Catherine Hardwicke Interview in Texas Monthly

in Catherine Hardwicke

200905040745.jpg Texas Monthly has a great interview with Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke. She notes that, oddly enough, Twilight wasn’t originally supposed to in the Young Adults section of the bookstore–

When Stephenie wrote the first book, she didn’t expect it to go into the Young Adults section. Someone else decided that’s where it should go. She and I joked that, yes, you’ve got Romeo and Juliet, the two young lovers, but it doesn’t mean no one else can appreciate the play. It started out with the teenagers, but then it expanded—you know, you have the Twilight moms and the Twilight grandmoms.

Read the rest of the interview at Texas Monthly.

[thanks, Rachael!]

Oh Catherine... I thank her from the bottom of my heart for the amazing cast she provided for us... especially ROB!! But I must admit she did so many wrong things in Twilight... it's okay though... I still love it!!!

Aww the TwiMoms and TwiGrannys... how sweet... I'm 21 and I still consider myself a teen.... LOL... well, not really but there's no age when it comes to romance... no way!!!
  • Elle
she is so milking this twilight fame.
catherine: i moved on from you after seeing the movie. i only watched it for rob and the other actors, not the movie itself, because frankly, you destroyed it.
please don't think that all the moolah that twilight has made is because of you. it's not.
majority of us are praising the twilight gods for keeping you out of the next movies.

and please, for those of you who think we hate her because she had little money to work with, don't think that's the reason. it was what she could have done with lines (specifically adding the words "i love you" would have been nice) and camera angles and that extremely annoying blue tint :/

sorry if i sound really harsh, but it's the truth (in my opinion, at least).
now i just want melissa rosenburg to get the boot as well. hopefully, chris has changed all of her errors in the new script.

i bet he has, because he's an experienced director who knows what he's doing.
    take notes, catherine.

    :P

i read the CH article and i applaud her efforts in taking the directorial rains and make Twilight the way she and SM envisioned...
i can appreciate the feminine vibe she brought to the film.....for example...taking every opportunity afforded her to treat us to quiet, lingering moments, giving us what we don't usually experience in movies......... a chance to think about what we are seeing and really taking in and feeling the emotion.
i could have lived without the annoying banter on the commentary between CH, rob and kristen.......that was disappointing and unfortunately diminished her credibility factor, in my mind :(
  • great interview :D
  • rukiafae
lets face it- the movie was awful. and the added scenes did NOTHING for the movie. They removed scenes that could have been a better addition to the character development. I am so glad I read the book before seeing the movie, because if I hadn't, I would not love the story!

Looking forward to New Moon. If CH was directing it, I doubt I would say that.
  • June
Oh, please... can we move on? Twilight is in the past so is Catherine. We'll wait for New Moon which I'm sure will be much, much better than what Catherine has done. Looking back, I don't feel Twilight is as good as the first time I saw it... I've watched the DVD like 12 times and beginning to feel the movie is not so good...
  • TeamGreyT-Shirt
It wasnt Catherine's fault people they had very little money and no time, she did want to film in actual Forks, and I understand the whole nomads situation if they had appeared just out of the blue in the baseball field, those non readers would be scratching their heads, alot of people who did not catch it on the big screen and saw it on dvd, have loved it. So Catherine did something right.

Now I just wished she had given us the Cullen's history.
  • suitejuju
Wow. She's great. I wish they'd hire her to do Eclipse.
  • Kassielovesthecullens
I was way disappointed with How Twilight Turned out......if you go a read the whole interview she tells you how she changed some other stuff to include all the "tree-top" scenes to make for a better romantic story of falling in love.......HA Yeah right....if anything this took away from scenes that would have made Bella and Edward ACTUALLY appear in love. I think we are going to see a MUCH better movie from Chris W. And I think Eclipse does get very Dark with the whole Newborns and Battle with Victoria so I think David will do a good job....just gotta wait and see. I only watch Twilight because it's all I have.....I loved the books and it's not like they are going to remake it because Catherin did a so-so job.
  • neev
catherine is a great woman, i really like her!
twilight movie could have been a bit better, maybe more true to the book, but overall it was great! nothing bad to say. she did amazing job with the cast!
    she's sweet.
    and nobody's perfect
what ever you do, there is always someone whining :D
  • lauraseclipse
wow i really admire her.... Yes ok Twilight wasn't exactly a great movie, but to know how low the budget was for a big ol film like this and to see her be able to pull it all off and create a good atmosphere on set... well that is great. She has really accomplished something being the first woman director to have her movie earn so much opening weekend... yes yes i know what you're all going to say ... it is just because it was twilight and not her... and you are probably right, but still... it is great to have it influence so many young women to feel they can accomplish something really BIG with their life. Awesome role model material i say...

