I hate the fact that Bella never got to voice what she thought were good ideas, because they were good ideas even though it would ean no Cullens =( but it was like Edward was jus not even near her and then hes all getting back to normal all of a sudden before he leaves. I also hate that when he left it was like Bella didnt even fight o speak up or cry or scream because I understand after he said he didn't want her it was never i her head that he should love her but before that it made no sense and there was no way in hell i would have let him go, i know she was num and how could Edward do that to her too! i know i know he had to he's Edward but i doubt h even thought of anything else and it's so upsetting that Alice didnt get to say goodbye this chapter was aheartwrenching reaization and it makes me so depressed this book that i cant put it down until edward comes back because its so real it makes you feel like your literally bella and those emotions are the ones that you feel, they are sooooo reall that is why i love stephenie meyer. and just for new moon might have switched over to team jacob because taylor lautner just makes everyone love him, but i so wouldve picke edward also, but i might pick taylor over rob anyday sorry but there is no comparison.

there are a couple of things i had totally forgotten about this chapter
first of all i completely forgot that edward offered to take the photos to send to renee (any guesses why??? sorry, i know that i shouldn't even try to bring humour to this chapter)
and that sam actually finds bella in his wolf form and then comes back normally
i also forgot how depressing this chapter is, i guess edward was kind of right when he said time heals all wounds

But what I'm trying to say is that everyone knows...in a sane, logic mind, that if there are 4 books to this, and at the beginning of the second he leaves, then obviously the story won't be able to go on without him.

It's only obvious that he comes back in the same book, because you can't just erase a main character like that...

So, like...please...for the 5th one...Keep it real. You do your job good, but i just wanna ask you to be more litterate about your articles.

well i definitly know for a fact that everyone had to have known that he was coming back if they read it after eclipse was published or after stephenie myer said that eclipse would be made, but it still bothers us that he left and the way he did it. its heartwrenching to everyone and shocking to everyone because of the way SM gets so into detal and emotions i feel like this is happning to me every time i read it so i think thats what they mean and even if theyre is 4 books its just shocking that he leaves especially cause your like whatt! all he did was swear to he he loves her and he leaves her.

ps they do a fantastic job at this taking all the time out to post multiple times a day and they are literate and it makes perfect sense for everyone to be mad and upset and unbelieving that edward left because noone expected it.

Well I have to agree that Edward prolonged his departure... He supposedly cared so much for Bella and he supposedly didnt want her to suffer, but was he blind?
I mean, I am sure he noticed the stress and the anxiety on her. Then he takes her into the woods and left her there????... Knowing what his leaving will do to her thinking that she will just walk back home and be ok. WHAT A MORON!!! I love Edward and the fact that they end up together, but I am also glad Jacob came around and made Edward's life miserable in Eclipse, he deserved it...
I though Edward was very mean to her.... This is chapter breaks my heart every time I read it. The waiting the uncertainty she goes through it is heartbreaking. I read it and it leaves me breathless.... DAMN U EDWARD ; )....

Wanted to read as many comments as possible but there are so many since I posted yesterday, it has taken me ages.LOL.

I think most of you seem to fall into a couple of camps, understand Edward and hate Edward in this chapter.

My fav quote, I think, is quite important to the reason Edward justifies his leaving and inso doing makes the biggest mistake he could make. Because he cannot read Bella's mind he assumes that she is like any other human he has had contact with over the 90 or so years as a vampire. He should have known better really but that is inexperience in love for you!

He smiled gently. "Don't worry. You're human - your memory is no more than a sieve. Time heals all wounds for your kind."

"And your memories?" I asked. It sounded like there was something stuck in my throat, like I was choking.

"Well" - he hesitated for a short second - "I won't forget. But my kind.....we're very easily distracted".

This is such a sad chapter but so necessary for the story to happen the way it did.

First fleeting glimpse of the 1st wolf Sam, hope they put that in the movie.

In fact Bella realises in Chapter 4 that her mind could be like a sieve and so she takes steps to remember Edward's eyes, skin and voice. (page 103 paperback uk edition)

Lost 1st love is such a wicked thing, it takes away your dignity and makes a fool of you. Unless you have experienced this you really can not understand how someone can behave as Bella did.

Even though this chapter is so sad I love the way it is written.

I just started on the Twilight series this summer after my friends got me hooked and NM was and still is my favorite. I remember taking the book with me into the basement where i was supposed to be working and instead, i had my book open, my hands visibly shaking as i read through it. When Edward left, i couldn't breath. I was so upset it was insane!! My brother tried to take the book away and i attacked him. No way was he touching it!

I am not going to go to see the movie till after you all so I can ask if anyone is angry with Edward..... I don't want to hate him.... and I didn't when I read the book but in a movie I just might!

This chapter is pure undiluted emotion. Pain. Emptiness. Loss. I'm typing through my tears just thinking about it. Everyone can relate in some messure, because everyone has (or will) have their heart broken at some point.
But, this isn't just someone this is the love of her life. She was giving up everything to be with him.and he decides to leave her... for her own good. So, Edward proves he isn't perfect. He makes the biggest mistake .... Sorry I get mad just thinking about it.
Stephanie got it right. The pain, the emptiness, the hole where your heart used to be. You can live and you can function but you aren't really whole. Been there!
This book made the Bella and Edward story! Painfull every time I read it. But, I keep re-reading it; although sometimes I skip to Alice's return after this chapter.

Well i was pretty sad that Edward left but i totally understand why he did it, so that didnt make me sob, i was just a litttle teary eye.

This Chapter is my favorite. My reason being that it is the best writing Stephanie has ever done. When she tells of how Billy refuses to hand Bella over to Sam; it shows just how much Billy cares for his daughter. I cry every time i read this chapter because i know if i were in that situation my father would do the same for me. I heart u daddy!!

I'm going to try to read along because I want to re-read New Moon again! I think this is going to be my fourth time reading it. This is my favourite book in the entire Saga and I'm Team Edward, not Team Jacob. Call me crazy, but I love how much pain everyone was in, in New Moon. Stephenie just wrote with so much true passion. I actually felt like Bella. I cried when she did, I smiled when she did. And even though Edward was gone in most of the book, he made up for it when he came back. I thought it was worth it. And the Volturis were introduced into the Saga too! Just talking about it makes me want to read New Moon now.

I just want to tell the story of my first reading of New Moon:

After watching TL on DVD the night it released (yes, latecomer) I knew there was a beautiful story waiting to be devoured, and went to a bookstore the next day and bought the hardcover - just TL. I read it in 3 days, unable to put it down, and of course it had ch 1 of NM at the end which of course ended in a cliff hanger ("Dazed and disoriented, I looked up from the bright red blood pulsing out of my arm-into the fevered eyes of the six suddenly ravenous vampires" - NO!! What's going to happen to Bella?!)

I new at this point I needed the whole saga, which could be very expensive from the bookstore (HC), so I did the responsible thing and ordered the box set from Amazon w/ free shipping, but I would have to wait almost 2 weeks for delivery! That just wouldn't do. I was in a grocery store and walked passed the book section when that beautiful white and red flower caught my eye. I couldn't resist. I picked it up, planning to read the first few lines of ch 2 - and got hooked. I know, I have no self discipline! Although I could have kept going I decided it was best to set it down and continue my shopping. That was hard, because I knew my Edward was suffering - and that KISS!! *sighs*

About a week later I am still waiting on my package from Amazon and it was also time to go to the grocery store - eager for the first time in my life - so that I could sneak in one more chapter. So there I was again, standing in the book aisle leaning against my shopping cart, reading Chapter 3. I promise myself - just this chapter and then you will have your own book soon to finish.
Bella and Edward walk into the woods and I feel a tingle in my eyes. Uh-oh. It's fairly late, around 11:30, but there are still plenty of people in this 24 hour store. I keep going, trying to act normal - I fail. I can see where the conversation is headed and my eyes well up and all I can think is, "I should be in the privacy of my bedroom with a box of Kleenex!" Somehow I read the rest of the chapter, as I discretely wiped at my eyes, and then forced myself to put the book back on the shelf, and walked away. All I saw was 'October' - I wouldn't even flip the page to be tempted - I knew I needed my bed to read the rest.

Sorry that was so long but I hope you enjoyed it anyway!

I may be a Jacob girl all the way down to the bone, but i still cried when edwards left, and i currently get teary eyed every time i re-read it. I also get really angry for the way he leaves.
Hey here's an idea, lets break the heart of a directionally challenged and acident prone girl and then leave her in a wet forest alone by herself.
The iceing on the cake? Oh im also going to pretend i dont love her and promise her the imposible ("it will be as if i never existed").
And of course, whats a cake without icecream right? well why dont i just steal all her mementoes of our brief time together. because me being completely miserable and douchey before the break up wasn't bad enough.
Im telling you edward makes me so furious in this chapter, its the only time he made it evident that his heart is cold and dead.

His heart is tortured and broken. Not cold and dead. I think Carlisle said it best when he asked Bella, "If you believed as he did, could you take away his soul?"

