Review: Defining Twilight SAT Verbal Study Guide

Defining Twilight Review SAT Preparing for the SAT and other standardized tests like the ACT and SSAT can be one of the most stressful rites of passage a student can go through.

Brian Leaf’s Defining Twilight hopes to ease the preparation for the verbal portion of these tests by guiding Twilight fans through the memorization of more than 600 vocabulary words found in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight. Does it succeed in helping with test preparation? We read through a pre-release review copy of the guide in order to find out. Read on to see what we discovered.

In each of the 40 sections of the guide, a group of words from Twilight is given. The first step is to look up the word on the page indicated in Twilight and write down your best guess for the definition of the word based on existing knowledge and context clues. Next, the answer is checked against the provided definition for each word.

The definitions that Brian Leaf provides offer additional tips on how to memorize the word by noting word clues like prefixes, suffixes, word origins and synonyms. The level of the vocabulary in the Twilight series never reaches the same difficulty as the most challenging vocabulary that is found on the SAT, so this is a welcome addition as these clues can help to learn other more advanced words that are not in this tome. This information helps expand the usefulness of this book far beyond the 600 words included from the Twilight universe.

After checking your definition, a group of multiple-choice quiz drills that include SAT-style questions like synonyms, analogies and sentence completions are done in order to reinforce your memorization of the word. These drills also help with becoming acclimated to the peculiar style of questions on the SAT. An important part of SAT preparation is getting used to how questions are asked on the test.

After every five sections there is a quiz which tests what the student has learned. There are eight of these summary quizzes as well as two additional summary quizzes at the midpoint and end of the book.

Defining Twilight Review Verdict VERDICT: [4/5 Stars]

Brian Leaf’s Defining Twilight offers a unique method of SAT prep for Twilighters by building on knowledge of a novel that fans are already familiar with. It won’t be the only study guide you’ll use to prepare for the SAT–the vocabulary in Twilight is not advanced enough–but it’s the most inviting and fun SAT study guide a Twilight fan will find. At a mere $10, Defining Twilight is a must-buy for any Twilight fan that is preparing to take the SAT, ACT, SSAT or GED.

  • There is absolutely no way I would be able to study with this book. Reading about Twilight=thinking about Rob=thinking about unicorns=mind in the gutter=not concentrating on studying at all.

Thank the Lord, those days of SATs are over!!! :)
  • raindrops_on_roses
wow... this'll help alot, but like the first comment, i'll probably continue on reading rather than stopping at the word you're supposed to be 'defining'
  • I wish there was a 'Defining Twilight- GMAT Verbal Study'.

I wonder if we can manipulate the Twilight saga into data analysis questions?

My child split her head open and had to have it glued back together.
  • Patience Isn't My Specialty
    OMG Scarlet! Is she ok?????
  • ScarletI *Team Pea Coat!!!*
Yes. She’s ok now. Thank the Lord she has a high threshold to pain. She
didn’t like having her head held down though…she screamed bloody murder
during that portion of the visit.

Hallelujah this visit was much shorter than the last one (I think it only
took them 35 minutes) I don’t know that she could have handled another 6
    hour wait.

I’m just praying she doesn’t pull the glue off…if she does they’ll have to
put in stitches. lol…the glue gives her Frankenstein eyebrows.
  • Patience Isn't My Specialty
Aw Scarlet :( How old is she? I hope she heals fast.

    **drops out of tree**

    WTF are you doing, BFF?!??!?!

    **remembers that we share**

    oh....well, here....

    **pulls BFF's skirt shorter**
he like alot of skin showing...

Oh, and put some Essence of Vamp on to cover wolf smell...I will keep lookout for other vamp girls...HURRY!!
  • Patience Isn't My Specialty
    *head snaps up*
    BFF!!!!!

I'm sorry! I'm bored! I need someone to attack me!!!

    *looks down at skirt*
Yes! It does look better that way!

