Report from 100 Monkeys in Philadelphia

200905260956.jpg The always-endearing LettersToTwilight has a great report from a Philly 100 Monkeys show, including reports of fan-made 100 Monkeys gear, Monkey Hats, stuffed monkeys….well’s let’s just say you’ve never read anything simian-ilar. The wrap-up of the long post ends on a note that sounds like the lesson of a hilarious after-school special, though–

So, real deal is…. I thought the band was awful. I truly think they are a bunch of friends from LA who are TALENTED musicians and love to get high. One day they were high and said. “I know.. let’s ride out Jackson’s fame and play some shows across the country.” So a bunch of talented kids who love to get high are riding around the country in a van, knowing they can sell out 6 nights in Philly, b/c they’re friend was a vampire in a movie. To me their sound was dated and not very creative. They play 3 chords and make up lyrics- and sweat… a lot…. but Jackson is hot.

  • Best review ever. It's OK to not praise everything associated with the Twilight nation. Especially if something is not worthy of praise. I congratulate the Letters To Twilight girls for having the courage to be what most Twilight sites are not...honest.

The LTT girls are not "jealous" because they rightly pronounced 100 Monkeys fame a product of Jackson Rathbone's celebrity. It's a frequently occurring phenomenon.

Sam Bradley? Bobby Long? Sage and the Dills? Anyone familiar with these artists a year ago? All of these musicians are enjoying a sudden fame due to their association with the Twilight cast. And no one said this is a bad thing.
  • no. I am jealous. duh
  • ya i agree :D
  • LWintz
I've only heard one of their songs.. wasn't that great. But I watched the video because of Jackson, which is exactly why they are getting so much attention. I agree with the review, im sure they are just high and having fun, which is great! I would have done the same thing!
  • Susie
Interesting. I have to admit - I was at some of the Philly concerts, and initially went because of Jackson, but I went back because the band was GOOD. Ben Graupner has an amazing vocal range as well as a fun loving stage presence. Ben J is a phenomenal drummer as well as having a great voice. Jared can play multiple instruments and provides a mellow back up to the vocals of the others. Jackson and 'Annabelle' can rival the rifts of some of the top guitarists out there, not to mention he too has a great vocal range.
You're right - it's okay not to like all things Twilight, but to berate Jared Anderson, Ben Johnson, and Ben Graupner as riding on the coat tails of Jackson is really unfair.
To each their own I guess - but I for one loved the 100 Monkeys, and it wasn't "just" because of Jackson. Jackson is just one part of what makes these 4 guys click together musically.
  • Anna
Jackson is hot? What an understatement. Jackson is SERIOUSLY BREATHTAKING! (Not like Edward but he sure got the vamp-ish hotness)
  • Mmmmmmmm Jackson, that smile.......**SWOONS**
  • looking good Jackson...and yea he is a breathtaker lol he is my number 2 in the hot vamps list :D
  • Rob and Jackson are BOTH effing HOT, FINE, BREATHTAKING, all of those things. But it's wierd because I love them both for completely different reasons. They are both amazing to look at, but in totally different ways. Can't put my finger on it though. I know what I would LIKE to put my fingers on, if you know what I mean.
  • Ok woah!!! I just saw 100 monkeys perform at eyecon in orlando. They kicked ass! They played for hours at the after show at ruby tuesdays and it was awesome! I really liked the music they were playing and I look forward to getting their CD. And yes Jackson is super georgous!

PS drugs have given us the best music ever. Look at Hendrix and Marley and pretty much every single rocker known to man.
  • CienMono
I'm really disappointed that NMM.org posted this.

