I cringe whenever I hear that spider-monkey line.

I was dragged to see the movie before I ever heard of the books and thought it was eh, alright.

Read the books afterward and then realized how much better the movie could have been.

Now that a good budget is in place, the next three have a lot to live up to.

Sad thing is, Spider Monkey line was best she could come up with. (and yes, she has even stated she wrote that line because the script writers went on strike.. she stated she wrote many lines in the movie)

I was the same.
My sister made my mom and I watch it, whilst watching it I thought it was a neat idea, but not a great movie (I was bored at the 30 minutes of screen shots she did. LaMe!) But then I read the book, and I started to picture my own scenes.. So then I thought I loved the movie, went and bought it, watched it again and became even more disappointed. I love the book! If they put that into a movie, it would make so much money!
What CH did was take the IDEA of Twilight, contort it to make it her own, film it, slap the Twilight title on it to make money and then claimed all the glory.
In reality all she did was steal someone elses idea and butcher their book!

Yeah, I don't normally stoop to smack-talking about people I don't know, but just listening to her talk like a stoner on the movie commentary annoyed me to no end. And all of the interviews since then where she's "acknowledging" her messiah-like abilties in directing have kind of sealed the deal for me.

OK I understand she had no money to speak of, and I understand that MR didn't do a particularly good job with the script but, I saw the film before knowing anything about the books or the story, I left thinking ..... er what?????

Then read the books and notice the amount of stuff missing like the meadow conversation, the convo by the truck on the way home, the way she finds out about Edward and a heck of a lot more the film could have done with 40 mins more and be better of because of it.

ok try to understand this, we are giving her credit for the cast, but just try to understand that you don't need a huge budget to do a good movie, there are so many good movies like the notebook that does not need a huge budget, or hp movies that are really long books too and the movies are great which means that they can condense long books and the movies can end up been great.

I can't believe this woman is actually taking credit for the sucess of Twilight. She RUINED the movie, seriously. It's all thanks to the wonderful book and cast that Twilight the movie has reached this amount of fame. And the fans, of course.

Its really hard to make a movie good though without a good director, seriously, they tell the actors what way to say things, how to move, where the shot is, how it looks... They make the movie, the actors just do as they are told.

She didn't write the script, which I'll admit was lacking in parts, but Twilight is a good movie for such a slim budget - I don't see how you can seperate CH from that work - its her movie!!

There were some really good scenes she could have picked. Still, she insisted on having the "butt crack santa" part in.

That is what I don't get, people on here (and I think your comment was tame in comparison) are so angry about her, even some calling her names, and saying things like "she ruined our movie" which is ridiculous... she made Twilight. It has CH written all over it.

The butt crack santa is a terrible line, Melissa Rosenberg should not be writing movies, but the scene showed how long it has been since Bella and Charlie had any proper family time together. Remember we couldn't hear Bella thinking all the time as we could in the book.

I was disappointed that they left out the finger biting scene thats in the extras but I suppose they needed to... it was a "nothing" scene anyway, as in it didn't add to the story...!

Robert Pattinson deserves more credit than her, seriously. The only reason I (and many others) kept watching it over and over again was because of him. I'm not kidding LOL.

And I do agree with you on many parts.. It is hard to be a producer. But it really bugs me that she keeps taking credit for all the sucess.

I'm nearly sure it was a guy called Wyck Godfrey who was the producer, and he would have hired Catherine Hardwick. The thing about her taking credit though, she IS the director so it'd be like you taking a photo that won, lets say, the worlds best photo prize and people saying "nah she is crap it was just a nice flower"

Yeah, but if it wasn't for the flower I wouldn't have won the prize. So, If it wasn't for the book she would probably be wherever she was before.

With this amazing story it's almost impossible to fail. She knew she was safe no matter what. And that's why she took all the risks with some of her stupid lines.

We could discuss this for hours and still be where we are right now. We all have different opinions. I just shared mine and I'm still sticking with it.

the good things i have to say about CH and Twilight
1) Robert Pattinson being cast as Edward. I liked Rob first BEFORE ever seeing him as Edward bc I wasn't interested in the books till January...
2) The soundtrack

Catherine Hardwicke is the REASON Twilight was so good. SHE picked the cast, designers, composer, settings, shots, cinematographer, script. Rob Pattinson would still be in oblivion if not for Catherine. By Rob's own admission, before Twilight, he was "un-hireable."

Do you understand that film is a director's medium? Let's say you've written a script called The Birds and three directors want to make it: John Doe, Jane Smith and Alfred Hitchcock. You're going to have 3 DIFFERENT movies so it TOTALLY depends on the director.

