Director Chris Weitz More Calm than Catherine Hardwicke

200906020812.jpg New Moon stars Michael Welch and Peter Facinelli, who play Mike Newtown and Peter Facinelli, both agree that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke is quite a bit different than New Moon director Chris Weitz. Michael Welch says that–

“We have a new director, Chris Weitz. (He) was amazing. It’s interesting because between him and Catherine, they’re so different. Catherine is somebody who can only function at a cluttered desk. She needs chaos to success. That’s wonderful. Chris is the exact opposite. Just couldn’t be more cool, clam and collected and had his stuff together. It’s the people at the top that affect everyone below them — so the energy was more calm.”

Peter Facinelli agrees, stating that–

Catherine (Hardwicke) is a ball of energy and infuses passions when she comes on the set. Chris is more laid back, insightful and thought provoking. It’s completely different. It’s like two different rollercoaster rides, but you still love the rides. They’re fantastic.”

I like Chris Weitz WAY better than Catherine Hardwicke. Catherine made Twilight all corny with her stupid lines. She thought they were going to be funny, but it was the completely opposite!

CW is going to kill new moon! (in a good way) you can just tell from the trailer. The Cullen house looks sooo different and better, Jaspers hair looks much better, kristen looks way prettier(if thats possible) and the actual film looks better also there skin doesn't look chalky like they did in twilight. im very pleased of what i have seen so far. and both movies rob looks amazing lol

how crazy does Laurent eyes look? lol
  • KP
They should just make midnight sun into a movie (stephanie HAS to finish that book, she would be craaazy not to) after they film breaking dawn. That could be our twilight failure replacement :)
  • I totally agree!
  • twifans217
has anyone asked if there is a possibility to remake the first movie with a different director (and bigger budget of course)? not that anyone hated it or disliked, but that it could be a million times better than what catherine produced. my own opinion of her is not that great.... i think someone should try it again and redo the first so that it is more like the second movie. and i'm sure the 3rd and 4th will be awesome!!
  • luvsedward84
I appreciate the movie because I LOVE the books but Twilight (the movie lacks the love connection that Bella and Edward had. The blood testing was one of my fav scenes too and when Edward first spends the night and she tells him how they can someday do the nasty and how she said I LOVE YOU the morning after.
  • TheLionFellIn<3W/Ceci-ROBECI
Ooooh I think the fans can also note the difference between these two!!! I LOVE Chris for what he did and is doing in NM... yay... he's really catering to us, the fans and making sure we're happy with the final product... woohoo... I'm excited!!
  • Sorry.... I meant New Moon.... not New Moore lol
  • I pretty much decided against seeing New Moore and any of the other movies made from the Twilight Saga solely because Twilight was a dismal failure. I'm very new to the Twilight bandwagon ( I read the books in Feb) and caught Twilight at a last showing theater and felt like I wasted my time and money. I hated how the romance was sucked away from the meadow scene,I missed the dialogue that reveals to us why Edward and Bella are right for each other, I missed the old-fashioned, other era-ness of Edward that rivals him with leading men like Darcy. And the make up and special effects kept reminding me I was watching a movie and not experiencing a story. But, from the trailer it looks like CW has been able to reign in the chaos that was Twilight. I'm excited to see it now. This is the first time I believed Robert Pattison as Edward he looks so beautiful in the goodbye scene in the woods- make-up totally perfect- pale but not chalky. I'm super excited!
  • ciera
I'm just confused on what you siad. Are you going to see the New Moon movie or not?
  • I'm going to see it...

" I'm excited to see it now. This is the first time I believed Robert Pattison as Edward he looks so beautiful in the goodbye scene in the woods- make-up totally perfect- pale but not chalky. I'm super excited!"
  • twifans217
you are so right! i agree with everything you said and i really think they should just redo the first one!!!!!
  • Rob_is_my_Kryptonite
I think it is obvious HOW different Catherine and Chris are. I think Chris will do a great job on New Moon. Can't wait till November!
  • TeamGreyT-Shirt
I remember the hissy fit, that some fans throw when CH was replaced, goodness gracious me, same thing when Rob was cast, was a difference. For onces CW has captured the romance. And at least with NM we didn't get to see it filmed, like TW, heck I remember seeing the Prom filmed, although I did like the switch from the gym to the gazeboo much more romantic. And I did like the trees, Edward and Bella looked so care free and happy, the baseball which was my least favorite in the book was my favorite in the movie.

I wonder how many people posting their hate on here are responsible for unfairly bumping up the movie's ratings on sites like Amazon, and for voting for Twilight in all the award categories even though they believe it didn't deserve it.

