Interview with Eclipse Director David Slade

by Will on June 14, 2009 · Comments

in Eclipse

200906141200.jpg David Slade, who will be directing the sequel to New Moon, Eclipse, has a new interview with Fearnet. He says–

What will differ about Slade’s Twilight? “I don’t really know. We haven’t even started shooting yet.” While the director says he has a basic idea of what he wants to do with it, he is more concerned with telling a good story than being “different.” “It is darker, and there is a lot more action than the previous two,” he admits. “The third book is from Bella’s point of view, but the film will be more objective.” And just how will he do that? “We are going to focus on the origin stories of several characters, like Jasper, and show how Bella will decide between Edward and Jacob.”

Read the whole piece over at Fearnet.

[thanks, all!]

Twilightmoms.com is reporting that David Slade was misquoted in this interview in several specific and important words. The misquoted words change what he said to great extent.

Below is the correct version. The explanation of the words that were misquoted are explained at Twilightmoms.com. Check it out. It makes much more sense of what he is saying and what his intentions are.

Twilight: New Moon isn’t even in theatres yet, but we are already gearing up for the third film, Twilight: Eclipse. We crashed a David Slade signing at Dark Delicacies in Burbank, California, where he was signing a new line of toys based on 30 Days of Night. “One of the cool things about shooting a movie based on a book is that it is not a film the studio can really change,” he tells us. “Not that the studio would want to change anything, of course.” David promises that they will stick close to the book – there is no sense in changing the story at all.' Hit the jump for more.

David didn’t read the books until the studio was interested in bringing him in – then he did his homework. “It was tough for a middle-aged man to get into,” he admits, “from the point of view of a 17 year old girl. But once I got past that, I found them to be really good stories.” He is especially excited about the great script from Dexter writer/producer Melissa Rosenberg. Right now, they are still in preproduction, with plans to start shooting later in the year.

When asked about his list of genre credits (including 30 Days of Night, Hard Candy, and mind-bending music videos for bands such as Aphex Twin, Stone Temple Pilots, and System of a Down), Slade admits to being a genre fan. “How many other chances do you get to create your own world from scratch?” He also tells us: “When I first got cable, I watched FEARnet constantly. I really loved Midnight Meat Train. I wanted to direct it – the studio sent me the script – but in the end I was a little too late.” While nothing post-Eclipse is written in blood, he is looking at a few other projects, all in the horror/fantasty/sci-fi genre.

i saw 30 nights and i thought it was an ok flim not like a must see movie but whatever he better be good for this movie cause i love Eclipse
i keep hearing they will return chris for breaking dawn *keeping fingers crossed*
  • abigailjune---->TEAM LEG HITCH
I'm worried just as much as the rest of every other person here.... but i think at this point we fans need to take a breather and let the man do what the man has planned and then we can start complaining once pics form the set start to roll in and many other things. I mean we can all count on Melissa Rosenburg to write an amazing script like she has for the first two and i am hoping, praying and wishing she carries that thru.... as for David Slade: Stephenie won't let anything she doesn't approve of go on the big screen. if she sees something wrong it will be corrected. Who knows... maybe Eclipse will be Slade's big break in the directing business?!?!
  • TeamEdward6
Regarding the comment from Greta, Im also a bit worried as to the basis of the storyline he may portray, but i think that the actors i.e Rob and Kristin will express their views as well as to direction :s

    Heres hoping though

    x
  • TeamEdward6
I think that Eclipse has alot of little moments that make up the whole film i.e. when Edward goes away to hunt and leaves Bella a little note is sooo cute, just shows how much he does love her and how he never wants them to be apart.

I also hope that the director will film, when Bella and Edward go to see her Mom and when Bella and Edward have the confrontation with Jacob at Forks High :D

Cant wait :D Best one possibly Breaking Dawn for book to film ??? I think so x
  • Greta
I'm one of the 30+ who loves the saga, yes Eclispe is my favorite, and yes I am REALLY worried with the whole tone of David Slade's interview. I know we shouldn't judge so early, but he's making it difficult not to do so. I hope he's not one of those people who try to do everything opposite of what it's suppose to be, just to be contraversial and then say it's his artistic right as a director. The story of Twilight is awesome the way it is, it was so refreshing to find an addictive storyline that wasn't full of bad words, graphic sex and violence. It lets the readers use their imaginations, maybe we do all have a different picture in our heads of what is written, but we don't try to fix what isn't broken either.
  • I hope that he can do a good job in this. I really want him to do flashbacks and details about Jasper and Rose's stories, cause I love those. I want to see Rose murder Royce King lol. And the whole "I felt hope" scene in Jazz's story.
  • Elexis
This article makes me a little upset.....how in the world is he gonna make this more about developing jacob and other chararcters when its mostly about the relationship between edward and bella. Jacob's story was told in New Moon. The only people he should really focus on besides them is jasper and rosalie because thats in the book.
  • Mr_Cullen
Hope that Slade dont Trash my favorite book from the series.
  • Brittany
I just hope he keeps his word about staying by the book. Who cares if it ends up being a 3 hour movie! (I hope its longer!)
  • Ya know, I'm just gunna say it. I'm totally behind Mr. Slade here.

I think we are being WAY to critical of him. He only said that the film would be more objective. To me, that means he's going to focus some more attention on the backstory of the characters than Twilight did. The was one of my main gripes with Twilight. I really wanted to see more about the other characters than just Bella, Bella, Bella. He didn't say that it WASN'T going to be from Bella's perspectives but some other characters are going to get their chance to shine as well.

Also, with the 15 year old's comment, I'm not really that upset. Most of the media likes to portray Twilight as this teen sensation. Before he even read the books or saw the film he probably DID think it was just for teens, but once he read the story, I'm sure he realized why it was so successful and why people of all ages like it.

I honestly just think we are trying to find the worst in everything he says. Give the guy a shot. I'm pretty sure if he DID try and change anything, he'd have actors, executives, SM, and every one of the fans to deal with. I don't think he wants that. :D
  • kimbo.
i really dont like this guy. they need to keep chris. i think he is amazing and i love his work on new moon (judging from the trailer). i know it may be to early to judge, but so far I DONT LIKE HIM AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Twilight5925
I don't know but i really don't trust this guy. Catherine and CHRIS (the best so far) at least made us sound hopeful about them. But Slade really sounds he sucks bad. I don't know but i don't trust him. Not until i see some proof.
  • TE101(9/11_A_Day_Of_Infamy)
yeah, me too. i dont know if i like him as a director for one of the most popular books in the world
  • Katie87
we haven't even seen New Moon, I cant make any opinions about this until i have seen New Moon.
  • TheLionFellIn<3W/Ceci-ROBECI
I've stated before that I would hold out on doubting what he can do for Eclipse and I want to keep saying that for my own good because if I dont, I know I will completely lose it and start freaking out!! *Sighs* I'm really, REALLY crossing my fingers and continue giving him the benefit of the doubt 'till we actually see something for the movie... I'm just a tad bit FRIGHTENED by what he said on Eclipse being DARKER!?! OME, NO... it's not darker! There's more action and Bella's and Edward's relationship grows and becomes a bit more SERIOUS if ya know what I mean? I'll refrain from freaking out... I just hope he doesn't screw this up... I LOVE Eclipse and I'm hoping that the Queen Bee will be there to make sure it all goes well *crosses fingers*
  • phillygirl19119
i'm at a loss as to what David is talking about. Someone clue me in. How can he not make the movie from Bella's point of view when Eclipse is all about Bella - the conflict of emotions between Jacob and Edward, the newborn issue, Victoria chasing her and the major story of her relationship development between her and Edward which leads to marraige and him agreeing to change her. OMG, what is he talking about a 15 year old perspective. First of all, David needs to understand the Twilight fan base and stop reading gossip magazines. Twilighters are mature woman as well as teenagers. Catherine and Chris along with Stephanie really need to sit him down and give him a clue. What is he talking about developing Jacob's background. Huh? That's already done in New Moon. Jaspers background is important to understand how to fight the new borns and Rosalie's background gives us insight to why she is the way she is which also leads to how her and Bella develope a relationship in New Moon. People need to understand why Bella would call Rosalie for help and we know why in Eclipse. I'm scared that David is going to make this into a bloody horror film and miss the mark on Edward's and Bella's relationship with Jacob included. Does he get it? Does he understand? To say that he's not going to do the story from Bella's POV is ludicris. Who's point of view? I'm trying to keep an open mind, but unlike Chris, this guy keeps opening his mouth and inserting his foot. The only saving grace is having the same screen writer in Melissa, Stephanie's overseeing hand and the fact that he did say that he's going to follow the book for whatever that means since he said he's not doing the story from Bella's POV...contradicting....yes. Scared, yes...will give the guy a chance...ok. It's Summit's dice to throw, I hope that they know what their doing with this guy. You guys have got to keep us informed of the filming process. I hope David knows that we will be watching closely.
  • iloverob
TOTALLY agree. I don't know where he gets developing Jacob more? Jacob had New Moon for his introduction? Although Eclipse has so many points that have to be covered he needs to make sure:
Rosalie gets her talk with Bella.
    Jasper gets his talk.
i don't really care-- about developing jacob's background. We need Rosalie and Jaspers backgrounds. It's there time in Eclipse- not Jacob?
  • 30yearoldtwifan
Philygirl that was an excellent post. Mature and I can respect that, and your fears.

