Sure. My office has a power outage, so MEC posts earlier than usual. :P Anyway...
Alright. There is absolutely NO lightness in this chapter at all. It is just dark and terrifying. This is another chapter I don’t particularly like Billy in. Bella is understandably worried about her friend. So much so, that not only does she repeatedly call, she physically goes to the hospital to see if he is there. She researches his supposed illness, talks Charlie into finding out what’s going on, and is generally worried sick. Then, to call again, only to have Billy just brush her off and tell her that Jake’s fine, but out with friends… and then hang up on her? Gah!

An interesting little bit in this chapter that’s small, but important. Harry. To be honest, I totally missed the significance of the phone call the first time I read this. We saw it a few chapters back, when Sue tried to get Harry to eat some “greens”. We see it now – he was in the hospital, getting tests… and it’s serious enough that Charlie is worried. How many of us completely missed all of this the first time around? To be honest, even in my re-reads, I hadn’t really paid a lot of attention to it, until this time.

I appreciate Bella’s thoughts of not being allowed to see Jacob, how it makes her nervous – she realizes just how much she has come to depend on him, and that being without him is unthinkable. For me, this quote says it all: “The hole in my chest was worse than ever. I’d thought that I’d been getting it under control, but I found myself hunched over, day after day, clutching my sides together and gasping for air. I wasn’t handling alone well.” Her thoughts about how the week apart had not had the same effect on Jake… the words she uses: lonely, worried, bored, perforated and desolate… ugh.

Charlie’s realization that Bella is sad and lonely is touching. His hesitation to leave her alone again, breaks my heart. He is so very aware of her, and just wants her to be OK.

The meadow. “The disappointment was nearly as instantaneous as the recognition. I sank down right where I was, kneeling there at the edge of the clearing, beginning to gasp. What was the point of going any farther? … There was nothing special about this place without him….”

Laurent. I like the description of emotions Bella experiences, then her honest thought, “I probably should have stopped at fear.” Their conversation, with all the little parts that poke at her… his calling the Cullens by name, mentioning that Edward must not care terribly much about her, comparing her to a pet. I can’t imagine the fear she felt, mixed with the pain. Then, the beautiful velvet voice. “Was I not in the worst danger imaginable? The motorcycle was safe as kittens next to this.” Her difficulty in saying “Edward”…

I had a minor epiphany. Bella comments about Jasper having difficulty with his control, and Laurent asks if that is why the family left. She answers, “No”. But, in a way, isn’t he right? It was Jasper’s slip that triggered Edward’s misguided attempt to keep Bella safe by having the family leave… just my theory, of course.

I love that her “last thoughts” are of Edward. “His name burst through all the walls I’d built to contain it. Edward, Edward, Edward. I was going to die. It shouldn’t matter if I thought of him now. Edward, I love you.”

Enter the wolves. I can’t begin to fathom the feelings Bella was dealing with at this point. The recurring pain, certain death, then mystical-sized wolves? And now the only question is which will kill her? And still, she takes a moment to think of Jacob, and is grateful that he is not here to die as well… which was rather ironic, in hindsight, yes?

They say that constant fear wears on you physically. This is most evident in Bella’s run for her life. For, to her, this is exactly what it is. She has nowhere to go, and is well aware of Laurent’s capabilities… and the wolves don’t look very gentle, either. It’s no wonder that Charlie was concerned when he saw her. I can only imagine her appearance to him. I like that Charlie’s question gives Bella hope that Jake is working things out with Embry. But that fear comes back, overtaking her again. Locking the doors, pondering the possibilities with Laurent, Victoria or the wolves… “There was nothing I could do. There was no place I could hide. There was no one who could help me.” And her recognition that Charlie is in danger as well. “My good vampires were never coming back; how soothing it was to imagine that the other kind could also disappear.”

Yeah, this is not a light chapter.

Ok, chick, I need a cupcake after reading all of that. I think I missed my child's first steps. And possibly the NM premiere. What day is it?

J/K. I love that you are all up into this. Yeah, Bella's emotions in dealing with multiple WTF moments at once. How did she not just faint or black out or something? Not only is a vampire getting ready to kill you, but you are hearing Edward's voice, you are being introduced to a wolf pack that you think may kill you too, and plus you are in Edward's meadow.

Geez.

I love this commentary on the chapter! I love how personal you made it! (and I have not re-read it yet either, sigh. BUT NMM is SUCH an addiction!)

