Yesterday in Los Angeles, the Billboard Film and TV Music Conference featured a huge presence of New Moon heavy hitters in relation to the score and soundtrack of the movie.
Moon from Letters to Twilight graciously served as our guest reporter to bring you this amazing information from the conference–including a very brief exclusive interview with New Moon director Chris Weitz himself!
The conference featured two Twilight New Moon themed panels. One discussing the soundtrack success featuring New Moon soundtrack music supervisor Alex Patsavas, a VP from Atlantic Records and Paul Katz, music consultant and uppity up at Summit Entertainment.
The other New Moon themed panel was “A Conversation with a Director and Composer” featuring Chris Weitz and Alexandre Desplat who discussed New Moon and its score and music for a hour. Now, this was some hardcore discussion regarding the composition of the score, influences how they began the process, etc. It was NOT a panel where they discussed Robsten or anything about the actors other than what pertained to the topic of the New Moon score.
I’ll be writing a more in depth post in the next few days reviewing both panels in more depth but for today I’ll give you a quick overview of some juicy tidbits from Chris’s panel and what WE, yes WE I met the man himself talked about after the panel. Hang on kiddies, we’ll get there but first some of what Chris and Alexandre discussed:
- There were themes (musical) created for for each character. IE one for Bella, one for Bella and Edward, one for Jacob
- To reflect the confusion in Bella’s mind after Edward leaves, at times the “Edward” and “Jacob” themes are “blurred” together to help created “subliminal confusion” in her mind
- Jacob’s “theme” features electric guitar. Alexandre used a guitar that sounded very similar to an Indian sitar and Chris jokingly reminded him that Jacob is Native (Indian) American not Indian from India
- The score will not featuring any of Carter Burwell’s score. (I’ll expound more on this decision in a later post)
- And the most important info: Chris wore a lot of olive and tan. He was in full on DILF mode with cargo pants, striped socks (i love a good sock!), some sort of olive sweater and a leather man purse. Work it Chris, WORK IT!
Also, Moon had the chance to meet Chris Weitz face-to-face for a few brief moments, where she reveals:
After I explained who I was I thanked him for being part of the panel and proceeded to tell him that we as a fandom wanted to thank him for doing such an outstanding job with New Moon and that from the looks of things on November 2oth we were going to love the final film. Then I asked what he was most excited for fans to see in the movie. He answered that he wanted us to hear the rest of the score (yea, yea panel’s over pal, give us the real answers!) since we hadn’t gotten to hear much and I said that we heard “The Meadow” and that I thought Alexandre’s song “The Meadow” was beautiful and that some of the fans had expressed that they thought “Bella’s Lullaby” should have been more like “The Meadow” that the song was that great. His eyes lit up and pretty much said “really!? I’ve heard some good things from the fans” and I asked him if he went online and read what the fans were saying or if he watched any reaction videos and he said that he did and that everything he’d heard was positive and that he was really excited about our reactions and then went on to say most of all he really couldn’t wait for us to see the ENTIRE movie and not just clips and leaks. I jumped in and asked him what he thought about all the leaks and spoiler clips that people were seeing online and on TV shows and if he liked them. Chris told me that “Ya know what, I really believe less is more” and that he wished there weren’t so many clips out for people to see until the big day. I told him I felt the same way and couldn’t wait to enjoy the full film.

Hi, Amanda! Yes, we do love Chris! He really has brought us something special. I love his dedication to New Moon. He has such a respect for the characters and the story. He wants to see it come alive. From the colors to the music he seems to bring a cohesive feel to the whole movie that makes me so hopeful that it is going to be phenomenal!
Yes, I can't wait for NEW MOON the score to come out on Nov.24th. I think they should have released it early too…I absolutely love Twilight the movie score, i think its beautiful and I listen to it often. From what I hear so far “the meadow” by Alexander Deslat..the music is going to be beautiful also, I CAN”T WAIT!!!

This is an EPIC story! It’s deserves an EPIC score. Some don’t seem to realize the impact music makes on the tone, emotion, and “memorability” of a story!
Look at some of the most famous and memorable movies in film history…what do they ALL have in common? And incredible score! When you think of Star Wars you hear both heroic theme and the ominous hymn in your head. Titanic?..the haunting melodies that allowed us to connect to fictional and historical tragedy. Psycho?….how many of us have even gotten into a shower and heard the “eek eeek eeek eek” ringing in our ears?
I don’t know about the rest of you…but ten years down the road…I WANT to be in a store, or an elevator, or the dentist chair and hear familiar notes and think “That’s Edwards theme!”
Music is a powerful, wonderful thing that connects us in a way no other single entity can. EDWARD understood that, and I’m SO elated that our incredible director and this accomplished composer have made Edward’s knowledge and passion a reality.

Wow, I'm really impressed by all these little details they told, for example about mixing Edward's and Jacob's themes when Edward has left, as a way of portraying Bella's confusion (although, I feel like maybe she's not really confused about those two until Eclipse, but hale, I don't care, the movie seems to be focusing more on the love triangle in New Moon, so then be it =)). Anyway, those kind of things are the really subtle things that we as an audience might not notice, but it completes the experience somehow. I'm really impressed with Chris Weitz, and from what I've heard from the score, Alexandre Desplat is doing an emazing job!
Really exited to see the entire movie soon and hear how Desplat's beautiful music makes Chris' beautiful movie even more heartbreaking! I think it will be wonderful!!

Wow, Scarlet, you really said it well!! I was thinking of Titanic as an example as well, that music (along with the score from Braveheart, by James Horner both of them) is one of my absolute favourites! Musíc plays such a big part of a movie, and the Titanic score can actually make my cry, just by listening to the music. That's what I want for New moon aswell! The music should transport us back to that magical place which we visit when seeing the movie, and after hearing “the meadow”, I have high hopes that Alexandre Desplat will be able to live up to our expectations.
I won't listen to anything else from the score until after I've seen the movie, because I really want to conect the music to the movie, not seeing the movie and think, “Oh I heard that music on my ipod when I was on the subway on my way to work” =P

She´s not confused about her feelings for Edward until the moment whe Jacob is going to battle and says that maybe he should be killed in the battle and there won´t be no problems…and Bella going crazy because she doesnt want him to be killed and tell him to kiss her, after the second kiss, because in the first she´s quite not responded until he made her mad and she with anger responded and realised that….
Because in one of the trainings and while Jake was a wolf and bella lying on him and touching his fur…she decided that she felt ready to be a Cullen….not thinking about Jake in that sense at all….but well if it sells, it´s ok and the music is nice the better…

I found these little quotes about the soundtrack as well….
According to Patsavas, “the reason why the music on this (soundtrack) fits so well is because Chris Weitz sat down with the artists telling them how he would like the scenes to feel.”
Many fans were disappointed to find out that Robert Pattinson ( who plays Edward Cullen in the series) would not be contributing to this soundtrack, as previously on “Twilight”. While the producers enjoyed working with Pattinson on the first film and debuting his musical talents via mainstream, the “Twilight Saga” actor opted out of this soundtrack to focus on his acting career and the success of the movie series. This won't stop our trio of the films' movie producers, as they intend to kindly ask Pattinson to contribute to the next two movies in the series ( fingers crossed!).