Just an FYI to other people who post, theres a way to say something without yelling and still getting the point across JMO...
  • EdwardsLullaby
isn't this the guy who said something mean about twigliht, then quickly apologized because we all got pissed? talk about a good start -_-

AND btw, eclipse is NOT darker!! if anything its FUNNIER. i was rolling throughout the entire book!

i'm afraid this guy is going to be the male hardwicke.
  • phillygirl19119
I sooo agree with you. You hit the nail on the head. This is why I love Eclipse. I laughed so hard with Jacob's boldness going after Bella. It is hilarious. Him forcing a kiss on her and then his absolute swagger in front of her father and not caring what threats Edward was saying to him. OMG!! David is turning a superior love story into some bloody horror flick. Jacob's background is a part but not major. All he has to introduce is the 3rd wife story so people can understand why Bella was willing to sacrifice herself to save Edward during the Victoria/Riley fight. I mean what the heck!! I'm sooo scared. I love Eclipse. It's my favorite book. This guy is totally off base. I really think we need to start flooding Summit with corresondence and calls. Because I have a bad feeling about this guy. He's messing with my story already and he hasn't even made one shot yet.
  • phillygirl19119
That's correspondence. I'm so upset, I can't even catch my typos and grammatical errors before posting. I have to lay down. This David guy is putting me in a state of depression.
  • SANDY
    OH MY GOD!!!
    I just hate him!!!!
    What does he mean????
That he will ruin the film???
What happened with the guys who ever said "we want david on Eclipse"????
    They are just sooooooo WRONG!!!!!

The entire TWILIGHT saga is from Bella´s POV!!!!
He is going to make the film MORE OBJECTIVE???
    What's on earth means that?????!!!!!!!

He started soo bad, I think almost all the fans hate him and doesn't want him on the film!!!! Ash! I'm kinda mad right now!!!!

Eclipse is going to turn into a bad copy of "30 days of night"!
    mmmm
I am just sooo afraid on what Twilight story will become!!! He's not gonna stay true to the book!!!!!! I mean, when they said Chris were gonna direct New Moon I kind of freak out, but, Come on! He always say he was gonna stay true to the book, that he will do everything possible to bring FANS what the expected!!! This David guy is just like "I don't care about Twilight fans".... Summit should close his mouth or give him some script so he stop Freaking out the fans!!!!!!!!!!!

God! We need to do something to change HIM!!!!!!!!!
  • hmm. I dunno. I still feel 'weird' about him like I did with Catherine..

    CHRIS WEITZ FOR BREAKING DAWN!!!
  • rain girl
David, I didn't hear a single thing about the romance between Bella and Edward. You'd better not skip over it because h e l l hath no fury like an angry Twi fan! Summit, what were you thinking when you decided he was the right guy for the job? I mean, of all the directors in the universe this twi hater was the best you could find? Puleeeeeeeeease!
  • iloverob
one other thing i don't get is why does he say Eclipse is darker? I know in the end it is dark because of the newborn fight, etc, but New Moon was the only book/movie that should be darker in feeling and mood. When Edward returns everything should be back to normal- or lighter than New Moon because Bella will be happier. I know Bella is stressed about a lot of things in Eclipse such as the unknown vampire in her room- the volturi, victoria, jacob-- but she's not depressed just stressed. the movie shouldn't be so dark and gruesome as Slade is wanting it to be. I'll die if that's how it's gonna be. He juss needs to start taking it more seriously as in talking to Stephanie about what she wants from this movie, and he needs to keep it in line with the book, otherwise the fans will be pissed- im sorry we will be.
  • TeamSwitzcob (TRotation/Meg)
It does have darker qualities to it.. Rosalie's background, Jasper's background (both rather dark and supposedly being covered). Not to mention the tribal legends.. not exactly a fairy-tale. Then we have the newborn army and the big fight. And the Volturi killing Bree.

There are definitely darker elements that weren't in New Moon (no fights - it was just sad because of her depression).
  • scape
I'm with you. Eclipse is not dark. Yes, there is alot of angst over Victoria, etc., but it is not dark. This is the book where Bella and Edward's relationship takes precedence over everything. I'm not really sure he knows what he's gotten into.
Everyone says wait and see, well after he does what he does, that's the movie.
  • Raven
Summit! How could you hire this man? He obviously doesn't know the series! GET SOMEONE WHO KNOWS THE SERIES! I was never worried about Chris Weitz but this man is flashing his ignorance like a giant neon sign! Please, he's not the right director for Eclipse!
  • JB
Great job Summit! You've hired a man with a history of hating Twi and now after reading this article it's clear he doesn't have an effing clue about the series. (1.) The statement "The third book is from Bella’s point of view, but the film will be more objective.” HELLO David? ALL the books are from Bella's POV! Clearly David is not truly informed about the series. (2.) “We are going to focus on the origin stories of several characters, like Jacob, and show how Bella will decide between Edward and Jacob.” FOCUS ON THE ORIGINS of certain characters including Jacob? WHAT?! READ ECLIPSE AGAIN DAVID!! (3.) “It was tough for a middle-aged man to get into,” he admits, “since they are written for 15-year-old girls." Clearly David hasn't done his homework. He really should ask Stephenie Meyer who the target audience was when she wrote the books. David, you're not exactly embracing the fans, men and women BTW, with such a stupid statement. He shouldn't do any more interviews until he knows more about the subject matter and have a better vision of the movie. I don't think he's the right person for the job because of his previous super negative comments about Twilight. His apology didn't ring true because if he was truly sorry for saying all those horrible things, then he would have apologized long before now. He's only in it for the money! This is very scary to me. Summit DON'T LET HIM SCREW UP THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!
  • Carol60
I just hope Slade doesn't forget the one attribute 99.8% of his fans share: WE ARE MOSTLY WOMEN/GIRLS. Given that tidbit, If Slade takes the romance of Bella and Edward out of the saga and puts in gruesome gore instead, it'll be the biggest disappointment in movie history. The heart of Eclipse is the Edward/Bella/Jacob triangle and not 45 minutes of newborn vampires being slaughtered.
  • iloverob
In a previous interview, one man (forgot his name) said they are finding a director that will best represent each of the films--meaning someone new for BD too. Although it's too soon to tell, i'm nervous about David Slade, but then again i was nervous for Chris as well and he's been completely wonderful. I don't know about BD but i just hope that they either get someone amazing or have Chris come back (:
  • Trini77
OMG!! This guy is so going to ruin Eclipse. It seems like he doesn’t get the book AT ALL! Also, I’m getting a little tired of everyone saying that these books were written for 15 yr olds. When Stephenie Meyer started writing Twilight she was 29 yrs old and was writing this story for herself. So she didn’t have a specific audience in mind but HERSELF as a 29yr old woman. She has said this in many many interviews. That being said this story is for all ages so we should all stop mentioning ages. Sorry had to get that off my chest..hehe.Slade needs to get his act together if rehearsals start in August, which is not far off. I’m a big fan of many books but The Twilight Saga has a special place in my heart and I’m looking forward to seeing the whole saga come to life on the big screen. I’ll be hoping and praying that Slade gets more enthusiastic about directing Eclipse.
  • "We are going to focus on the origin stories of several characters, like Jacob"

This has my heart pounding!! If there can be extra Edward in New Moon. Extra Jacob in Eclipse is only fair. Especially since Eclipse is when we dig into the legends of the tribe, and Jacob's past.