I frequent this site daily, and I've never seen any negativity towards any cast members or such. And this is a VERY negative review and attack at Jackson and his band. And it bothers me that they would want to be a part of that.
  • Sarah
Not only an attack on the guys but their fans as well. It just sickens me this kind of attitude. Whatever happened to if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. People are entitled to their opinions but don't bash or put down other people for having theirs.
  • Tara
I agree!!! You can say that you dont like something but to sit there and say that the guys are constantly high is rediculous! These 4 guys are truely amazing musicians! For them to have the audience give them a topic to sing about then to come up wiht words and music is incredible. And not just ONE guy, but all 4! I am disgusted that NMM put this on the page, especially without the disclaimer that the opinions are not those shared by NNM.org.
I admit that if it werent for Jackson being in Twilight that I wouldn't have found out about the band. But that is not why I go to see them. I love all the guys. Jerad is funny as hell, and everytime I talk to Graupner I gain more and more respect for the man. I dont get to talk to Johnson as much as I would like. But even Jackson is funny and when you get to talking with him, he is just like anyone else there! He makes faces at my daughter when he is up on stage singing, he is a great guy. They all are and I would miss Jackson singing, but I wouldnt stay away from a show simply because he wasnt going to be there.
  • WoodenDance
I am a regular at their shows and that is one of the most insulting reviews I have ever read.Yeah people might not like their music but they are not there because of Jackson's fame. They hold on their own. I see them ALL the time WITHOUT Jackson. I've litterally only seen him play with them once, while Ive seen the boys play mutiples of other shows and they are AMAZING with or without him.

Okay I will admit their CD they have for sell kind of blows, but those songs on it have changed since that was recorded and are now some of their best songs. Like Wasteland 2. It's an AMAZING song when it's performed yet on the CD it's nothing like it is. If you want their real music you go to You Tube and their MySpace.

100 Monkeys is litterally one of those word of mouth bands. Yes they have gotten bigger since Twilight started but they hold on their own before Twilight.
  • youdontneedtoknow
I'm glad you posted this hun... its so stupid that people even think that they are "riding jacksons fame" 100 Monkeys are a fantastic band live, and they play more then three chords... obvously the person that posted the review is looking for a few seconds of fame themselfs. 3 of the 4 guys in the band are actors, and just cus people are obsessed with twilight doesnt mean all the 100 monkeys fans are. I have seen them 3 times personally WITH Jackson and I am going to see them again CUS I LOVE THE BAND! The guys are fun to watch and put on a great show.

so to the person that wrote that review and to all that think 100 Monkeys are riding jacksons fame... you are serously in denial. They were a band before twilight and will continue to be a BAND! They play shows without Jackson all time time as Woodendance said. SO take you heads out of your butts and realize that not everything revolves around twilight :D
  • Sarah
Yes it revolves around Senior Skip Day! lol kidding... did rent Jerad's movie too. I still want to go up to him and point my finger and say BAD Jerad. Although I did think he was adorable with the box of puppies in episode of Greek he did. =)
  • Sarah
LUCKY! I would just ABSOLUTELY LOVE to see the rest of them perform withOUT Jackson. But don't think that's going to happen close to where I live unfortunately. Some of my favorites are actually sung by the others.
  • WoodenDance
They are pretty a different band when he isnt with them. the sound is a cleaner and everything. It's amazing the difference. But I still love them either way.

Should try and head out to LA for a show one time or another down the line if you would like to see them without him. I know a friend of mine is trying to get down from Van. to see them play without him too.
I will warn you right now.. it's a totally different vibe when he isnt there. There is a bunch of us regulars for one that will get loud and dance (so if you see some chicks with huge photography lenses or double fisting drinkins... watch out and please make space because we need it and use it... between dancing and taking photos)
  • Sarah
Will definitely have to save up and try that sometime. It'd be nice to be able to enjoy the music without all the "fangirls" there screaming. Plus it be worth it to just shock the hell out of the others showing up in LA.
  • WoodenDance
well if you do make sure you go see Sandman to. they normally play with the monkeys too. they played eyecon with them actually but they do their own solo stuff. normally they play tuesday nights at 24k Lounge on Santa Monica Blv, West Hollywood.