Also, almost everybody loved the movie when it first came out. I wonder if people can be honest and admit they have changed their minds in the last few months.

People are so funny. They all thought Robert Pattinson was ugly, and now they're convinced he's amazing. They were all convinced they loved the movie, and now they hate it.

Opinions don't seem to be very solid things. It so strange.
  • rainisingh
    Whoops - 'it's'.
  • RobCanHaveMyNeck
I think NM's gonna be great. I'm not gonna miss CH, shes just to much for me, and in my opinion CW*s doing great. CH wouldn't have been able to pull this movie off, but thats just me.

I did have doubts that a male director wouldn't been able to do a "girls-movie" but it seems to look good and I'm pleased with it. :)
  • Gee REALLY?!?! Those aren't the only differences between them. Chris knows what the fans want! Catherine did what SHE wanted. She turned things around and thought she was being so cute with her additions to Twilight.

Twilight belongs to Stephanie and all us TRUE fans NOT you CH.
  • Woland
Gotta say I find some of this conversation quite humourous. One almost gets the impression that Hardwicke single handedly wrote Twilight, edited it, directed it, built the sets for it, and photographed it.

Several posters make some important points, one of the most important that money matters. So does time. Anyway, anyone who makes a film as wonderful Thirteen gets my nod.

I don't know much about Weitz. Did any of the Golden Compass fan boys and girls moan about what he did to the book (this he/she butchered the book is a common and repetitive trait among fans by the way; check out what Austenatics say about the various adaptation of her works)? What I will say is that the Hollywood tendency to paint by special effects numbers is the reason I find Hollywood to one of the least interesting filmmaking colonies.

    Ta.
  • I second that!! And I'm clicking Like and bumping you to the top!
  • aww thanks! I just LOVE the point system!
  • I think it was nice of them to present both directors in that way. I'm sure it is very hard to answer questions both truthfully, while watching what you say. They handled the question very well.
  • christian
haha! ya that's what i was thinking. Mike Newtown??? i suggest getting all your facts straight b4 u write something....no offence, but there r alot of die hard twilight fans out there that get annoyed when ppl don't get names and other stuff straight.=)
  • ClareB
How many mistakes could there possibly be in one artical? Spell check much?
  • rainisingh
    It’s spelt ‘ARTICLE’.

Don’t criticise others unless you can spell yourself. (And yes, outside of the USA we spell with an S, rather than a Z [zed]).

What errors are you talking about?
  • ClareB
I spell criticise the same way as u thanks very much, since i'm not american. My bad though, I was rushing and i dont claim myself to be a journalist.

Where should i start? "New Moon stars Michael Welch and Peter Facinelli, who play Mike Newtown (should be Newton) and Peter Facinelli" (Dr Carlisle Cullen).

"cool, clam and collected" i do believe it's called "calm".

I like the way u see the mistakes in my comments but not in any of the "ARTICLE" above.
  • TeamGreyT-Shirt
I'm with Indie, I believe in freedom of speech and all but sometimes I feel bad for CH especially some things that have been said about her believe or not alot of non readers haved loved Twilight, almost all of my co-workers in the library love it and are looking foward to the sequel so in a way CH help Twilight expand. No book to movie is ever going to be the same but at least we should be thankful that our story is out there.

Lets see what David Slade can do.
  • I just really feel like she didn't do Twilight Justice and what she did can't be undone.I understand she was working under a smaller budget and there are some good parts of the movie (i.e baseball scene, fight scene) but overall I feel like she let us down.
  • LaurenLautner
Same here. I was very disappointed with her. I just wish Twilight as she made it could be erased and someone better suited for the job could remake it the way we all hoped it would be made the first time. Oh well. What's done is done. Let's hope Chris and David won't disappoint us!
  • cclore
CW's personality seems to be a better fit for New Moon. Witht the amount of heartbreak and emotions, I don't think Catherine could have pulled this movie off.

    Just my opinion.
  • I believe CH did the best she could with such a limited budget. Are there things I wish had been different in the movie? Of course! But she made the movie on basically an indie movie budget and it still managed to succeed. CW has the advantage of not being first in line and therefore having the bigger budget and more people willing to work with him because they want to cash in on the hurricane that is the Twilight Saga. I do think that he will also do his best to deliver the best movie he can, but like CH, he will give us his vision of what New Moon is. You can't make everyone happy all the time. You can't even make some of the people happy all the time when it comes to such a beloved set of books, but we know we want them to keep trying ;-) at least I do.
  • IndiesR
Of course CW will differ from Catherine...they both have different style. But while Twilight was not the best movie made (yeah I didnt like it at all when i watched it first), you have to give her some credit. She had so many issues, other than the very, very low budget that she had to deal with (unlike Chris) and she did it anyway when no one else would...I dont think Chris would have done NM (or any other director) if they had the budget Catherine had for Twilight and the limitations. Also, in the midst of all that, she was openly fun to work with (as they have said) and she always gave them the opportunity to express themselves, hence they had a good time....Twilight is already done, lets just move on to the others...just saying.
  • Oh I agree but what was with that blue tint throughout the whole movie...did she not have enough budget to leave it in colour!! Also the ever mentioned windchimes and spider monkey lines etc.

