Breaking Dawn, the fourth book in the teen-vampire romance series, entered the list at No. 1 on Aug. 2, 2008. Its sales and those of Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse, the first three books, have remained staggering.

This week, Meyer’s novels are Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 7 on USA TODAY’s list.

Rowling, overall, has sold more books than Meyer — her seven-book series about boy wizard Harry Potter has 143 million copies in print in the USA, while Meyer has sold 40 million copies of her four books. But Rowling can’t match Meyer’s control of the list.

Breaking Dawn and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the two authors’ fourth installments, entered the list at No. 1, but Meyer’s series has had more staying power.

The Twilight books have stayed in the list’s top 10 for 52 consecutive weeks. They held the first four spots a total of 13 weeks in the past year.

Rowling’s first four Potter books were top 10 for 13 consecutive weeks, 24 weeks total, for the first year after Goblet’s publication and held the first four spots for two weeks.

Breaking Dawn broke the first-day sales record for publisher Hachette at 1.3 million copies.

Based on aggressive marketing of Meyer’s series, this November’s release of the film version of New Moon and the upcoming holiday gift-buying season, Twilight books could dominate the list well into 2010.

    Ok, let me just say to all you Twilighters - yeah, right. That will never happen. Harry Potter is HARRY POTTER. JK Rowling did 5 years of plotting before starting the first book. She developed hundreds of incredible characters, and invented a whole new world that awoke the imaginations of millions of people. Oh yeah, and she can write.

    Meyer just sat down one day and wrote to wherever her hormones and over-fuelled sex-drive led her, not bothering to think about logic, plotting or character development in the process. And most of her descriptions go like this, "His voice was like melting honey." Firstly, honey doesn't melt, it's already a liquid. Secondly, even if it did melt, it doesn't make a noise. Thirdly, even if it did make a noise, somebody's voice couldn't sound like that, because voices make words! MEYER CAN'T WRITE.

    The utter rubbish that is the Twilight "saga" will never match Harry Potter. JK Rowling's series has characters with actual depth, she did research, she planned each book longer than it took Meyer to slap her dream on paper in the rush to milk the cash cow.
    I'm sorry for those that truly believe Twilight to be a good book. Truly, I do.

    JKR has 7 books, not four. I dont think its fair to compare Breaking Dawn to the Goblet of Fire. Yes the Goblet is the fourth book, but the Harry's story is in the middle there. Maybe it would be more fair to compare Breaking Dawn to The Deathly Hallows

    I've been reading this site for a while now and never comented, but this time I have to...
    I think it's sad how people can even think that Twilight Saga is even at the same level as Harry Potter. C'mon! I've read both sagas more than once, and honestly, Twilight has an interesting concept but the writting is quite simple (in a bad way); even the plot!
    Ok. People like it! It's fine... But they should be able to tell the difference between liking and being good.
    Personally I think Harry Potter made history, Twilight is just a fashion.

Generally, they are both an awesome set of books, some more well written than others [[HARRY POTTER *ehem* =]] but comparing them is so childish, some people like harry potter over twilight, twilight over harry potter etc. END OF! Were all entitled to our own opinion so branding something better than something else is completely bizarre and idiotic! I wish some people would find something better to do in their lives except tell kids what's that twilight is better than harry potter, And B.T.W i loveeeee Harry potter AND BREAKING DAWN SUCKS ASS =D hehe xx

    This article is rather ridiculous. How can you even compare the two? The only thing they have in common is they're both categorized as Fantasy. The writing styles, the plot, the characters... they're completely different.

    But yes, Twilight is eclipsing HP. And you know what an eclipse is? It's a passing event. It comes up strong and dramatic, and then it slowly fades away back to where it was. It might come back for a while, but ultimately it has no staying power over HP. That's what Twilight is, it's the moon that eclipses the sun. It'll always be there, sure, but it's never going to reach the status of HP, the sun.

    Oh, please. This article just oozes *****. You're saying that JK Rowling is an inferior author because Meyer /just happens/ to have all of her books on the bestseller list? I repeat, oh please. Spare me. The Harry Potter series has already made it's mark on history. The only way Twilight will change history is by churning out some of the most ******* insane fans ever. Meyer didn't smash literary records, JK did. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows sold 11 million on it's /first day/, which makes Meyer's 1.3 million pale a little in comparison, don't you think?