Just thought I would add that for some reason on my first read of the book, I did catch that first foreshadowing at Billy's about Harry. I am chalking it up to being an EMT and always having to be aware people don't always give you pertinent information when the questions is asked directly.

As for the Jazz comment, don't we later find that a Cullen (I can't remember who, if any actually did - FF starts to get in the way of my memory) did indeed go up to Denali so they would have known what was going on... Therefor giving Laurent the information in advance? (even if he wasn't directly told)

what bella goes through in this chapter is just Woooo! alot!..she has to deal with alot, she felt alone, isolated with no friends no one to help her, no hero to come and rescue her! and during that time she was still worried about Jake and Charlie.
i didn't like Billy at all during the times when Jake was going through the changes, and you have gotta feel for charlie poor guy seeing you only daughter, the only family you have left just waisting away right infront of your eyes must have been really hard for him...he didnt know what to do, he's a police officer his meant to help people,keep them from harm and he didnt know how to help the person that meant the most to him!

I couldn't agree more, loved your interpretation of the chapter. I'm really enjoying the re-read. Like so many other fans, I read through the book quickly, I didn't want to hear about Jacob I just wanted to get back to the story of B&E. The second time I read NM again, I agonize over the beginning and allowed myself to get caught up in it and be sad etc.
Now, that I'm reading slowly and taking time to think about each chapter, plus I know the depths of the characters, I really enjoy dissecting it apart. Not to be critical but to understand so much more of the story. The in between the lines stuff you miss the first 2x. This Chapter and Chapter 11 are now some of my new faves. I was miserable reading NM but now, I think it's my fave next to the original. I mean I couldn't love NM w/o Twi.

Agreed! I'm really loving sitting down and thinking these things through... it's like my 9th or 10th time re-reading, and between what I am seeing, and reading other people's thoughts & perspectives, it's just opening it up so much more to me!

Stephanie Meyer, in my oppinion, isnt the best write to ever grace the planet (the stories may be beyond amazing, my favourite books alongside Harry Potter, but I dont think she's the greatest writer), however, she does have moments of brilliance. This is not my favorite chapter. Although necessary for the plot, it makes whiney-hole-in-the-belly-Bella return for an encore and I was happy to see her beat street after she got those bikes from the Marks'.

When's Alice getting back again? That was my favorite part of this book...I was seriously jumping up and down clapping when she showed up. And yes, I am a complete and total goober - it's been confirmed by many already so no big surprise there.

Bella is such a glutton for punishment in NM. I want to sympathize with her, but geez if she isn't a whiney little tail.

My favorite part about this whole chapter is that Bella is actually excited to see Laurant...""Laurant" I cried in surprised pleasure."she knew it was "an irrational response" as she puts it, but it just makes that connection that Bella is looking for between her and the magical world so real.. I cant really put my finger on it, but I just love that part and how true to herself Bella truely is.

"Yes fear would have made more sense, but all I felt was an overwhelming satisfaction. The meadow was a magic place again. A darker magic than I expected, to be sure, but magic all the same. Here was the connection I'd sought. The proof, however remote, that-somewhere in the same world where I lived-he did exist."

I dont know, maybe this all sounds too wierd to make sense to anyone.

Not weird at all, I feel the same way. It's a perfect display of just how hard she's trying to find a link to Edward and his world. When I read it I have the same reaction as Bella to Laurent, I'm pleased he's there.

Then I start thinking why didn't Alice see Laurent in the meadow? Then Edward would have come back so much faster! But before the wolves show up and blind her view, why doesn't she see Bella in danger.

OK so there is one small tiny bit of humor I found in this chapter.... It is when Bella goes to bed after coming back from the meadow..
Pg. 249 I paused to check the locks again before I went to my room. It was a silly thing to do. What difference would a lock make to any o the monsters I'd seen this afternoon? I assumed the handle alone would stymie the wolves, not having opposable thumbs. *bursts out laughing* AAAHHHAHAHAHAHA
That one line just cracks me up.
Maybe I have some sick humor lol but it's still funny...

It is in a different language, but I translated it (took my best shot) and the words seemed like they fit so well with Bella’s heartache. This one ties in with harpers Bazaar magazine. How Kristen finds it Romantic if the person doesn't lie and is honest. Well she always says how honest Rob is and how he just can't lie. This part of the book reminds me of the flashback in Twilight when Edward sucked the venoms out of her. This might comes as surprise but I actually like that scene in the movie.
I was imagined something like that while I was reading this part of the book.

