The Changing Face of Forks Due to Twilight

The Peninsula Daily News takes an interesting look at the changing face of Forks from sleepy timber town to burgeoning tourist destination with the success of Twilight. The town recognizes all the fans visiting, and has started to offer advice just for the Twilight visitors–

Visitors can pick up a colorful map of the action sites in the book and go off on a self-guided tour, hoping to catch sight of the occasional vampire (on a cloudy day) or a werewolf (non-seasonal).
Their fantasy is fed by the Chamber of Commerce-run Visitor Information Center, where mail for the vampire Cullen family is being saved and where props for exciting photos are treasured and shared.
Directions to other activities and information on Olympic National Park, the former big draw, are offered as well.
Residents are showing a tolerant, slightly amused face to visitors and often recognize the plight of their photo-happy visitors and offer to snap a picture of a group of tourists.

If you're planning a trip to NZ, don't go to 'Hobbiton'! Nothing is left except the hills and lake but they charge you 50 bucks to go in!

Head to Deer Park Heights in Queenstown (most of Two Towers battle scenes were filmed here), the park in Wellington (where they filmed the 'Get of the road' scene) or the Tongariro Crossing (Mount Doom) and all those places are free to visit! :)

I heard the farmer that owns the land where the Shire was has tours of it. And I had read something awhile ago about a four-wheeler tour of some of the areas that had been filmed - and there's like a champagne lunch along with it.

Would *love* to do that. I absolutely loved those movies. Saw them probably close to 50 times.

I only read the books starting around when the movies came out.. read it, then saw the movie, and so on.

I live 4-6 hours away from Forks depending on how long the ferry takes. I took a road trip to forks for my sweet 16 in March. I was amazing and beautiful!!! The weather is very bipolar because in the one day we ran around and did stuff if sprinkled, poured, haled, and the sun came out. If anyone has questions about Forks I can answer them, well most of them.

NONE of Twilight was filmed in Forks. Cath wanted to film the WHOLE thing there in La Push and Forks itself but money reasons they just couldnt do it. But not a single shot was shot there at all.

according to the making of on the dvd the school wasn't the one in forks.. KS was saying she had to go to school at the school they were filming in cos of still being a minor.. they basically just copied all of the signs and everything from forks and did them in portland (i think that was where.. ) the making of is pretty good. but it's annoying cos the deleted scenes have stuff that should have been in there.. but there we go.

Yeah thats kinda what I was thinking, Altho they are flying everyone to Italy for that short little bit of a scene, then again.... it's easier to imatate an island then it is italy. I think if they can get a good tropical feel on one of islands off the California costline they may do so.

just think most of breaking dawn takes place at the cullen's house... so that will limit locations at least. I am so looking forward to the filming of eclipse to begin :-).. they've already been location scouting in the vancouver area again... It is a shame they couldn't use the locations from Twilight cause some of them were pretty sweet. It is a shame cause that would boost the local U.S. economy in those areas... bummer.

Forks is really a lame little town...no offense, it's great as a Twilight-experience but my "Great Forks Trip" turned into "Forks in Fifteen Minutes" because that's how long it takes to drive through and see everything. XD

Actually when I went to Forks we met this old couple in a burger place where they have the “Bella burger” and they said they love having people come through. They were very sweet. : )

Casizzle is right. I was talking to the school's secretary about it all and she said it's been amazing actually. Even the high school kids some what like it.

The Forks town people though have a total different way of dealing with it though then those in La Push for sure.

I will say being in those places though has given me a whole new respect for it all.

Being a Port Angeles native, I can say that our little (and really rather pathetic) neighbor, Forks, isnt the only town that has gone to the screaming fangirls. Dont get me wrong, I love Twilight too. But yeah, its pretty sad when you get messages from some girl in california, asking if you know any vampires.

On a little trivia note - the railway shots from Harry Potter (when you see the steam train going over bridges and stuff) are filmed not to far from me :) We go to that line to go on the steam train sometimes :) wooo

Forks is just the beginning...Olympic National Park and the entire Peninsula is BREATHTAKING.

Anyone venturing out for a Twilight trip will be pleasantly surprised by the wonderful sights and the friendly people :-D

I went for a friend's birthday party weekend... we did a twilight themed treasure hunt and sightseeing.... La Push was by far the best! it's "Laaa Puuush" what do you expect?... okay, so you'll go if i stop saying that right?

From the Puget Sound (Lynnwood area), Forks is only about 4-6 hours away, depending if you're driving like Edward or Bella. LOL! Oh- and don't forget about waiting for the ferry!! Ugh!