Oh I still cry everytime i read that chapter, i actually felt worse for Edward that Bella... I knew the reason he was doing everything he did... (which he explained to her when he came back) ......
He didn't leave her alone in the woods lost, her house was still visible she got lost trying to follow him......(i guess he realized she was following and left a note for Charlie just in case she got lost.)
He had to act distant and cold, i don't think he could have said to her " i love you but i've to leave because my family and I are a danger to you" or give her a big hug and kiss and then leave. I believe he was suffering more than she was when he told her he didn't want her.
To me this chapter showed how much he loved her and how desperate he was to protect her and give her a chance to have a normal life.........

and if Edward had never left they would never know how much they truly cared about one another (Bella's Epiphany) :) my favorite part!

I love that part too! When I first read it, more than anything I was relieved that Bella finally accepted Edward loved her all along. Because as readers, we know that he lied to her in the woods. So I can't wait to see this scene on the big screen! I hope they do it justice. I'm sure they will. lol :D

I'm going to start re-reading New Moon tonight!!! (: I've been busy the last two days, but I am definitely planning on turning on my lovely white Christmas lights in my room, lighting my butterscotch scented candle, cuddling up with all of my pillows and reading my book. I don't think I'll be able to read just three chapters though!!! haha. Although, I have read this book over five times. I remember when I'd bought my copy of New Moon, the cashier at books-a-million was like, "I don't like this one. Edward leaves." And I was like "WHAT!?! OMG ARE YOU SERIOUS!?!?!" And she goes, "Yes, but DON'T worry, he comes back." lolol so , I didn't feel too worried after that.


NM is a heart breaking novel, but it is an important one. If it wasn't for our Jacob Black, Bella would've never been protected as well and wouldn't have gotten out of her melodramatic zombie phase. (: I cannot wait for this movie!!! 22 DAYS, GUYS! 22 DAYS!!!!!!!!! :D We can go ahead and say THREE WEEKS. ahhh! I'm dressing up as Alice to go to the midnight showing! I'm super excited!!!

On another topic... I just wanted to thank the Mods or whomever is responsible for the adverstising on this site for the promotion of the "Precious" movie... This is my second most anticipated move for November!

I think it was dreadful how Edward left...I absolutely could not get over it...however, in the long run dont you think it actually strengthens their relationship?...when Edward left, Bella couldnt possibly live without him and she knew that when he came back...so I HATED it, but i thought it strengthened their relationship

After reading the draft of Midnight Sun, I reread New Moon. This changed my perspective of the chapter entirely. The way Edward acted towards Bella in the final days before he left was once viewed to be harsh and cruel. Now I see the true turmoil Edward faced as he found the strength to leave her. Torture. Lingering the few days after his family left was a testement to his struggle as he mustered up the strength to do what he felt in his heart was right. To save Bella's soul.

The best line of Chapter 3:
"You...don't....want me?"

I really loved your comment! :D I think Edward suffered more than Bella did! " You...don't ...want me?" ......I imagine the torture and agony it must have been to him to look at her face and the pain she was in and then answer "No."
I wish SM could finish writing Midnight Sun, it is just so interesting to read the story from Edward's perspective. :)

Ok is it just me? I didn't cry when I read this chapter, but I cry every time I c the trailer that shows this part :( I think I have a problem!!!!!!! Why don't I cry when I read it, but ball my eyes out in other parts & books?
Like in BD. I cried the most in this book. First time I cried in BD was the wedding cuz I felt bad 4 Bella thinking she might never see her "real" family again & when she finds Charlie after the wedding right b4 they leave for the honeymoon. U can just feel the emotion & bittersweet ending between them. The second time was when she is telling Renesmee goodbye & putting her little back pack on in the baseball clearing Ohhhhhh it breaks my heart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When Nessie touches her locket w/ the 3 of them in a pic in it & says "We'll always be Together" & Bella corrects her & say's "in our hearts we'll always be together. "But when the time comes today, you have to leave me" *sobbbing*

The first time I read New Moon when Edward left Bella I couldn't stand it. I was depressed and wasn't interested in reading anything about Jacob. I had to skip ahead until I found out that Bella and Edward found each other again. I read about Edward and Bella getting back together and then went back and read the middle of the book, I was heart broken when Edward left. This breakup really affected me and I couldn't go on until they got back together. New Moon is my favorite book in the series for all the emotion it creates.

This book has to be my favorite book besides twilight.
when i read it the first time.. of course i shed a few tears because the way its explained .. the feeling of nothingness and just a stabbing pain that bella described was just so realistic is as you can feel it yourself.. and every time i re- read the book and come to this chapter when he leaves her its the same fresh pain the you feel when he leaves her.. my favorite quote from the book is this one.. and its what makes me share the same pain as bella does..

" I felt the smooth wooden floor beneath my knees, and then the palms of my hands, and then it was pressed against the skin of my cheek. I hoped that i was fainting, but, to my disappointment, i didnt loose consciousness. The waves of pain that had only lapped at me before now reared high up and washed over my head, pulling me under.
I did not resurface."

but i will go back and read again to keep up with u guys
now Edward was trying to use the startegy of slowly emotionally and physicaly detaching himself from Bella. i think he underestimated the deep feelings Bella had for him , or he wouldnt have left. There are few things that have puzzled me in the break up , 1st why would Edward break up with Bella in the woods and not in her house ? Charlie was not home , bcoz Edward left him a note of Bella and him walking outside. 2nd why Edward didnot take the radio from Bella's truck like the rest of his family gifts ? it is also considered as a reminder as the airplane tickets , the photos and the music CD . and 3rd when did he do that exactly , after he broke up with Bella or after he left ,and my most agonising question Edward came to Bella's house in his car , so when he ran away from her his car was still there infront of her house , so that means that he ran a full circle back to his car , so my question is didnt Edward notice that Bella didnot return home , i know he cant hear he thoughts , but he hears her heart beat. so can anyone try to explain these 4 me

M y last point , even i hate to admit it , but Edward leaving Bella was important for the story. Bella and Edward would have just be fighting about her immortality for the next books and most importantly it gave Bella a chance to have a choice to be a vampire and with Edward forever. Bella got a chance to know the effect of being away from Edward and she formed a friendship . she herself said in Eclipse that she doesnt know who she would choose(Edward or Jake) if she doesnt know what it is like to be away from Edward .

Ok I think he took her to the woods so that he could have time to go back to her house and get the stuff and hide it, he knew she would get lost trying to find him and left a note for Charlie because of course he knew she hadn't come back but know that makes me think Bella knew he had to get his car right? so instead of following him into the woods she could have gone back to the house and wait for him there, the house was still visible ( but ok she was in shock after he told her he didn't want her. Very insteresting questions, i really never thought about any of these before.....hmmm.......thinking......

what about the sniffing of the animal before she was found by the search crew.... wolf? yes? sam?

Ok soo I thought i lost my book....but then i remembered she had it last so i asked her what happend to it.... she told me 3 months later that she got the book burned by her mother...(her mother is a really strict christian)... i was literally crying when i found out she got it burned!!!

Hmmm ... I think that doing The Runaways was an eye opener for her. She was always a tomboy anyway. But I think that spending so much time with Joan Jett, a trailblazer for women in her own right, was a big influence on her and her outlook on life.

This coupled with the intense media scrutiny that she received during this time over her possibly dating Rob plus her knew look that she received so much undeserved flack over, probably made her the Kristen we know today.

The girl that shies away from the media, doesn't trust anyone, and in general despises the whole fame game.

As a fan of Kristen's, I did wish that she was more outgoing and happier in the public eye. But I do not live her life or begin to know what it is like to go from no one knowing who you are to living in a fishbowl and all anyone cares about is who you are screwing.

Sure, I miss the funloving carefree girl that did interviews with Rob back in the day, but it looks like those days are long gone, unfortunately.

And yes, just got that magazine yesterday and she is hot.

i agree! I loved Eclipse the best because Edward was less careful with Bella and they spent as much time as possible together. In New Moon, at the beginning, he isn't spending the night as much and he isn't driving her to school.

I'll be honest, after reading this chapter the first time I drank a bottle of wine and cried my pathetic little eyes out. It hit me really hard because it brought back all the pain (which lead to emotional numbness) and depression that resulted after my fiance and I split. It took me 6 months to pull myself out of that, so I knew how Bella felt.

Like others, the next day I woke up and immediately flipped forward to the last chapter just to make sure they were back together. If he hadn't come back, I don't think I would have finished the book.

I consider myself Team Switzerland but I get so sad when team Edward/vampire starts trashing MY Jacob/wolf (although i love Edward), when Edward's brother attacked Bella, Edwards left Bella. When Jacob's brother wanted to attacked Bella, Jacob left his family to protect her. So chew on that team Edward...and for all of you who said Edward is a better boyfriend than Jacob...what do u have to say about that?
I'm just saying they are both great in their own unique way.

yaaay i discovered that theory yesterday!!....i just got to thinking..hmmm....it wasnt similar but Remember when paul was about to attack bella after she said something to him, jacob faught with paul, but he didnt go and tell bella, am sorry its to dangerous for you to be with me, no he stayed with her..and when Sam ordered the pack to kill bella, he left them and went to defend her again!!...am sure edward would do the same but he just avoided the situation cowardly!!...