Catherine should absolutely be credited with the success of the movie Twilight. SHE cast Kristen, Rob, Ashley, etc. etc. SHE chose the scenes, shots, edits, sound, music, costumes, etc. etc. Another director would have chosen a different cast, composer, design, shots, etc.

If anyone other than Steven Spielberg had made Jaws, it wouldn't be the film it is. If Martin Scorsese hadn't direct Raging Bull, or David Lean Lawrence of Arabia, those films wouldn't be the masterpieces they are. The director is the one who should absolutely be praised for a film's success which is why it's called "a director's medium." So give Catherine her due.

I have to say I feel really strongly about the negative comments about CH on here. She is accused of this, that and the other, yet you all love the movie she made??? One line does not a bad movie make, and she didn't write the script so isn't really responsible for that either. The story had to be adapted, I know everyone understands that the time frame means things have to be crammed together and the story concentrated, so what exactly is the problem?

I loved it. The movie. I loved the cast (thanks CH) the easy going indie vibe (thanks CH) the direction - that Edward Face!!! (THANK YOU CH)

I wonder do you realise how much of a movie is its director, its pretty much 90%... a great script can be ruined by a bad director, and a bad actor can be made great, every little move an actor makes is DIRECTED.

If you love the movie, you cannot hate her - she made it.

Absolutely and completely respect your opinion, and for commenting on a person that none of us have actually ever met, yes, we do perhaps step over a line now and then.
I actually didn't really have a strong postitive or negative opinion of Twilight after I saw it, having not read the books at that point. After I read the books, and loved them, I hung on every word in the movie looking for important things and cringing when other things were inserted that didn't seem to belong.
I don't hate Catherine Hardwick, but in listening to her commentary on the Dvd it's a personal pet peeve of mine when people speak either like they're high, or are trying to sound 20 years younger than they are. She is probably a very intelligent person, but in my opinion, isn't always successful in portraying herself as one. I think there's also a general opinion by folks here that some humilty is lacking in her interviews.
Again, it is too easy to jump on the bashing bandwagon, and maybe I shouldn't speak for others here, but what we've seen of her personality in interviews does rub a lot of us the wrong way. We are all passionate about the books and the movies and want them to be as good as they possibly can.

I think, and I don't want to sound patronising, that the people who bash her don't really have a good idea what exactly a director does. I think they imagine the director shouts action and then the actors take over, but it is a rare actor who needs no direction and most of them need a lot!!!

I have worked on a movie before and I was amazed how much work the director does, the actors are puppets really for his vision... I doubt Twilight was any different.

It's a pity that so many people who loved the movie blame her for things out of her control, obviously she couldnt have every single thing in the movie, she needed to tell a complete story, and different bits are important to different people.

I just think its a shame. She brought us Robsten!! I think she should be deified!!

Im not just bashing her, MR did a bad script, and CH adapted to it but I think she could of made changes and did tons better. good casting and soundtrack but overall when I saw twilight I was crushed! I like it because it's Twilight , there was some good scenes, like the baseball scene and fight scene. But if i wasn't a twilight fan i would have went "man..that kinda sucked"

I dont see why everyone gives out about her! I thought she did a good job with Twilight for such a small budget! I do think NewMoon will be much better though!!! I cant wait to see it!

Oh man! is it just me or does anyone else really not like her? she is so delusional and crazy and quite honestly Twilight could of been better she made the movie from more of a fan perspective that a directer. honestly the only thing she got right was chosing the cast but besides that the movie was not that great!

I think the movie could have been way better too but I like some of her other movies too. I think it's annoying but kind of funny the way she acts crazy. But I definitely wanted to smack her during the whole commentary.

I liked how Catherine got people who didn't know her about what they thought of the script. This way, people could give her their honest opinion without hurting her feelings because they don't know her. The sad thing is that even though Catherine got the opinions of others, Twilight wasn't that great. Could have the script for Twilight have been that crappy? Because honestly, Twilight was crappy. It could have been so much better.

And, Twilight wasn't successful because of the script or because of Catherine Hardwicke. Twilight already have a huge @$$ fan base and that's what made the movie successful. I would have watched it even if it was the worse movie ever!

I think it's time for Catherine to go off the pixie pills. And is it just me or can she never take a good photo?

She should have done Twilight an awesome movie seeing that she is a woman and must know about love but it seems Chris knows MUCH more of it since it seems he can do it a BILLION times better