I ran out of Vamp Essence! I used it all when I was jumping the fence to get with Emmet...

Do you still have the key I gave you? I haven't seen you over at the rez trying to harass my wolfpack!
  • ItsRobert_Effing_Pattinson
Of course I still have the key!!

But, there have not been any wolf posts that really ignite the dirty. gutter-driven side of my brain...so I have been good and stayed on my own side for a while.

I cannot wait until the next wolf post though, I am hoping that it is a good one - preferrably a shirtless one that I can sink my teeth into, rub my tongue all over and grope shamelessly...

And no worries on the attack...it is sure to come...and since you want it to happen, while you are being attacked, I will keep Pattinson busy...**puts on my own short skirt and tight shirt**

    lol
  • Patience Isn't My Specialty
    Muahahah!
Yes! Yes! Go inside and entertain Edward while I have some fun here with rpattz!

About lack of wolf posts...TELL ME ABOUT IT!!!!!! Argh!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so dry here! I need to see my men! It's been awhile!

I'm not sure you will be able to sink your teeth into any other them, because the post will be flooded with wild wolf girls, shamwows and lots of cold water splashing around!
Not to mention all the howling. I doubt you will enjoy any of that!

    Lol
  • ItsRobert_Effing_Pattinson
Eh...since you will all be so distracted, I think I plan on taking full advantage of that situation and just grope and lick to my little hearts content!!

    LOL

Besides, I know how much you wolf-girls love it when I jump the fence and come over to visit. LOL
  • Patience Isn't My Specialty
hahah! Yes we LOVE it! ahaha
Actually I do..and I love to see the chaos you cause doing so! Hahah

I’ll do you a favor…when the post comes out, I’ll cover for you so that you can get one lick or two! *winks*
  • ItsRobert_Effing_Pattinson
    Ha!!

    Hell Yes!! Thanks, BFF!!!

    **blows kisses**

Now, dont let me distract you from your fighting any further... I have to go distract Pattinson for you...

    lol
  • ScarletI *Team Pea Coat!!!*
    *reads Effing's "tight shirt" aloud*

    "Robsten 4 ever"

    hmmmmmm....interesting choice

    *runs off laughing*

    Effing loves Robsten!

    Effing loves Robsten!

    Effing loves Robsten!
  • ItsRobert_Effing_Pattinson
Well, I had to put a shirt on that he will get angry about and rip it off of me...I like it rough...

So, it is not that I love Robsten...I love the angry s*x it will get me....LOL
  • ScarletI *Team Pea Coat!!!*
Oh...well...if its ANGRY you want...here wear this.

*hands Effing a "I luv Effron" shirt*

Careful though...it may burn your skin.

or maybe you want my "Niki is my hero" shirt.
  • ItsRobert_Effing_Pattinson
**looks at shirt Scarlet give me**

    WTF??

    **pukes all over shirt**

no, no....that will NEVER happen...I want angry, not dry heaving...

    LOL
  • ScarletI *Team Pea Coat!!!*
    LMAO!!!

    ok...how about this one...

*gives Effing my "Knick-Knack Pattz-ie wack, give the man a BONE" shirt.

It may not make him angry though.

    And I WANT IT BACK!
  • ItsRobert_Effing_Pattinson
nope...I am sure the Robsten will be the best shirt for the job...

    Thanks though...LOL
  • bean_Bad 2 the RathBone[Mar09]
You can do an exam on Twilight?!

Question 1: Team Edward or Team Jacob? Please back up your answer with evidence from the text.

Question 2: Stephenie Meyer has created the hottest vampire family ever. Discuss.

Question 3: Is this the easiest exam you have ever taken?
  • Mr_Darcy
Where was this exam when I was in school?
  • rpattz_dreamer(TeamRobsBeanie)
I know, don't think that would ever happen in England we are stuck with the classics (don't get me wrong i love the classics as well)

That would be one exam I could easily get top marks in!
  • bean_Bad 2 the RathBone[Mar09]
    Flippin' UL curriculum! *stomps foot*

Having said that, I wouldn't like to have to make notes in my copy of Twilight...

