you! I'm only reading the posts and commenting, stating my opinions. I respect your opinion, and I'm not trying to criticize you.

And as for me stating that Meyer's story isn't all new material, I wasn't saying that YOU said so. That's only how I feel about the article. Most books aren't all fresh material. It's how you make it your own that makes you stand out. I believe Meyer did a good job, but I was simply saying that True Blood might not be everyone's favorite, but it has a very decent following. It's got similarities, but has its own story. That's all.

As for other comments I've been reading below, I find it so funny when Twilighters get so protective and passionate about their beloved saga. Meyer's captured out hearts and minds, but she did not invent vampires. Sure, other series that have come afterwards might take advantage of the fact that vampires are all the rage now, but who cares. People might like them, and it's cool with me. I don't think they are necessarily knock-offs. The stories are different. If any of you had an awesome idea about a great vampire story right now, and if you were a writer, would you refrain from writing it because you'd be afraid to have people think you're a fraud? I would certainly write my story and see what happens...

I enjoyed the True Blood books and the House of Night. Yes, they are about vampires, but they are completely different stories. Not knock-offs...
  • ummm... you replied to MY post. Sorry if I assumed you were addressing me.........................
  • the night world series and the vamp diaries series have been around waaay longer since 1991, so all this vamp stuff is basically recycled, cant hate on one or the other!!!i like it all personally, everyone is entitled to their opinion but its all the same Sh*t...
    Besos!!!

  • tweter76 . . . vamplover
It's not necessarily that it's "new material" but it's how the material is presented. Once I got started on the series it sucked me in . . . I've read a lot of novels over the last 20 years or so and have NEVER been drawn to a Saga like this.
  • NuttyNetty
I love reading. period. hehe so i don't really care what the book is about as long as i enjoy reading it :) so i agree that there are a gazillion other books out there with similarities to Twilight. and i do enjoy reading other vampire books :) i like the classic old stories with vampires who want to seduce you and then suck your blood with their two sharp teeth that inject venom in you. hehehe i got chills already :D
  • Sia
Ok so the sookie and Twilight books only have two similiaries that doesn't make Stephenies work not new material ! STEPHENIE'S BOOKS VERE WAY OFF THE WHOLE VAMPIRE GENRE THAT'S WHY PEOPLE HATE ON IT AND that's why do much people love it.

SORRY I HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH YOU ON MEYERS WORK NOT BEING NEW !
  • lilrister
if you love vampires in love with mortals check out christine feehan's dark series or katie macalister christine is definaltely more "Dark" and katie is very funny but still very sexy :-)
  • yep I agree, I wouldn't read any other book just for the sake of it because its full of vampires. I never read this saga for the vampires I read it because everyone kept going about how good the books are.

If someone said that there was another set of books that were great and then I'd give then a go and if it was about vampires then so be it.

I think Steph did a great job with Twilight but I'm not a fan of The Host - the story doesn't grip you as fast as Twilight.
  • abby0936
I never really liked vampires before. I didn't hate them, but I wasn't obsessed with Buffy of Angel like my dad and sister were.
Just like SpaceHeater, I didn't read Twilight because it had vampires. I read it because all of my friends said it was sooo good and my best friend loaned me the book. After that, my life has been consumed, not necessarily with vampires, but more with the love, romance, humor, tragedy, and excitement of Twilight!
  • tweter76 . . . vamplover
    I agree . . . not into the Host.
  • I don't feel the connection between the couple as much...I'm not much of sci-fi fan so maybe thats why I don't like it so much
  • NuttyNetty
:O you DON'T feel the connection?! lol wow. that's a shocker for me. i felt their connection sooooo strongly! Ian and wanda show what true love really is :) unconditional. and i loved how you didn't see it coming =] I thought she was going to fall deeper in love with Jared. It was a great story that showed what it means to be human <333 i have to COMPLETELY disagree about the connection. there was also the love between wanda, Mel, and Jamie (awww) now that was sweet. and despite the pain and suffering there was a lot of hope and love and eventually peace :) it is my FAVE book and it makes me cry everyytttiimme i read it. =]
  • I haven't gotten beyond chapeter 17...just finding it too difficult to get into it. And twilight keeps calling out to me for a re-read...just finished new moon again for the 5th time last night and back on to Eclipse!
  • NuttyNetty
I know EXACTLY what you mean lol believe it or not i went through the same thing!!! haha I started reading it and was like hhhmm ok i made it this far (half way or so) might as well finish it. THEN somewhere in the middle (around the desert part) you get HOOKED i had it baaaaaadddd. I COULDN'T put it down. worse than twilight fever lol I cried soooo much and the book wasn't even over! i was like oh my goodness stephanie! you are a genious!!!! lol i fell in love with the characters so much and am not afraid to say that i would much rather be Team Ian than Team Edward :P I hada tough time getting my sister to read it too. and BAM just like me in the same part she got hooked and was bawling and we stayed up soooo late talking about it. :) TRUST ME hahah you will get hooked. asked anybody who has read it. it does take you by surprise :) you do feel the connection <333
  • MSCullen
I was the same way with the Host...I read the first chapter and was like what the heck is going on...tossed it away and went back to twilight...but after I read twilight for the sixth time I thought I try it again...and I have to tell you I fell in love with that book...I was crying too...I loved fact that Wonda and Ian got together they are the true meaning of true love...I am a all about Twilight but there is something about the Host that isn't there in Twilight...I am also with you on Team Ian! I hope that they make this book into a movie I think that it would be an awesome movie!
  • NuttyNetty
so far EVERYBODY i have talked to about that book feels EXACTLY the same way haha. It's my fave book :) I agree that there is something The Host has that Twilight doesn't have =] and WOO team Ian FTW lol we should start recruiting more members haha anyway i would go INSANE if they made into a move xD that would be cool :) it would be nice to see the Other Worlds too. oh oh! stephanie mentioned she may make sequels! aahh that would be awesome :D
  • marie_virtuoso
oh god no! i love the host but i dont think i want it to be a movie! like dont get me wrong, it would be pretty cool to see the story come to life on the big screen, especially one i love so much! its just that even though i like the twilight movie and im glad so many other people love it, the excess amount of fame it got kind of ruined it a bit. twilight is just everywhere now! the story felt so much more personal before the movie and the hype, and now its not as much. i dont want the same thing to happen wih the host. lol does that make any sense at all?
  • seeing I'm on bed rest for 2 weeks I should do something more useful than chat on this all day so maybe I'll give it another go...
  • NuttyNetty
yay :) you won't regret it ;) it's a good book =] just hang in there until the middle, and past that you will see what i'm talking about =] and i'm sorry to hear that you're on bed rest. Hope you get well soon! <33
  • marie_virtuoso
really? i LOVED the host! i actually think its equally as good as twilight!!(even thou im more obsessed with twilight=]) it completely griped me! i was really into it and i desperately hope theres a sequel!
  • Now that I have finished the host, I absolutley love it. But it took me about 100 pages to get completely hooked. Stick w/ it, it's worth it.
  • tweter76 . . . vamplover
I AGREE! My friend pestered me for a couple of months about reading Twilight! I didn't have much interest either. But once I started . . . I loved them. I can't get enough of them. I don't have interest in any other series . . .
  • muffinman
i agree , i was also a huge buffy fan and thought that it was to much a like.. but after reading the series i tottaly fell in love with it.. but buffy still rocks 8)
  • I know how you feel, it took months to start reading twilight. I would make fun of my friends and laugh at them for reading about vampires. But I was at my cousin's house, and I read the first chapter and was instantly hooked! Now, I'm the most obsessed fan out of all my friends and family. Twilight is just sooo good!
  • bells69
First I couldn`t imagine that any other "vampire" book would reach my attention, after Twilight-Saga. But than somehow the "Black Dagger" books fell into my hands. Cuz you cannot compare them to "Edward and Bella" they are one of a kind. But these books are quite good, full of love, romance and a little more adult.