That being said......YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!! Does this mean, maybe, we will have Rachel, Rebecca, and Sarah making an appearance in Eclipse? Plus there is Quil Sr, Kim (go Teneil Whiskeyjack 4 Kim!!) and a few others.

P.S. Slade better not forget about the rest of the pack.

P.S.S. - My mom had the same problem with the books. She couldn't get past the part that they were "written for 15 year olds." Therefore she isn't a massive fan of the saga.

no, really I do, and I have trust in him, I wish everyone did though.
  • twifan01
crap... seriously David better make this work out. it's a difficult part to capture everyone's emotions so i hope he knows what he's doing.
  • Everything what I want from them (M. Rosenberg & D. Slade) is that they treat Jasper/Alice's story with respect.
  • ♥Krisbert76♥
they cut alice's story out at the end of twilight, which doesn't really take a lot of film time, i wish they did it like the book ... giving hints to where alice came fr.
  • Yes... that's one of the reasons why I really don't have some much hope. If they even show Jasper's hability...they didn't even mention it!
  • ZaraLovesTwilight
Argue all you want but the books are mainly targeted at young adults but it can be for any age audience younger or older, depends on the person.

But, at least DS won't change the story like CH and be "different".

With the "origin stories" thing with Jacob, I don't know what he means by that and when he talks about how Bella chooses between Edward and Jacob, maybe he will have flashbacks of Bella & Edward, Bella & Jacob.
  • Breesmom~team Bel-Ami Rob
With the way he explains things "this third book is from Bella's pont of view" (no kidding!), "shows who Bella chooses between Edward and Jacob", "...I don't really know..." (HUH) Ijust hope he realizes by now that Bella chooses Edward!

Right! Maybe he is just really, really inarticulate but he does worry me sometimes when he starts talking to the press...he doesn't seem to "get" the story (and the characters?) of the Twilight Saga.

This director makes me nervous. First, he insulted the film, Twilight, then he had to eat his words and now. . . . he doesn't know how Eclipse will go because he hasn't started shooting yet? Bless Catherine Hardwicke and Chris Weitz who were VERY CLEAR on their approaches. Hope Summit knows what it's doing with David Slade because what I've read so far about the man doesn't give me confidence. Yes, there's action in Eclipse, but the saga is, at its core, a beautiful sexy romance, as well as an emotional triangle between Bella, Jake and Edward. Hope he's up to it.
  • scape
Type your comment here.I think they hired this guy because he will probably do a good fight scene. BUT Eclipse is the book where Edward's and Bella's relationship and romance soars. Does he get that?? Twilight was too short to really develop the relationship, New Moon is mostly about Jacob and Bella so Eclipse should be the one with not only great action, but with alot more intimacy with Edward and Bella.

I only hope that woman who writes the screenplay and Stephenie make sure that this is included.

By the way, if he ever read all the books he would know that they were not written for 15 year olds. In my opinion, that was the fault of the publishers marketing. I'm 57 years old and I say it is a timeless love story that spans all ages.

I have my fingers crossed on this one.
  • Pat F.
I agree - I am 59 years old and i LOVE these stories. They really touch you. Above all it ia love story. I truly hope they will get into the relationship more in 'Eclipse" because there is alot to be told there. Can't wait.
  • Breesmom~team Bel-Ami Rob
Yes, exactly. This is a story that all ages can relate to.
  • TeamBloodsuckers
wow, uhhhh lets just say its all going to look fine...?
  • rpattzgirl
I don't think Summit, or SM or the cast would be a part of something that ruined the book. He may stray, but what director hasn't? It's not like we have any say so in the matter anyway, right? We just need to trust that the right decision has been made and that he will do the book justice. None of the movies are ever going to be just like the books-we can only hope that the director can enhance the stories without changing too much. A lot of it has to do with the screenplay itself, and we all know we've had issues with that in the past..

Lets take deep breaths**sigh** and cross our fingers.

“The third book is from Bella’s point of view, but the film will be more objective.” HE WILL DEPART FROM THE BOOKS POV...BELLA'S. IT WILL BE RADICALLY DIFFERENT!!!

And just how will he do that? “We are going to focus on the origin stories of several characters, like Jacob, and show how Bella will decide between Edward and Jacob.”

LIKE WHAT.... JACOB BEING BORN? IF YOU REALLY READ THE ARTICLE... ABOUT IT WAS "HARD TO GET INTO...BEING THEY WERE MADE FOR 15 YEAR OLDS"...

DOES THE MAN KNOW NOTHING???? SM DID NOT SET OUT TO WRITE THEM FOR TEENS.. TEENS ARE NOT THE MAIN AUDIENCE NOW....

    I hope so!
  • atwilightmom Team By The Book
What he needs to focus on is the book the Stephenie Meyer wrote. He should not try to tear apart and paint over a Picasso...

It is NOT HIS STORY to tell... IT IS STEPHENIE MEYER'S....so it is not rocket science. He should not get caught up in his small minded limited violent viewpoint and just show what she wrote.
    PERIOD.
  • RealMenGlitter
“One of the cool things about shooting a movie based on a book is that it is not a film the studio can really change,” he tells us. “Not that the studio would want to change anything, of course!” David promises that they will stick close to the book – there is no sense in changing the story at all."

changing to another POV only adds to the story. It brings in more emotion and you understand why things are happening the way they are. Stephenie gave us a clear idea of how Jacob was feeling reading the books but those kind of things get lost when translating it on screen if its only from one point of view. He claims he will stick with the story so really I dont think we should be freaking out.
  • Breesmom~team Bel-Ami Rob
I'm not feeling like freaking out but I am concerned. He may be just inarticulate, as I have said before. We don't have much to go on as he hasn't done much in the way of movies and romance (or relationship) isn't his thing.
  • RealMenGlitter
I dont know how hes going to handle the romance either. That might not be a strong point of his which is a little concerning because some of the most critical romantic scenes are in Eclipse. At least stephenie will be there to oversee things Im sure.

Some people are refusing to give him a chance. They immediately jump to "Oh he hates twilight hes gunna screw this up" Im not gunna form judgments until they at least start filming. I like the switch to other POVs and his promise to stay true to the book. Other than that Im trying to keep an open mind.
  • Breesmom~team Bel-Ami Rob
Oh, I have an open mind. I also have faith that Summit does not want to see him or anyone else screw this up for them...they see BIG bucks in this series and I don't see them wanting any radical changes.
  • RealMenGlitter
Exactly $$$ are def in their eyes. I am nervous about how the "love triangle" is going to translate to screen regardless of who the director is. It goes much deeper than Bella is in love with two different guys and cant decide who to be with, which is how I think it may look on screen if a lot of the key dialogue is missing. There are just so many factors she has to consider that I worry wont translate right.
  • Breesmom~team Bel-Ami Rob
I agree. This is a key ingredient. The attraction, the connection Bella has to both men and how she is torn between them but ultimately Edward is the only one for her. In the scope of the entire story her and Edward's love-- is her fate, they were pre-destined to be together for eternity. Like it or not, this is the story, Stephenie Meyers story. That's why (please don't hit me!) Jacob has to end up with Renesmee--that is their destiny.

In a world that thinks there is such a thing as total choice, this is a difficult concept, but in a great romance, sacrificing for the ultimate love is important. Real life, somwhat different...but if a real-all-consuming lifelong love is a beautiful dream and not often realized.

Anyway, I do hope they get it...dialogue is key, I hope they get that right ..and I hope for lots of "I love yous" and the bed and knee-bent proposal and Jacob's kisses.......(I have quite a long wish list!
  • RealMenGlitter
I am so glad to see we are on the same page. You worded it beautifully. I hope all the people behind the scenes understand the depth of the story as well as we the fans do.

Actually Im one of the few who didnt mind Jacob imprinting on Renesmee. As you said it was destiny. As weird as it was at first it made sense in the long run.