Teacher: "Miss Bean, did you note that down?"
    Me: "Yes miss"

*doodles 'I <3 Jasper' in margin*
  • NaeskiiDoodle
    SAT's, Twilight... SAT'S, Twilight!

    Such an awesome combination!

Hey IndiesR, I havent spoken to you in ages!! How are you?
  • MB . Team Slade Brigade 3/09
i'm afraid i would start out with good intentions and end up just re-reading the novel again and masking it as "studying". thankfully, i've graduated college and the SAT's are behind me! lol
  • lol i'm so over sats
  • Mr_Darcy
I was actually just thinking, if Twilight or other books like it were on literature curriculums I'll bet a lot of students would do a lot better, or at least read the material.
  • 2 years ago, my 9th grade teacher was talking about Twilight and it drove me NUTS when she pronounced Stephenie Meyer's name as Stephenie Mayor.
As in, the mayor of a city or town or whatever.
  • dracodarling
Actually, it was in my Modern Literature course that I discovered Twilight. We had to read Harry Potter, Twilight, The Notebook, and a few other pieces of literature during the last twenty years. I picked up Twilight over two years ago and never turned back.

*raises a glass to her professor*
  • Mr_Darcy
    *standing ovation for draco's professor*

Wow. I'm very glad for you! That's awesome. Were you an English major or
was that an elective if I may ask?
  • dracodarling
English and Elementary Education.. I am a teacher now. :-) I took it as one of my English Literature electives. A requirement to obtain a course pertaining to contemporary literature and I chose this professor because I heard he was good.. yeah.. my professor was a "HE".. a man introduced me to Twilight then I discovered my older brother was reading the books too. :-)
  • Mr_Darcy
    Very cool.

That's pretty spectacular about your professor. I've always maintained that
while there are some books out there that really do alienate men, Twilight
isn't one of them, and just because it is widely embraced by women does not
mean that men cannot enjoy them or learn from them. (As you can probably
tell from my profile name I'm not afraid of literature just because it is
popular among women, and I think my life is better for it.)
  • dracodarling
You need to talk to my hubby. LOL

*Gladly embraces all fans of Twilight*
    *hugs*

And oh Mr. Darcy, you truly are one of a kind.. ;-) (read that one too)
  • bean_Bad 2 the RathBone[Mar09]
I was speaking with some friends recently who hadn't read anything in years until they started reading the Twilight saga. I love it when books are so good that they reignite people's love of reading. :)

BTW Mr Darcy, I miss your old av pic.... :(
  • marie_C - Team switz
i have 19 years old and i can tell you that twilight was my first true reading. i didn't even read the books that teachers give me in school, i just went to wikipedia but after that now i can say that i am a reader, of course if it is a entertaining book.
  • Mr_Darcy
He'll be back. I fursploded over the weekend (don't ask, it got messy) and
    haven't found a change of clothes yet. : )
  • bean_Bad 2 the RathBone[Mar09]
    Phew! Good to hear...

*skips off to watch the lake scene on YouTube til Mr Darcy's proper av pic returns*
  • MB . Team Slade Brigade 3/09
i think some schools are starting to get the hint and adding it to the syllabus. you could easily go over all four books in a year. if it were an all girls school, you could probably do them all in one semester! i think the teachers would get an influx of interest and discussions like they've never seen before!
  • Kaleb -.-.- Shiny New Toy
haha well i'm a guy and i think i could pull off all 4 as curriculum in one quarter. hmm...i wonder if there are twilight book clubs where people could meet and have discussions. that would be awesome
  • welcome to newmoonmovie.org twi-guy its really cool to talk to a twi-guy on this site :D welcome again
  • Kaleb -.-.- Shiny New Toy
why thank you lol. i get on here all the time but i just recently started commenting. there's so many girls on here i thought a guys opinion may be helpful sometimes : ) and thanks again
  • Mr_Darcy
    Hey Kaleb