I personally drive 4hrs from Vegas to see the boys play any time they are in the south west area. and I drive once a week there now to see Sandman play.(actually currently getting ready to head out to go there) and it's totally worth the drive. I did it 3 times in one week last month while I was still in school!
  • Sarah
That would be cool to see him too and Uncle Larry. Keep seeing them in the videos and it'd be nice to see them live too. A little jealous of the people who went to Eyecon although I want absolutely nothing to do with any of those conventions.

Wow that is a lot of driving and I thought I've driven a lot for shows. Wish I lived closer to California so it'd be easier to do that.
  • WoodenDance
    yeah they are amazing live.

lol it's worth it!! It's brought me a lot since I started doing it really. I love the people and the music!
This is actually sandman last week .. since i knwo you said you saw them in videos but a bit more how the shows really are when it's just them solo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlNZbHGmQXY
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y6wktDJpP8
  • Sarah
Ok that was just amazing!!! Thanks for sharing. Loved how you zoomed in and out in some of it.
  • WE LOVE YOU NMM!!!!! thanks for linking us... oh and we love jackon too and wish we could be in 100 monkeys

  • bean... I neeeeeeed iiiittt!
I love you guys! Letters To Twilight/Rob make me laugh so much - as did this review! :)

I can totally understand how people either love or hate 100 Monkeys' music (it's probably a bit like Marmite in the UK) and everyone's entitled to their opinion. I've never had the pleasure of seeing the band live but I've watched countless vids of their gigs on YouTube and, personally, love the randomness of it all!

You're soooo right about one thing though... Jackson is HAWT!! ;P
  • I don't care if his music is good or not...he looks like he is doing what he loves, and isn't that what life is all about? I luv him... and I would listen to Jackson read/sing the phone book. The end.
  • bean... I neeeeeeed iiiittt!
    Well said Mrs Rathbone! :D
  • Breazee
Bean.... *sobs slowly* you so need to be here. I have a chance to go see 100 Monkeys this weekend and my friends all suck! I don't have anyone to go with! :( *sobbing gets louder*
  • Breazee, are they playing in L.A this weekend? One of my friends and I are driving there from Phoenix and would love to check them out.
  • Breazee
No, Texas. His (Jackson's) sister has an opening and they are gonna be there. *sniffle* I love the whole idea. It's hard to find people to go places sometimes but even harder when it's an artsy type of thing.
  • What is his sister's opening for? I'm so intrigued. I love artsy stuff too, but most of my friends are pretty mainstream so I also have a hard time finding people to do those types of things with. Don't they sometimes play at the Twilight conventions? Maybe you can go to the one in Texas... I luckily found out my friend from work is secretly a Twilight OBSESSED fan, so now I have someone to go to events with, and we are going to the TWI convention in Phoenix in Aug. His name is on the list of actors that will be there, so fingers crossed that his band plays too. I def. wanna see him all sweaty. ; )
  • Breazee
It's a sculpture exibit. The people at the gallery are excited & I don't blame them, but I think they should keep any Twi-talk down. As much as I hate to say that. lol Yes, they are playing the TwiCon in Dallas as well. My daughter is interested in going, she esp likes the Ball idea. Just abit pricey for passes tho & I don't have friends cool enough to go there. lol
  • bean... I neeeeeeed iiiittt!
Noooooooooooooo!!!!!! Why am I stuck in this cold, wet country in the middle of frickin' nowhere?! (That's Ireland, for those that don't know - rainy as Forks but without the hot vampires).

Breazee, forget your friends - go on your own. The band might feel sorry for you & invite you to hang out with them! :D

If you get to meet Jackson, please tell him to come to Dublin. They call Ireland 'the land of a thousand welcomes' - well, I have a squillion welcomes waiting here for him! ;)
  • you must really need a jackson fix if you're logging on at work!!
  • bean... I neeeeeeed iiiittt!
I always need a Jackson fix, TSH! I'm getting to the stage where I need to be drip-fed...