Yes I agree she had a much lower budget but I have seen low budget films that kick a$$. Twilight had a budget of $37 million where as Slumdog Millionaire budget of only $15 million, Four Wedding and Funeral $6 million, Juno budget of only$6.5 million.... I could dig out some more but what I am trying to show is she still had a bigger budget than some of these movies and in comparison she did an awful job. The low budget is just an excuse that she can use.
  • IndiesR
I'm not saying the movie wasnt crap. I'm saying give credit where credit is due....that's all.
  • well she gets no credit from me. I watch the movie because its based on the books I love but I still cringe when I watch it. And yes I voted for Twilight to win but again only because of my love of the books. As far as I am concerned she butchered Twilight, she could have made it much better but it goes to show that she didn't have strong directing experience to pull it off.
  • IndiesR
I stop cringing for a while now....Now, i just laugh at it. LOL
  • well after a few glasses of wine it always looks hell of lot better too! lol
  • RealMenGlitter
Infinite amounts of wine can not make this look any less painful...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khjX-C_eUd0

    *shudders*
  • That's hilarious. I clicked on the link and was expecting the monkey line, or the hospital scene, or they Waylon scene, or the ...but yeah, that body glitter is definitely lame. Please do better Chris, we know ya can!
  • RealMenGlitter
yea...it was difficult to decide which scene CH butchered to post

I refrained from posting more than one though...nmm.org is supposed to be my happy place lol
  • LMAO
  • IndiesR
    LOL....yeah, alcohol always helps out.
  • I agree she put twilight out with a limited budget, but there was so much in Twilight that shouldn't have been there and so much left out that shouldn't have been. But whats done is done, as much as I actually want to ring CH neck for some off the stupid things that where left out I still liked it, not loved but Liked.

With CW I ust think he is an awesome director, I love his past work, and also he seems to have stuck really close to the book, which pleases me, if when the film comes out and he hasn't then I'll hunt him down as he will go top off the list to get slapped round the gob with my Wet Dish Rag LMAO
  • IndiesR
LMAO! I hope CW knows that your wet dish rag is deadly! LOL
  • People give a lot of crap to Catherine, but I don't think they realized that she did the best she could given the low budget and other circumstances. We really should be thankful to her, because she really wanted the movie to follow the book to its best ability. If she wasn't the one to start that, the following movies could have been really different.
  • Agreed, Hardwicke brought a much needed feminine touch, creativity, sensuality and garnered input from the cast (especially Rob who contributed key lines to the script and ideas).

Catherine Hardwicke is a typical hippie dippie--sweet, soulful and creative...but not logical and decisive. She filmed so much that was not put in the movie THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. Key scenes were not included and deleted scenes (ie: the meadow "You don't know how it's tortured me" were not put in. She was not organized enough. However she did capture the teen angst element quite well.

She deserves some kudos for making a movie for 37 Million that grossed SO FAR 380 million worldwide. How about some respect..Summit, Peter, Mike and Chris. If you have not seen the deleted kissing scenes, forest scene, Biology bite from Edward etc....visit YouTube.
  • tlr
And don't forget - CW cast Rob and Kristen. We can all thank her for that!
  • Yes, casting them was the best thing that happened to the movie. Of course, us fans made them as popular as they are today. :)
  • tlr
    so true!
  • tlr
oops - I meant CH... Typo!
  • FL95 (JoJo)
Hmmmmm, well she definitely did not "grow" the love that Edward & Bella had for each other, that felt totally rushed.... how much money does that cost? ;)
  • True, true. So the movie could have been waaaaaay better, I was just trying to be nice. :)
  • LaurenLautner
    Ahaha!
My only question for Catherine: Why substitute stuff that was NOT in the book, for stuff that WAS? I don't get it. Like, the whole stupid thing with Waylon. Or whatever his name was. Couldn't they have replaced that stupid part with the blood-typing scene? That was my personal favorite in the book, and I was super disappointed that it wasn't in the movie.
She should have gone for what FANS wanted, not what SHE wanted.
  • I know, I love that scene myself. It would have been a nice scene to show how they started to get to know each other, and how he cared for her. Not jumping the gun, with Bella finding out he's a vamp, and then cue the meadow , "i love you" scene. For the Waylon scene, I guess I can see them having that, just so the movie carries a little more suspense throughout the movie.
  • FL95 (JoJo)
    LMAO!!!
  • the_nina
That's true. Catherine basically made it like a documentary. Small film, relatively unknown actors, and a story with an underground following. She was working with something that hadn't been created yet and she was better suited for that job.
Chris works well with computer animation and effects and with big budgets.
Both are perfect for what they're creating.
  • IndiesR
    I agree. :)
  • Don'tDrink&RunWithWoodenStakes
I don't think it's hard to be calmer than Catherine lol the woman is a storm. I like her though. I miss her enthusiasm....but I think Twilight isn't the best movie because of her chaos loving nature lol.
I like Chris also, he seems to be a cool guy and very professional.
  • Amanda
Edward'sLove --- I definitely agree with you. Maybe Mike can start learning from the good Dr. lol.