Nothing wrong with a long wish list. It just means we are dedicated :)
  • Breesmom~team Bel-Ami Rob
In the middle of my wish list is for Stephenie Meyer to come back to the Twilight Saga to write Jacob and Renesmee's story. Just because you are destined to be with someone doesn' mean that the journey will be easy or smooth. I'd like to see their unique story unfold.
  • RealMenGlitter
Her writing is very simple but I have read the series almost three times (im on eclipse now) and every time I pick up on new things that I completely missed or I suddenly understand a character much clearer. I have never reread a book in my life but with these I cant stop rereading!
  • RealMenGlitter
"unique" is certainly the keyword there. Their story I would love to see too. Im sure Stephenie would come up with twists and turns that we would never expect. Of course I would love to see the maturing of Edward and Bella's relationship as well.
  • Breesmom~team Bel-Ami Rob
I would like to see Stephenie expand on everyone's story. Get everone out of high school and getting on with their lives. I would be fascinated to see what she can come up with.

Her writing style is so simple yet her ideas blend the best and most interesting in classic literature. She really makes me want to read!
  • snuffiesnoop
At this point I just hope he includes the ROMANCE parts of the book.

    I mean.......it IS essentially a romance isn't it?

GOD I just know he is going to mess it up. I decided to edit my wittle baddie words.
  • Breesmom~team Bel-Ami Rob
Exactly! In my opinion, relationships are at the heart of the Twilight saga. Look at all the different relationships in the books. Everyone is in couples, families. That is the heart of the Saga...the whole story.
  • 4thewolf
Why does this man scare me so?

  • atwilightmom Team By The Book
    Mr. Slade,
I hope that you will resign from directing Eclipse. Why you might ask?

One: a person who is so blind to who is the real audience of the Twilight books should not be in anyway involved in the project. Women AND men, 20 years of age and older....much older... are the silent majority.

Second: Anyone who is so prejudice and judgemental against something he has not even read does not have the emotional or mental capability to direct a movie based on a that said literature.

Third: YOU WILL SCREW UP THE MOVIE. You already have stated you are departing from Bella's POV. It is NOT UP TO YOU to tell us the story. THE STORY IS THERE.... JUST PUT IT ON SCREEN.

It is NOT ROCKET SCIENCE... you are not out to recreate a masterpiece. Would you walk up to a Picasso, a Degas, an O'Keefe painting and suddenly rip it up and start painting over it? No. Then have respect for Stephenie Meyer and her masterpiece and LEAVE IT ALONE!

You seem to be a "one-note-wonder". If you insist on directing Eclipse, then I suggest you stretch your emotional range than that of a "teaspoon" and start asking Meyer how the movie should go. Its not your story to tell, sir.....IT IS HERS.
  • Kassielovesthecullens
Um...if the storyline is changing from Bella's POV to something else...I'm sure that has more to do with how MR wrote out the script. Just saying........
  • ancha85
I don't think he feels this way at all. Read newer interviews by him and you'll see.
  • 30yearoldtwifan
No offense, but this was quoted from that interview

David promises that they will stick close to the book – there is no sense in changing the story at all.'

so where does he say hes changing the story line? sorry, I think just because people didn't like 30daysofnight, they don't like him and that's not fair. JMO..
  • atwilightmom Team By The Book

  • 30yearoldtwifan
Ok, you dont need to type in all caps, that can come off as yelling, I get your point.
  • atwilightmom Team By The Book
Not yelling. Being suggestive and yelling are different. I'm trying to make a point.
  • atwilightmom Team By The Book
PLUS, I can't do italics, so I am responding in all caps to clarify the difference.
  • kerbear585
good. i am glad that he is bringing in the origin story of the vampires. i have total confidence in David that he is going to make the movie great. these directors know how important this series is to the fans so they will not make it anything less than amazing.
  • TeamBloodsuckers
Ok first, the target audience IS young adults. The people who read the books aren't just young adults and it's apparent that it is extremely popular with older people, but it is in the YOUNG ADULT section. Personally, I think he'll be good for the saga. Maybe he'll give the story credibility in the eyes of the opposite sex and then maybe my male coworkers and classmates will lay off. I think he DOES get it, he's just not good with interviews. Especially written interviews. It's unfair to judge until the movie is out. I'm excited to see Victoria build the army (if that's what he means) and I'm excited for the backstories. Give him a chance :)

    *gets off soap box*
  • scape
I don't think its necessary to see Victoria building the army. There are so many great things in the book it would be a shame to leave them out because time is spent on building the army. There's plenty of action in the book without that. We need more of Bella and Edward romance not just focusing on action, action action.
  • Breesmom~team Bel-Ami Rob
I agree, it is so apparent by now that he is definately not good with interviews.

Book stores (Borders, Barnes and Noble, etc,) do understand that the Twilight Saga is not a teen or exclusively young adult phenomena--they carry the books in several different areas of their store (young adult, romance, horror, up by the register, end displays, basically everywhere but the science and economics section!)

I am willing to give him a chance. Especially because I am anxious to see the movie and, really ,we have no choice, Keeping my fingers (and toes) crossed
  • ancha85
I totally agree. We need to get the opposite sex interested in the Saga. There is so much in it for them, yet all anyone ever focuses on is the love part.

YES, that part is very important, but it can turn people off. Many teenage/20 year old guys I know didn't want to see the movie, but once they saw it said "that was really good!". They will enjoy the next two even more.

Of course, we HAVE to have our love story most prominent.
  • AlohaSD "Robso-Freakin-Lutely"
Here, here. My sense is that Chris Weitz will bring a new credibility and audience to Twilight series. And now I think that Spade will increase the it even further.

Imagine if we had just one director, CH, the series would never, ever get beyond a certain audience and genre.

And we always have the books........
  • lizzie
    you guys worry too much.
have any of you even seen any of his movies.
sure, 30 days of night was a bit of a stretch from the twilight saga, he has not made one remotely badly made film.
30 days of night wasn't the greatest but it was very visually dynamic and his film hard candy was amazing.
he's good at what he does really knows how to capture the emotional aspect of it.
and i'm sure he's not just capable of doing horror films.

goog lord, have a little faith people!
  • 30yearoldtwifan
Ya know Lizzie I agree 100% and thank you for not bashing DS. I sometimes think people want to bash just for the fun of it, it happens every time a new person comes in on the Saga. "beat them down first, then love them after"Its actually pretty annoying after a while.
  • RealMenGlitter
I agree. Im actually looking forward to his interpretation. As he said they havent even started filming yet so how do we already have him on the hit list? I think he might really surprise us.
  • 30yearoldtwifan

  • RealMenGlitter
of course :) We just always seem to agree.

I have 100% TRUST in DS! He WILL bring what he has to for Eclipse. God people so harsh on him all the time? "waaaa I didn't like 30daysofnight" hes going to turn Eclipse into that to,....for the 100th millionth time, 30daysofnight WAS a GRAPHIC COMIC DS ..followed ...the graphic comic to the T.. the world was suppose to be bloody... demon like.. that's..the way it was written. If anything I know he will bring the book to life for Eclipse the way it was written.

But David 15 year olds ??? sorry. Im not happy with you on that comment lol

There is quite a bit about the origons of all the major characters that has hardly been touched on yet. The whole Cullen family, the story of Jacob's tribe, for example. There is so much to tell. He is right about that. These stories need to be told.

Ever since I heard that DS got the job and then with the recent casting news (casting Royce and Maria among others) it was clear where this movie was headed, action land. It is clear that they are going to be filming not only Jasper's story but Rosalie's as well, cause from the DS perspective its gritty and action originated. Really, my concern would be if they are putting those stories/scenes in then what is being left out? It is only a 2 hour movie and if its all filled with supporting character back-story and "action" where does the rest, ya know the important stuff, fit in? I can see where DS is headed, where he always heads, and despite being able to direct and give stunning visual that still does not equate to a good storyteller. But I will wait and see what happens, though in the back of my mind I am prepared for the huge departure this film will be from the book, sadly.

David Slade should think carefully before he speaks. I'm not sure he realizes how devoted Twilight fans are. He has already insulted the series/movies/fans before and was fortunate that we didn't turn on him. He better make this movie with us in mind or it is going to tank at the box office. I just keep picturing the "30 days of Night" vampires terrorizing Forks and La Push. Ewww.

    True that.