So if you think you would like to read something new after reading all 4 books for the 25th time like me, maybe you would like those.
  • Amanda
If I here one word that Amelia Atwater-Rhodes books were "knock-offs" of the Twilight series, I just might bite someone's head off (no pun intended). Her books were written way before the Twilight saga, and it's safe to say that her ideas are original. Her vampire series is great, and "Demon In My View" was my favorite, and but oddly--the vampire in her books (Audrey) had the ability to read minds, and the only exception to this is the one he falls in love with, the other main character (Jessica). However, I'm not calling Twilight a knock-off (certainly not--the woman has grand, original ideas, and her vocabulary is flawless), but please--don't fall in love so much with the series that you have to snub all other books.
  • cnfac
yeah I Have been drawn to others. True Blood is a awesome show. I have read Vampire Diaries, The House of Night [LOVE HOUSE OF NIGHT!], Vampire Academy, and Blue Bloods. All of which I would love to hit the big screen. House of Night is already up there to become a movie. And for the person that read Marked and Hated it, If you havent [Not saying you have or havent] read the rest of the books, then you would never understand why its Young Adult. XD
  • MSCullen
I really like the Blue Bloods its one of my favorite books. I can't wait for October (that's when the next book comes out) I would really like to see this series turned into a movie too!
  • Lizzaaay
personally i think that the twilight saga is too big not to have knock offs even if those knock offs turn out crap they will still be there unfortunantly and also unfortunantly with no rob/edward to fantasize ova lol *day dreams* ;op tho we all no none will be as good as stephenie meyer and the movies and the romance created between bella and edward :o)
    Lizzie
  • WetDishRag (AKA deedee81)
House off night books are fantastic, bit more raunchier, just the way we like it! And the Morganville Series is also fantastic I read 4 off the books in 4 days!
  • JulieL
Yes, they (House of Night) are pretty good, but twi-moms beware: they have a lot of cuss words and sexual material. My daughter read the first 4 before I checked them out and I was in shock! The story is pretty good though, just make sure you read them before deciding whether your daughter is ready for them:)
  • Audrey
I agree, I liked the House of Night. I think the main character has a bit more personality than Bella, she's more assertive, less clingy and there are powerful feminist values. There is romance, but the main character doesn't fall apart when those romances don't go to plan. But the writing is atrocious. The grammar is terrible! I still read through the 5 books in less than 2 weeks. The story is great!
  • i love rob
Really?....I'm gonna have to start reading those! The problem is I can't stop reading any of the Twilight ones!!! I need help!!!
  • honey bee
I am starting to believe I may need help too. :x I first purchased the series in November and haven't been able to put the books down ever since. I am currently revamping New Moon for the third time. I haven't been able to read anything else. :x My stack of untouched books are starting to feel a bit jealous. :p
  • i love rob
I know....I have to read to something from these books everyday!!!! Not one friggin day will go by without me reading them!!!!

I've gotten much better....in the beginning, that's all I did while I was home!!!! I wouldnt do laundry or anything around the house!!! I was driving my poor hubby insane!! Luckily, he's been pretty patient with me!! But I am much better now.....usually I dont read til I'm ready to go to bed!

Now, my problem is being on this site!!!! I realized this morning, that I like coming to work......because I can spend my day on this site! LOL!!! At home, its much more difficult cause I get a lot more interruptions!!!!

NMM.org I love you!!!! Thanks for being the best Twilight/New Moon site out there!!!!!
  • abby0936
omg I'm the same way!!! I'm really happy that there are other crazies out there like me!
I first read the books over my spring break which was like March 7th. Well I read the books 3 times over that month. Then it got to the point where my grades were falling. A being a 4.0 student, I can't let my grades fall. So I promised myself that I wouldn't read Twilight again until school was out. But I didn't realize that it would be this hard! I'm seriously dying! Luckily this site has helped. But at the same time made it worse. Because now I'm obsessing about the movie! And I honestly can't wait until the movie comes out! I'll just be happy with an official trailer for now! I need something!! AHH!
  • i love rob
Crazies??? I think that's an understatement!!! But yes, you are not alone!!! Welcome to our world!!!! I felt the same way...I didn't realize how many others were in the same boat!!! Made me feel so much better!!!!

Keep your grades up!! (thats the mom in me talking!!)
  • abby0936
Well in my world (the college world) people think im crazy! The fact that I read a book more than once is crazy to them! haha. I'm sorry I'm not a partier and I'd rather sit at home and read a vampire love story! haha

And I'm trying. I should be working on my bonus work right now, but I'd rather talk on here! =D haha
  • honey bee
Now that is a GOOD hubby! :} I am dh-less, but I still get plenty of eye rolls here and there whenever Rob/Twilight is mentioned. Ugh. lol I pity the man I marry! :x

    The site is a real problem for me as well. I am constantly checking it throughout the day, while at work too! :X I joined a facebook group recently called: "I sit in strange positions to hide facebook from my coworkers". I swear, there NEEDS to be a NMM facebook group with the same name. Ahaha. ;}
  • abby0936
That is a good hubby! My boyfriend has been annoyed with it. But I made him read it so that he could understand a little. But now he's cute about it. When he sees me on my laptop, hes like "What are you doing? Twilight stuff?" and I just smile! haha

haha yeah i know what you mean! I don't work at a place with laptops but I hide my computer screen in class! It's nice to sit in the back of the class room sometimes! haha
  • i love rob
My hubbby won't read the books...but he did watch the movie! And he actually liked it....shocking!!!!

He thinks I'm a weirdo because I'm going to Twicon!!! But I dont care!!!!
  • i love rob
Facebook is blocked at my job.....but I do that with my NMM page! I make my window just big enough to read the posts and write my comments!!!! LOL!
  • Mimi
    Hi,

I thought I was the only obsessed person. I read the twilight saga in 10 days and I keep re-reading my favorite parts. I think I am psychotic..
  • i love rob
No....you're definitely not the only one!!!! We're all psychotic!!!!

    Welcome to the club!!! LOL!
  • oh no you're not alone. This is the Twilight support group...except instead of a programme to help us stop obsessing we are all about the obsessing and the filthy talk! lol
  • abby0936
    Yeah some support group!
You guys only encourage it! haha
  • FL95 (Team Unicorn)
I have my favorite parts sticky tabbed so I don't have to thumb through them every time I need a fix. :) You're not psychotic, just a little nutty... which is good for the heart. :)
  • WetDishRag (AKA deedee81)
I was exactly the same and I do still read them. I had ordered the 2House of Night" Books and the "Morganville" Series and they where sitting in my bookcase for weeks because I felt like a big traitor to the Twilight Saga for even having them.

I even thought I would compare them too much, but one night I picked them up and I loved them. As you know in the UK we are behind in novels so I had to order some from the American Amazon, I have been waiting weeks on them coming and I'm tearing my hair out, thats how much I love them.

But the Twilight saga will alway be number 1.

I actually liked the "Morganville" Series more than house off night!
  • i love rob
Well, maybe one day I'll be able to tear myself away!!! Maybe I'll get some of these other series for my vacation in June!!!!

OMG!!!! I'm gonna be without NMM.org for a whole week!!!! I think I'm hyperventilating!!!!! What am I going to do without you ladies?????
  • abby0936
You should just keep reading Twilight!
And take a laptop! Are you crazy?!!?!?! haha
Most places have free internet now!
  • i love rob
I know!!! But where we go.....they are condos that you rent out. So each unit is individually owned and unfortunately, the unit we have doesn't have internet!!! AHHHH!!!!!!

Freaking crazy....talk about withdrawls!!!! I'm gonna be a maniac....my poor family!!!!
  • tweter76 . . . vamplover
I have a friend who started House of Night series before Twilight. She loved them and then we got her sucked into the Twilight Saga. I may have to check them out too. I, like you, can't seem to tear myself away from Cullens and Wolves! GAH! The girls at work and I are on our 4th read through the series. I'm stalling on New Moon .. . it usually takes me a couple of weeks after Twilight before I start it.
  • i love rob
LOL!!! I read them randomly....in no particular order! But I just have to keep reading them (or parts of them).

    Such craziness!!!!
  • Holly
Vampire Academy is nothing like Twilight and it is very good.

I don't know about the others because I haven't read them.
  • star45
Just because it's a teen vampire movie doesn't make it a Twilight "knock off ".
House of Night and Vampire Academy's story has nothing similar to do with the Twilight series at all except for the fact that it's aimed at the youth. But when people see a trend they see a trend so why complain?
  • Audrey
I agree with you there, well said. Anne Rice is one of the best vampire story writers out there. They were huge when they came out. Meyer isn't the first one to cash in on vampires!
  • I agree! Interview with a Vampire was unreal!
  • Tichoux
I haven't read Den of Shadows or Vampire Academy yet but I did read the first book in the House of Crap...I mean House of Night series....barely. It was HORRIBLE NOTHING like Twilight and I wouldn't recommend it to my worse enemy. I spent most of the time trying to restrain myself from beating me in the head with it. HORRIBLE you can't even compare the two. The only thing they have have in common is that they are both teen vamp lit...that's it.
  • Personally, I don't choose a book to read in hopes that it's like Twilight. I doesn't even have to have vampires in it. I think I just like the whole immortal in love with a human aspect of the storyline.
  • Howie
We've just had a great series in the UK on BBC3 called "Being Human", modern day drama about a Vampire, Werewolf and Ghost living in the same house as flamates, well worth watching if it comes out on BBC Worldwide. Could have been spawned from the whole Twilight phenomenon but then again the whole proposal, writing scripts and getting something like this into production can take years
  • lilrister
Personally i ahve been reading supernatural books well before twilight particularly catering to vampires and dragons and werewolves but they were the adult romance novels any of you cougars out there that like supernatural I would definately suggest christine feehan (darks series), Katie Macalister they aren't in the same as twilight and they have been out for quite sometime before Stephenie But i have always lved their books definately worth the read if you like twilight but warning to they are definately ADULT Novels
  • v_m
Hi Thanks for the suggestion. I shall look them up. christine feehan (darks series), Katie Macalister......
  • lilrister
katie Mac is pretty easy to figure out what is see what is vampire and what is not i would suggest going to her website www.katiemacalister.com otherwise i would have to list them out and she has quite a few
  • lilrister
there is seven out right now that are vampire by katie and I have also read the aisling grey novels which are amazing and the there is also the 2 silver dragon novels out so far
  • v_m
Wow...Ok. I will save the name and the website...thanks again.
  • destined to be a cullen
personally, i think twilight is so unique - in just about everything.. so for me, no matter how many vampire-ish/vampire books come out later, the twilight saga would still be the best.. =)
  • Blacky94
    Agreed for 100%!
  • joanna86 aka Charlie's Angel
I adore Anne Rice (yeah I know she was BEFORE Twilight ;)). And Stephen King's "Salem's Lot". Haven't read a well written post-Twilight vampire story yet, but I'm still hoping I'll come across one one day :)
  • You know, I tries so hard to like Anna Rice's books however I'm afraid I found her a bit distant and unemoitional.