No offense to Mike, I'm sure he means all the respect in the world to both directors.
  • Amanda
I am definitely Loving what Chris has so far, what with the trailer and all.

I do love Cathrine because she has that fun side to her....and she set the bar for the movies.

Either way I'll probably just love every director, the movies are just getting better and better and only Cathrine can say she was the first director to give the series a shot to see if it would "fly."

just love this crazy awesome series.

    Yay for Stephenie!
  • Edward'sLove
You can tell that Peter has been in the business longer, he is more diplomatic when it comes to his comment.
  • rainisingh
LOL That's the first thing I thought!!

    But you know what?

Maybe because I finished high school in the Nineties, and so am totally a rock chick, I LOVED the feel of Twilight.

In a decade things have changed so much. For starters, these days rock music basically doesn't exist - and for the few decades before now it was EVERYTHING. So to tweens and teens today the guitar music and the 'grunginess' of the first movie probably seemed really weird. But for older viewers - and reviewers - that was the best part of what was otherwise a pretty cheesy movie (and I blame Stephenie Meyer for that more than anybody - it was her dialogue they used the reviewers called cheesy, though everybody wants to blame Melissa Rosenberg).

The New Moon trailer looked pretty good, but it certainly had a 'kids' movie' feel to it - especially the cutesy CGI wolf. I know most fans wanted a more generic movie feel to the Twilight films, but this is supposed to be about vampires, not fairies.
  • FL95 (JoJo)
I liked Twilight, a lot... I watch it often. I just didn't like some of the .... HORRIBLE choices Catherine made with the scenes.... she completely ruined the meadow scene for me, had things out of order, and left stuff out she didn't really need to leave out, while adding crap in that didn't need to be there and didn't do justice to the characters....
  • YAY! ....Hey speaking of Catherine.............does anyone know why she always seems to be hanging out with Billy Zane? (Titanic - Tales From The Crypt) I see them together all the time & he was sitting with her @ the MTV awards. Are they together?? Wow thats one odd couple if they are LOL
  • so excited to see what chris has done with new moon i already have a feeling it is gunna be alot better than twilight i am soooooo excited :D
  • Kassielovesthecullens
Somebody that wrote that article didn't pay attention to all the spelling errors and even made the mistake of saying Peter Facinelli was playing Peter Facinelli in the film. LOL
  • LaurenLautner
Haha. I thought that too when I read it. I was like, "Uh... If Peter played Peter, who played Carlisle?"
I don't think Chris is clam-like either. I think Michael meant calm. LOL.
  • Twisessed
Really exited about Chris directing New moon! :D He's done a great job so far! :)
  • Kassielovesthecullens
I agree. Even in the Trailer you can tell the special effects are so much better. The lighting is better. The vampires look more beautiful. It looks like he's capturing the emotional side of things better. I just love what I've seen so far.....
  • Kassielovesthecullens
I think they are very careful not to dis Catherine publicly...but I think they all agree with us.
  • FL95 (JoJo)
I agree, they don't want her to look too idiotic, after all, they did choose her as the director... Chris is a really cool dude, love what I've seen so far, can not FRIGGIN wait for November so we can see the rest!!!!
  • First?
  • congrats Team Perv!! You changed your name!! Very well suited and.... slightly jealous!
  • LOL ty ty
There's no need to be jealous...deep down inside, we're all on Team Perv......and it should say Edward AND Jacob ;-) hehe

    GOOOOOOOOOOO TEAM PERV!