But I'm posting via email - still can't risk having Twi-guy induced symptoms in the office! lol
  • Loving the new avatar!

Lol... I love that I can work from home at the moment else I would have palpitations waiting till I got home in the evening!
  • Breazee
I'm not much for doin' the loner thing. Besides with it being a family thing & one of the few dates some super obsessed Jackson/ Twi people can come to, I might be lucky to get through the door. lol
  • vamptramp
One of the most honest reviews I've read about 100 Monkeys. I frequent their shows and even I agree 100%. Love it!
  • stehfuhknee_hale
OMG he is so fine. I'd be his little sex kitten...meow! lol
  • camizzle222
I agree with the article, but if i had friends in a band I would want to promote them as well. the drug thing.....meh, I don't really care what they do on their spare time. As for them sucking, I agree, not the best music but I guess it goes with the saying "different strokes for different folks"
  • LovesJasper
I have to agree that the music is totally suspect. Not at all what I expected. I bought the 100 Monkeys CD and was sooo disapointed. Definitely mooching off the Jasper fame but....whatever. Gave it a shot....wasn't impressed. Now on the other hand, Rob Pattinson truly needs to mooch off the Edward fame because he really has a beautiful, soulful voice and shows great talent.
  • Breazee
True about Rob. However he has said he has had people offer but they all want him to do this and do that. It's not really on his own terms of his music & his way. I think if someone would allow that it would work cause oviously his stuff is good and he knows what he wants, he doesn't seem like someone who wants his music put out anyway but his own. It's gonna sale either way due to his hype, but even non- Twilighters, honest music fans would go for it I think.
  • I agree about Rob. I was a little late getting into the whole Twilight obsession. I had seen the books in the bookstore, but I always thought it was YA, so I didn't bother. But then I saw the preview for the movie and went and LOVED IT! During the ballet studio scene, I kept thinking, "wow, what a beautiful, tortured song." I had NO idea it was Rob singing until weeks later. I would definitely buy his music if he records and puts out a full length cd. I already downloaded all of his stuff off the internet that I could find. Now Jackson's music is a little "different" than what I usually like, but I still wanna check it out because it looks like a hell of a fun time (from the videos I have seen.)
  • Breazee
I actually got into the books first, which made me slightly disapointed in the movie, but it's grown on me. I was the same as you. I kept thinking that was such a beautifuly painful song and just literaly made the scene,
I wanted to know what it was. Then I found out it was Rob, I was impressed! I'm majorly eclectic in life, esp music. I think 100 Monkeys would be a fun.
  • venomandspice
i've heard jackson sing! he is really good! i would love to see him high though, how funny.!
  • Kings horses Kings men
I've seen him drunk, and that was freakin hilarious!!! he was drinking beer all night, then started shots after the show... shots and beer are ALWAYS a bad combo....
  • 0OoLeilanioO0
what one did you go to?
  • Kings horses Kings men
I went to the one on the 16th. it was at a strip club called studio... (no strippers though) at least that was what everyone was saying, that it was a strip club... it looked like one... it was amazing though.. and i guess they are going to be playing in NYC soon!! wooo! that's closer to me!!
  • venomandspice
i have done shots and beer before, and i got really sick!
  • LadyAvenger
I agree 100%. I've heard their music, really not impressed at all. They are riding Jacksons fame and I wouldn't blame them. More money, more money! :P

The review was harsh but true. Jackson is smokin hot I give you that! ^_^
  • I was also at the show. I had a really great time and I enjoyed the band and their music. Yes, Jackson has brought in the Twilight fans, no one can deny that, but I found the band as a whole put on a great show. We have our own review over at Cullen Boys Anonymous as well.
  • Nina ♡ The Twilight Saga
    cool. I`m first!

"but Jackson is hot.. " I agree!