Here's the difference between Edward & Jacob in that respect.
Ultimately, Edward is not proud of what he is...he feels he is a souless monster...an act against nature.
Jacob on the other hand is very proud of being a shape shifter...it is part of his heritage and lineage and that gives him a confidence that Edward doesn't have.

I think that factor really adds to how they hold themselves and interact with Bella.

I don't think that Edward was cowardly...I think he really believed that he was not worthy of Bella's love and that she was better off without him.

One little correction. Remember when Jacob just found about himself, he hated himself just like Edward. He didnt like the fact he is part of an over grown dog or something. Jacob feels that it is an act against nature as well. So what im trying to say is that Edward isn't a coward okkayy just because he tried to avoid the situation..He just thought that Bella would have a better life with a human...which could be jake..but her heart will allways belong to Edward! :)

Jacob pushing Bella telling her that they couldnt be friends lasted one day once he saw her and told her that. He went to see her that night to apologize and make it right. Edward went away for like what 4, 5, 6 months

I feel that Jacob put Bella's safety then happiness first always but I'm confused with edward's intentions sometimes. In new moon he seems to put safety first then after that, he gave Bella anything she wanted even if it kills her literally....eg: sleeping with her, turning her, and renesme

Jacob would find other ways to put Bella's first without killing her..like when she wanted to cliff dive...he said yes to that but insisted they dived on the safer lever with him

and also when after the bike incident, he insisted Bella stop and go to hospital even though she protested...he was not gonna put her happiness first because he needed her alive and well first before anything else..now thats a great boyfriend

ok! i think both jake and Edward have different ways of trying to make Bella happy, Edward is protective, thoughtful, careful he thinks about her future not only the moment and he overreacts because (let me count) in Twilight she was almost killed 3 TIMES!!! And Jake is less worried about consequences, he feels he's doing the right thing by helping Bella with the bikes and the cliff diving and all that but one thing is for sure he would never need to protect her from himself like Edward and that is exactly what Edward's biggest problem is. Edward sees himself as the greatest danger and the worst thing that could happen to Bella. When Edward realizes the decisions he makes don't work then he goes in the opposite direction and that's when the whole feathers, broken headboard and cesarian happened. Poor Edward it would been so much easier if he had left the venom spread in Twilight. :D

Jacob did have to protect Bella from himself, he just handled it better. I think Stephanie Meyer created purposely that way because thats all he had going on for him. Edward already had the love at first sight crap, and Bella's heart no matter what so Jacob needed to be better at everything else. I feel the same way...Edward should have let the venom spread in twilight but then we wouldnt have 4 books to obsessed about lol. Even worst, we wouldnt get to know MY Jacob <3

OKayy so you know how Eward went away for like 5 months and came back...His gonna end up giving Bella anything she wants even if it kills her..but he did TRY to find a way to not give it to her.. like how he didn't want to turn her so he made a compromise to only do it if she marries him.

And Edward didn't know that leaving Bella would literally kill her...he thought that she was just like every normal human girl who forgets about their exes and move on. And he has allways thought of Bella's safety first. He just wants her alive and didn't want her to die all because of him.

Well it would be better than leaving her to die. Those were just my suggestions but MY Jacob would have come up with even better ideas. Also remember even Bella wanted to stay away from the big white house in chapter 2 when she realized that she might loose Edward.

Oh Edward is not a coward!!! Mostly he was trying to protect her from what he is. This is my sixth time reading this book, and I've cryed like a baby every single time I read this chapter. The emotions this book, let alone chapter three, brings out in me shocked me the first time I read it. Its so heart wrenching, and I always think that I feel a fraction of the way Bella feels. Not only because its something we can all relate to in a way, but because we know how in love Bella and Edward are.
In Twilight we were "with" Bella when she fell in love with Bella, so we know what a strong and intense their love was. No matter what you think of Bella, I think we all feel connection with her, because we've been with her through her journey and we're experiencing this world through her. So I understand and feel what Edward's leaving does to her.
SM did such an amazing job with portraying all these emotions in NM. And the October November December January thing could've been really cheesey, but instead it was really effective.

the first time i read it i cried. bella was so depress that it broke my heart. and i think we've all been there so we can relate.

i was also mad at edward...for a min or two.

i couldnt wait for bella to do something reckless again so edward could be in the picture a bit.

then i was annoyed at jacob. sorry but im not a big fan of the wolfs. the only wolf i liked was seth.

It took me 3 times to read till I finally go through it without crying over Edward....then I go to know Jacob and then started crying for both! Geeze a girl just can't get a break in this book!! Well if you all haven't vistited Stephenie Meyer's webpage I suggest you do so to read the out takes from New Moon. They are great and I can't wait till Nov 20th!

:-( I hate this chapter. And the crazy thing is, I usually end up crying before the breakup because I know what's coming when Edward's acting so cold and distant towards Bella.
I think the lines in the breakup that usually get me crying harder even after reading it six times already are:
"You... don't... want me?"
"No."

and

"'You're not good for me, Bella.' He turned his earlier words around, and so I had no argument. How well I knew that I wasn't good enough for him."
I hated Edward for awhile after he said the last one.

Also, even though I hated it when Edward "took" the CD and pictures, I just realized now that it's actually probably a good thing he did. Because think about it. Look at what Bella did to the radio in her car. She killed it trying to get it out of her truck. At some point or another she probably would've gotten so upset and hysterical that she'd have ended up breaking the CD like her others and ripping up the pictures. Eh. I don't know. Maybe not...

i read that chapter on the bus on my way to work, there was an old lady sitting next to me, (over 60, i'm 25) i gasphed, and cried in a low voice, "noooo" the old lady next to me touched my arm and looked at the book, and told me, "I know, i couldn't believe it at first either, keep reading dear."
it just goes to show that everyone reads this book. i arrived at work, all teary eyed, and told my co-workers the reason, and they made fun of me all day.

I had a Twilight fan encounter today too. I went to this office to hand in some paper work and as I'm filling it out at the desk, I hear a song that sounds A LOT like "Roslyn" of the New Moon soundtrack. So I start listening and realizes that it's sound like it, because it IS Roslyn.

Well next thing you know I whip my head up and look at the computer staring.. "Is that the New Moon Soundtrack?" The receptionist smiles all big (probably mid 40s) and says "YES!! I'M SO EXCITED TO SEE THE MOVIE I ALREADY HAVE A TICKET! I'VE NEVER BOUGHT A PRESALE TICKET BEFORE!!!" .. she was practically jumping up and down. It made my day! lol

We've all seen way too many "sneak previews" to be truly surprised, but here's what I hope to see in the movie:

I hope the capture Edward distancing himself from bella, but in a way that they can show that, despite how hard he's trying to hide it from bella and us (the audience), it is painful for him. The photographs are important too. I kind of hope it goes something like this:

After the break up convo and Edward asks Bella if he can ask one favor of her, I really hope they show that "flicker" across his face. I think that's incredibly important. And when he finally asks her not to do anything reckless or stupid, I hope they show a little emotion before his eyes immediately "cool" again.

In the sneak peaks it looks as if Bella just falls down after he leaves. I hope they saved this part for theaters:

"Wait!" she says as she reached out for him, and at first it looks as though he's reaching for her two, before she realizes he's pinning her wrists to her sides. She's about to struggle, but he leans in and places one last, cool kiss on her forehead. A dirty trick. He knows how she'll react. Her eyes close and the pressure on her wrists disappears with an unnatural breeze. He's gone.

Her eyes flash open. She jerks to her right. Nothing. To her left. Nothing. She turns around, looking at a small vine maple, shuddering with the gentle wind of his passage. She follows. The sky begins to darken. Branches slash against her delicate skin but she doesn't care. The wind slightly picks up and rustles the leaves near by. She begins to run. <<shot of her foot catching on the root of a tree>> She falls face first. Her face is in the dirt but she doesn't bother getting up. "He's gone" she whispers. And her eyes close.

We're not sure how much time has passed. Shot of the new moon, dark and barely visible against the black sky. Pan down to volunteers calling her name; searching for her with Charlie leading them. Shot of bella, who is now on her side. Her eyes are lightly open but she sees nothing. You can hear the men shouting in the distance, but she doesn't seem to. Her eyes close. New shot from her perspective. A loud and muffled sniffing sound, like that of a huge dog. Your eyes slightly part but nothing is in focus. You may think you see a large animal. You eyes close again and then open to see a tall and muscular young man beginning to kneel down to you. You've never seen him before but he looks like he could be related to Jake. "Bella." He says and you can hear the slight relief in his voice. Shot of Sam Uley picking up Bella. "I've got her!" He shouts. As he's carrying her she mumbles; "he's gone... he's gone."

