oh come on be nice to Catherine! twilight is her first major commercial success of even remotely this magnitude -- its not that shes personally throwing herself in the spotlight either, Twilight's lifespan in the press won't be up until new moons out then we wont hear from her again.

if she hadnt accepted this project we wouldn't have had a movie at all! and we wouldn't have a saga with other directors to compare her to!

LOL, I don't have to be nice to Catherine. While I am grateful that she started off the saga, that woman drives me nuts. Anyone could have come in as the director for this first movie- the story was so good that, despite Catherine's 'chaotic personality' (the actual cast's words, not mine)- Twilight was hugely successful. I thank Stephenie Meyer for writing such an amazing story that hairbrained Catherine couldn't mess it up too bad.

And if you are going to politely scold me, I prefer 'tut tut fan-woman', as I am an ultra awesome twenty-something twi fan! LOL. Other than that, I stand my opinion. You know what they say about opinions- they're like @$$holes. :0)

my opinion also stands: everyone was psyched for Catherine before they saw the movie, just as psyched as they are for Chris before we've seen the movie. Chris will be pulling the same schtick as Catherine in 12 months when we're gearing for eclipse... and everyone will wind up having the same complaints about new moon as they did about twilight. As they will for eclipse. As they will for breaking dawn (however many parts it may have).

at least catherine liked the books & made the movie because she really wanted to film the Story. subsequent directors are doing these movies for the amount of ppl that will see them, not for the books. Catherine did twilight on no budget with unknown actors because she thought it deserved to get made. Chris Weiss and David Slade were not closet twilight freaks hoping desperately to get a directorial bid on this project until raked in the dough.

next year chris will be widely known as THE DIRECTOR OF NEW MOON.... and he will be pimping out that screen-cred to get a job.

My opinion as it stands:
Yes it could have and should have been done better. Regardless of the budget, regardless of the actors, the script makes the movie. If you don't have a good script your movie is going to suck. Catherine as the director has a primary goal of ensuring that the script is suitable for filming. I am sorry but I could point out a number of things that annoyed me about the script, but my best example was the " Tell me about your theories" line in the lunch room. If you never read the book you would have been clueless as to what they were talking about. I know when I saw it in the movie theater I had the pleasure of striking up a pleasant converasation with a woman who never read the books. While the movie was playing she would whisper me questions about this and that, things she didn't understand. Guess what one of her questions was? "Theories, what are they talking about?" She would have never had to ask that question if the script had set it up properly. The budget hurt her big time. I personally believe ( and yeah I am gonna say it ) it was because she was a woman. They screwed her over and she let them. It was just as easy for her to walk away from it.

I can not blame Weitz and Slade for anything for one Catherine Hardwicke couldn't/didn't want to do New Moon. Number two look at what Weitz and Slade were doing before and during the film time of Twilight. Weitz had a full plate two movies plus a bunch of producer work and Slade had one movie and production work. Summit has final say over director and it looks like to me there going the way of the Potter movies instead of staying consistent with one director there gonna use a different director for every film.

Unfortunately, people had higher expectations of Hardwicke and were disappointed, I can see why it's justified. I have seen Wietz's work he is good. I have high expectations of him and I believe they will be fulfilled. If there not fulfilled it will be the same for him. I was never impressed with Hardwicke as a director. She is more notably known for her production design work, which showed in Twilight, but here again the budget killed her.

It's shear stupidity to not milk a cow until the market runs dry. Granted we get tired of it but its their cow and until people stop buying the milk, you keep milking it. It's flat out business.

Hmmm. Maybe this is where there is a difference- I wasn't savvy with the Twilight news before that movie came out. I was never super psyched about Catherine before the movie because I had no idea who was directing it. I had just read the first book, and, after Twilight had been in theaters for a good month, I went and saw the movie. I loved the movie, but was disappointed. I didn't know who directed it at the time.

Then, when I watched the extra features on DVD, this is when CH truly started to drive me nuts. I wish I could have muted her on the commentary. She was way too focused on CGI trees that she forgot to add rain to one scene. So on, and so forth.

As far as Chris Weitz and David Slade milking the Twilight train, only time can tell. Again, I will say that CH did pioneer the way for Twilight, and I am extremely grateful for the cast she's given us, but as an actual person, she drives me nuts.

I look forward to Chris Weitz's face being plastered over every interview in the next few months- because I can actually stand him, and his interviews have always impressed me.

While we are arguing back and forth, I do want to make a point that a) the original comment I made was all in good fun. Don't take anything to heart.

i do love catherine, she does have an energy to her ... its a pro and con at the same time because shes sso out there yet sooooo WAY OUT THERE haha but i love anyone who loves twilight and wants to do it justice to the best of their ability and i do believe that she did it the best she could. MR on the other hand... tsk tsk tsk,

Edi (Laurent) was auditioning for Catherine during a recent TwiTour convention, so I wouldn't be surprised if Edi is cast. He has a Shakespearan background.

He told us that he studied at NYU and was in a number of Shakespearan productions. He mentioned a funny story of bailing out a friend from Juilliard by filling in for sick or hurt actors. He's doing a five part play in New York now - I believe it's for MidSummer's Night's Dream, if I remember right. When I spoke to him at the breakfast we discussed Ashland Oregon's Shakespearean festival - he mentioned getting first job offer there.

i dunno....shakespeare did them pretty slap-dash what with his own costuming budget being nothing and all :) ive got faith. shakespeare's tragedies often have keen moments of humor and that kind of pacing should actually fit CH nicely.

I checked on IMDB - Emile Hirsch is the only cast member listed, so I'm guessing he'll be Hamlet. So apart from Ophelia, the other younger characters in Hamlet are comparitively minor roles.