I liked that scene in the movie too!! I thought the scene was better in the book though. I hope SM finishes MS soon so we can read that part from Edwards perspective..

hey, i agree. my reasons aren't exactly the same, but i know what you mean. i hated NM as a book, and i don't want to put myself through it again. LOL

I will admit, it is my least favourite in the saga.

The worst part is it was 4 days straight! I didn't read them until all four were out and I bought the set. It was crazy. When I was done, it was like I didn't even know what day it was. LOL

I'm sort of neutral about Breaking Dawn. I don't *hate* it like some people do, but I'm still not 100% sure about the whole Renesmee thing. It would have been nice to have a little uninterrupted E/B time.

Eclipse is by far my favorite. I actually just talked my husband into reading the series (woohoo!) and Eclipse is his favorite so far. He's only a few chapters into Breaking Dawn though, so that could change.

I did the same thing. That's why I was so glad I re-read them all because I was so tired in the middle of the night reading that I was missing things....but I just couldn't stop! Each time I read them now, I try to only read an hour or two at a time, so I don't 'Zombie Read'!!

Clearly Charlie must be either the WORST police chief in history (he misses so much like boys in Bella's room, c'mon old house and no creaking floor boards with heavy vamp or wolf???? AND doesn't push his daughter to get help even though as police chief he knows about section 12's, etc... He doesn't know how to search for her when she is missing for more than 24 hours? - She needed her passport to get out of the country so she DID leave a trail...) OR he is an extremely under developed character...

Sometimes parents see what they want to see to an extent. They have hope things will get better without having to go to extremes (example: actually having Bella see a shrink or institutionalized). I am a mom and pay close attention to my little one, but I know parents who simple glance over the bad - "they'll grow out of it, they'll snap out of it, it's growing pains" etc ... I think Charlie is simply guilty of sugar coating situations with his near adult daughter and finding it easier to accept her lies than delve too deeply into the truth. He pretty much says as much in BD - "Need to know".

Shall I introduce you to a couple of chiefs I have met in my hayday? They usually get there because of political reasons and aspirations and their ability to delegate responsibility and people skills.

Plus, how much does a Chief have to deal with in Forks?

I still think it is a situation with not being able to be as objective with your own flesh and blood. You should hear some of the situations cops have with their own kids.

To give Charlie a little credit, it's not like he's the police chief of New York City or Los Angeles or somewhere. He's the head cop of Forks, Washington. What was the population there? (100 people?.... j/k) And remember Bella had been wandering through the woods after Edward for hours so she could have been pretty far out there. Plus, it was night, Bella wasn't answering and was curled up in a ball in the mud getting rained on. It took Sam Uley's wolf nose to find her.

Well, coming from a pretty small town myself, I do know that the Sheriff or Police Chief, call it what you may, probably never even went to college. So this is totally understandable to me. =D

My comment was based on the fact that I WORKED on a small town fire department AND every Fire and Police had to have their bachelors just to apply (Population less than 2,000)! The chief (who only just retired last year BTW) had to go back to school to get his... AND then go back for his doctorate too...

So Unless you have seen their resume or spoken to them, I wouldn't go making that comment (Everyone on both departments in my town would have taken offense to that)

WOW... ok didn't mean to hit that button! NO offense to anyone in your town, but I too was speaking from personal experience. I may not have worked there but the town is so freakin small that everybody knows everybody. Most police officers there did not go to college. My dad was a volunteer deputy sherrif and he didnt go past high school. And I was a volunteer firefighter for 4 years and I'm one of the only people who has been to college (I hadn't at the time). There's one small fire station in my county that has paid firefighters but I"m not sure about their requirements.

So I'm glad that there are small towns who are that strict. But my town could never afford to require that of all their employees. Even the State Police do not require a bachelor's degree.

Ok I see your point, BUT in situations like that... the full time or highest ranking officer is usually schooled. Think to your fire chief - he has training right? Because the rest of the department needs training (If you had no training how would you know how to put on an air pack or the importance of your hood, right?) Same thing with the police (and the dispatchers), training is required. So while your dad hasn't been to college I bet he has to do a certain amount of training every year or couple of years...

Even in small towns bad things happen that REQUIRE a certain amount of training... MVA's requiring extrication, people falling off hay balers and getting SERIOUSLY injured (my first EMT call ever), accidental shootings (um - hunting season...), and gun licensing. AND yes, murder or breaking and entering or shop lifting (yes even the smallest town has this issue, even if it is swept under the rug and is RARE). There ARE arrests made and someone has to be trained how. And while the OFFICERS had to have degrees in their field the general firefighter or detail 'cop' didn't. Training happened in the station by someone who WAS trained.