After everyone has left the house Bella, half asleep, asks Charlie, "How did you know where to find me?"
"Your note," He responds, looking worried, "you don't remember leaving i?" It sounds more like a statement than a question.
"My...note?" Her eyes flash open and she sees him unfolding a piece of worn paper. On it, in messy handwriting "Going for a walk with Edward, up the path. Back soon, B." The B gave him away. Although the "messy" cursive was still too perfect for her, the B looked beautiful. He must have been in a hurry.
The camera pans quickly to her face and zooms in slightly for emphasis. She immediately jumps up, and runs up the stairs to her room. She opens the cd played. Empty. A slight sob/force of air escapes her as she turns to the photo album on her floor. She kneels down, touching it with both hands as a tear finally escapes from her eyes. She slowly opens it with shaking hands, and it's gone. The first picture. Written underneath: "Edward Cullen, Charlie's kitchen, Sept, 13th."

Then either she can whisper "as if he never existed, or we can hear his voiceover" But I really hope they have some cool transition phase to show her agony, and the passing of those empty months.

did you see the break up scene in the movie? I've got a link if you want, it's not very a good clip because it's in a cinema in italy but it's a good scene that made me shiver ( it that the right word in english :D)

Okay - New to the site...well to the comments section... but Brittany.. I so could see the scene in my head.. and you described it beautifully... I am at my computer and am so teary eyed...

lets face it guys whether we are team jake or team edward we love to love certain aspects of all of them and love to hate certain characterisitics too because its dysfunction displayed at nauseum....they just project so many self defeating behaviors we have all engaged in at one time or another and we are only projecting our dysfunction through them-LOL!

I was so mad at edward for leaving her like that. And isn't just like a man to think he knows whats best.

OMG THAT IS THE BIGGEST HEART BREAK EVER! I CRY EVERYTIME DURING THIS CHAPTER( MY FOURTH TIME READING THE BK) I CAN'T WAIT TO GET TO THE END! THE MOVIE IS LOOKING SO FANTASTIC! THIS CHAPTER HAS ME FEEL EVER SO DISENCHANTED :(

This is such a sad chapter. I've almost finished it reading it now ... I will share my thoughts in a bit.

First, reading that a lot of the books went air born many times was just funny...hahaha:D

Now, I maybe in the odd, but I'm glad Edward left & although it hurt Bella, I'm glad she didn't throw a fit. If Edward hadn't left, we wouldn't know how much they really loved each other. I wanted them to miss each other somehow that it hurts them both & u wonder what's next.......u wanna see them 2gether again & a break up was a good way.

For me it was actually worse to read the next pages, where they are blank except for the months... Even though Edward said he was leaving, and then left her, it didn't really sink in until those pages where the months went by with nothing... I seriously felt like my life was over! It was like my heart was ripped out, I felt like I knew exactly how Bella felt... and the whole time I was just thinking "no no no no he can't really be gone!!!"
I also admit, I read to the end... I seriously couldn't BEAR it if he didn't come back, so I had to check just to make sure (I'm a cheater haha... ) Reading NM the 2nd and 3rd time was better, because I actually spent time on these chapters and the next ones instead of just rushing to the part where he comes back. I hope CW represents the months part well; it needs to be as dramatic as it was in the book!

I cheated too! I started flipping through to make sure that Edward came back somehow. I didn't want to ruin the HOW part, but I buzzed ahead to the last chapter and saw them together and felt 1000 times better, because watching the months pass with NOTHING was heartbreaking.

I felt exactly the same you did... and Im a cheater too...
Its weird... the way readind those chapter made me change my mood, and all the perspective of my life... Im gettieng better now, just waiting for November 20 to come fast enough.

I cried when I read that...it's just soo well written. You really understand Edward's reactions.... When you read it from Bella's point of view it seems like Edward's being harsh and mean, but to read that he's in so much agony...
I mean you know that he is in pain because he's going to leave her, but you can't read that in New Moon because Bella doesn't see that... it's just so sad.

Too many comments to read through so I'm not sure if anyone has already mentioned this little fact... towards the end of the book it mentions that Edward was gone for 8 months but it's only 4 months. Am I missing something here? I just finished reading NM for my second time.

four of those months were the blank pages..the other four months were spent with jacob.

This chaper is WAY too difficult to read. I have read the series about 5x now but I have only read chapters 1-16 of New Moon 2x. This whole chapter is a goobye. Edward is so distant the whole chapter and then the BOOM SHELL!

I can't even reread this book just because of this chapter, once I get to it I have to put the book away! I remember reading it for the first time & my best friend didn't warn me even a little bit about how sad it was so I broke down like a baby and called her up & yelled at her lol. I still haven't read the whole book (I skipped a lot of the middle trying to see if he ever came back). I'm currently trying to read it cause I know I missed a lot of the stuff with the wolves, maybe I'll just skip over this part?!

When i 1st read this book & it showed the months that passed october, november, december, january...with nothing else written i felt bella's pain. :( it was pointless to even say what she did during that time b/c she was emotionally dead. I thought that idea was so simple but yet so deep...good job stephanie on that one.

now that i think about it majority of the saga happened over a really short period of time it's kinda crazy.

well, according 2 (ilovealphas) she read the mag people who confirmed it. Now, I am one who believes in waiting until they confirm it ( I'm truly a believer) but those photos (dinner,shopping, & the audio..) looks as though it's true. I'm not sure it's still speculation. I came up w a theory the other day how I didn't believe in him & Selena even though there were photos of them hugging & practically kissing. With that said all photos of him & swift hasn't been touchy.....but her on Ellen & yeah....just prepare urself! Start practicng slow breathing & not disliking swift! It will be for the best! I totally agree. I took that part really hard...I couldnt sleep, eat, or work during the reading of the third chapter, and the months being skipped just through me over the edge

Because I love Jacob and Edward so much, It pushes me to hate Bella even more cause in just 3 years, this girl put Edward through so much...this man lived for years and years...and this girl running into his life put him through so much pain in the short little 3 years....she is no good for him really. Thank God for imprinting because Jacob would have been scar for life...his teenage years of love and happiness were not only taken away by family legend due the presence of Bella's boyfriend but also by Bella's consistence pounding on his heart...she is no good for anyone.

Well, I almost stopped reading the book... honestly!... Once he was out of the story, then what!! I don't like Jacob at all and i read on only because my cousin promised that there was a huge surprise almost at the end of the book... ALICE IS BACK!!! That made my moment!!!! Having alice is en forks was like a... "ok, he'll be back sooner or later"... I don't know how i'll handle all that Jacob part in the movie!!!

I was searching like a mad person for Edward and then I found Alice and I said as long as one of the Cullens is back i will continue reading and then I found him!! - And with a resigned look on my face i will watch the Jacob and pack parts in the movie and will be patiently waiting for the Edward visions.:)

I understand how she could not be royally pissed at him when he left... I dont think she is a weak person for being completely in love and devastated that he just walked out of her life... YES! I was sooooo hurt and upset with Edward. This chapter makes the book. I honestly cried so so hard. It was like reliving the worst breakup of my life, only harder because I felt like Edward was leaving me.

I was so upset with Bella in Eclipse for kissing Jacob at her. I was screaming at her, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?! You KNOW how you felt having Edward gone, and now he's back and you're THROWING IT AWAY!"

Ugh. I can't even express how I felt when she told Jacob she was IN LOVE with him! ....Bella nearly made me fight a book that chapter. Nothing against Team Jacob fans, I just prefer him as the friend not the love of her life.

Its a sign of a really awsome writer, Stephanie really makes you feel like you are Bella and feel every moment of it. And in the movie, if Chris nails it on screen!!! OMG Im bringing the 2 pack of tissues to share!!

We see Edward make the necessary adjustments as she proves her safety is not a concern as the story progresses. I would also like to back this theory up by asking you all to take a look at Breaking Dawn. After Bella becomes a Vampire, how do you feel that Edward is still and overbearing overprotective, domineering idiot?

I think there were instances where he kind of tried, but as a vampire Bella said she felt like she was more his equal so she didn't let him get away with it.
I woldn't go so far as to call him "an overbearing overprotective domineering idiot" LOL, I think he was just so focused on how fragile he thought she was and he was so scared of losing the love of his life that he'd waited 90 years for that he wanted to go to extremes to ensure her safety, depite the fact that it drove Bella batsh**.
Either way, I wouldn't have objected to being in her shoes. LOL

Totally Kristine! I mean i actually do like Jake. As a FRIEND. He became an utter annoyance to me when he kept trying to cross the boundaries. I can't say it's all his fault bc Bella's stupidness let him...people will go as far as you let them!

He just was so disrespectful...the kissing and touching without permission. Constantly putting her in these awkward and compromising situations. She was such a fool to not be more assertive and to put her foot down.

You know what always got on my nerves in Eclipse? The fact that she was always defending Jake...even when he was wrong she always felt the need to baby him to some degree. She never really stuck up on Edwards behalf when ever Jake would bash him. It was always her trying to save face for the sake of not hurting Jake's feelings .... She was right in the part of the book where she goes "I now deserved him (Edward) even less now than ever before" (I may have messed this quote up word for word but it's the part when he brings Jake back and told her he would give her privacy to make a decision w/Jake and he took Seth w/him.) when she said this, i was saying out loud "yeah, your are right on this one"

i actually like that part bc i was actually annoyed edward was letting his family and the rest of the wolves fight well slightly his battle while he sit in a tent w/bella (which i know they cant leave bella alone bc someone could get her) but i felt how jacob is he wasnt going to let his family fight his battle and not participate in a fight that he asked them to do for a girl that they werent so fond of. also, i think jacob was telling the truth he knew who she really wanted by her @ as long as he was there she would be fine w/out him. he was just being honest and about time he stood up for himself when it came to bella!