I did read a book a few years ago about a Vampire called Jules - "Big fat white vampire blues"
Really good, very funny and touching , it was the first time I had come across a vampire book set in modern times...can't remenber the author though...and have to go back to work - boss is looking at me quizzically (in the sense that he's tgiving me the look that says That -does- not- look- like- the- report -i- asked- for kind of way)
  • joanna86 aka Charlie's Angel
to me her distance fits well with the whole convention - I mean the vampire world in her books is just so... idk... solemn, dark & twisted? ;) It's strange though, that it's so much different from what the world in Stephenie's books looks like and still I'm attracted to both :)

hehe you can wink at your boss on my behalf ;)
  • I couldn't wink at him **heaven forbid** he might get the wrong idea!! LMAO.
Mind you I might get a raise!!
  • joanna86 aka Charlie's Angel
I say do it and we'll see what happens! :D (I'm betting on a raise ;))
  • Audrey
Anne Rice is my hero! She's amazing! I think I'll get beaten up if I say this but... she's a much better writer than Meyer. Don't take me wrong Twilight is great, but the grammar and structure cannot be compared to Anne Rice's work... Please don't beat me up! It's only my opinion! : )
  • joanna86 aka Charlie's Angel
hahaha no one's beating you up Audrey, you are entitled to have your own opinions ;)
  • i love rob
No worries Audrey!!! I don't think anyone wants to beat you up!!!

I agree....I don't think that Twilight was well written....but I think it's an incredible story!!!! I don't really care if it's well written or not. So, I am very grateful to Stephenie Meyer for giving us this beautiful story and these beautiful characters!!!
  • destined to be a cullen
definitely grateful to stephenie meyer, too! =)
  • joanna86 aka Charlie's Angel
    amen to that :)
  • honey bee
Salem's Lot?! Was that the movie where the vampire flies through the window in the middle of the night? *shudders*
  • joanna86 aka Charlie's Angel
didn't see the movie, but it sounds like it ;)

(the book scared the hale out of me, I still don't have a courage to watch the movie!)
  • lilrister
oh and also I think vampires have been around for along time going through stages of being popular then being (pardon my pun) RE-Vamped in a new way and become popular all over again I think they will always be there in some way shape or form and always have a certan appeal there is just something that draws people to them and the characters (there is something definately sexy about vampires)
  • Alyra
I think a couple of my friends are reading Marked or Vampire Academy or something. They love it, but I read some and it's SO boring. Darren Shan and Twilight are pretty much the only things to do with vampires that I've read. I'd much rather read something to do with real problems, dark humour... anything like that.

You can't blame authors for taking advantage of the current vampire craze, can you?
  • EstonianVampire
Nothing will beat Twilight. I actually don't like reading - and I LOVE reading the Twilight Saga. (And only that) I don't think most Twilight fans will be interested in other books/movies etc that have to do with vampires. It's the same as if you had another Harry Potter novel by another author. Twilight is unique!
  • I've tried reading those other "knock-offs" and they don't compare. They can try to have the success that Twilght has, but they won't. I don't see them as a threat. Whenever I see one of the series at a book store I laugh because they always have stupid names like Vampire Academy.
  • FL95 (Team Unicorn)
I've always liked supernatural type stories, and although Twilight just has something very special about it for me that it seems nothing else will ever touch, I did find another series that I found really good. I happened along it on Stephenie Meyer's website coincidentally. :) It's called "The Mortal Instruments" by Cassandra Clare... and it's not exactly a vampire series, but does have vampires in it... along with lots of other supernatural beings. ;) Very good read.
Started to read house of night, but didn't like it much, but I did kinda like the Vampire Academy books. And there's a more adult type read by Jim Butcher called The Dresden Files which I just started and like a lot too.
  • 30yearoldtwifan "Team Slade"
The Dresden files was actually on sci fi here in the states for 1 season, then they cancelled it :-( I loved it.
  • FL95 (Team Unicorn)
That's too bad I would have liked to see that one, I love his character.
  • I liked the Dresden files too...pity it was cancelled so quickly.
I also live Brimstone howver it was cancelled after just 1 series.
    **sobs**
  • lost in a dreamworld
I read the Mortal Instruments too and really enjoyed them....it took a little to get into the first book but I had to read them right away to find out what happens to Clary and Jace. They are well written and obviously well thought out. Lots of details. Aimed at 16-18yr olds but I'm WELL over that (double infact) and would recommend them.
  • FL95 (Team Unicorn)
Jace is hot... can I say that? :) I felt the same way. And I'm well over the age they were meant for also. ;)
  • JulieL
The Mortal Instruments series was very good, I actually really enjoyed the storyline. Stephenie even has a little snippet about the last book on her site I believe.
  • 30yearoldtwifan "Team Slade"
Ladies check this series out! You will not be disappointed. Its about a vampire Cain who falls in love with a human girl named Felicity, its similar to Twilight but for more mature readers, the Author is such a nice person, I have actually emailed her a few times and shes awesome. This is a read that I could not put down and ever since Twilight it was very hard to find anything that compares, but this one did, shes a new author so any support she would appreciate. Its called Almost Human its a 3 book series, shes working on a 4th right now.

  • Roxie
Yay! I'm glad you brought this up because, when I first heard about this series it was only on Kindle. Now that it's finally in paperback I'm getting the whole set. I've heard soooo many great reviews ( from friends with e-readers ) and was heart broken when I couldn't get my hands on it. Thanks so much.
  • 30yearoldtwifan "Team Slade"
Your welcome, Its so great, I feel in love with it and have been trying to tell people I know, Its hard to find series like Twilight and Almost Human. The book form just came out last month and its been doing very good.
  • dani
I read Amelia Atwater-Rhodes when I was still in high school (translation: 6+ years ago) and I'm not positive but I believe her first few novels came out before Twilight. I enjoyed her books then but haven't kept up on new stuff she's released, but I thought she was pretty good, considering that she wrote her first novel (that has vampires in it) at the age of 13. What she writes is nothing like Twilight.
I've also read the True Blood series (right after I read the Twilight Saga) and enjoyed them very much, despite the fact that those books are NOTHING like Twilight. I think the draw for me was that they are adult novels (ie some graphic sex with immortals), and the fantasy world is just so rich (werewolves and all sorts of other shape-shifters, witches, fairies...).
I wouldn't worry too much about knock-offs. No one can re-created Twilight.
  • v_m
Did you know that "True Blood" is in Foxtel here in Australia? I've seen it once. Like you said it is more of the adult theme. There are a lot more stories like that which make "Twilight" outshine others. Nothing can beat "true love", "first love", "Bella
    & Edward's love"....
  • v_m
OH this is a brilliant subject to discuss. I've found some new books and stories to see. Anyone seen the series call "Moonlight" -16 episodes. 4 dvd. From US I think. I found it in the DVD rental store in Australia. It is pretty good because I finished them in one long day...
  • FL95 (Team Unicorn)
Moonlight was good, I was bummed when they canceled that show.
  • v_m
    Canceled?!
Oh will. I will just have to wait and read before November...thanks for letting me know anyway.
  • MEGAN.
The Vampire Academy books are also really good. The only similarity be them in Twilight is the vampires, and even at that the vampires in VA are much different than in Twilight. I love both a lottt.
  • 30yearoldtwifan "Team Slade"
Yup I love Moonlight, that was also a series on TV they cancelled that one to, now Sci fi has the repeats on.
  • hartsafire
L.J. Smiths nightworld is another series that I've read..Its a collection on Ten books, but the 10th book is still yet to be published, its sorta along the same line as Twilight, but was published before Twilight. There have been tons of books written about our favorite mythological creature, whether they are YA, Teen, or Adult..Some are excellent choices for a good read some are not...but don't judge a book by whats came out before it or after it. Each author puts in a lot of work on their stories and each have a different take on how things should go in their own worlds. I am a huge Twilight saga fan, I've have read the saga atleast 10 times in the last month an a half alone, but do have to say that just because a book is not Twilight doesn't mean its a knock off and should be judged only after reading.
  • Roxie
I agree wholeheartedly with you and just not on L.J. but also about not judging a book with some similarities because it was written in the same time period when the genre is hot. I read L.J.'s "Vampire Diaries" as a teen ( a long time ago eep lol ) and the only 2 things that are similar to our beloved Twilight is the good and bad vampires, and vampire/ mortal love. I just recently re-read them all and her new one "The Return: Nightfall" and found it to be true to her first ones, not a knock off at all.
  • Krista
Well I read all Vampire books because I am a Vampire enthusiast. Some need to remember that alot of these books are being released (Vampire Diaries, Nightworld, Sookie Stackhouse Series) for a second time. Written long before Twilight. I love the Twilight Saga very much. But you can't say the other series aren't done well. I love the House of Night series and The Blue Bloods (which were written after Twilight) I have read everything from the Classics ( Dracula, Anne Rice, Laurel K Hamliton) to Newer things (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Vampire Kisses, Morganville Vampires) Remember when reading other Vampire lore to keep in mind that every story is unique and different in its own way.
  • v_m
Thanks Krista, what you wrote inspired me. I have to admit that I wasn't aware of that much about Vampire stories before....before Twilight.
  • ninarez
I am also a vampire enthusiast and enjoy reading all kinds of vampire fiction. The Twilight Saga is definitely up there on my list! However, having read many others, the Twilight story is hardly 'unique' to me... but the character Edward Cullen certainly is :) I have read many vampire romances and nothing even comes close to the way Stephenie Meyer presented Edward Cullen. I have to give her that, even though I 'personally' think that most of her ideas have already been done before.