I'm with you. Although the movie wasn't perfect, I saw it before reading the books and was hooked. There were definitely some things in the movie that I thought were out of place or even weird, but I loved the intimate feeling of the tight camera shots and the way I couldn't take my eyes off of Edward once he entered the scene - I give her credit for that. Every WOMAN that I saw it with (none of whom had read the books), left the theater saying things like, "I'm so turned on" (and that was by far the mildest comment I heard!). I'm really curious to see the difference in the way a male director will capture (or not) those feelings.
  • nowimaFelixgirl
Ops! Sorry, that was supposed to show up with the comment above.

What caught my attention to the books was the summary they displaye din the book club I joined then I found out it was a saga! When I was reading Twilight I noticed there was a movie, So I decided to go see the movie. By the time I went to see the movie I was already on Eclipse. Twilight was amovie that was givena low budget and Catherine did the best she could do with the money she had. I loved the movie. I'm sorry but for everyone complaining how porrly she did making the money, I know some of you went to see the movie 2 or more times. I give her credit for making Twilight one of the top 10 moives of 08!
  • LilyBelle
OMG I can't stand her, or her face. I kow mean right?....but I can't help it....it's something about her face, or her voice
  • sugar_3482
Thank you! Her commentary is the worst on the movie! I could listen to Kristen and Rob all day, but she drives me nuts! It's almost like Kristen and Rob will have a laugh about something, one of the scenes or whatever, and you can tell Catherine doesn't get it, but she laughs along anyways. I dunno, it's like you say, it's just SOMETHING about her.....
  • LilyBelle
yeah she totally pissed me off when Rob asked her a question and she was like...uuuhh I don't know. YOU friggin #$*&#$*&@#( OMG YOU DIRECTED THE MOVIE AND YOU DON'T KNOW! EVEN I KNOW!
I think it was the part when Bella was walking out of the bookstore in Port Angeles. Ugh! I'm so glad she's not doing the next one.
  • Jamie30
Ugh, cannot stand her... I think she made the Twilight movie horribly. But, I still watch it because of the books - But it is still a huge hott mess! LOL
  • Whitneee (aka CB's Angel) 3/09
haha yeah that's the only reason i watch it too (like most everyone else I'm sure)...the sad thing is that i KEEP watching it over and over and over, even though its really not a good movie and i laugh at the "serious" parts at this point.
  • Jamie30
I know what you mean, I seriously think she butchered the meadow scene. I cannot even sit through it anymore, I just fastforward or use that as an excuse for a bathroom break!! But, I watch it soo much as well. lol
  • Kimberlina Dirty Pirate Hooker
Gah where's the Rob news for today? Guess I'll have to go watch that kissing scene AGAIN...
  • i love rob
    Got another one.....and can I just say....YUMMY!

  • yuriinsane
omg i does not matter becuase twilight can have an unicrsal appeal becuase its about hope (for edward) and a forbidden love and sacrifice self sacrifice lol it might sounf corny but it is
  • rachaelwsz
    Second! Haha
  • twilightus
Good luck Catherine, hope David Slade doesn't ruin the saga for the movie you helped make a Mega Hit!
  • I don't think she made it into a mega hit!

The books were already big and I think the casting propelled the actors into the stardom they now have but the movie itself could have been so much better and I personally think she did a poor job directing and she didn't take advantage of how good the actors actually are.