Sorry to but into your convo, but I think you may be forgetting something when it comes to this part of Eclipse. Edward did not let his family fight his battle willingly... he did it because Bella told him the truth about wanting to help and needing to be with him no matter what. He did it to save her from being in the midst of the battle with the newborns... because that's what she wanted to do. Remember, she was in favour of Jasper's idea, which was her going to the clearing with them to provide a "distraction". Edward sat out beacuse he couldn't bear that... not beacuse Bella was wanted him to let his family fight for him. She knew she could let Jacob go, even then. She was quite honest with both of them about that. She was worried sick about Jake, but she would not have gone after him. She would have gone after Edward... and gotten herself killed by Victoria and Riley in the process.

Oh yeah I know! & everyone was fine w Edward staying behind & 2 be honest someone had to bc knowing Victoria she would have taken the opportunity of a left alone Bella. And as for her not chasing after Jacob that's correct that's why when someone said earlier about Jake not showing his feelings toward her during the tent scene I think that's a raw & hontesy scene. Jake knew she would be worried but she didn't need him there like she needed Edward..

I'm with you there. I hated Bella for giving Edward the ultimatum that forced him to stay with her rather than fight alongside his family. How incredibly selfish! And I hated Edward (temporarily, of course) for letting her do that to him.

I thought that one line told Bella how Jake seriously understood that as long as Edward came out alive the rest didn't matter to Bella's heart. And that was the truth. She was selfish and wanted Edward. Jake understood that - that is why he was willing to act so recklessly and nearly get killed by that vamp that tried to get Leah.

Bella is always telling everyone about how she can not live without Edward. She makes her choice. It was cold hard truth Jake gives her. And everyone uses this to their advantage with her.

He does manipulate but not there. I personally like when he uses his thoughts against Edward. Edward the one Vamp who never has to control his 'gift' get taught a mighty lesson when he does that.

I think all 3 are wrong. But hey - not my story to right those wrongs.

i think he thinks about how dead Bella was when he left, remember the part where they are in the car and JAcob starts talking bout how pale she is, and he mentions the cullens, and that moment bella starts breathing really hard and she grabs her chest like she's trying to stop the her heart from hurting!!...he shows edwards images like those, the painful ones!! so edward can feel guilty for leaving Bella!!!...

Wolfi, Jake was an extremely good friend to Bella when she really needed one (hello, personal sun :) ), but when he really started persuing her romantically my little brain kept feeling he was being quite condescending towards her by times.....the turkey! LOL

exactly! i personally think jacob was good for her it was natural (her natural path) if he left it would hurt but not kill her, she didnt NEED his love to the point where she would become suicidal bc thats not normal..especially for only dating maybe 2yrs/3 you have known each other.i think edward's and bella's relationship was unhealthy. however, with that said this a fantasy book and everything is 20x more extreme than normal life so to follow this story her and edward's relationship made sense

It would have been very painfull for Edward as well if Jacob would have stayed during the fight, anyway Bella needed Edward to stay with her, and she wanted Jake to stay.. there's a big difference between wanting and needing

When he left I felt the same way I was in a depressed mood until he came back. I read and read until he came back.
Bella was never in love with Jake she wanted him to be her brother so she could have some sort of claim on him. I think she told him that so he wouldn't do anything stupid.

That's what I was thinking too, but it seems like after she told him she was in love with him, she couldn't stop saying it throughout the book. :-( That made me believe she really was in love with him, even though I'm one of those people who believe you can't be in love with two people simultaneously. I hope you're right and I was just as gullible as Jacob. This makes me want to reread the book, but I don't have time. :-( Grrr college.

With THIS chapter....I CRIED....I cried...and I had to put the book down several times....I was SHOCKED at the emotions the story was bringing out in me!!

Talk about FEELING...actually FEELING the gaping hole in my OWN chest!....It hurt....And every time Bella talked of how she would use one arm to hold her chest together was such a reminder of how THAT is EXACTLY what I had to do for any kind of comfort.....

The whole "Zombie" like state of mind....You're alive and breathing...but only because you CAN'T stop the breathing....even though you want to.....UGH!

Yes...this chapter is dark....Dark and twisty....and Stephanie Meyers HIT IT ON THE SPOT of what the breakup with your first love looks like......"Cause let's face it: I'm sure we've all had breakups that we more a relief than a heartache....But when it's your FIRST love..........F*ckin' OUCH ya know!!! Tell you the truth, I haven't feel too much for Vampire Diarie yet.

Yea even though I liked Denny, I was like WTH this is turning into a dang soap opera! LOL! The Vampire Diaries are okay, its gotten more and more interesting with every episode IMO but sometimes the similarities to Twilight can get a bit annoying. I bought the books but I havent started reading them. Im curious to see how different they are from the show since it "loosely" follows them. The main girl character is actually blonde and blue eyed in the book...The tv series of course the characters look like Bella and Edward...So weird...Oh well, I will keep watching, cause I'm a tv junkie like that! LOL! ☺

It used to be such a strong connection between each characters too.

I cried so hard when i read this book. It was so emotional that at times I thought i wouldn't be able to finish. I cried for days. Reading the break up seen was like re-living your first love break up all over again. grant it my first love break has been years but you can't help remember the devasting depressing blow to not only your heart but your self esteem constantly questiong why that person doesn't want you anymore. The zombie like state you seem to just go through the motions but never really feel anything. Every time I read this book I just cry. It's gut wrenching and heart breaking.

I know that his intentions were good, but it was an AWFUL decision, wrought with TERRIBLE consequences for both of them! He's lucky everything turned out as well as did, and if it weren't for JACOB and ALICE, it wouldn't have ! UGH AGAIN!!

And it made me angry with him that he didn't respect Bella enough, to be HONEST with her and allow her to make her OWN decision and not LIE to her about not loving her, I know... good intentions... but STUPID DECISION!!

For me...the first time I read this...I sobbed so hard that my husband had to check to see if I was alright. I had a break up very similar to this. He left me for my own good. I didn't understand it at the time, but he was right. I was better for it. He is still my Edward though. The "bad" boy that didn't "deserve" me but that I was hopelessly and irrevocably in love with. I guess that's why I love Twilight so much. Aw...*sigh*.

One more thing...October…November…December…January…totally brilliant choice SM! Those months were just a blur...a haze. For some reason...I just made this connection. My "Edward" also left me in September. I can't believe I didn't think of this until now. Weird. So I did walk around those months in a complete haze. Life held no meaning (life...meaning..over). I was 21 at the time. So young and innocent!

Ok, I have to make this quick and I don't have the book in front of me, but here goes.

Even though I believe that Edward WAY over reacted and should not have left her, it is one of those scenes that is necessary for the overall storyline of all books. He has to leave because:

To create conflict in the story
To show how much Bella really loves him
To insert Jacob into Bella's life, which ultimately is a most significant relash to her.
So that we will miss Edward, and truly appreciate his and Bella's relationship later on.
And to have the most EPIC of all reunions in Italy.
And to show how much Edward loves her by willing to make the ultimate sacrifice of his happiness for hers.

And as much as we all despise this chapter, it is one of the best, most heartwrenching, emotion driven chapters in the whole series. Which is why I refuse to watch the leaked scene. I want to ball like a baby for the first time in the theatre. :)

I have to say that as a parent of a tween and having been married for 15 years, this was a chapter I needed. As you grow older you don't necessarily forget the lessons you have learned over time or even how you learned them, but the actual emotions and feelings tend to fade or soften as something eroded by running water unless you have a specific reminder. As a parent it was a good reminder of the physical pains that come with the heartache that even a twelve year old can experience. Not to this depth obviously but as my daughter grows it will be mnice to have this chapter to read as a reminder of how understanding I need to be for her. I don't like remembering my physical heartaches, but sometimes I think its good for us.

Your points are well taken. This is a very important chapter. It was very well written. We can actually relate to Bella on a personal level, feel her pain.

This chapter propels the story along, is pivotal in so many ways. If reader aren't totally invested in the characters and their story at this point on a personal level they are here.

Young Bella's experience of emotional pain is so real. The relationship problems are so easy to relate to. This is not just a high school romance, at this point it becomes very evident that while there has been no physical intimacy between the two, the spiritual and emotional bonds are so binding that separation is physically painful.

The references to Romeo and Juliet only add to the drama. The similarities grow up to the ultimate conclusion. No matter what else happens in the rest of the story--through Eclipse and Breaking Dawn it is crystal clear that Bella and Edward's love and relationship will prevail; it is worth living for and fighting for.

I found their to be an epic love story. I could relate to both of them, Bella especially. I think we all like to think their love could happen to us. What happened in chapter 3 was so, so painful but as you said, an important step in their maturity, their relationship, and their story.