Anne Rice. If you are interested in reading more into vampires, you should definitely give her a try. She is, after all, the mother of modern vampire fiction. The Vampire Lestat is one of my favorite books.

Sookie Stackhouse series is great; witty and fun. Vampire Kisses is sweet and light. Sunshine by Robin McKinley is good; kinda creepy. There are soooo many good vampire books out there! Dracula, Carmilla, Vampire Tapestry, The Historian....

For the younger readers, I would recommend the Evernight series by Claudia Gray.

Krista: What did you think of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series? OMG, I could not put those books down and would finish each book in one sitting! I definitely did not expect to like them as much as I did. Must be the mature content :D (Warning! Adult content!)

Right now I am happily reading Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Anyway, I love Twilight and I love most vampire fiction. I encourage everyone to read more and share their recommendations!
  • Krista
BDB IS HOTTTTTTT! What else can you say about it! LOL
  • 30yearoldtwifan "Team Slade"
Trust me ladies check out http://www.myspace.com/venomaddiction and you will be so addicted. Its really hard after Twilight for any books to compare. I read True Blood (I love the show) but I was disappointed in the books. Also Christoper Moore his are good, but nothing like Twilight.
  • Saga
From what I've read and seen I don't think that a lot of the Twilighters are generally interested in fantasy and paranormal books, since they dismiss every other series or book about vampires and fantasy with the thinking; "Twilight is the absolute best, and therefore I will not read or enjoy any other vampire story". They simply like Edward Cullen, but disses other vampire stories. Which is a shame, because you're missing out! And ofcourse other vamp series aren't like Twilight! But so they shouldn't be, either. Now I am a fan of Twilight, but I am also a fan of other vampire series (because I've always been interested in vamps, werewolves, magic etc.) and The House of Night series and Vampire Academy series are also two of my favorites. Love 'em! And HBO's True Blood is also amazing. The Vampire Diaries aren't bad either, but I did not like Amelia Atwater-Rhodes book at all.
  • ninarez
I have to agree with your observations. I think most people are looking for something just like Twilight.. or more so, the Edward Cullen effect. But ladies and gents, there is only one Edward Cullen, I'm sorry but you're just not going to find him in other books. Reading other vampire books would be a lot more fun if you're not looking for Edward there ;)

I've read the Sookie Stackhouse books before and loved them but I was a little hesitant to watch the HBO series (well actually, it's because I don't have HBO lol).. but I just recently stopped by HBO's website to check out the clips and I must say I am very interested! I didn't like Bill as much in the books, I liked Eric more... but from what I saw from the clips, I think I might like Bill more now..... hmm

Can't wait for New Moon to come out!!!!
  • RobCakes
I went searching for "the next Twilight" after I finished all four of the saga, because I felt like I had a Twilight shaped hole in my heart!
But all the other "vampire romance" novels I saw looked really lame and cheesy so I didn't bother.
Can anyone suggest a novel that is maybe a romance but doesn't necessarily have vampires?
  • lilrister
definately check out christine feehan's Dark series right now there are 19 books out in that series so it should keep you occupied for a while i bought them all they are awesome they are DARK but oh so sexy :-) if you like a lighter book thoguh try katie MacAlister she has seven vamp books out right now and they are all awesome too aso a recent book that just came out that i lived is called Blood Magic by jennifer lyon which was awesome too both katie and christine have websties where you can read excerpts to see if you like them alittle and I definately know hat you mean about cheesy i have run across quite a few really stupid ones myself but these ones above i don't think you can go wrong with they are very good definatly do not fall into the cheesy category lol
    www.christinefeehan.com
    www.katiemacalister.com
  • FL95 (Team Unicorn)
Definitely going to try out both of those! Thanks!
  • RobCakes
Thanks, I'm checking out the first chapter of Dark Prince by Christine Feehan now :)
  • FL95 (Team Unicorn)
OK, just read the first chapter of Dark Prince, yeah, have to go buy that one now. :) Thanks again for the suggestions!!!
  • sneff
You can read alot of these books online at wattpad.com. Some are hard to find but, a great website even to see what is out there before you buy.
  • lilrister
the only problem with that is (cause i just checked) you can't tell when they are using telepathy because in the official prints whether it is e-book or regular print the telepathy is always italicized i probably spelled that wrong lol but that is how you tell the difference in the way they are speaking so it can kinda get a little confusing both katie mac's books are like that and christine feehan's books are like that just a fore warning if you decide to read it like that
  • sneff
Yeah I didn't think about that, but good to know thanks.
  • alina28
If you like the Twilight saga, you'll LOVE the TV show MOONLIGHT which was unfortunately cancelled after one season by CBS. The storyline is great and has a terrific vampire/mortal love interest as well. The guy who plays the vampire (Alex O'Loughlin) is very sexy and a terrific actor. You can see all 16 episodes in re-runs on the sci-fi channel (the DVD set is out for sale as well). I saw one episode and was hooked -- had to watch the entire season during one weekend.
  • FL95 (Team Unicorn)
Yeah I don't know why they canceled that show, I loved it also. I guess people still compare everything to BtVS, Angel & Charmed.... but I'm still hoping they'll find one that stays for more than one season... I hate getting sucked in and then it disappears on me. :( The Vampire Diaries is supposed to pilot this fall, and it is going to star Ian Somerhalder as the "bad boy" Damon (love him). Hoping it does well... I'm not feelin' it for the dude they cast as Stephan... but we'll see.
  • RobCakes
Yeah i thought that show was great, they ran the whole series over here in the UK :)
  • I was looking through Borders and was kind of surprised to find a book that likes almost exactly like Twilight but with role reversed, and I think it was called Bloodlust or something along those lines. I haven't read it and don't plan to, but the cover threw me by how close it looked to the red/white/black colour scheme of the Twilight Saga. I've also read Vampire Academy, I personally thought it was a good plot but awfully written. Interview With a Vampire is extremely interesting, and I'd recommend that!
  • monkey
Those books were out before Twilight was even popular.
  • I'm kind of on a paranormal teen book binge right now. There are so many books out there that are as good if not better than the Twilight series. Don't get me wrong, Twilight is my crack and I love it dearly but I am loving reading this genre and have found some great stuff. Alyson Noel's Evermore is awesome. I also just finished the Vampire Diaries series by L.J. Smith which was written many moon before Twilight. Also, The Wicked Lovely series by Melissa Marr is awesome. It's about the Faerie world, though. Lots of great stuff out there. The House of Night series is next on my list as well as Vampire Academy.
  • Heather S
Ok, so here's my thing. I bought Marked (I believe is the first one) but after seeing an Interview with the mom/daughter team that wrote this series, I refuse to read it. They were extremely arrogent. The daughter even said the only reason she helped her mom was "Because who doesn't want to be famous?" Oh gag me. The Mom was just as bad. It was all rather disgusting and I wouldn't dare spend any of my hard earned money so they can be "famous" with attitudes like that.
  • Where is this interview? I want to see it.
  • Heather S
I saw it on RR which I DVR'd. Oh I found it on her site.