Agreed. Training is a very important aspect of police/fire work. Just to be a certified volunteer I had to complete 150 training hours. Given the difficulty that Bella gave them to find her, I just can understand how that might have taken awhile.

PS for everyone else -- In my comment above I WAS NOT stereotyping the small town police chief to be dumb. I was only saying that in my hometown, there are no paid police officers that are required to have a college degree, chief included. I understand that may be different elsewhere. And I apologize if any of you got the wrong idea.

The things I saw (shakes head) I live in the city now and REFUSE to work as an EMT here. I liked jumping out of bed to help my neighbors AND I hate teh idea of sitting on an ambulance for 8 or 12 hours and not being able to see my 'patients' or know their status. I loved that aspect of small town life.

Yes about Charlie! I like Charlie a great deal, but he's so damn obtuse. SM made it clear Charlie loves her, but he should have been more aware, more concerned, just more something! haha.

As far as what to see.. of course Edward's name breaking through the walls as Laurent gets ready to attack. Bella feeling a sense of familiarity when Jacob-wolf catches her eye. The fleeing from the wolves/Laurent and her reaction/Charlie's reaction when she tells him about them.

All in all.. want to see sadness, heartbreak, desolation from Bella in this chapter.. what with being upset over jake's absence, the wolves, Laurent, Edward being gone, etc.

Gotta feel futted for Bella. Like really, the meadow's such a symbolic place, and then she's attacked. Damn, that's some heavy sh!t she's gotta deal with.

From how I read it anyway, I don't think Charlie buys anything that Bella says. I think that he just goes along with it to try to get her to be better. He sees what he wants to see and is hoping against hope that his daughter gets better.

On another note, I love this chapter. Laurent showing up out of nowhere, seeing "Edward" in the text for the first time in forever.

And of course, the introduction of the wolves. Just great.

Bella was still irritating though. Bless her.

She wasn't as irritating to me on my first time reading this book. But now that I know exactly what's coming, it's extremely annoying.

I know. The first time I powered through the books so fast just to get to the end. But after rereading them multiple times, there are things that stand out more. Not just her, all of the characters have serious issues at time. But that is what creates conflict.

I agree with the Victoria thing, she probably had the mind frame.. Better you than me.

Billy I think acted within the nature of his character. He does not like the Cullen's.. didn't like that Bella was with the Cullens.. and now his son has been forced into this new wolf pack life style and they think it's the Cullen's fault. I don't agree with how he handled it, but I do understand why he was so short with Bella.

Charlie. I agree with CF911.. I don't think SM developed him enough to answer these questions. She might have felt it would have taken away from the story itself. I try not to nit pick at these little things like that, because we don't know enough about him to really understand the reasoning behind his choices. I just look at him as a father who barely knows his daughter, or what to do. A lot of times it causes the wrong reactions at the wrong times. Just my thought though.


Everyone knows that I constantly defend Bella, so I'm not gonna say much on that. lol I love her character, I can't help it. I'll just end with saying that every character, especially the protagonist, has to have their flaws. :)

Bella's flaws are what makes this series so great. Plus, the flaws are what make the books so relatable to everyone who reads them. Yay for imperfect characters!

well , the the thing that i liked about this chapter that Bella found the medow withoout Jacob help
i believe that the place would have lost it significance 4 Bella and Edward , if she and Jacob found it together

with Laurant thing , i dont know , i didnot think about it like u , i dont think Victoria thought that the Cullens will destroy him , bcoz he didnot side with James. i think sending him was a result of two things;
1, she must hae managed to make Laurant see he have a chance to cheat in his diet, which was not suposed to be Bella
2, he must have told her about Alice's ability to see the future, so she knows if she approached the Bella , the Cullens will know about it
so he will provide her an inside info 4 her next move

I agree with you about finding the meadow without Jacob, and I never thought about it before now. It is significant that she found it alone and that despite what goes down with Laurent and the wolves showing up, that its her and Edward's place and having Jake there with her would have tainted that a bit.