Very well said. I agree on all points. The break up inherently made us realize how much Edward and Bella are fated and destined to be together. Because despite all the odds, they end up together. Despite the temptation of such a wonderful friend in Jacob that would do anything for her, she still chooses Edward, the love of her life.

Totally Agree. Bella already had a lot on her plate without jacob threatening to get himself killed. (1)victoria and the newborns. (2)she was worried about the cullens and the werewovles. and she had no idea what the outcome of the fight was going to be. Never mind that she was already feeling like crap knowing that he was in pain over the conversation he overheard.She was at her most vulnerable and jacob took advantage of that. How many of us, if we were in bella's shoes being 18 and inexperienced would not have done the same thing.

Yes that is exactly what I meant about Jake using Edwards mind reading uncontrolled ability against him. Because he shouldn't use it except in extreme situations like when in Twilight those men were trying to hurt Bella. ALL of the vamps in BD that have abilities can control them EXCEPT Edward. It struck me as a serious flaw in Edward that he wanted Bella to learn control of hers when he doesn't have control of his.

SM commented on Edward's ability in a Q&A session somewhere...the conversation was posted on the Twilight Lexicon website. It is my understanding that Edward does not have a choice in what he hears. He more or less can only attempt to tune out the thoughts of the people in his environment. He also talks about this in Midnight Sun. I think he has a choice when it comes to how he chooses to respond to the things that he hears. I think his talent works a little different than some of the other vampires in breaking dawn.... half of their talents seem to be activated when they are threatened (like Bella and Kate) or it is something that they have to apply a small bit of effort to in order to activate talent, like in the case of Jane, Jasper, Zafrina, and Benjamin to name a few.

Another example of a Vampire that has a talent that is not something they can't honestly control (turn on or off 100%) would be Tia who has an awareness of what is right or wrong and Charles and Maggie who automatically know when someone is being dishonest. I would say Marcus's ability to be able to sense the depth of connection/relationship people have with one another is something he can't turn off but rather attempt to tune out. However Edward's ability to hear the thoughts of others'-- voices, is just that, Voices (in his head)...almost like when you are in a room full of ppl who are having a conversation and you are not participating--you can attempt to tune them out, but it doesn't necessarily stop you from hearing what they are actually saying. It's something you choose to pretend NOT to hear...or if you are occupied enough, something you miss out huge chunks of.

Have you ever seen the movie movie "What Woman Want" the one with Mel Gibson? I think that is a great example of what i am trying to say about Edwards talent. Mel Didn't wanna hear hat those women were saying, but he couldn't help it. He could help how he chose to respond to the comments.

I think the temptation was the opportunity to have a normal , comfortable life without the intensity of the life Edward warned would be hers if she became a vampire and married her.

Edward was always warning her, pleading with her that there was inherent danger if she stayed with him.

Jacob, on the other hand, pleaded with her that her life would be simpler if she was with him...a normal life. He gave her an out, an opportunity to have the home, the kids, the white picket fence girls dream about. He promised to make her human dreams come true.

Ironic that she got all that by marrying Edward.

bella was in love with Jacob. when she kisses him she realizes she was falling for him the whole time. which is why him imprinting on renesme dosnt make sense, but him falling for leah would have ; ) and anyway if she felt like he was a brother figure to her and she kissed him like THAT and admitted she was in love with him then she has some SERIOUS probs. When bella says she wants to be jacobs sister, its because she wants to CLAIM him in some kind of way. she wants to be around him with out the pressure of being with him in a romantic sense, not because she dosnt want to, cause she was tempted to like 2 or 3 times in New Moon alone, but because she feels like she isnt ready for it cause she feels like she is too broken to deserve to be with Jacob. she wants to make an excuse as to why she needs him the way she does. she always felt that connection to Jacob even when edward came back, she wasnt satisfied until she could be around Jacob on a every day bases like she did before edward came back. edward even knew thats why he tried to fill in the holes that Jacob filled, but failed to replace jacob and bellas relationship. and thats why Jacob kept trying, cause he knew she needed him and deep down she knew she could be happy with him.

as a reader you have to comprehend first person point of view on a deeper level. its kinda like psychology, you have to understand someones thoughts and point of view past all the things that they dont even want to admitt to themselves. you cant just take everything that the main character says or thinks or does as a fact you have to look past that and see that sometimes they dont want admitt the truth about things. then the auther (SM) writes hints to help you understand the first persons relationship with the characters that surround her.

I think she was in love with him even in new moon, she was just to absorbed in her own depression to realize how hot and cold she was being toward him, and in the end confusing and hurting him more. he sensed how much she needed him so when she said she didnt like him that way he still felt like there was a chance cause she acted like she wanted him there all a long.

Bella was unaware of too many things and her feelings were generally based on being ignorant of so much.You saw this time and again where she made decisions based on instinct and hoped for the best: going to Volterra to save Edward, becoming a vampire, keeping Renesmee. She didn't stop to think.

And so when she kissed Jacob, her newfound love, at the end of Eclipse, her passion was just as impulsive. She was afraid he'd die. Of course she's gonna think she's in love with him. So I agree, even Bella didn't know what she wanted at times.

When I first read this I definitely had tears in my eyes. He left her in such a crappy way. Taking everything that would remind her of him, and leaving her in the woods like that. I guess he didn't realize how much she was attached to him.

This chapter completely took me back to my first love breakup. I was right there with Bella this entire time, and loved how she couldn't listen to music after the breakup. (That was something I couldn't do after mine as well.)

I'm not sure how I feel about Edward taking all her pictures away. On one hand, nothing makes you sadder than stumbling across your first love's picture soon after the breakup. On the other hand, I feel like it made her crazy. It's like she almost believed he never existed and it never happened at all until she started hearing his voice. As crazy as Bella's actions were, I almost think I would do the same in her position.

I think that was a huge mistake and caused her so much pain. Taking her momentos of their relationship caused her unneeded grief. I know some people say this is necessary when a relationship ends, to help a person move on but I don't agree. There is necessary grief to work through, removing everything before the person is ready to move on is harmful.

I agree with that too. Though he did a sucky thing, I doubt he'd ever do that again IF he decided to leave her again. I think he learned his lesson, and that does count for something. :)

I think he actually learned much more than Bella through this whole thing.
He learned he was wrong.
He learned Bella loved him as much as he loved her.
He learned that if he wasn't there, in the picture, someone else would take his place.
He learned running away doesn't solve anything.
He learned he needed Bella to complete him, he was miserable without her.
He learned how much his family, all of them were willing to sacrifice for him
He learned the Volturi were seriously not a group to mess with.

He's lucky he made it through the experience intact, and that Bella was strong enough to save him.

You are so completely right. Distance makes the heart grow fonder. Edward may be a godsend, but he had things to learn too and I'm glad he learned them! And I'm also glad SM noted in the book that Edward would've come back regardless if Bella went to Italy or not. That's what made me forgive Edward. And I'm also really glad they put a fight with the Volturi at the end. While they are intimidating in the book, I felt it was a tad anticlimactic. I'm really looking forward to the breakup and the Volturi fight. I haven't watched any clips regarding those aside from the trailers.

i hope that the proposal scene will be in new moon and not in eclipse , just find it very funny, that bella was so shocked about edward's condition

Ugh, it was SO devestating when Edward left, but then to have him explain (beacuse a "clean break would be easier") that Alice had already gone too. Sobs! It was so upsetting! I was so depressed reading through those chapters and HATING on Jacob. Then to have Alice re-appear out of the blue I was so excited! I was squealing and just so happy for Bella. That was the best moment!

get over it, man!! he had to leave, there really never was a choice. i actually sympathise more with Edward on the whole break-up thing. It surely must have been harder for him, having to take a step that kills you and knowing that you can choose not to take it, but then also knowing that you must do it for the person you love.
I like him BECAUSE he left, otherwise I would have always thought he was a selfish bastard, who is willing to sacrifice anything for his own happiness. This way, he showed us that he had tried to do the right thing (i.e. leave Bella human) but it had been impossible for the both of them- refer to chapter 22 of Eclipse.

You're right, of course. It was important he show that his love was unselfish but it was so...gut-wrenching to experience their sense of loss!

Though I am Team Jacob, due to Edward's behaviour, I feel that if there was a book, like Midnight Sun, that focused on Edward's perspective for New Moon things may be different. Reading Midnight Sun I fell in love and understanding for Edward, seeing things in his eyes helps me understand why he does what he does. If I could see that in New Moon, even in the movie version, I'd be VERY happy.

Yes, Midnight Sun showed Edward's intense feelings and helped me understand him more, too. I'm glad Stephenine was able to get some of it out there but I wish she would finish the book so we would have a more complete picture.

Me, too! Edward's perspective was so intense, had so much emotional depth to it. Bella's seemed shallow and whiny, in comparison.

You know what's funny though? When I read it for the first time I did relate to Bella a lot! Perhaps I'm whiny lol!! I know people say Bella should be this strong and authoritative person, but honestly not all women are like that. Some are more passive, and emotional, and do have low self-esteem. I think that's why I do like Bella, I can totally see her point of view. She may not be a "kick a** Buffy the Vampire Slayer", but I kind of liked that about her :)

it's definitely that way, Edward's head is a much more interesting place to be in, but Bella is truly the one we can most identify with. if she had been this stunning blond full of confidence and authoritative, this saga would have been far less of a success. it's the fact that we identify with her, why we love the books so much. it could happen to us...