    **** and stay out of Harry Potter. Twilight cannot, will not, nor did it ever compare to Harry Potter.

    I believe they will both be around for a long, long time. Though the Twilight saga has set numerous records and I am a die hard fan, IN MY OPINION, I don't think it will ever see the likes of what Harry Potter has reached. I believe it will come very very close, and even top some HP records. But, i must be fair, I am partial more to HP because it was that series that got me to love reading and not see reading books as a bore. If it wasent for HP, I would have never read Twilight.
    I also se Twilight as this generations Harry Potter. I've been hearing stories of kids never wanting to read books until they read or were read Twilight. I believe thats amazing, seeing as thats what Harry Potter did for me.
    Either way, both series rock & I feel very belssed to have been able to enjoy them both. Two great series from Two Great Authors.

    obv, rowling has sold more copies, because they have been ot longer, but most people i know haven't read he books, and they are waiting to see the film, and then buy the book, so she will get some more sales once the films have come out :)
    i really hope she is carrying on with Midnight Sun, i think people will be able to relate to edward a lot more then :)
    dont get me wrong, i love hp, but twilight is kinda a real life love story, apart from we dont have vampires or werewolves :( so we can relate to twilight more :)

    What JK Rowling has created with Harry Potter is our modern day literary classic - evolving right before our very eyes. Potter books are on par with beloved classics like Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "SHERLOCK HOLMES"...time will show this to be true. Twilight, while interesting, is decidely female oriented and moving closer to a plain language Latin novella than the literary classic J K Rowling has written. There's no comparison whatsoever other than each has been born from a book and adapted for the cinematic screen.

    Well, here we go again. Always having to fuel the fire. Everything has to be a competition. It is so irritating. To me the two cannot be compared, they are so different, and written by two authors of very different calibers.

    In no way can Twilight compare to the overall success of HP right now. The second movie hasn't even come out yet.

    I agree that if Stephenie continued to write more books, then it would be possible to get close to HP's success, but for whatever reason she has decided to take a hiatus from Midnight Sun.

    I like both series, obviously I read first HP... And it got me into reading!

    They compare them also because both are female writers, but media doesn't realize that they write about completely diferent things, in spite of both kind of mix the supernatural world with our own.

    Yet, I don't like comparisons... that makes people take sides instead of sharing and having fun :(

    To be honest, I wouldn't say JKR really cares, they are only comparable because of the supernatural content but thats the only similarity... I love Twilight but its not very well written...

    I´ve heard so many times when people ask Rob if he had read mindnight sun and he says that he has...that I imagine that the book must be almost "done"... and when we consider the numbers, let´s count that there are seven books in Harry Potter´s saga, and only four in the twilight saga...five if we count Midnight sun that if Mrs Meyer decides to publish it will absolutely "smash" the sales...that´s the book I´m looking forward to read, it´s so easy to understand Bella, but what about Edward?...how did he feel, when he felt trapped in two desires that colided with each other, how to manage a thing that he could never imagine, could happen to him...and the cullens? This beloved and strange son has no other idea than falling for a human being? not tanya of the Denalis? Oh my god! I would buy it...and then we could count the millions of books...

  • im sorry, i do like twilight, but i doubt its going to be as big as harry potter, you see in this article that they compared meyer's last novel to rowlings fourth novel, though rowling's last novel sold almost tens of millions more than breaking dawn, im sorry, but in the universal appeal, harry potter still dominates twilight

    HP is the better out of them. ive read all the books in both series and the HP books are much better. Firstly there are more books and and there is a much better story in the HP ones. All i have got from all 4 of the twilight books is that its hard for a girl to fall for a vamp. I would rather read a book about magicallly people before i would read the dememted ramblings of a girl called Bella.

    Despite how everyone is gushing over twilight, personally i feel that Stephnie Meyer is no match for JK Rowling herself. There is a distinguished difference between the way both authors pen their stories, and while Rowling's capture people's attention with its content and storylines, Meyer's rely on Edward's 'dazzling' power and the character's popularity.
    Breaking Dawn as of current may have remained on the charts longer than Goblet of Fire, but remember that Goblet of Fire came out in 2000 and the 'Harry Potter' hype only escalated to one similar to that of 'Twilight' later when the 5th book and the 1st movie is released.
    Twilight is almost shallow and too easy to read, though i admit that i do own all four books, just like i own all 7 of HP's.
    Furthermore, book sales are not the absolute means to determine the popularity of either series, and i do hope that people out there stop comparing the two series and bashing the one that they don't prefer, since all of us are entitled to our own opinions.

    It's not surprising... I don't think SM or the publishers expected this to appeal to anyone other than teen girls or 'young adult' girls. When you try to find these books in the library, they're in the young adult section.
    It's went beyond teenagers though.. and I think that's what's causing the staying power... I'm 34, and I love these books. I'm an avid reader, and I seldom read a book twice, but there's something about these that just resonated in me. I agree with some of the people who've said it's like you're SO deep into the character's point of view that it's almost voyeuristic.. like you're reading their fantasy.. but in a good way! lol!
  • I'm 32 and LOVE these books BUT I do recognise they are suited to younger people, purely because the language is a bit... stilted or something. It doesn't mean the story isn't appealing but Stephanie Meyer is not an accomplished writer at all, her language is so "thesauras"

    Its so hard to explain but I love the story and hate the way it has been told!!

    I get what you're saying.. grammatically and structurally, you could tell it was aimed towards the younger readers. I had conversations with my daughter where she asked me if I was surprised by certain parts of the book, and I'd always tell her no.. because it was so textbook so to speak?
    I'm SO not bashing SM or the books.. I loved reading them, perhaps because the story itself is what intrigued me, and the emotions behind it.