  • w00t! 3rd i think...lol
  • KeepItLight
Someone is a little jealous of Jackson
  • samira
At least this person didn't outright bash him and his band. He/She did say that they were talented and that Jackson is hot. There are many styles of music because there are many different people, sometimes what one person likes doesn't appeal to someone else.
  • KeepItLight
yea but the person regardless of musical taste was upset the band was getting recognition because of Jackson's fame... and that is just jealousy!
  • Sandra
No, that's just some simple facts. His band IS getting recognition because of Twilight and Jackson, it's not jealousy, it's reality.
  • KeepItLight
I'm not disputing any of that but when someone writes a blog/letter/whatever and puts a negative twist on the story it is jealousy. Even if what they say is truth... i read it too and i thought it sounded like the person wasn't just stating fact. sorry if you don't agree
  • CienMono
    MUAH to you.
  • i am extremely jealous of jackson's fame.
  • KeepItLight
    heh nice ;)
  • a friend was concerned my sarcasm didn't come across. i was being sarcastic. friend, are you happy now? :)
  • KeepItLight
i got it, but i didn't feel the need to be nasty
  • oh so close... but still too far... :(
  • RobCakes
Argh I need to see these guys play very soon.
    Jackson is gorgeous!
    *le sigh*
  • 30yearoldtwifan "Team Slade"
Yeah I think this review was a bit harsh.

Any musician would take advantage of there popularity right now, he would be dumb not to. The music industry is not easy. I for one am looking forward to seeing them if there ever in Jersey.
  • wow this is amazing!
  • 30yearoldtwifan "Team Slade"
and whats this Getting HIGH comment about? People are really on that the past 2 days. KS now this?
  • 0OoLeilanioO0
Yep thats how its gunna be now...just everyone is high, all the time. Even if you get a pic taken mid-blink, your high. If you roll you cigs, ur high...if you play music with ur friends ur high too! I bet all these pll starting the rummors had never even taken one hit to know what "high" is.
  • actually it's when you can smell the pot wafting off them that you know they're high!
  • IHowl2 - The ONLY Samske Girl
I thought that only BEAN knew that Jackson sweated a lot!!!

    LOL!
  • Laura
I think that this "review" was anything but awesome and the best. I was shocked by it. How could anything be written about "being high?" I agree, it was very harsh. Sure, Jackson is from the Saga, riding it? I am not sure. I am sure that if they were, then would anyone attend any of the performances? Another site hailed it.
  • Kimoppi
I thought part of the whole 100 Monkeys shtick was that they were basically a jam band... was I wrong? Jam bands are notorious for getting drunk/high and just having fun with music. Sometimes they play songs with lyrics, and sometimes not so much.

What I've heard I like, but I think they'd be hilarious in person... so I'm on a quest to see them play.

And I don't see it as riding Jackson's fame. If the band existed BEFORE Twilight, then they are taking advantage of free publicity... there are much worse ways to gain free publicity than having a band mate in a movie.
  • CienMono
I think the review was harsh and unnecessary.

It's obvious that they attended the show solely to find fodder for their blog and to poke fun at fans. While that may be funny to you, some people do actually love this band and many people drove hundreds of miles for this show.

As far as having bags, or shirts.....they always say there's always one bad potato in the bag, if you know what I mean. Not everyone takes it to that level. We're not all Twilight moms, and we're not just there for Jackson. They were a band BEFORE Twilight, and they will continue on being a band after it's all said and done.

But by making comments about smoking pot, crediting their talents to Jackson's fame, and downplaying the successes they have achieved is just downright distasteful.