I think she does what she has to to survive. She is strong she took care of her Mom and Charlie. But when it comes to herself she isn't selfish. She would rather fix others problems than deal with her own.

Oh, yes! I feel that way, too. Bella is a lot like me, especially how i felt in high school, the way I felt about life and relationships.

However, I did appreciate Midnight Sun for giving us Edward's point of view so we could better understand his feelings. Just having Bella's POV felt incomplete after having a taste of his.

now that im on my 8th time reading the series I almost find it sadder during the time when edward is all distant because now you know whats coming. but even after reading it this many times I still bawl when he leaves and get so mad at him (even tho he believes he's doing it for a good reason). but the 1st time thru when I saw the oct, nov, dec, jan it felt like part of me was lost along with him :( but we all know they live happily ever after

True, the build-up to the break up is so sad! You see through Bella's eyes what is coming but are unable to warn her or prevent it from happening. When it happens you feel devastated, empty along with her.

AND that is what makes SM a great story teller!

To me, she is one of the best. Simple, to the point, makes you relate to the character to the point of actual pain. I never tire of reading her work. I hope she continues to write.

Read this last night and Bella infuriated me. I'm trying to be patient with her submissive behavior but I cannot comprehend why she couldn't just hash it out with Edward to begin with.
Edward was also such an egotistical jerk. If he is intuned with her as much as he *thinks he is than how in the world could he, in his 80+ years of "living", not have a clue in how Bella would react? He always thinks he knows what is best for her but he really has no idea.

I just don't understand how two people who love each other so much, not know how the other would feel, react or respond. I just can't fathom it. So yeah, this chapter didn't necessarily make me sad, more like irritated at the main characters.

In my experience, this is how many relationships are. People are afraid and things go unsaid...even when both of them really love each other. This is a big reason why relationships fail.

Poor communication = bad relationship. Anybody will tell you that. So yes,
you're right.

The first time I read this chapter I immediately knew why he was leaving, he loves Bella too much, he was only thinking about her, he didn't stop to think about his own pain, so i don't think he was egotistical, he was thinking about her future, her happiness, the things he would take away from her once she became one of them, and the constant danger she would be in if she remained human and he & his family were part of her life. I really couldn't blame him for not wanting her to be like them, he knows Rosalie would have given anything to be human again, he thinks he is a monster, would you want the person who is the most important thing for you in the whole world to become what you are if you thought of yourself like he does. He has "lived" for many many years but he has never been in love so he probably guessed she was going to suffer but he was hoping she would move on. I was sad for Edward and irritated at Bella, how could she not have guessed he left her because he was trying to protect her after he had told her before " I wasn't going to live without you"..oops boss is here! gotta go back to work...:)

This is one argument I just don't understand. Someone who truly loves
another would not treat that other person in such a controlling way. My
husband would never dream in doing such a thing to me. Never. To me there
was absoulutely no good excuse for doing what he did. I think he came to
realize that eventually which is good, and that's why he even regretted
doing it, but since we're talking about this chapter I can say it was an
egotistical decision. He thought only of her safe physically and totally
disregarding what she thought and felt to the situation as if it didn't
matter.

I understand your point of view, but I just don't think we can compare Edward to a normal human being, he's not even a normal vampire.(lol)
Edward chooses to "ignore" Bella's opinion because he's determined to save her. Edward thinks vamps have no souls, Carlisle thinks they're damned, he tells Bella he still hopes there is a point to their lives. Edward knows what is like to deny your own nature, he has been fighting with himself to keep Bella alive since he met her, he knows the suffering she will go thru if she is turned and the things she will need to leave behind. Edward truly believes she deserves a life he cannot give her. I think Edward would have been egotistical if he had turned her into a vamp. just to make things easier for himself. Leaving her to me was the biggest proof of his love for her, he didn't care he had lost everything he had, he has been alone for an eternity and yet he still chooses to let her go. He was thinking of her the whole time and that is selfless. Was he cruel? Yes, but in his point of view "ignoring" her was better than condemning her to a soulless existence. I understand his motivation and the sacrifice he went thru. I didn't like what he did but I really couldn't blame him for trying to do the right thing. :D

I don't have a problem with him leaving her...he probably should not have
got involved to begin with but where would we all be? :) That isn't my
issue. My issue is how he left her...how all the Cullens were in on it.
They all thought that this was the best way to do so? I would've expected
Carlisle to offer up some sort of advise. There would have been such better
ways for him to do this and that is what I fault him and his family for. I
think he has the intelligence and "life" experience (knowledge for that
matter since he can read people's minds) so I think his actions are
inexcusable. I'm sorry, I may sound like a hard as*, lol, but I really
don't find what he did forgivable. Take that back, I'd forgive him but I
wouldn't forget and he certainly shouldn't have got a second chance...but I
think Bella is pretty spineless so there you go.

God!!! It would be so cool if SM wrote one of those extras for this chapter, I want to know what the discussion was between the Cullens and Edward, I'm sure Alice and Carlisle would have said something to stop him. I want to know how he convinced them to leave!!!:D

Yes, but what is he to take away her choice? A lover wouldn't do that. A partner wouldn't do that. A parent does that for a 2 year old. A monarch does that for the peasants.

So Edward is either her lover who discusses things or her monarch who makes decisions that HE feels is best for her, without her input.

Last time I checked this book was written to take place in the good old USA where Democracy, not socialism ruled...

Sadly, this is how relationships are. Too much reading between the lines, not enough real communication. Lovers, partners, even friends do it all the time. The ability to "choose" what happens to you isn't always that clear-cut.

I think democracy is relative, not absolute. There's a lot of give and take, a lot of learning from mistakes in relationships--one of the things that makes them so hard, so fragile.

My relationship with my husband is NOT like this so no. I think you have a skewed idea of how they really work.

and yes, the vampires are the danger and edward knew that. he always knew that he's danger for bella. and that became evident when even his brother jasper attacked bella with just a papercut and thats why he left her. to let bella live a normal life.

and he didnt leave her to go and track victoria. he didnt know that victoria would plot a revenge for him -- since she's terrorizing bella -- remember they go for their mate. i dont think victoria would try to hunt edward since he's a vampire too. so she went for bella instead.

and yes, i agree with u. the wolves became bella's lifesaver there. couldnt disagree with u on that one. if it werent for them, bella would be dead long before she could learn how to ride the motorcycle and jump cliffs. ^_^

Sadly living a long time doesn't make a person perfect. Edward had no experience with being in love or having a relationship so he had to learn the hard way what that was all about. He misjudged just how much Bella loved him, how much pain he would cause Bella and himself.

I think he tried to be objective about his feelings for Bella and his despair about a relationship between them which he felt would damn her for all eternity. He totally misjudged but his motives were pure. He learned his lesson and was fortunate it all worked out for them.

Preach it!!! I feel exactly as you do...im still not done venting from my previous comment so here it goes.....I was Team Jacob for a moment for a good while there (until he started to become and ass), but seriously so many other ways Edward could have approached this...if he does have so much life experience and is a gentleman, he should not have left her cold turkey like that! At least break up, stick around school for awhile and go through that ackward post-breakup phase (like Jessica and Mike) , have her become angry at you etc...I mean c'mon, this was Bella's first real boyfriend and relationship! She loved him but didnt know how to respond because she is unexperienced and feels like she was never good enough for him anyway (Edward was way out of her league and she was just a fragile little human), anyway I think im done venting for now....

The line in chapter 3 that takes me away is when she is being told that he doesnt want her and how its just cant sink in so well. Her catatonic state is just horrid and heartbreaking and anyone can relate to that themselves. right here

His mouth twisted the tiniest bit. When he finally looked up, his eyes were
different, harder—like the liquid gold had frozen solid.

eyes were like topaz—hard and clear and very deep. I felt like I could see into
them for miles and miles, yet nowhere in rheir bottomless depths could I see a
contradiction to the word he'd spoken.
"Well, that changes things." I was surprised by how calm and reasonable my
voice sounded. It must be because I was so numb. I couldn't realize what he was
telling me. It still didn't make any sense.

Bella tries to be controlled, rein in her emotions, shut down. I hope people don't fault Kristen if this is the way she plays it. Might seem as if she is not acting like she's in pain but she is holding it all in. The screaming, crying and pleading will come later...at home, in her bed...and then more silence.

It was kinda hard to believe that somebody like Edward would think that his existence will not cause anything to a simple human. I mean, his the epitome of a perfect guy. How could he even think that he cannot leave an impact on someone? But then again, like what everybody said, if it wasn't for that one line, the rest of their love story wouldn't be so great.

Unlike most of the people on here, even though it breaks the heart, I understand Edward's logic completely.

He left to protect her. But that wasn't how he wanted it to turn out. It's very hard to explain.

Also another thing is that, Edward isn't perfect. No one is. I'm not saying "He's abusive and mean." No! Just that he does have flaws. Just like Bella.