    Yeah.. I'm pretty much reconciling with the fact that it's a mid life crisis! It does remind me of being 17, and that guy.. the slightly dangerous guy.. which only made it more exciting.. yeah.
    my "bad guy" used to play drums, and when I was at my daughter's school the other day for something, I heard the band practicing and heard the drums.. my friend just rolled her eyes at me when she caught me smirking.

    I know that Stephenie probably isn't all about the money, but does she realize how much her fans want the saga to continue. The possibilities are endless. Beyond Midnight Sun, she could do something on the Volturi, Jacob and Nessie and even more of Edward and Bella's life together.

    I love both books and films, but I have to admit that harry potter is much more recognized and loved than twilight saga.     Yes Twilight is amazing with the emotional side of it & it draws youu in etc but HP i think is better written & more in depth with a more complex storyline. which makes it interesting. Yes twilights great but its really only about the strain of Bella & edwards relationship.

    My take from her comments on her website is that she is not going to finish Midnight Sun. I can't say as I blame her. After reading her take on what happened I had a bad taste too.

    Honestly - I would like another book about from Edward's perspective or Carlisle's as like a prequel instead of a remake of the a same book in the same perspective. Just from the short glimpse we had of Carlise's life - don't you think it would be great to have a more in-depth description of being human, hunting vampire's - changing into one - dealing with bloodlust (like Bella) learning with the Volturi - meeting the human Edward (maybe before he was sick) - watching over Edward, teaching him - watching how he Edward 'grows into manhood' as a vampire and end with realizing Edward has finally found love that in the hospital when Bella was almost hit by the truck but saved by Edward - and ending the book there?

    It should be good and thick or at least a 2 book prequel (one pre-Edward and one with Edward) that way...

And yeah, if she actually writes Midnight Sun AND the other books from Edward's perspective Harry Potter and J.K.Rowling could say their 1st places and all goodbye. Right? :P

    Hey,nutty.. I totally agree.. I think they touch on totally different aspects but both draw you in, in a different way.
    I totally got lost in H.P. (in the good way) with its whole world and all the stuff that happens but it's like this amazing fantasy world with all these creatures and new things and people popping up.
    Twilight I think spends a lot more time kind of emotionally drawing you into things.. and the world around it, just brings out the ppl and how they react to things more.. it's like sinking into people's emotions and kind of staying there..
    And I'm rambling b/c I'm not explaining it well so I am officially going to upshut.

    I'm doing brilliantly. This one's in Theology. And no......grrrrr.....I didn't miss the Rachelle incident. I was about ready to throw something. Something very dodgy is going on there. I wish her replacement the very best - I don't want her to suffer because of the studio's decision, and of course I wish the best for the film on behalf of our story....but I feel very hurt for Rachelle.

    No one can eclipse what JK Rowlings has done as HP appeals to both sexes all ages hence her selling so many. Stephanie on the the other hand appeals mainly to women of all ages...yes we have some twi-men and I love you guys but in all honesty you guys are very few and far between.

    The fact that Stephanie has remained in the top 10 just shows that the wolves and vamps are in constant demand...HP on the other hand is like a phase ....it came and it went ...but the Twilight Saga will rock forever because we will never grow tired of the Cullens, the Pack or the Volturi!!

    How can you call Harry Potter a phase? Harry Potter has been out for ten years. Harry Potter just broke a record at the movies for midnight showings and Deathly Halllows a book that came out 2 years ago is now #2 on the best seller's list just because it went to paper book.

    Now I have read both series but I like Harry better. Talk to me when Twilight has a theme park built after it or has a exhibit at a museum.

    There is no comparison so people really need to stop it.

  • I like HP i have read them and was one of the folks that pre-ordered the book....my point is more around the fact that everyone was into HP with so many pre-order etc etc that it smashed the records when it came out....BUT it has been out a while now and most people got the books as soon as they were released.

    The saga on the other hand has had a steady growth and will continue to have people buying the books as more people become aware of it...hence it staying it staying in the charts.

    I live in the UK when the books came out it was HP fever every where and I guess it was the same everywhere else. They plug it like there is no tomorrow....yes its a passing phase before the next thing comes along....do you not remember how everyone went crazy when Lord of the Rings was released. I don't mean it as a bad thing...I'm merely saying that Harry Potter fever was phase that takes over when the books came out or when the new movies are released. Twilight on the other hand hasn't had that phenomenon its just a steady paced growth.

    The only parts I've seen her in are the two Shyamalan films, she was very spacy, as those characters called for. But I haven't seen her do anything as direct as Rachelle's portrayal of Victoria. I know she will be compared to Rachelle immediately, and it's probably inevitable but I don't want either of them getting a bunch of negative reviews because of it.

    That's a little project I have been working on in what scraps of spare time I have. It's basically the backstory of why Mr. Darcy is a wolf (Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy, it picks up some time after Pride and Prejudice ends) and what he does about it. I suppose you could call it a fanfic, but Bella and Edward and Jacob are nowhere to be found (as it's mid 19th century)
