Article from the local paper. Are Zombies the new Vampires? Personally I think not.

"Vampires are everywhere these days, biting at you from the covers of glossy magazines and haunting your multiplex and channel-surfing dreams.

Surely it won’t be long before there’s a vampire on “The Bachelor” or cooped up in the “Big Brother” house.

Nothing against vamps, but I prefer my undead a little less beautiful and media savvy and a lot more bloodthirsty. In a word: zombies.

Now, it’s not as if zombies have been ignored. “Zombieland,” starring Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin, was No. 1 at the box office last weekend. “World War Z” and “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,” both based on best-selling books, are coming in 2010 and 2011, respectively.

And director George Romero has made a 40-year career out of sequels to his 1968 flick “Night of the Living Dead.” His latest: “Survival of the Dead.”

But, of late, zombies have been taking a back seat to the fang-boys, and it’s time to put things right. Here are five reasons why zombies rule:

1. My undead can beat up your undead.

Ghosts can be scary (“Poltergeist”), but they can also be romantic (“Ghost”). And sure, no thinking young girl really wants to bring Count Orlok, the creepy vampire at the center of the 1922 film “Nosferatu,” home to meet Mom and Dad. But a lot has changed in almost a century.

For the past 50 years or so — from “Dark Shadows’ ” Barnabas Collins to “Interview With the Vampire’s” Lestat to “Twilight’s” Edward Cullen and “True Blood’s” Bill Compton — vampires have become increasingly moody, broody and seductive. But if ghosts can be romance and “Unchained Melody,” and vampires are now all emo and Death Cab for Cutie, zombies are just straight-up gangsta and N.W.A.

2. 24-hour party people.

Granted, vampires have the super-human strength going for them, and they can be as smart as Bill Gates’ accountant. But vampires have one big flaw: They’re mostly useless during the day. And don’t get me started on werewolves, which are frightful only at night, one night of the month. Big whoop. (Technically they aren’t undead, either, but if you believe the “True Blood” saga or the BBC America series “Being Human,” they have an interesting relationship with vampires.)

Zombies may be as dumb as a pudding cup, but they are zombies all day long, every day, forever. Or until someone shoots them in the head. There’s none of this anguish about transformation and duality of human nature. For zombies it’s kill, eat. Lather, rinse, repeat.

3. Walk this way.

The biggest controversy in the zombie community, of course, has been which is better: fast zombies vs. slow zombies. “Night of the Living Dead” perfected the slow-motion shuffle of zombie ambulation, but in recent years, the “Dawn of the Dead” remake, “28 Days Later” and its sequel “28 Weeks Later,” and now “Zombieland,” among others, have given us zombies worthy of Olympic time trials.

In either case, zombies tend to work in huge packs, overpowering their prey through sheer force of flesh-feeding numbers.

4. Dead man laughing.

Zombies can have a sense of humor — or at least the people who make movies about them can. The 2004 British film “Shaun of the Dead,” the 2007 mock-doc “American Zombie,” the 2007 satire “Fido” (in which a zombie is kept as a household pet) and now “Zombieland” show that zombies can laugh at themselves. Or that we can laugh at them. Vampires? Not so much.

5. Zombies now, zombies forever.

If zombies are hard to live with, they’re harder to kill. After the apocalypse, there won’t be any vampires lounging around in their posh mansions. But zombies, like cockroaches, will still be here. Will Smith found that out the hard way in “I Am Legend.”

Ok I'm going to go off course and rant a little bit. Not much is happening around here so I can get away with it.

I only saw parts of The Vampire Diaries tonight and I'm getting slightly annoyed with it. Don't get me wrong, I like watching it but the comparisons to Twilight are too damn eerie now.

This is what I remember (and my opinion on a few) in no particular order:

1. Stefan is like Edward-lite. I'm not digging his hair either. Thank God they didn't try giving him a bouffant though. I would totally boycott the show.

2. Damon aka "Boonepire" is a bad @ss vampire. Loved him on Lost, hence the name. I would let him bite me anytime.

3. Someone said that Stefan is ripping off Edward or whatever. To an extent yes. But he reminds me of Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Mannerisms et all.

4. Faux Bella, I mean Elena has a psychic friend Bonnie a la Alice Cullen.
Instead of seeing the future, she gets flashbacks from the past. She has a history of Salem Witches in her family. Her grandma was played by Jasmine Guy. (A Different World) No vampire relation, just wanted to throw that in.

5. Stefan said his ring or something (not sure, need to watch full episode to check) is the "family CREST" WHAT? Like the Cullen Crest. COME ON, where is the originality?!

6. Boonepire made fun of Twilight last week. Enough said.

7. The entire show is from Elena's POV like Bella. Wow, didn't see that coming.

8. Elena did research like Bella did on the computer to find out what Stefan really is. She shows up at his house all angsty like "What are you?!"

9. So help me God if he answers "Say it out loud" I will throw something at my T.V.

10. Elena whispers "vampire" *close up of her face*

UGH!!! Stop the copy catting please! I want to keep enjoy watching this show but the similarities have to stop.

11. I am so happy that Vicky bit the dust. Haha Go Damon bite that @#$%@ !!!!!!!!! She was so annoying, only wanting to hook up with Elena's little brother and get high all the time. NEXT!!

12. I'm rooting for Damon to turn Caroline into a vampire and they will rule that town.

13. What's up with the adults in that town that are in on the secret of the "creatures" or whatever word they used.

That is all.

You know what irks me the most.
When they're asked about the Twilight thing, the Vampire Diaries' cast keep saying that like, "Oh yeah.. yeah.. Twilight.. well, OUR series was based on the books which were published WAY before Twilight"...


Um, hello?

That took you THIS LONG to turn that book series of yours into a TV show?
THIS LONG?! Took you almost 20 DAMN YEARS to turn it into a show?

And the producers were like, "oh hey. twilight is the new "in" thing. so why don't we make this 20-year-old book series into a show?! awesome marketing! damn, my boss is gonna give me a raise in my salary for this idea!"


UHH. NO. NO. NO. It's too late.

I don't give a care how long ago their books were written. They are still riding on Twilight's coattails. Stupid studio execs that think they know everything.

I mean look at the new movie that's about to come out: The Vampire's Assistant" No thanks I'll wait for New Moon to come out.

Ah you reminded me...about Unbound Captives..I saw new Hugh's interview and his play on Broadway ends in December and he said he'll need a long break...he coldn't say when they'll start with UC. In fact he couldn't confirm anything about it for now. It seems Rob will do Bel Ami first, if it's still on for the beginning of 2010...it's all so confusing.

He said Bel Ami is going to be filmed in Paris...so I guess no. I never understood how actors managed to film two or three movies or more in one year. I was always surprised when I see that they filmed so many movies one after another. I have a headache even when I try to figure it all out haha.

I think I heard that they would be filming Bel Ami in France but that would give him a chance to get home to England in his down time from filming, I think.

I think it will be possible to film three movies in a yr., remember, his role in Unbound Captives only takes up maybe a third of the movie--when his character is an older teenager, I think (maybe, by the time they film it, a young adult?)

Hopefully its a mild case that only keeps you on your back for only 2 weeks. WARNING! You WILL get sick again even before your energy returns. I've talked to several people who had the swine ended up getting a sinus infection. I got that AND an ear infection.