It's great to have another guy on here. Thanks for joining! (It gets a little overwhelming sometimes being one of so few male commenters)

    Hope to see you around!
  • Kaleb -.-.- Shiny New Toy
Yes i can imagine being overwhelmed by so many intelligent women! Almost intimidating sometimes i bet haha. Anyway, thanks for the warm welcome and i too hope to see you around!
  • MB . Team Slade Brigade 3/09
wow! it's a twi-guy! i like the name! i don't think i've talked to a guy on here! welcome--and feel free to get an avatar so we can see your face! lol. according to your name, it should be your favorite pic of bella. ;)
  • Mr_Darcy
I beg your pardon? Never talked to a guy on here? What am I a duck? LOL. : )
  • MB . Team Slade Brigade 3/09
oops! i'm so sorry, mr darcy! notice i said "i don't think" for fear of forgetting someone! so please accept my apologies! :)
  • Mr_Darcy
Haha, no worries. I was just being facetious. Being a guy on here is quite
a rarity as I understand, so I am in no way offended when people don't
expect that right off the bat. : )
  • Kaleb -.-.- Shiny New Toy
lol yeah i get on here like a thousand times a day and i never see any guys comment so i was pretty hesitant to say anything haha.

thanks for the welcome and i'll get right on that avatar lol.
  • Fevs94
yah but whenever we get given books and have to study them we end up hating them!!! grrrrr i actually cant stand romeo n juliet anymore after disecting it a few years ago and all the others they7 shove in our faces
twilight should never become school work.... it would ruin it for so many
then again our teacher sucked and needed anger manegment classes badly!! so mbe im biased
  • bean_Bad 2 the RathBone[Mar09]
That's true! Sometimes when you over-analyse books they lose their enjoyment.

It was, ahem, a while since I was in school and I know I've re-read and enjoyed books that I HATED when forced to study them at school.
  • Fevs94
hahaha maybe when im as old as you ill b able to read them without hearing my teacher going....... repetition... ooo and thats a simile ... o dont forget onomatopoeia!!!! ...... and you have to right why.....to emphasize of course blah blah blah
*bangs head on table several times trying to erase form memory*
  • Mr_Darcy
*imagining Team Edward/Team Jacob fights in an all-girls literature class*

Yep. Class discussions. This could get fun.

But you're absolutely right. And I'm sure the teachers would enjoy the
    interest.
  • IndiesR
    YAY!!! New post! hahaha
  • rpattz_dreamer(TeamRobsBeanie)
Yes new post but *shock* I don't have anything to say about this story i left school 10 years ago and would never want to go back!
Lucky i finished university 6 years ago and no exams since!
  • Well_Good_Morning_Rob
You said it, girl. I should probably be working on a Masters but... I just don't want to. Lol!
  • IndiesR
I know exactly how you feel...hahaha, me too.
  • rpattz_dreamer(TeamRobsBeanie)
    Third?
  • Mr_Darcy
    Second!
  • congrats on second!
  • Mr_Darcy
    Thanks!

    Totally out of left field....
I just noticed the ad for Blue Foundation's album in the upper-right corner.

*pencils down name of album to buy later*

Eyes on Fire rocked my world! But the sound of Scandinavian vocalists
usually hits me pretty hard (also big fan of Emiliana Torrini)

Oh, and is that offer of the change-of-clothes-backpack from a couple weeks
ago still good? I seem to have shredded mine when this avatar burst out,
and Colin Firth just doesn't want to walk around like that. It offends his
    Victorian sensibilities.
  • The advertisement mind games are working on you! At least you want to purchase something that is still considered a 'normal' purchase (never heard of Blue Foundation), I keep seeing the stupid New Moon t-shirt available 'only at Hot Topic'. The more I see it, the more I tell myself I want one. Oh, the subliminal messages!

    change of clothes backpack?