And for those who criticize edward for taking bella's things (pIctures, Cd). maybe we need to stop and think why he did it. Did he do it to be cruel? Does that sound like Edward. NO. He did it because he wanted bella to go on with her life. to forget about him. forget that he even exists. He did not want to leave any pictures, CD or anything that reminded bella of him. He wanted her to forget him completely as if he never existed. In his mind he felt that if bella had any reminders of him she would not forget him and get on with her life. This is also the reason why he told her he did not want her. He knew that bella would continue holding on to his memory unless she really believed that. Am i saying that what he did was right. No. And he himself came to see the error of his ways. One of Edward's flaws is that he overeacts and he seems to think that he knows whats best for bella and because of this he makes mistakes. Everything he did, he did with the best of intentions even if it meant sacrificing his happiness.

I understand him and I actually felt worse for Edward than Bella, knowing he would always love her and having to leave her knowing that it would hurt her but hoping he was doing the right thing and that she would move on. Edward has no expirience with relationships either, he didn't know how to be close to her in the beggining...yeah he's not perfect but he always tries to do the right thing and i like that about him....( love you Edward):D

So many good, deep, and thoughtful comments have been made so far....I love reading them! All I can say about this part of the book is that it is UTTER HEARTBREAK. The feelings of devastation were described perfectly by Ms Meyer and I cried so much while reading those words. Brings back memeories of break ups that I have experienced...that we have ALL experienced.

Ok , so I was sooo mad at Edward when he left..... UURRRGGGG!!! My book went air born like ten times !This book was the hardest book for me to read , I really almost put down not to open it again ! As I read every chapter I thought I was going to go out of my mind " WHEN IS HE COMING BACK ?" . My boyfriend thought I was going crazy ! I was always talking/yelling at the book, and sometimes I wondered my self ! Anyway Stephenie Meyer said once that we all need to read New Moon more than once , it was hard but I did and I still do not like it or Jacob that much ! I have read the other three like 10 times each but New Moon only two and a half times it was just too depressing . With that being said I am sure I will love the movie , it looks like its going to be great !!!!

I agree that it kind of sucked that all that stuff was gone, but he knew her so well. She would have sat and obssessed over it, beat it up, torn it to shreds, then cried over it all again. He was trying to do whatever he could to help her "move on".

His ignorance about her feelings towards him and his own self-loathing provoked him into leaving her. HE never, ever felt good enough for her... and he refused to accept just how much she loved him because then he would have to accept the fact that they really did belong together and that, one day, she would join him in vampire life.

Silly man, he thought he could change his woman's "mind" by upsetting her and taking away any and all reminders so that she would forget. (For all of that mind reading, he really didn't know women that well... we don't forget.)

What he didn't realize was that he wasn't trying to change her mind, he was trying to change her heart and soul. Impossible. The only thing to be gained by upsetting the heart and soul is pain. He tried to remove the evidence, but that didn't change the fact: he was part of her heart and soul.

I agree, it was an annoying move to hide all of her things, but it was SO "Edward" of him to do so and think that it would make any d**m difference. He ALWAYS underestimated Bella. (should've listened to Alice "Don't underestimate Bella.")

Ya know what I always wondered about: Remember how Bella sends her mom the doubles of the pictures? And Edward says he'll drop them off in the mail - do you think he took out the pics of him?? If not, Bella should have asked her mom to send those back ASAP. ;-)

I wondered about the doubles, too. I guess Bella was so broken up she just didn't think.

The fact that Edward offered to mail the letter with the pictures in it when he knew what he was going to say later makes me think that maybe he took out the pictures of her with him though, maybe to keep for himself--just because he wanted her to live like he never existed, I never felt that he would not torture himself with her memory.

I remember the first time reading New Moon and how shocking it was that Edward left.

I was shocked when i 1st read it but because of her and jacob's friendship i was quick to forget about it.
But yes it is a pretty emotional tense part in the book.

OK. Seriously, I am so depressed and miserable today, and it’s all EDWARD CULLEN’S fault. It is absolutely amazing how much these characters influence and impact our lives, isn’t it? *wiping tears away so I can see to type clearly.*

I hate this chapter. I cried almost the whole way through it the first time, and still cry. There is just so much in this chapter that kills me, and it is all so very important to the story.

First, backing up just a bit. Throughout Chapters one and two, and all the way through Twilight, SM leads us up to this carefully. All the way, we see Bella’s thoughts of unworthiness in regards to Edward. She constantly refers to feeling out of balance in the relationship, feeling amazed that he wants to be with her, waiting for him to realize that he could “do so much better”. That’s a big thing, because it is why she so quickly believes that Edward doesn’t love her.

Back to Chapter 3. First, the distancing. That morning, when he meets her and she can senses the aloofness. Their silence throughout the day. Her discovering Alice is gone. His apparent uncaring about coming over to her house. They have to show how he treats her that night. The whole sitting with Charlie and ignoring her – it truly shows what is to coming, and to me is pivotal in exploring just how he is setting her up for the ultimate – his leaving.

I want the contrast in pictures as well – where she takes the scrapbook and looks at the pictures, comparing their happy times to those of that night. Again, that sense of inequality she feels, when she folds the picture to only show him.

Renee’s letter. When he offers to take it for her… the first time I read it and got to the end of the chapter, I just KNEW that he didn't mail those pictures to Renee. He wouldn't keep the letter, I think, but I just KNOW he took the pictures out. I wonder if he kept the ones with Bella, or if he put them in the floorboard – if he took them, maybe he would destroy them later unable to have a physical reminder of her?

The breakup scene. “You …don’t… want me.” “You’re no good for me, Bella.” “We’re easily distracted.” “It will be as if I never existed.” Her realization that everyone else is gone as well. Her trying to follow him.

When Sam finds her and brings her to Charlie. When the doctor tells him the Cullens are gone. When Charlie hears about the bonfires at the reservation.

For me, the hardest part is when Bella goes to her room and discovers that he took EVERYTHING. The CD, the pictures…it just made me sob. I hated Edward for that.

“I hoped I was fainting, but, to my disappointment, I didn’t lose consciousness. The waves of pain that had only lapped at me before now reared high up and washed over my head, pulling me under. I did not resurface.”

Then, one of the most effective ways of showing the ultimate pain and loss, the last four words of the chapter:

I actually can't bring myself to reread NM, its too painful!!! I am interested in reading the other book you mentioned, the one from Edwards POV, can you tell me where I can find it? I tried to google it but no luck. I am dying for SM to continue and release Midnight Sun. I think I have read that more than any other book in the series!!

aw, I'm so sorry to make you go searching like that! It's rated Teen so I can actually give you the full title & author. It's over on fanfiction.net, and it's called Dark Side of the Moon, by blondie aka robin. Be warned, though, it is painful as well. Blondie used Midnight Sun as her reference, and kept it to canon. It parallels New Moon, and just really brings home what it must have been like for Edward.
I hope you enjoy it! I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to read more of Edward's POV. Good luck! :)

I think I was in the same shock Bella was in during this chapter. I had no emotional reserves to cry. I had no emotions at all. EC was gone. :( :(

But still, its ironic that EC left BS when a member of his family tried to hurt her, he just up and left... but Jacob knew the wolves were dangerous but he still found a way to be with Bella and protect her at the same time!!!.... alot of plp say J is immature but he made a very mature decision he trusted Bella, he knew how much it hurt her to be away from him, he put her want infront of what is right, he promised not to leave her and he didnt break that promise,,,,..Edward on the other hand made a decision for Bella, its not what she wanted but he decided its what she needed he didnt consider her feelings, he broke the promise to never leave her!!..

This chapter and the book hit me like a ton of bricks the first time I read it. Never has any book or movie expressed teh excat way I felt when I lost the love of my life. Just so hard to read without breaking down... Still I love it

For me it would be pretty hard to believe that he didn't love me anymore (not that he would ever want to). Like he says later in the book-

"But how could you believe me? After all the thousand times I've told you I loved you, how could you let one word break your faith in me?"

He is a very good lair. But just to think that she DID believe him is amazing. It's not possible that he couldn't love after everything that happened with each other. It's not. If it was me, I would be crying by the time he said that his famly was leaving. I must admit that Bella is strong, she really is. To be able to go through that much pain for that many months is incredible. I wouldn't last a day. But just think, if she would have started crying or something like that, he would have stayed. He wouldn't have been able to see her in pain. And you all say how he reacted when he saw what she looked like when he was gone.

New moon is a wonderful book, I think it's becoming my favorite now that I dig deeper into it.

I tell people it's my 2nd favorite and they think I'm crazy. The first time, I hated it...of course. Like everyone else, I wanted Edward back. However after reading it many more times after that, I LOVE the emotional conflict of this book. I love how she forces herself to push through. I've been here. SM gets it perfectly! I mean...of course we know that all's well that end's well. The first time reading it, I didn't know that. Ya know?

This was the hardest book for me too.... and this was by far the hardest chapter for me to read... I had to re-read it when I was reading the book for the first time to make sure I read it right...... It was... so heart-breaking, and how depressed Bella will get.... OME how could you do that...... =( sad chapter...