A friend of mine just calmed me down... I didn't consider Stephenie... I guess she won't let him go overboard with all the horror scenes. She loves Edward and Bella and Jacob more than we do.... If we can't count on David Slade, then I guess we have to trust in Stephenie's veto-power or sth (don't know how to say that in english :P)

aand jacobs too at the same time..
    and the proposall.!
if there isnt enough edward OH MYYYY !

but wtvr eclipse will be more about him i guess..
  • Breesmom~team Bel-Ami Rob
I do have failth that there will be plenty of Edward in all the movies. They do seem to understand how imortant he is. (Look at New Moon, they added more just as a precaution) Plenty of Edward, Bella, and Jacob for everyone!
  • XeniaCullen
Now I'm really scared! I love Eclipse! It's my favourite book of the 4. I love the Edward-and-Bella moments and reread them about 20 times! And now David wants to focus on the darker points!? I swear to you all, if I don't see anything like an Edward-Bella-moment in the trailer I won't go to the cinema to see Eclipse!!!
  • les
Im very concerned about david doing this movie i have been since day 1. For one he is a horror movie director and even though there is plenty of action in this book there is also the story of Edward and Bella and that cant be overlooked at all in this movie. It is going to be sad if we dont get to see Edward get down on 1 knee just so david can add a scene thats not even in the book. And to add one more thing these books are meant for more than just 15 year old girls i should know i havent been a teenager in many years.
  • ancha85
Many of us aren't teens. It's just that the media is constantly playing that up.
  • Don'tDrink&RunWithWoodenStakes
I've read some comments and I am worried too, even though I was trying not to be.
"going to focus on the origin stories of several characters, like Jacob, and show how Bella will decide between Edward and Jacob"...I just hope he doesn't focus too much on Jacob haha and forget the rest. I guess he thinks about Jacobs family and his ancestors and his second in command possition and possible position as an alpha, so if that's it I'm fine. That was in the books, and I'm guessing when he said "several characters" it includes Jasper and Rosalie.

And I hope they make it clear at the end of Eclipse, in any case there was never a choice. Even when she realised that she has feelings for Jacob she knows that she isn't going to be with him. She was never choosing. That's why I accepted Eclipse, and I hated it before.

And not let me start about that "books for 15 years old girls". I hope he realises that Twilight audience is really all ages.

I just hope he gave that interview in hurry, they caught him at "30 days and night" signing...so maybe his mind wasn't in the right place just yet.
I hope Summit people will realise that we need more assurance, and that we'll have some official statement from him with the angle on how he' aproaching Eclipse and his thoughts about some characters.
  • ancha85
He did say that it was hard for him to get past the "15 year old stuff" at first, as that is what the media always hypes it up to be, but once he got past that he realized that it is really a great story!

Also, it was a choice for Bella. It was a very lopsided choice, but it was a choice. She saw her what her life could be if she chose Jacob, which was beautiful to her, but chose Edward instead.
SM says that this makes her choice even MORE meanful, because she is giving up so much to choose him.
  • Don'tDrink&RunWithWoodenStakes
I get that...but for me there was an option...Not once when I was reading Eclipse I doubted that she's going to choose, because she has already chosen.
I understood she is giving up a lot, but I just saw that as a common sense kicking through because she was never afraid of being changed before for example...and the fear and realisation what she's going to do finally came to her.
But I was thinking toward the end after the realisation that she has feelings for Jacob too...even after that kiss she was regretfull and guilty but not doubtfull in her future with Edward...she just realised what her life could've been with Jacob. That's the reason I liked their story so much, it's one of those larger than life loves....something stronger that a regular love..something that maybe happens really rarely.
I'm having a little trouble expressing my thoughts right now but not to get over analyzing...my point was I hope they'll show it in the right way, because if they over do it it could easilly be confusing and messed up. Though I said to myself I won't judge I did it again....I'll try to hold it until we get some real information when the filming actually starts.

Oh I know he realised he it is a good story, but that doesn't change that he thinks it's for 15 years olds even after reading it....But anyway I guess we got used to tha. I think with more movies they'll see the true demographic of this saga.
  • Breesmom~team Bel-Ami Rob
    I understand...I agree with what you're saying.

Everyone would like to believe that there is one all-consuming, passionate love, one soul that was meant exclusively for them, that you are destined to belong with forever (and if that loved one is a perfect, dreamy, hot guy who happens to be a virgin and has waited one hundred years for you to come into his life, and is willing give up his life to protect them.....

The things that dreams are made of!

dude!!! I don't think it's going to be close to the book!! I can just feel it!!!! I just saw 30 days of night last and I hated it!!!! If he would just stick to the book, bring the book alive which I feel chris is doing he will be fine. It's only of the most romantic of the four books!!! He need to get it right!!!
  • snuffiesnoop
I just hope by creepy and dark he doesn't mean "30 Days of Night" creepy.

Wasn't that the movie where vampires live off a town in alaska or something? I hope he doesn't turn it into something like that. I didn't see all of the movie just the last big fight and to tell the truth the vampires there didn't seem like my idea vampires. This movie was just gross and ewww.....their mouths were icky. I imagine vampires to be monsters but not look like them you know?

I hated this movie, and I'm not feeling to pleased he is directing Eclipse.

And its not from Bella's POV????

I guess all movies are a little objective because it is hard for a movie to be inside a character's head like we are in the books, but jacob's story??? Jacob's story is New Moon! Eclipse is about how Edward is the Eclipse to Jacob. He blocks him completely out to stand between Bella and Jacob. without Edward there bella would have totally fallen for Jacob but because he is there Bella can only choose Edward.

Its not about Jacob. I'm feeling a bit pouty.

Although by character stories I am hoping we hear about Rosalie's story and Jasper. I'm looking forward to that but I also wish they had told about Alice's story as well. Maybe we can hear more about that in the 3rd movie too. although I'm not feeling this guy yet.

Shouldn't he know something about how is planning on shooting the movie?

I mean don't they start filming this fall.
  • Breesmom~team Bel-Ami Rob
Good point about the eclipse. I agree but never quite saw it that simply. Puts the whole book in a nutshell.

Please send that "nutshell" breakdown" of the book to David Slade and M. Rosenberg ...then they have no choice but to get it....(Hopefully Stephenie already wrote that in her manifesto she gave them)
  • ancha85
Just to let you know, 30 Days is based on a Graphic Novel, and he based his movie almost EXACTLY like the novel. That is why the vampires are so disgusting.

There is a very sad love story in that movie, too. I found it very touching.

DS will go as much by the book as possible, like the did with 30 days.
  • snuffiesnoop
Well that makes me me hopeful that he will stay with the book fairly well. I know it can't be exactly like the book but I just want it to be as close as it can possibly be :D

Thanks for telling that. Like I said I only saw the last big fight so I don't know the entire plot of the story.
  • B. C
If We were to go by this Interview things dont look well sounds so good . for one he says Eclipse is Darker. Witch means he is going to go all out on the victoria dying scenes . Witch seems like his main focus : We are going to focus on the origin stories of several characters, like Jacob, and show how Bella will decide between Edward and Jacob.” I understand about the Origin but does that mean the love Story is Secound to the Origin .
  • ancha85
I think the love story will be very prominent, but the origin stories are very important, too.

Twilight is totally about Edward and Bella's relationship.

In New Moon and Eclipse, that relationship is EXTREMELY important, but not the only important part of the story, like in Twilight.

In Breaking Dawn, their love story is even less prominent (I didn't say less important, only less prominent). That is why so many people weren't thrilled with it at first, but once they read it again, realized it was a great ending.
  • TarAncalyme
okay I´m sure he´ll do great with the visual effects and stuff, but I´m a little worried about that edward-or-jacob-choosing part... I mean, bella said clearly in the book that there wasn´t really a choice, since she always knew she´d be with edward... and I´m afraid that this guy (who honestly doesn´t seem to have read the whole saga at all) is just going to turn it into some neverending internal struggles and make it look like she really doesn´t know which one to choose...I really hope I´m just being paranoid here, but I don´t know...
  • giggsy_girl
well now I'm worried, seems like the guy read eclipse only, bad move Slade.

the third book is from bella's POV... well DUH! lol

i'm concerned he seems like he doesn't get it at ALL. why oh why did summit ever hire him? he seems like he's only in it for the money and doesn't even care about the story. chris weitz really does care. i want him for breaking dawn!

and does anyone else find it really worrying that his answer to what he's going to do with the movie is "i don't really know" ?!?

    This guy scares me.

This is a VERY old interview, when it was "cool" to be making fun of "Twilight".
Since reading the books, he has changed his tune completely, even apologizing online and to fans in Vancouver for his "hasty" remarks.