  • 30yearoldtwifan "Team Slade"
See I didn't like Vampire Academy, I couldn't get into it. I am pretty picky though when it comes to my vampire novels lol

Another good one (for adults) is Jeanine Frosts One foot on the grave series. Very sexy!
  • Abby
I love the Twilight Saga most of all, but I also read the House of Night series and fell in love. Before you comment saying that I'm a traitor or whatnot, let me explain. The House of Night series has nothing in common with the Twilight Saga except for the fact that there are vampires involved. It's a world where human know of the existence of vampires. Once you are Marked to be changed into a vampire, you must report to the House of Night, a boarding school for vampire fledglings. There's harsher language and more intense physical scenes than Twilight. It is worth the read. I started reading it as a filler between Twilight movies and it did the job well!
  • MSCullen
I just got done reading House of Night and I fell in love with it too. But I am still Team Edward! HA!
  • I have read Marked from the House of Night series, and one of the Den of Shadows series... Marked was good, Den Of Shadows is kinda boring...

Of course these books don't quite measure up to Twilight. Yes, they may have the same vampire theme, but th storyline is different. We can't expect every vampire book to be as captivating as Twilight, right?

I'm currently reading Death until Dark by Charlaine Harris, which the TV series 'True Blood' is based on.. it's OK, though..
  • 30yearoldtwifan "Team Slade"
yeah mell I didnt care for the true blood series, it was so fast changing and confusing. I love the TV show though.
  • Nat
Im reading Vampire Academy and it is NOTHING like Twilight at all. They are both so different. Yes both about Vampires but so very very very different and both unique in their own way.
  • Lulu
I have become very addicted to the Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris. These are the books that the HBO series True Blood is based on. And I LOVE the series. Season 2 starts in June. I also like the Blood Ties series. I wasn't too interested in the vampire genre until Twilight.
  • Lulu
I forgot to add-- You must read the Sookie Stackhouse novels IN ORDER, otherwise they won't make any sense. I'm on #4 at the present.
  • Cheryl
I'm reading the Vampire Diaries series right now, and it is very good. If you're looking for romance, then there's a great one on these books. I'd definitely recommend this series for the Twilight fans.
  • I have L.J Smith's Night World Series... I'm trying to read them... not a big fan of her writing. She writes very well, kind of into it... BUT I can honestly say I just had to get through Stephenie's books that very day I started to read it, I COULD NOT put it down!! So I finished all of them very quickly... I'm very slowly going through L.J Smith's books.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE ANNE RICE!!!!!
I must say, I never in a million years thought I would ever love any other "VAMPIRE" stories, I tried other books besides Rice... and NO ONE COULD EVEN BEGIN TO COMPARE TO ANNE RICE. BUT I was wrong. Stephenie Meyer is amazing. Despite the harshness of Steven King, [One of my top 3 favorite author's] she CAN write. And I really really enjoy her books. I re-read them as often as I re-read The Vampire Lestat, Queen of the Damned and IWTV.

    :)
  • YEAH! LULU!!!

i read the adult vampire novels. i've fixated on Buffy and read Laurell K. Hamilton's "Anita Blake" series before Twilight was even on my radar. then i read Charlaine Harris' "Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire" series and am an avid fan of the HBO show it garnered, "True Blood"... i think Charlaine Harris' books are far superior to Twilight's saga... IMO.

if you looking for a vampire fix after Twilight... read the Sookie Stackhouse series.
  • Gio
Shattered Mirror was written wayy before Twilight , so you know
  • Natalie MO
OK..I first want to say that i do love twlight. But since it was my frist book ever i have read, i went looking for others to read.. I just Finished two short stories Secret Life of a Vampire by Kerrelyn Sparks And Forrbidden Nights with a Vampire. These two are book 6 & 7 but im sure there short stories, Jack & Lara in bk 6 and
Phil (jacks friend & Vanda in bk 7, These 2 were great, i have to admit there better then twilight, There are so funny, and romantic *****WARNING THESE ARE ADULT BOOKS******* Then Sookie Stackhouse books I find are Better then Twilight too..Im sorry I don't know why but sometimes, Twilight kinda depresses me..These other books its a fight for love but its not so negative all the time..I guess.. The Vampire Diaries was really good too J L Smith.. I have noticed they all share a common intrest, there is one that someone just can't read there mind, and u know thats there LOVE.. But if ur an Adult I would suggest The Karrelyn Sparks, and for younger adults Vampire Diaries..
  • Mel
Yeah I am pretty much a hopeless romantic. I can't wait to see what stephanie meyers will write next. She is a very talented writer.
  • hberry
So I dunno if anyone else knows this, partly because I didn't read all of the comments but the den of shadows books by Ameila Atwater-Rhodes have been out for a long time. I have always been into vampire themed literature and I read those when I was in highschool (I am currently 24) I'm sure that since the release and success of Twilight these and other vampire novels have gotten a bit more success but this article amost makes them sound like they are copying Twilight which is not fair to the author and the coloration themes of the book cover probably was a marketing ploy thought up by the publishers. The original covers were much different and I actually prefer them.
  • Lisa Marie
L.J. Smith came out with her series of Vampire stories well before Stephenie Meyer did, just saying . . . my niece is reading the series now. A lot of her friends were saying they were a knock off of Twilight until my niece informed them that the books were written back in the 90s. If people are interested in different takes on Vampire stories L.J. Smith's The Vampire Diaries is a good choice . . . and Night World.

having read the twilight saga upteen times, i knew i had to find somthing else to read so i started reading Christine feehans 'dark series' and now i am addicted to that to, and i am now on my second read through the 19 books, the last one being Dark slayer (due out sept '09) which i can't wait for, to get the feel of the carpatian community you have to read the books in order. i am now a massive fan of christine feehan , must warn you very adult reading!
  • XOXO
i read the back of 'market' and it sounds C-R-A-P.
    :)
  • XOXO
*sorry it should say 'marked' damn you typos!!!
  • Melissa
I just read this freakishly similar book as twilight called "Evermore".

well at least when you read the back it totally screams twilight. like this line for example:

"as Ever is drawn deeper into his enticing world of secrets and mystery' shes left with more questions then answers. And she has no idea just who hes really is-or what he is. the only thing that she knows to be true is that she's falling deeply and helplessly in love with him"

The cover of the book is even more of a example of what it was inspired by. And the title of the next book in the series....BLUE MOON!!! its really weird actually.

on a final note, this book has enough differences in the actual story for me to fall in love with it. instead of vampires it is immortals. and there is a whole lot more going on with the main character, Ever, then just figuring this boy out.

give it a shot! you may just fall in love too!
  • mickey
omg i loveee that book!!!! xD its sooo much better than twilight!!
  • Mimi
Okay I just had to say this after reading all these comments... I am in love with the twilight saga and the whole supernatural love thing. I am going to read the dark series next. I am also a huge Harry Potter fan. With that said I don't think that it is fair to other authors to just say that no book will ever or could ever compare. Stephanie has several ideas that are not original even though the saga is uniqe in some ways as well. I love the saga... ( Hey I am blogging for crying out loud) however I think that her writing has some flaws. I found the story line incredible, could not put the books down .... still can't .However the structure and actual writing was not that great. I am an avid reader in general an found her writing style to be inferior. If anyone disagrees... hey its my opinion and again I do read a lot.
  • Kurstee
I have to disagree. The twilight saga was never the first vampire series on the market and shouldn't be the last. L J Smith's books are just as good and I started reading them about 5/6 years ago! I enjoyed the twilight saga very much, and it is hard to beat, but they definately won't be the last vampire books i read - I love the genre so why should I give up reading them? :/
  • I love the Twilight Saga but I am very interested in the House of Night Series. I said I would never read anything that had the same basic storyline. Only after reading Twilight three times did I stray. I love the HON series as much as Twilight and I also feel that there are more adult issues (even though it's about a teenager). I was tired of waiting for the possible release of Midnight Sun or The official Guide. I decided not to torture myself and began reading something else. It doesn't make you any less of a Twilight Fan if you do.
  • Lovin_the_Cullens_n_Bella
I like how you said reading something else doesn't make you any less of a Twilight fan.... :) I agree with you. When you know the Twilight books by the back of your hand, then you've gotta read something else. Lol. :) :) I have read every book from the House of Night Series and they are pretty good all of these came after Twilight... the same with the Vampire Academy series.... just like counting down the days til' New Moon hits theatres, I'm counting down the days til' the next books come out in both those series. I read them because the Vampires....I've always been interested in that era. :) If you read the other series, you'll have to let me know what you think.
  • sneff
I really loved twilight, but the vampire diaries are really good. LJ Smith is great. Charlaine Harris books also fun and good to read, not really a fan of the show. I guess cause I read the books first. There are deffinately alot of good books along the same lines alot came out before twilight. Also Mortal Instruments great story and love story. Check them out!
  • Lunatic Aardvark
Like S. Meyer yanked a bunch of ideas from Charlaine Harris? Hmmmm....
  • Jade
The House of Night series is completely different from the Twilight Books. I'm a huge fan of both series and I have read all of each series. I have to say that I disagree that House of Night is a "Twilight Knockoff." The HoN vampyres are completetely different from the Twilight vampires, and face different struggles than they do. House of Night is written completely differently from Twilight, and I don't appreciate the great series by P.C. and Kristin Cast being shoved under a sterotypical category.
  • ThatsSoAlex
    I Completley Agree With You!
It's Not Fair That People Just Think It Won't Be Any Good. =)
The HoN Series Is Really Good! Im On The Third Book At The Moment. They Are The Only Ones Out In England, The Others Aren't Out Yet.
But Yeah, I Absolutley Agree With What You Put! =)
  • tini
I have read a lot of vampire books before I read Twilight and I continued to read more of them. I read the House of Night series and I love these books just as much as I love Twilight. I can't get enough of them, so I am happy that there will be at least 9 books. I also read Vampire Academy, but only the first one. My friend just gave it back to me today. Both series are very different from Twilight, even when they both deal with vampires and are about teenagers. But that's all they have in common.
  • ThatsSoAlex
I'm Actually On The Third Book 'Chosen' Of The House Of Night Series At The Moment. The House Of Night Series Is Actually Really Good! When I First Heard I Just Thought That It Would Be Some Sort Of Twilght Copy Or Something. They Really Aren't, It's A Completeley Different Way Of Telling All About Vampires Or Vampryes As It Is Spelt.
Obviously Nothing Is Going To Live Up To 'Twilight' And The Other Books, They Still Hold The Biggest Place! But I Think That People Need To Give Other Books A Chance As Well.
  • Cawley_Cullen
I too have read all of the Twilght Series ( several times!) and have just finished the House of Night Series. Love them both, although Twilight saga is my favorite.