    *looks around secretly*

*opens up trench coat to show mr. darcy numerous clothing attires for sale*

so, uh, I have small, medium, large.. what's your neck size.. pant sizes range from (us) 30-44, socks, shoes- you need it, i've got it!

    LMAO
  • Mr_Darcy
    Ah, thank you very much.

    *takes clothing in teeth*

*moves off to find appropriate place to un-phase*

And those ads really do get into your head....seeing them all the time does
    a mind job on you.

Though the one with the blonde with the ridiculous expression on her face
and the white lamb t-shirt with the fang marks on the shoulder just makes me
think of those fans that prick their necks and ask rob to lick them.....ew.

Blue foundation is one of the bands on the Twilight soundtrack. They're
Danish. Their song Eyes on Fire got only about 2 seconds of playtime in the
movie (when Bella wants to confront Edward after her first day of school but
he never shows up), but the whole song is electrifying.
  • Mr. Darcy, you have become my favorite twi-guy.

I agree with the blonde and white lamb t-shirt- *shudders*

I had no idea that Blue Foundation was the song playing when Bella confronts Edward- I must look into the CD now!

good luck un-phasing- 4TW was asking about you in the Rob sitting down post- meet you there!
  • ItsRobert_Effing_Pattinson
    Congrats on second, Mr. Darcy...
  • Mr_Darcy
    Thanks Effing!

And how are you this fine day?
  • ItsRobert_Effing_Pattinson
    Oh, well, just fantastic...

I only got 4 hours of sleep because for some reason, my body did not feel the need to sleep in today, I did not get my coffee, and my internet was out for a while...

On the brighter side of things, there was a Pattinson post that had him looking HOTTER than usual, got to talk to 4tW this morning, and I have yet to be called a name through another round of "Random Acts of Rudeness"....so, considering everything, it is a good day! lol

    How about yourself?
  • Mr_Darcy
Well I'm very glad that the lows are not detracting from the highs.

I'm doing quite well. Chasing squirrels and PIMSY and otherwise
participating in "Random Acts of Silliness" I'm in a surprisingly good
mood for a Monday, and I can't even credit chemical interference.

I seem to be taking my canine avatar quite literally today. : )
  • Patience Isn't My Specialty
*purrs as she reads 'chasing squirrels AND PIMSY'*

Mr. Darcy! *wiggles eyebrows* and I felt like I was the one doing all the chasing!!!!! *sly smile*

    hahahah
  • Mr_Darcy
    No, no.

You only THOUGHT you were chasing. : )

    My game worked hahaha!!

    *continues to run in circles*

And speaking of which when one runs in circles who is really chasing who?
    Probably both : )
  • whereismyedward
first! this is kinda funny... but i must say probably THE most fun way of studying EVER! wish we did SATs in england lol... well not really, but i just want to study twilight. the only thing i could defs get an A++++ in!! LOL!
  • dracodarling
Congrats!! and you don't want the SATs!! Although, I have heard about the UK standardized testing is painstaking too.
  • whereismyedward
    thanks!
ugh yeah we have A levels and trust me, they're not fun... just done my first years worth of exams and they were hell!! but i have heard sats are just as awful :/:/
why do we have to be put through these exams WHYYY?!?!
*realises you can now be tested on twilight*
THE WORLD IS CHANGING FOR THE BETTER!!!!!!!! :D
  • dracodarling
I teach 4th and 5th grade in the USA and the standardized testing has grown to the point the students are only learning tests. I heard the UK was attempting to lessen the tests there. Many teachers here would like for this same action to be done here.

Exams in secondary or post secondary? I took my GRE (graduate school) last year but it was nothing compared to the SAT, Praxis I and II.

*thinks she would love to take the Twilight SAT just for the fun of it*
  • ScarletI *Team Pea Coat!!!*
    Conga-rats!!!

    WOOO HOOO!!