Now, it is very true that he might be doing this, because he is now the director of Eclipse. But do we all really think he is going to RUIN his career by messing up this movie? Too much is at stake for him and Summit, plus SM will come down on him if he tries to not follow the book.

In my opinion, he will most likely do much better than CH did on Twilight. She DID mess with it too much with her quirky ideas.
I love her passion for the story and thank her tremendously for the wonderful actors playing the parts, but Twilight left a LOT to be desired.

I totally agree with you, I like his movies, but since the whole twitter thing (even if he hadn't read the books or whatever) I really dislike him as a person. I feel like he just doesn't care about the books, or about the fans, with the whole 15 year old girls, he makes it sound I dunno, like the books are dumb, I'm sorry that's just my opinion, I'm really keeping my fingers crossed hoping he doesn't destroy eclipse!!! Please bring Chriss back for BD!!!
  • i will not judge david yet i want to see how he directs eclispe and hopefully he will be great i mean people had their doubts on chris and if u say u never had any doubts in him that may be a lie i know i had a few doubts but now he seems like he is doing a great job....... i will not judge david until eclispe comes out ....and hopefully he will be great like chris is :D

  • lol well i guess i do too.... starting now
  • mschicklet
I loved Golden Compass so immediately I was excited to hear that he was going to use his CGI magic on the wolves. Because I didn't want the wolves to look terrible (like they did in Underworld OMG). But in terms of developing the plot, I kept having bad visions of "American Pie The Twilight Saga" which scared the crap out of me.

But of course now I love him and I think he's doing a great job with New Moon so far. It's a bad idea to judge unless you see that he's actually butchering the relevant source material (in this case, it would be bad to judge Slade until we see evidence that he's butchering Eclipse).
  • yes i agree that is what i am trying to say do not judge until we see for ourselves that he is making eclispe a bad movie u know :D
  • TeamSwitzcob (TRotation/Meg)
Not to mention... he hasn't exactly been interviewed a whole lot yet about this, and he doesn't start filming until Sept. He's got time. I'm sure we'll get some more in-depth stuff about what he plans to do.. not to mention the cast read the books, they have SOME say it seems, and Stephenie will be involved.

The poor guy just keeps getting bashed... and we barely know anything yet!
  • B. C
I have seen his movies and I am not going to Lie he is good at what he does witch in Opinion is Sci-fi and Horror. But What got me thinking is can he capture the Love Story I hope so .
  • mredwardswifey
hahaha congrats LMcullen and FERNI!!!! yay you got second! i still haven't had my moment yet! boooo :( anyways, i read your other comments about Bella's POV, Well im with you on that!! ALL the books are in Bella's POV except on Jacob's part in Breaking Dawn
  • Lin
    Can you say....WORRIED!!!
  • Carol
This series appeals to a wide group of ages including moms and grandma's. This is a Romeo and Juliet story for modern times. Eclipse is more focused on the romance with Edward ending with engagement. I am leary of this Director. I hope Summit hasn't screwed up with this guy.
  • B. C
Well I Talk about this Interview on the Kristen Thread so I will Repost what I said hear .

Oh my Ok now I am Scared of What David Slade might do to Eclipse I think he should read the book Again. I mean its odvious he has only read Eclipse . With Comments Like this :“The third book is from Bella’s point of view) Well Last time I check they all were From her Point of View . What does he mean by : they are written for 15-year-old girls ) Ok I never heard Stephenie Meyer say that was her target audience . I love Eclipse but I just am not Getting a good Felling about this Guy . I hope I am wrong.
  • teeeeeamEDWARD
same. be worried be very worried... they should either stick with chris or chosen someone else!! hes gona end up making it really spooky and whatever and make ir really different to the others. theyre suppposed to be a series not seperate things!!
  • Twi-Hardness
I MISS CHRIS WEITZ! I don't really believe this guy knows that much about Twilight. Not from Bella's POV?! About Jacob? What does he mean by that? Jacob had his time in New Moon, it's back to Edward now! And a little of him. Please, know what you're doing David!!!
  • TeamSwitzcob (TRotation/Meg)
Uh.. it's not all about Edward in Eclipse. Jake's extremely important in Eclipse, too, he's just sharing the time with Edward now. This is her "can't stop seeing Jake" time along with her advancing relationship with Edward. The big decision! We need coverage of all of them.
  • ancha85
Sorry, but I don't agree with this. Jacob is VERY important in Eclipse. So is the Wolfpack. This is where the "triangle" actually happens. The tent scene is sooo important. It is legendary.

Sure, Edward and Bella's relationship is extremely important in Eclipse, but so is her relationship with Jacob and Alice and Charlie.

All of the characters are important. It wouldn't be Eclipse without them ALL.

Bella's point of view is important, but they can't shoot a movie from only Bella's point of view. How are they going to show the Cullen and Wolfpack confrontation with the Newborns if they just shoot through Bella's eyes?
    She wasn't even there.

I agree that Twilight had to be almost all through Bella's eyes, and New Moon and Eclipse should have a lot of her point of view, but these are movies.
Things need to be shown, because we cannot hear Bella's thoughts that tell us what happens in the books. We need to SEE what happens.

I think David Slade will do fine, as long as he sticks as much as possible to the book, which it looks like he has every intention of doing.

(Plus, there is NO WAY Summit or SM is going to let him stray from it, especially with all of the criticism that CH got from the straying she did.)
  • Twi-Hardness
Yes, Eclipse is about all of those characters. So why did he only say about Jacob? Alice and all the Cullens are just as important as Jacob is (so is the pack, even though I only like Seth out of all of them).

We never get to get into Edward's POV except in Midnight Sun. So if we get some of Jacob that wasn't in the book, why not Edward? It doesn't have to be from Jake's eyes just like you said. I hope it's just over them. Like threw no one's eyes for some parts.

I'm going to have a open mind about him, but still his idea's scare me a little since he's done horror movie a lot. I really hope he doesn't try and add any horror aspects of it.
  • AlohaSD "Robso-Freakin-Lutely"
I agree with you, ancha. And I would add that it has to remain PG-13. If not, they would exclude a huge segment of their target audience. Creatively, a lot can still be done w/ PG-13.

    Thanks for your thoughtful analysis.
  • ancha85
Of course it has to remain PG-13. Teens love it too much. have
A lot of things can be implied, without actually showing it.
For example, we knew that Emmett and Jasper and Alice were tearing James apart, yet we only saw blurry images of it.

People have been concerned about Breaking Dawn's rating, too, but it doesn't have to be so gruesome that it can't be rated PG-13
  • AlohaSD "Robso-Freakin-Lutely"
ancha, dear!! Where are you from? What is your local time?? I usually don't hear from anyone except my foreign friends as most in U.S. start going to sleep. I'm in Hawaii and it's 7:50 p.m.

This post has been interesting, no? So many strong opinions and fear. I'm secretly wondering if it has to do with Spade's outward appearance. He looks scary, mysterious, a kind of rebel. Evoking an unknown quality. Have you seen his previous movies?
  • ancha85
    Howdy from Dallas, Aloha!

How cool it is that you live in Hawaii! I would love to go there! So beautiful!

And the people and culture seem very beautiful, too! I am fascinated by Native American people and culture (one of the reasons I love the Saga!), and Polynesian people see, very close to them, in my opinion. Beautiful skin and hair, and very spiritual.

I am a teacher, so since school is out, I have been able to take naps in the afternoon, and stay up later at night.

Yes, this post has been interesting, and yes I have a feeling it has a lot to do with DS looks. He is kind've creepy-looking. Not necessarily his physical characteristics, but the way he tries to come across in pics, really weird or rebellious.

Yes, I saw 30 Days of Night. The vamps in it are really disgusting, but I thought the love story was very touching, but sad.

I have not actually read the Graphic Novel that 30 Days is based on, but from what I have read, he went pretty dang close to the book. I don't see any signs of him doing anything different with Eclipse.
(He better do a great job, as it is my favorite book of the Saga!)

It's always nice to make a new friend on newmoonmovie.org! Have you seen the posts from 4thewolf or any of the other Wolfpack girls? They are hilarious!!

    Talk to you again soon!