When are the rest of the HON books coming out??? What do I read in the meantime???
  • RobismySL_ TeamPatzz&Stewy
Hmm..Nothing is going to TOP Twilight..Im a Twilight girl, and its staying that way!! Sure I might read these books, and see these movies..But Im only remaining Loyal to the Twilgiht world, where I belong!! Lmao.. :) I mean, I still love all those vamp shows and movies, for instance Mooonlight, and The lost Boys...But nothing Tops Twilight!!!
  • Kristen
I have read the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris which is amazing and is now a show on HBO called True Blood. I have read the Vampire Academy series which is also awesome and completely different from Twilight even though they are both vampire books. I have read the House of Night series which is a little bit too teen-ish for me even though I am only 19. I have read the Vampire Diaries series which were written before Twilight but I don't think are as good. I have read the Night World series which are pretty good but a little repetitive. And lots more lol. After reading Twilight I have been on the hunt for books that meet its high standards and a couple do but most don't. I would recommend all of these to anyone who loves Twilight though.
  • StupidShinyVolvo Owner
i LOVE the Twilight series, it is my favorite out of ALL the books i have read.
    BUT... i also like
*The House of Night series by P.C. Cast and her daughter Kristen Cast, its different but it can get repetitive at times which kinda drives me nuts.

*Vampire Kisses series by Ellen Schreiber, i acually read this one before i found Twilight. Teen Romance, unpopular goth girl meets new guy that is the only other goth in town and could possibly be a vampire.

*Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead, it's VERY different from Twilight and any other vampire series i've read. Moroi are vampires and Dhampir are protectors of the Moroi (or guardians). But they have to protect the Moroi from Strigoi. Stigoi are evil. they once were Moroi or Dhampir. If they were Moroi they became Strigoi from drinking human blood and killing them. Dhampirs become Strigoi from being bitten and killed by a Strigoi. Overall a pretty good interesting series.

*Alex Duval's Vampire Beach series. interesting series but very hard to come by if you live in the US. its many the UK that has them.

those are my favorites on my list after Twilight and ones that i suggest to other vampire book lovers. =)
  • bkhinohio
I have read Twilight books several times. I can't seem to put them down. When I am finished and don't read them for a while.... I miss them. I then go back and read the entire saga again. I am on the fourth round now. I am trying to read The Host, but am finding it very difficult to grasp. I don't follow it as easy and nothing stands out in these first few chapters to get me so excited about opening it back up.

With Twilight I would feel like I couldn't wait to have a free minute to find out what was going to happen next. I read for six hours straight one day. You just don't find that very often - at least I don't. There is something very special about the Twilight series and I believe it will be thought of in the same respect as Romeo and Juliet.

I only hope that Stephenie continues the series. There are many areas she could touch on that have been left open. The romance between Edward and Bella is what keeps bringing me back, but it's the excellent writing and story that Stephenie will hopefully continue.
  • Sia
I've read those books and others and I'm sorry there not that good. There ok. The Sookie books, Marked, Vampire Diaries, Vampire Academy and others didn't touch me like Twilight did they had intricate stories and were well written it's just that I didn't fall in love with any of the characters and I DON'T THINK IT WILL EVER BE AS POPULAR AS THE TWILIGHT BOOKS ! Some of those books were written in first person and some weren't but I just couldn't fall in love with it but they were written well and some of you guys might like it.

I'M ALWAYS GOING TO ADORE AND LOVE THE TWILIGHT BOOKS !

haven't read any other vampire books, but have just finished reading The mortal instruments series- City of Bones, City of Ashes, and City of Glass and loved them just as much as the twilight series. Has anyone else read these?
  • Tiera
i haven't read them but those tiles alone sound cool.
  • Leanneduh
    HOUSE OF NIGHT♥!
to be fair i love houes of night!
its not as good as twilight saga but its close!
Vampire Beach is also okaaaay...i dont like the way its written tho, the book is written as if a narrator is telling the story not the person the book is based on, still good. :)
ive just done a bit of research as well and on IMDB.com theres an "Untitled House of Night Project" 2011 page which has GOT to be the book being made into a film :D! x
  • AmandaD
I loved the books by Amelia Altwater Rhodes and her series came out BEFORE TWILIGHT DID. I was annoyed with twilight at first because some of it reminded me of her books, to call her a knock-off is insulting. She wrote about a girl who meets a vampire in her school 5 years before twilight came out. The author was only 16 when her book was first published and thats quite amazing.
  • Leticia
I read all the House of Night books and they got me hooked, but there are SO MANY things about them that irritated me and that just didn't make any sense. It's one of those series that can really annoy me sometimes, but I can't seem to stop reading it. Either way, HoN is not nearly as good as Twilight.
  • Emma
Actually the house of night series isn't like twilight at all, i know as I read the books both the twilight saga and the house of night series.
The house of night is more being a vampyre is more a illness you get that normaly will affect teenagers, it focuses on the comfusion of being a teenager and not forbidden love.
Just because it's about vampyres doesn't mean that it is the same the house of night has been out for ages aswel, and would really recommend them if your looking for a book to read after a twilight saga.
don't get me wrong I am a huge fan of the twilight books and read them all in like a week and I am dying to see new moon in the cinema when it's released, and the twilight books are better but just as the both happen to be about vampires doesn't mean its a rip off of twilight.
  • Autumn SilverMoon
Amelia Atwater-Rhodes wrote her vampire novels YEARS before Stephanie Myer did. I remember reading them 10 years ago. I think its stupid that they mentioned her book like it came out recently.
  • Lori
I'll pretty much read anything that anyone gives me. I've loved vampire books since I was a little kid... that's why I picked up Twilight. But I never read anything like Twilight and I loved it.
My sister in law picked up the Vampire Academy series and I fell in love with it... not like I did Twilight but it's awesome. There's something about the connection with Rose and Lissa that draws me in... and Dimitri of course... he's no Edward but he pretty much rocks.
  • twilightus
    oopppsss
  • KINALuvzWolves
Are they really knock-offs or just part of a genre?
  • mickey
oh sure, they are completeely like twilight. heck no, they are just part of the same genre. the people ho wrote the article are just scared that twilight might get dethroned, which it should.
  • bluntnoise
I really do enjoy the Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) books. Of course, not as much as the Twilight series. But the books are very entertaining and light reads and the HBO series is one of my favorite shows!

I bought Marked to start that series, got a little bit into it and stopped and picked up Breaking Dawn again haha It's alright, but just...I dunno...ehh
  • twihard17
honestly....i havnt read any books besides the twilight series since i started them besides books assigned by my teachers....nothing really interests me or pops out at me =] lol
  • FremontVet
My co-workers have enjoyed passing around The Morganville Vampire books. There are currently 5 books with the 6th one due out June 2009. They are not Twilight, BUT are a good suck-you-in and read until late into the early morning hours.
  • Ashlee
I'm actually in the middle of the House of Night series.
I think it is good. There are some similarities to Twilight
    but it's still vastly different.

The Twilight saga will still be my favorite vampire books though.
  • Samara
I have read Marked & hated it. I cannot believe that it's for young adults. Seriously, can't someone create a book w/ o all the smut? Oh yeah, Steph Meyer did & so did JK Rowling :)
  • L.E
Haha that's funny people are worried about Twilight-knockoffs seeing that Twilight is VERY close to Anne Rices books The Vampire Cronicles. I don't know if you'r to brainwashed to noticed but characters used in Twilight are EXTREAMLY like the ones in her books, not to mention the fact that names (such as Laurent, Felix...) are taken from those books (from The Vampire Lestat for those who wanna check it) If you don't believe me check out the movie Interveiw with the Vampire and then tell me Carlisle (Peter F) dosen't resemble Lestat (Tom C) My advice; For you who really like vampires, read Anne Rice's books, they will blow your mind away. And they don't leave anything unanswered or rapped up in a bundle of love!
  • Kimoppi
I think a lot of this stuff is all marketing. As soon as I bought Twilight on Amazon.com, EVERY SINGLE recommendation was vampire related. I've purchased other books, but now their only recommendations are young adult vampire series. Some of them were around before The Twilight Saga... so it really could be more marketing than anything else.