Everyone went to see the movie because of the books, Rob etc not because of the excellent job she did. Chris will do an amazing job on new moon but there will still be people out there saying...oh he should have done this and he shouldn't have done that. The same goes for David on Eclipse - yes he's a bit of an out there director but give the guy a chance and let see what he does. Even if it is just slightly better than Twilight I'll think he'll have done a better job that Catherine.
  • rukiafae
    I agree totally!!!
  • twilightus
I think I said HELPED make, not made..... And give her a break --- not a whole lot you can do with such a low budget! Now Chris --- he's got a budget to work with!!!!! Yeah, there were things that could have been much better in the movie --- but budget does hurt when there isn't much of one to work with.
  • bookobsessed
Absolutely, They probably should have asked Rob to write the script and direct. He took the time to learn the books even MS. He would have done a better job. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed some of Katherine's "planet earth" shots but she goes off on her little tangents and forgets the big picture. Not a good quality for a director. If she had done a better job my significant may have understood why I like the books so much.....I have more hope in Chris.
  • Kim1524 (Fanfic Junkie)
I also have more faith in chris, but i have just 2 words of warning that won't leave my head and they are MELISSA ROSENBERG!!!!! LMAO
  • Kimberlina Dirty Pirate Hooker
rip her apart and burn the pieces...mauahahaha!
  • Kim1524 (Fanfic Junkie)
    LMAO!!!
  • i love rob
I agree.....I don't dig Melissa! I wish they hsd gone with a different screenwriter. But who knows....maybe it was all Catherine. Maybe Melissa wrote it so that it kept to the integrity of the book. It is what it is!!! I love the movie anyway (mainly because of the actors.....really, Rob!).

I have a lot of faith in Chris......and I understand there will be some changes (to make it visually appealing) and I accept that!!!

He*l, I figure, it can't be worse than Twilight!!! And this time, we got a lot more hot bodies to look at!!!!!
  • sugar_3482
I'm not a fan of Melissa either. I'm wondering about how well she wrote this script, but I guess we'll have to wait and see. I read on one of the boards here that Chris has already made her re-write some things, so I have a lot of faith in him keeping true to the book. Catherine was just a little too 'out there' for me and didn't stay on track very well. And speaking of the hot bodies, HELLO Daniel Cudmore! I think I may have to go over to the dark side to get me some of Felix! *drool* I bought the X-Men trilogy last night just so I could look at that hot body again!
  • bookobsessed
Keep the faith Kim. I believe a director trumps a writer while filming so lets be hopeful. I would like to think that Chris would slap her down if necessary to keep the integrity of the book............................At least this is the mantra I keep repeating in my head...........OK, she scares me toooo.
  • Kim1524 (Fanfic Junkie)
LMAO, i'd soooooo pay to see that slap go down LOL
  • OH god she butchered twilight, while I love it in a cheesy way, it was just wrong on so many levels
  • Whitneee (aka CB's Angel) 3/09
haha "butchered it"...agreed! i like her though...she seems cool and hippy and laid-back, but I think we are on the right track finally with chris.
  • twifan89
hahah Hippy, my sentiments exactly LOL, but some call me a hippy too hahaha. i definitely agree about chris being good for the job! it's so exciting....ahhh finals today, im so nervous i can hardly eat :/
  • Whitneee (aka CB's Angel) 3/09
hippy is a good thing!...good luck on your finals!!! i have a paper due by 6 pm tonight and once again i am glued to this site :)
  • twifan89
yep, i never take offense when people call me a hippy =). and thank you!! oh boy, you gotta get that paper done girl LOL. but i know you will ;-)! i've been on this site too much lol, im glued to it too!! haha
  • joanna86 aka Charlie's Angel
true! when I watched Twilight, I was simply happy that someone had decided to visualize the characters and action from the book. I didn't pay too much attention to how it was done... (I wouldn't be able to judge it objectively anyway). However, my friends (non-readers ;)) did and even thougn they said that the movie was good, they weren't totally enchanted by it and wouldn't say it was a "mega hit".
  • edward_addicted
I agree with you both on this!!
  • UKTwi-Hard
I agree with you I hope he doesn't and she made it a mega hit over in the UK to cos most of my friends are totally obsessed with it. LOL!
  • twilightus
    first! ha ha ha