P.S. I am going to Twicon in July! I am so excited!!
  • AlohaSD "Robso-Freakin-Lutely"
We share some similarities!! I lived in Houston for several years and have visited Fort Worth- Dallas a couple of times. But I must say I prefer Hawaii in which I was born and raised ... I am of Chinese decent.

Eclipse is my favorite also, for the development of Edward's and Bella's relationship and for the tent scene. I got my husband reading the series and he is right at that scene and I'm excited to talk to him about it. To me, it is pivotal in their relationship.

Hard Candy is another movie of Spade's. I watched both knowing that Spade was going to direct Eclipse. I was turned off by 30 Days, but I was intriqued by Hard Candy. The story is bizarre, but the direction and cinematography are excellent. It tells me that he can direct a different kind of movie other than disgusting vampire horror films.

I love the wolfgirls, too. I'll add you to my friends-I-follow list. But, you really need a picture!! They grey face is so unbecoming!

I'll be looking for you! ;-))

Have fun at Twicon, lucky girl!
  • Lily
I agree. I'm seriously concerned that this guy doesn't understand the books or the fans at all. He even admits that the books are just a "good story". Catherine Hardwick and Chris Weitz both admitted to being almost instantly swept away.

    *fingers crossed*
  • Kay
    9th !?
  • Kay
    at last one post

I'm really looking forward to Eclipse with Slade...just curious how creepy it will be LOL
  • Juvenne
8th?!? wow u guys are fast!
  • Twilight14
This guy sucks he dosen't even like the twilight series. GO READ THE ARTICLE!!!
    http://www.firstshowing.net/2009/05/03/david-sl...
HE SUCKS AND I HATE HIM. And it pisses me off the last sentence in the article talking about eclipse not being great WTF it hasen't even strated filming!! Hate Him worst choice ever!
  • ancha85
He gave an interview making fun of Twilight (which MANY people do) before he read the books or saw the movie.
Since he read the books, he has posted online an official apology.

We need to give him the benefit of the doubt. He knows his career will be in EXTREME jeopardy if he messes up this movie.
Summit also knows that if he messes it up, they will lose millions in sales of not only Eclipse, but also BD. They will NOT let him mess it up, especially since they give Stephenie so much say in everything.
  • yes that been posted up here before and he has said he has said he was mis-quoted. I don't think that if he really didn't like the saga he would take it on. He wasn't the only one they interviewed for Eclipse and so surely the guys at summit see something that he can bring that no one else can.
  • mschicklet
"Page not found" and we've seen quotes from him in the past couple months where he's said he does like the Twilight series.
  • teeeeeamEDWARD
after hes said that he thinks its rubbish. its just a cover that he says he likes them (i think)
  • MeMyselfandTwilight
Hmmm... I don't know about him. Not having it in Bella's POV? That'll be weird only because the other two have been. I hope he knows what he's doing...
  • i_<3_rob/taylor/jackson
i agree it will b kinda weird...how is he gonna do that. when the other 2 movies and the books will b in bella's POV hmmm..idk i guess we will just have to wait..

oh & btw that pic of him scares me a little
  • ancha85
I just think he means it won't TOTALLY be in Bella's point of view.
Some scenes will be things that she did not actually SEE, only heard about, for example, the Newborn confrontation, more on the wolfpack, Rosalie and Jasper's stories, etc.
  • giggsy_girl
    he's a scary looking dude
  • teeeeeamEDWARD
yeah he should just follow the books bdhdfkb i hope he doesnt mess it up...
  • mschicklet
Okay this article gave me a headache, so I just came here to say this:

    1) I'm going to assume that what he meant by the books being made for 15 year old girls is that they're shelved in the "young adult" category and that he is enlightened enough to know that probably the majority of fans are in their 20s/30s/etc.

    2) Since, as he said, he hasn't actually started filming (the casting process isn't even done), it's too early to judge him, especially by one interview. I keep repeating that over and over in my head. "Wait til we see some solid proof that he knows what he's doing" (i.e. set pics, more in-depth interviews, etc).

    3) I miss Chris Weitz.
  • peace,<3 ,fire,ice &compromise
i know how funny but i do miss chris weitz already. lol. thats so sad huh. lol. hes not even gone and we already miss him. i hope he does come back for breaking dawn nonetheless. i feel he is the only person that can do this series justice.
  • I just hope he does a great job like Chris Weitz and if possible better. As we keep moving through the saga, I'm expecting to get better and better. I will also miss Chris
:( , just hope he gets to work on Breaking Dawn. Btw in this pic David Slade freaks me out, he looks too serious.
  • hupkm
I understand that the books do have fans in their 20s/30s/etc. but the books were written for young adults, and it's expected that the movie will be too. You have to understand that liking something that isn't actually MEANT to be liked by people in your age group (no offense) means you might be a little dissapointed. If they did do it Rated R (and the same goes for BD) then it would hardly get ANY views and make hardly ANY money. I think you just have to face these facts...sorry, but you can't ruin it for the core audience, which their are probably more of in the first place.
  • bellabearxoxo
But if they change it that much just to make sure it's NOT R rated, even if that doest keep it in the teen range it will totally ruin the way the books were written. Yes they were written for a teen audience, but look at Breaking Dawn. If they try to make it not R rated it will totally ruin it. They would have to take out the honey moon, all the "dirty" scenes, the birth scene, becuase we all know how gorey that will get, and just about all the rest of it. I'm pretty sure that even if it is rated R there will still be PLENTY of fans that will go see it.
  • ckori
If you read any of the interviews by Stephenie then you would know that she did not intend for the books to be a "teen" book...in fact she didnt intend for it to be any age group at all...she was writing for herself. So all I am asking is for whichever director directs it BD that is and for Eclipse and David Slade's direction is that he keeps it as Stephenie intended it!
  • snuffiesnoop
I just want the director to stay as true to the story as possible. I say let the director make and film the movie the way it was intended to be by Stephanie Meyer and then let the cards fall where they may whether it is R or PG13

Although I could care less what they rate the movie actually. To me is irrelevant. My parents have always been kind of liberal about those things so I never really paid that close attention to what the movie was rated. The only time I did was when a friend said something about their parents not letting them see a movie because of rating or something.

I never really had that problem when I got to be 13 or 14 years old and even before that My parents would let me watch some R movies after they saw it first so they could make their own damn decision about whether I should watch it or not. Now I make my own decisions about my life.

So really I agree with you. I honestly just follow the book and I'll be happy no matter the rating.
  • JB
Wrong, Stephenie wrote the books for herself and women her age...check out her early interviews.
  • dracodarling
Absolutely!! Research needs to be conducted to see that SM originally wrote the books for "older" women. She actually had to embrace the fact a "younger" audience began to read her books. When I bought Twilight in Jan. 2007, it was located in the Paranormal Romance Section of the bookstore. The book was moved to the Young Adult later.

I am in my 20s and would not want the "R" rating for the film either. The books were about unconditional love and not blood, guts, and sexual material or language. Most of the vampire activity remained elusive except one scene in BD.
  • Holly
I'm younger then 20 and, innitionally, the books were ment for the young teens and The Host was Meyer's adult book. (it's better then Twilight)

I think i'd prefer it if there was more violence, blood, guts and sex and stuff. But that's because i hate Edward and Bella and their entire 'love' is so utterly fake. One stupid girl who is apparently so beautiful and stuff and the 'perfect guy without any flaws' give me a break...
  • mschicklet
But you're making assumptions about the fans who are in their 20s and 30s. I'm in my mid 20s and I would be upset if they made BD or Eclipse rated R. I've always said on here that I think they could make a better PG13 movie than an R movie because plenty of rated R movies have turned out terrible.
  • vampmom
i am one of the 30's followers. i wouldn't want them to make the movies more older, it is what is beneath it all that draws us in. i just hope that david is able to focus on the entire feel of the book, By now it has been shown that bella chose edward, so focus a little more on the relationship between the cullens and the protectors, that is able to be developed with their battling victoria and the newbies. that is what i hope to see in eclipse.
  • I know what you mean, it is really hard not to judge until we have better interviews and such...but for some reason, I have really negative thoughts about him being the director...and it's really wrong of me cause I don't have any reason to doubt him.