I'd prefer to believe that authors out there aren't sitting around waiting to jump onto someone else's efforts. Maybe I just believe in artist integrity.
  • Twilight follows a very basic storyline that has been done time and time again. The way it was executed has been very appealing to a lot of people, but that doesn't make it very original. The use of grayscale on the covers with splashes of red isn't original at all either. Vampires aren't original, star-crossed lovers aren't original. Call me when one of the vampires in these books sparkles, then we'll talk about ripple effect.

I've always like supernatural storylines, especially vampire love stories.
  • sarclark
i am reading the house of night series now. it is TOTALLY different. i mean the vampyres (and yes thats how the author spells it) get chosen to be a vampyre. and they have a god named Nyx. its sooo different. and if you have seen my twitter, i am a house of night follower. the series is addicting (not as much as twilight) and really good. you all should read it!

i agree with amanda, the storylines of romantic with a twist is not an original stephenie meyer thing, many authors do that kind of stuff.
  • Twilight saga is the best thinng in the world that I don't think nothing can be compared to it or better
  • Ali
Honestly, will it spawn others, yes. Will they all be good, NO! But some will be, and they deserve credit for that. But for the record, Amelia Atwater-Rhodes was writing about vampires before Stephenie Meyer. I read her first, and I love both authors very much!
  • Evern
I think that others will bite of Twilight but the Den of Shadows series was around before Twilight was. Maybe it was repacked and redistributed but I've been Amelia Atwater-Rhodes fan for a long time and she has has good stuff.
  • bianx
i want jake/nessie's story, or leah's happily ever after. if stephenie could write those books, im sure i would be the first in line. i dont know, i just cant move on away from twilight. i tried to read other books, but most of it was boring and i wasn't captivated by the story.

BUT, i do love the host more than twilight. it's so complex and so more adult-oriented that i literally cried every time with wanda. it was such a good book and i always wished that stephenie would write the sequels. please steph, write more books! you never fail to captivate me in your characters' worlds.
  • Shari

"I haven't gotten beyond chapeter 17...just finding it too difficult to get into it. And twilight keeps calling out to me for a re-read...just finished new moon again for the 5th time last night and back on to Eclipse!"

ME TOO! I wanted to read New Moon again so it would be fresh in my mind. It's funny, New Moon was my least favorite of the series, but having read it again my feelings have changed about it. I love it!
  • EmmaMarieUK
i'm currently reading the house Of Night series, it is sooo totally differnt from the Twilight saga. I'm reading other books about vampires too. Only because i like books like it. Try other Vamp books there good.
  • cutesweetiezzz
I only have eyes for the Twilight Saga. I don't plan on reading any other vampire novels. I only need one theory of vampires, and that's Stephenie's version. I don't want other vampire novels to dilute my theory of vampires.
  • allyson
i was reading the den of shadows series by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes back in the 8th grade. i'm 20 years old now. the twilight series is definitely much better- more adult in most aspects. my copies of the books have totally different covers than the ones pictured above. so, i agree that they may have tried to market similarly to the twilight books. they're a much shorter read- but definitely worth it.
  • loverofbooks
Twilight opened up a whole new world for me. Since then, I've read a ton of books in this genre. The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Claire is a young adult series that is fun and clean and has some great twists in the story. The House of Night series by P. C. Cast is also a young adult series. It is funny and sarcastic and has the true voice of teens (I teach high school and am surrounded by them! In fact, a student brought it to me to read.) The Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris is an adult series that is awesome! Great reads and keep you completely enthralled with the characters (yes, this is the series that TrueBlood came from). Now, I'm reading the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton. It is definitely an adult series and it is deliciously sinful!

All of these series deal with the supernatural - vampires, shapeshifters, faries, demons, etc. What I love about all of these series is that the main character is a female that is strong and determined. She is not perfect. She has weaknesses and she makes mistakes, but she works through them and becomes stronger because of them. I'd definitely recommend any of these series
  • Jackie
I have to say I like Twilight but i LOVE House of Night it's a really good series. I am a very big fan! Vampire Academy is alright! It's like sexual but it's good! It really offends me that they say its "Twilight Knock-offs" Yes, it's about vampires but it is NOWHERE near Twilight!
  • isabella
I've lost interest in Twilight, maybe because of all of the rabid fangirls and stuff...
Anyway, what I wanted to say is that we shouldn't judge other books because of Twilight's popularity. It's like we're saying Twilight is a knock-off of Anne Rice's books.
I think House of Night is awesome and it doesn't have anything similar to Twilight. Okay, maybe vampires and you know...that kind of stuff but I mean, grow up a pair and stop saying: OMG TWILIGHT IS LYK THE BEST BOOK EVAHHHH because it's not. I'm not saying it's bad or anything because I LIKED IT, but it's not the biggest piece of literature out there. Neither is HoN or Vampire Academy, or Blue Bloods or all of those "modern" vampire books.
  • TheLionFellIn<3W/Ceci-ROBECI
Yea, I suck!!! I haven't read any other books beside my Twilight Saga and school stuff... lol... I can't seem to stop re-reading them over and over and over... lol... but some of these do seem really interesting.... this summer I'll give them a try or... LOL...
  • Woofie
I don't think the article here was implying insults to the "knock-offs" or whatever it is they were called. The fact remains, there is a certain thirst out there right now for "vampire" related stuff. Hence, you're going to see lots more vampire stories being marketed. Some will be new, because fellow authors may not be jumping on a bandwagon, but may be inspired by the thoughts. I overheard a book store worker the other day even saying this is now "the in thing" to write about. And of course, some will be older stories repackaged. I am sure the authors don't mind if they see a resurrection of their works. I also believe ideas kind of just sort of float out there and get in the mass concscience. Like different generations have popular names. It's just "out there" and not necessarily used as a copy-cat thing, but is undoubtedly inspired by the time.

Also, remember, there are only like seven basic stories in the world. Every book, story, and like are going to be copy-cats of some forms. All stories lack originality on some level. Every book has it's strong points and not so strong. So I am sure there is "mutual inspiration" shared with these genres one way or another. If nothing else, there is going to be cross-over appeal within the different fanbases. However, I don't think we need to get into another nasty debate over whether Twilight Saga is good as "X-Saga" or Stephenie knocking off some other author. Anne Rice was considered a "god" of vampires for a long time, I just got done reading her biography where she stated all her vampires were rather stupid and she never had an appeal for them. So I would guess to say her vampire days are done.

If a book in the long run touches you, it's done it's job. Stephenie, and the fellow authors who have penned different sagas, have all been successful in their own right. After all, you don't get all your books on the NY Times Best-seller list, sell all the copies you do and inspire movies, fanfictions and people all over the world from being a mere "copy-cat".
  • HeyVampireGirl
There's also this one REALLY obvious spin-off of the Twilight series. And it made me just downright angry.
It's called Suck it up i think. But i read the back and it was like... I stayed in her room with her and kissed her. I felt my other need over powering me. And her blood smelled so sweet... and crap like that i was like... Well EFF! Haha.
  • lotsofhope
I'm not too interested in other Vampire stuff. Well, okay, I did watch Buffy, but that was forever ago. But how can anyone possible live up to Edward now? ::sigh:: lol

My cousin wrote a book about Vampires and is self publishing it. I haven't even read that, and she's family! lol Hers is dark though and doesn't (as far as I know, I'm a horrible cousin!) have mortals. She absolutely hates Twilight too! It amuses me.
  • katie
I LOVE THE HOUSE OF NIGHT SERIES!!!

but i LLLLOOOOVVVVVVEEEEEEEE twilight with an INTENSE FIREY PASSION!!!
  • NTL
I love the Twilight Saga...and I'm 40...is that bad? LOL. I got hooked because a younger gal working in my office was always reading them and talking about them. I asked her one if the books are really that good, of course she yelled. So, that night I picked up a copy. She questioned me daily about far I was in the story, and what did I think about this and that. Before long, she clued me in on a few things I didn't know, and I did the same for her. Anyway, before I could finish the first one, she gave me New Moon. I purchased Eclipse, and then she gave me Breaking Dawn. This girl is a doll!

Anyway, first time posting, may not be doing this right...but I have an issue with one thing about the books. And its the author. How can I love and adore these books and not like the author at all? That has never happened to me. I've watched her interviews and read them. Read her entire site. And I don't like her. Maybe because she holds the one thing I want more than anything over my head. The Midnight Sun book, the awesome unfinished Edwards version of Twilight. I honestly love that partial read more than Twilight's Bella's view. Much more.