To each their own, I guess.
  • Sarah
I just love people who absolutely NO lives and sit around bashing other people and their likes. Shows how small and immature you are. Just because you don't like a band don't mean there aren't a ton of other people who truly love a band and that they aren't talented. And don't for one second think you can speak for a band and/or artist and say that they don't like homemade stuff. Bands and/or artists absolutely LOVE when fans make homemade stuff. It shows how dedicated you are to them and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. It might have been about Jackson in the beginning but it was NEVER about Twilight. Sorry but I prefer his other movies. When I go to see the 100 Monkeys I'm there for ALL of them... not just Jackson.
  • WoodenDance
Actually the boys have a P.O. Box so that fans can send stuff to them. and they take pictures when they get stuff even.
  • Sarah
Yes exactly! I knew that and didn't even think of putting that in what I said. *smacks forehead*
  • TheLionFellIn<3W/Ceci-ROBECI
LMAO... oh wow... those girls are BAD... but truly hilarious!!
It's all in good fun... they're not talking bad about Jackson so that's good... and yes, he most definitely is HOT and that little smile of his =]
  • Mande
we went to Philly to see the band and they are awesome...orginal music and really nice guys!!! and of course Jackson was super hot!! If you dont like the 100 Monkeys music just dont listen....We love it
  • Breazee
Well, that review may be abit in truth, but most of what they said wasn't anything that the band theirselves haven't said. Plus, honestly I think to each their own, some will be into it and some will not, it all depends on the person. My daughter said last night she thinks they sound abit rough, but at the same time altho I agree that sometimes they do, I also like some of the songs. So, *shrug* whatever.
  • cutesweetiezzz
Holy crap, Jackson does look really really sweaty in one of his pictures. Almost half of his shirt is drenched in sweat. I don't know why he doesn't just take his shirt off? He knows we'll like it. lol
  • Tara
That venue was so incredibly stuffy in there! Graupner brought out water for the crowd at each show. Not enough for everyone but for some that were standing there drenched with sweat. I know those guys were beat after those two shows!
  • bettingonalice
I admit that I went to a 100 Monkeys concert to see Jackson. However, they put on a really good show and I was very impressed with the band. I downloaded their music from itunes and I can't say I loved it. I think it's a bit too out there for my tastes. I do have tickets to another 100 Monkeys show. They are great performers, regardless if I like their style of music. See ya in Dallas on July 30th!
  • jaspers(dont F.. my avi) girl
Everybody has the wright of their own opinion, so do I, I love 100 monkeys, and even if i just hear of them because of Jackson and how im sooo obssesed with him, i find them a great band, never see them live because i live so damn far away from the states, but i've seen the vids, and just for your information, i preferer Ben G's songs, love his voice. And the comment about Jackson being gorgeus, well DUHHHH, but even so, he's also a great musician, as so the monkeys, and if they wouldnt use all this fame and recognition they'll be just playing dumb, theres no rational reason for not do it, just a bunch of girls feeling jelous because they dont know anybody who can help them to have they're own 15 min. of fame.
So, please keep it coming with more monkeys' gigs, and maybe, just maybe, the'll come here sometime soon.
  • jaspers(dont F.. my avi) girl
Sorry if this sounds a little too angry, or childish, but this post was bugging me since i read it this morning
  • Guesswho
I showed your letter to the band and they were so disheartened by your biting, scathing insightful commentary that they decided to disband. As they were packing up their insturments they asked me more about you and I told them you were a sad little creature who made a pathetic trip out to LA to take pictures with a minature Edward doll . Oh they said and unpacked and went off to write some more songs.
  • CienMono
    **snickers**

Did they also mention that if they are riding on the coat-tails of Jackson's fame, then the same applies to her?

Who in the hell would she be if not for Twilight? Blogging about her day at work?
  • Jackson IS hot ^^
  • TeamEdwardfosho
yeah the music isnt the best in the world but hey they do all improv..even the cd is completely all improv. so i guess thats pretty cool
  • Cassandra
I attended all three shows in Philly. I will admit that I only knew of the band because of Jackson but fell in love with them regardless of him. 100 Monkeys are incredible. I am convinced that Jackson should leave the band so I don't have to hear "Jackson I want to have your babies" all throughout the show. They are awesome and would still kick ass if Jackson left the band.