Sorry, that was a really long run-on sentence. :)
  • twilover96
Yes I agree we can't judge until there is official news and big interviews. So no need to worry cause I know this movie will be great and we will all love it keep your fingers crossed!! =D
  • You are right, positive thinking!
    *keeping fingers crossed*
  • TWILOVER96
Right... since we are true fans we need to have hope that it will be a great movie !! So promise to keep fingers crossed!! lol =D
  • FreakinCrazy
Eclipse is my favorite in the whole series (not counting Midnight Sun mind you) and my luck has been just short of getting my killed lately so.... I am not optimistic.

“We are going to focus on the origin stories of several characters, like Jacob..." - Oh god I hope not
  • Eclipse is my fav too, I think...it's hard to choose. :)
And yes, New Moon is about Jacob. Eclipse is all about the vamps and their backgrounds. So I definitely agree with you.
  • TeamSwitzcob (TRotation/Meg)
We do get more info with Jacob and about the tribal legends. I think it would be cool to see that - the stories that are told when Bella's with Jake at the bonfire. That might've been what he meant.

As for the 15 year old comment.. will withhold any comments on that, because if he does his homework, he'll find out there's a fanbase out there of 20, 30, 40, etc. folks. And not to mention.. IT'S CONSTANTLY SAID THAT IT'S FOR TEENS. Grr. That's probably why he said that.

And I'm sure he'll cover the vamps background. Hell, they're hiring for Royce and Maria. And he knows it's a love story... need to give him a little faith!

And I still can't get over how much he reminds me of my uncle. haha.
  • Oh, I know!!! I hate how every time the Twilight series is mentioned, the media says it's "the teen vamp movie", etc. It's so annoying, there are alot of older fans out there.
  • teeeeeamEDWARD
i think they should stick with chris
  • yeah.... at first i thought that they weren't gonna keep catherine cause she was "busy"..... then Chris(yay chris)......now david. why can't they jux keep one?????
  • PKM22
There's now way Chris Weitz could have directed Eclipse too,not unless they pushed the release date back. He doesn't have time to shoot and edit New Moon and do pre production for Elcipse all at the same time. They could bring him back for Breaking Dawn though.
  • twilover96
I agree!! Chris could be back he did such an amazing job with new moon... i bet he wouldn't dissapoint us with BD so hopefully they bring him back cuz that would be great!! But keep fingers crossed for everything to go well !! =D
  • neev
It would be so cool if he could make BD! I lovelovelove Chris!
  • ancha85
Please, please, PLEASE!!!! Bring him back for BD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • mschicklet
I know. I've always known that. But yes I'm hoping for him for BD. Though Summit will probably go with someone else. *sigh*
  • yeah i guess ur right..... ohhh and him being back for BD would be ahhhh-some......
  • 7th?!?
I'm still worried about him. I guess I just have to keep an open mind. I do like how he is planning on developing the individual characters.
Eclipse does require alot of action and good visuals, but it is about the romance. He has to let the romantic element be the driving force throughout the movie, and hopefully not the fact that Victoria is out to get Bella...that and other things are secondary. Eclipse is about all the sacrifices Bella must make in order to be with Edward forever, including Jacob.
  • WOOOHOOOOO
YAY we're in the top 10....
    im proud of us
    lol
  • *jumps up and down excitedly*
I'm proud of us too! I didn't even read the article. I just saw that there was only six comments, so I just wanted to comment first, so I could be in the top ten...I'm such a loser. :) Thank goodness there is an edit button.
  • yeah lol..... thats what i do when they dont have lotz of comments.....lol we're so competitive....HI5....
ohhh and yeah, that EDIT button can save lives..LOL
  • Absolutely! Oh, I have a question: How do you say "awesome" in spanish? Cause I have heard many ways, I think the one I've heard the most is "genial". What do ya think? thanks.
  • ancha85
I am a Spanish teacher, and I would say
    "maravilloso" or "magnifico".
"Genial' is more like saying "cool".

  • ancha85
Hablas muy bien el espanol! Nunca has ido a Texas?
  • yeah genial, magnifico, super, chido,
  • ancha85
In Mexico they say "bien padre!", too.
  • yeah.... chocalas jajaja.....
  • Gracias :)
  • no hay de keso nomas de papa..... (if yooh dnt get that plz tell me.... cause i know it took me awhile)
  • That is so bizarre!!! But so hilarious, ah, I have to go to work, see ya in four hours!
  • yeah....... welll biii
ohh try it with somebody..... and see if they get it
  • "There isn't a pound of potatoes/Pope?!?" Yeah, I have no idea!
  • ok you know how when you say "gracias", the other person says "de nada"... well some ppl instead of "de nada" say "no hay de QUE"...... well you can make it into kinda a little joke and say "no hay de QUESO nomas de papa".... get it :p

it came out in a show A LONG TIME AGO
  • -teremarie .:Sparkly.Vamp:.
ok lol i know spanish and that doesnt make any sense lol are you talking about cheese?
  • lol no keep trying
  • lizzie
we have nothing to worry about with him!
    he's a really great director.
even though i hated 30 days of night but he also did one of my favorite movies, hard candy.
he's really amazing with the visual stuff and does it a very unique way.
  • PKM22
I agree Slade definately has the background to make Elipse a great movie. I know 30 days of Night probably isn't the kind of movie most women enjoy, but no way they could deny that it was visually awesome and well directed. Eclipse needs a director who knows how to direct a character driven movie with some badass action scenes and David Slade has that. Everybody was worried about Chris Weitz when he was chosen for New Moon now they love him.
  • ancha85
    Agree with you!
  • lol the third book is frm bellas POV...... nah really i hadn't noticed.....
  • LOL

but what I think he meant is that they will try and show all the bits that aren't shown in the book....like Victoria getting her army together, the volturi, and of course my loving pack...it won't just be all Bella in every scene which I kind of hope will be a good thing. It will be be good to see what was happening with the pack and the disputes they were having in forming an alliance with the cullens.

I have faith...everyone was worried about Chris till he started filming so I just say give the guy a chance. He knows whats at stake...and he won't cock it up like Catherine did with twilight.
  • yeah lol im with 100%..... i jux thought it was funny
and yeah i hope they show all that stuff..... especially the pack.... even though i love my vamps i know without the pack there really wouldn't be much to ecpipse..... so...... therefore..... I HEART them too.....
ohh and more vicky would be KOOL too
  • haha yes now that everyone gets to see the pack shirtless...everyone is loving the pack!

You're right about Eclipse though which is why its my favorite out the saga, it gives the best balance between the vamps and the wolves.

I still have effings tazer at the ready to use on Melissa...I don't trust her at all.
  • ancha85
I did like that he said that that the studio couldn't change the story, since it was already a book, and that there "was no reason to change the story".
At least he has that right.

Also, he says that it is "darker" and that is true with the confrontation with Victoria and the Newborns.

I also liked the part where he says that they are going to delve into the background of some of the characters.

I am going to love seeing more about the wolfpack, it will be cool to see scenes of Victoria getting her Newborns together and Riley.

Also, they should tell the background stories of Rosalie and Jasper, and while they are doing that, can also show flashbacks of Rosalie saving Emmett from the bear, and Alice in the Asylum.
It would be awesome to see ALL of those, as long as he keeps the love story and the triangle in the forefront.

I know he will be good with the final confrontation fight, that is why Summit chose him, I think.

I think with MR script, he should do fine, as long as she doesn't leave out important scenes for stupid ones, like her and CH did in Twilight!! (like not enough of the falling in love in the Meadow, and stupid Waylon "butt-crack" Santa scenes!)

CH is a very passionate person, and I thank her for choosing such great actors for our characters, but she has some WEIRD ideas.

See... now I hope that they DON'T show Victoria prepping the newborns. I loved that "Holy crap it all makes sense now" moment in the book when things FINALLY fit together.

I'm not going to worry until it's done. I know lots of people were worried as they kept changing directors for the Harry Potter films. This is the same thing. People shouldn't waste all that energy worrying. Go read books in the summer sun and just enjoy life. People should stop wigging out over these things.

I probably used the wrong word. They should show Victoria CREATING all of the Newborns.

That would show two important aspects of the story in one - What a terror Victoria is and how uncontrollable the Newborns are.

a flash back of alice in the assylum would not be good, if you remember she doesn't remember any of it, so it would be a little weird i think. but as for rosalie saving emmett..that would be cool

Not really a flashback, but maybe a quick shot of her being turned into a vamp in a dark room, when Jasper is telling his/her story.