I think the way she acted was like a kid who got mad playing and took her toys and went home on this deal. And I must add, The Host - I'm not feelin' it. She needs to resume the Twilight novels. And please don't get me started on Breaking Dawn. LOL. Though I love every word written in Eclipse...BD left me shaking my head. But thats for another day. Just sharing some thoughts, thanks fans.

Welcome to insanity! And welcome to the Twi-cougar club!
  • NTL
Well, thank you, tweter76! Love the Twi-cougar club title!

I thought I might be accused of blasphemy with the author thought, but its been on my mind.
  • tweter76 . . . vamplover
Well, don't be angry at her too much....she actually has it done but her publishers are holding it.
  • NTL
Really?! She completed it!! Why hold it? Do you think she'll take his view a little further and maybe a series filling in the blanks? You know, kinda like a complimentary to the set published?
  • tweter76 . . . vamplover
I have a friend who is a writer (children's books) and she has heard from her publisher it is finished. It is Stephenie's publisher holding out. They are waiting for things to chill with the other books first...It makes no sense to me, but whatever.
  • NTL
I actually watched TruBlood. I liked it, but in a more adult way. I'm currently reading the Stackhouse series, and I like it alot, though I'm as southern as they come so it might be that I kinda relate to it.

The difference, in my opinion, between Twilight and Trublood, is romance. Twilight owns the romance avenue in comparison. Trublood is no-nonsense, to the point reading.

Twilight is definitely more whimsical and innocent love. And reading them takes me back to my first love, my days at school, being naive. It's a nice walk back in time.
  • I've always loved the supernatural and vampires have always been my favourite. my favourite tv shows are buffy and angel. i read twilight partly becasue of the romance and partly because of the supernatural theme. they've alwasy sucked me in (no pun inteneded) as soon as i'd finished the twilight saga i had to get another fix! >_< so i went out and bought the vampire academy series. its not as good as twilight (in my opinion) but its still really engrossing.
  • FANGSRSXY
i totally agree with that one guy about true blood!!!! i watch that show and its really amazing!!!! but twilight is really similar but im still a die hard twilight fan!!!!!!!!!! the house of night books are pretty cool if u just like to read cool interesting book, not as goos as twilight but def not bad!!!!! fun read!! vampires have always been one of my favorite mythical characters!!!!!!! vampire kick ass!!!!
  • cullenlover70
I loved the Twilight Saga and they will always hold a special place in my heart. I did start to read other vampire books and I just finished The Vampire Academy series. I thought they were amazing awesome books. I loved the interaction between Rose and Dimitri it really turned me on and I really felt for the couple at the end of the series and I cried. I did just start reading House of Night series Marked. I'm kind of finally getting into the book at first I was lost but I hope it gets better. I love books to make me fantasize about another world and vampires are truly sexual beings and so mysterious that is what I love about the supernatural world it so takes me away into another world. If any author or writer can do that then they got me as a faithful readers of any of their books. I check everything out because I do not want to miss something interesting or maybe I can learn something from reading it. That is my opinion....
  • Leah
I have read the Vampire Academy series and they are great books. They are quite different from Twilight and i will not read other vampire books that sound too much like Twilight. Rose and Dimitri have something different to what Edward and Bella do, and the story takes unexpected turns. That is what kept me reading them. But i will not compare Twilight to Vampire Academy because they are different. That is my Opinion. :)
  • Katie
I AGREE! I loved Vampire Academy. I can not wait until the next one!!!!!!
  • Bella
I've read them. No offence to anyone who likes them, but they were seriously crap. I bought it, regret my actions so much; I couldn't even finish reading the second chapter.

No I agree, I couldn't get into them myself. I guess we all have our own "taste" when it comes to vampires lol
  • to be fair, amelia atwater-rhodes' books were out when i was a freshman in high school and i graduated high school 6 years ago. so there's no way she's just following the hype of twilight.

I have read the Blue Blood series that one is good. But I also read The Vampire Academy and LOVED IT! i cant wait for the next one.

Just vampire books? Or all supernatural stuff? Because thats all i watch/read. The circle Trilogy by Nora Roberts is amazing, I love the Sookie Stackhouse novels (not so much the show), Ive read all of Amelia Atwater-Rhodes' books, I Love Blood and Chocolate (recommended for wolf fans) and once again hated the on-screen adaptation, The Key trilogy is fabulous, and I really like the Signs of Seven trilogy as well.

On-screen I loved the show Blood Ties and Angel, and I watch Supernatural (a show on the cw) every Thursday . My favorite movies are the Blade Trilogy and Queen of the D*mned.

Would Superheros be consideredpartof the superntural genre? If so I also love Smallville.

House of Night surprised me, totally new take on vampires...just like the sparkling vamps in Twilight-didn't see that coming.

I have always liked vampire novels and YA from the first day I discovered one of the originals, Bram Stoker's Dracula. I am a huge fan of YA (with exceptions) to me it tends to be more imaginative. It had been a long time since i had read my last book. -- here is that exception-- The last series I read, which I haven't finished but am looking for the copies to pick it back up, was Anne Rice's Mayfair Chronicals. Then my sister threw Twighlight in my lap and I ended up reading the entire series in a week. This of course fueled the dormate and very hungry beast within me that love's to consume whole books in a day, and so I proceeded to feed it. I read the entire Sookie Stackhouse Sieries (to date), House of Night (to date), and Blue Bloods (to date) all with in two weeks. The beast was hungry. I am waiting for the sequels of those series too post in the mean time I have found intrest in some other YA novels not based on vampires. Wonderous Strange which is based upon the Fae world and Fell which deals with a female wolf changling. I don't base things as knock offs just entertainment, if they stroke my beasts belly then its all good. As far as movie's go my favorite's are Bram Stokers Dracula the one with Gary Oldman and the Underworld Series, who in there right mind wouldn't love a chick in spandex kicking a#$!!

I like The Twilight Saga best!
  • Somebody
Amelia wrote the books before Stephanie.
  • Phishy-Chan
Um, wth???? The House of Night Series, though good, is ABSOLUTLEY not like twilight. Not even remotely close. Its a good series, but it doesnt seem to hold the same OCD (Obsessive Cullen Disorder :] ) I recommend it. But i like the Twilight saga better.
  • I LOVE THE HOUSE OF NIGHT SERIES!!!
It is nothing like Twilight. I have read1-4 so far.
  • mickey
wow, so just because a book has a black background it is automatically jacking the twilight saga covers???. that is such bullcrap. and,the house of night series doesn't have much romance like twilight, and its a lot more different than that. and, just because books are about vamps doesn't mean its jacking the crap that is twilight. people write about vamps ALL THE TIME. jeez.
  • I hate how "Twilighters" have vendettas against any other frickin book having to do with vampires. What the hell is wrong with you people? I mean, gosh, I know that Twilight is this huge fad right now and people only read it from much prodding of people who have actually READ things other than Twilight and I don't mean things forced upon you by school nor Green Eggs And Ham.

I wonder, did the person who made this post even read the books that they are suggesting to be "knock-offs"? How dare you. I have read all of the books that you have accused of being people who are jumping onto the Twilight band-wagon for a free pick-me-up, and they are not at all like Twilight.

For one, I didn't like Marked much but it had a hell of a lot better plotline than Twilight.

Richelle Mead (the writer of Vampire Academy, Frost Bite, Shadow Kiss, the Dark Swan series, and the Georgina Kincaid series) could write circles around Stephenie Meyer any millisecond of the day. Her stories are wonderful and ORIGINAL thank you very much. Stephenie Meyer's is just some crap about -ooh, lookie here, SPARKLY VAMPIRES, and hey let's throw in the Romeo and Juliet concept 'cause THAT'S always popular, with a touch of not dying at the end because she is SUCH the optimist. Y'know what? I liked the Twilight series. Really did. But this crap came back to bite me in the arse. I love fantasy, but Bella and Edward's romance is too out of the universe to me. There is no realism to it. At all. So quit getting off on how wondeful their relationship is when it's just the high of first love. Vampire-style.

And Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. Her books may be short, her writing style kind of amateur-ish (but definitely not as unskilled as Meyer's) but everything she writes is gold in a tiny package instead of some chick brooding and becoming hysterical hoping for her ex-boyfriend to comeback because that apparently sends the message of TRUE LOVE. Hey, let's all get psychopathic and hope our exes will take us back, no?

Thanks so much for ruling out the colors black and red. I'll make sure not to wear those colors so I don't get labeled as a Twilight knock-off 'cause that's bad and people 'round here tend to like things sunny.

    Have fun in your ignorance.
  • Jane
    I agree.....
These aren't Twilight Knock-offs because most of them came out BEFORE twilight...
Vampire Novels have been around forever so its not a surprise that the Twi-tards say that Twilight is the first and best..
Vampire Academy is probably one of the most amazing books ever!!!
  • mysse
I agree. while i really do love the twilight series, i was reading books by Amelia Atwater Rhodes and Christine Feehan long before Twilight ever came out, and to be honest if i hadnt read thier books first i probably would never had bought twilight until after the movie came out.