I think Jacob could have at least called Bella, just to let her know he was okay. And Billy could have come up with something better than mono! He could have been a little nicer to Bella on the phone as well, there was no reason for him to be rude.
Btw I think Bella is being a little bitchy in this chapter: ''I smiled and nodded as if I cared what my other friends thought'', she was lucky that some of here friends were kind enough to take her back after she ignored them for months.
''I felt a brief twinge of guilt as I realized how Charlie would feel about this, but I ignored it.'' Yeah just ignore the feelings of someone who cares about you and wants to keep you safe...
I love the part in the meadow...where Bella's like: I'm so glad to see Laurent!!, untill she realizes that his eyes are red and gets scared. I mean come on Bella, did you really think that Laurent would be completely vegetarian after just 6 months or so!!
Love it when Bella hears Edwards voice again. And when she says his name..she really can't lie...lol
And of course, the appearance of the wolves, I'm soo looking forward to seeing them kill Laurent *evil laugh*

Most of you wonderful ladies have said all that i wanted to say..

Seeing Edward's name for the first time was like a stab through my heart. I have a feeling the way Kristen is going to spill his name out in the movie is going to plunge a dagger through me.

And i can't wait to hear Rob say "Lie" like in the book. He is SO going to show up behind her and in his sexy, velvety voice say "Lie" just like he does in my head when i read that!

And of course... KILL ME... "Edward, Edward, Edward. Edward, i love you" Immediate bawling... sobbing uncontrollably. This is going to destroy me in the theater, Kristen is going to kill me with this, i know it. I love her. And i know it gets "action packed" after this whole exchange but, i have got to tell you... this whole scene and chapter is so emotional and i am there for the love story... there waiting for the reunion. :)

Oh and on an unrelated note, C911... "They're Bullets Mofo's" I LOVE IT!!! I adore you! :)

I love the conviction this guy has over everyone, he pulss it off so well. It's hard thinking that it isn't just Rob. Rob is just so perfect just like Edward. Perfection runs in their blood. Pen to paper it shouldn't work, but Rob pulls it off so well.

Ok, I'm TOTALLY addicted here. I'm trying to read one chapter at a time, but I'm failing miserably :*(. I read like a freak. I can complete NM in less than 4 hours. I swear, I've got weekends planned just to complete the set again.

Does anyone else read that freakishly fast?

So glad so many feel the way I do about Billy in this chapter. All I ever think every time he talks to her is why so cruel! He knows as well as Charlie the effect Jacob has been having on her and yet he can't care enough for his friend's daughter to give her some kind of comfort more than hanging up on her!! Ugh!

The first time I read this chapter and Jake wolf looks at her with "intelligent eyes" and she thinks of Jacob, I knew it was Jake, and now every time I read it after I fell so sorry for him cause he's right there with her and can't communicate with her and that has to be so frustrating.

"Edward, Edward, Edward, Edward I love you!" Is so perfect in that moment cause thats exactly what I would have done, and it breaks your heart to read it.

well this chapter makes thing more interesting first jacob pulls away from bella what is so sad because she not only lost edward but also jacob,by this point first time a read it i was thinking can this book become more depresing?? and then laurent comes back bringing vampires back to the game and tries to kill her by the way i loved edward's hallucination it was painfull but awesome specially when she brings her walls down and says "edward i love you" i mean i was like aaaaaaaaaaaa edward i love you too!! but anyway i didn´t think this scene would make it to the movie but im glad that it did, i also think it will we cool to see the wolf pack chasing laurent cause thats something the book doesnt allows us to see, well anyway i'm gonna finish saying that i do hate sam's jacob, i mean why jake? why are u so mean?? and i did think billy was way to rude, anyway dispite all that i was you wishing edwards surprising come back and that i didn't had to way to the end to see him again but anyways...............

Well this is another one of those chapters where i have to think the sometimes bella is not the sharpest tool in the shed (fastest vamp in the coven? biggest wolf in the pack? lol) First of all, she knows there are dangerous things out there and she also should have been able to figure out, after the Cullen Manor inceident, that the meadow would have caused her some serious pain so WHY WOULD SHE GO? Expecially ALONE! Not to mention she KNOWS she shouldn't trust her feet enough to hike around without someone to help her out should she fall and break something like only she could.

I love the way stephanie puts personality into the wolfs eyes in the meadow. The way she notes that there was more intelligence and depth then there should have been for an animal.

AAAAAND!!! duhn duhn duhn... jacob becomes a little douchey!
IM SORRY! i love the kid but ITS TRUE. He reminds me of one of those guys i would have junk-punched for being a wank to my friends. (I STILL LOVE HIM THO lol)

I always find it hard to believe that Bella just thinks he'll be like "Hey girl, what you been up to?" Obvi, he's gonna want to suck you dry.. Silly Bella..

this is the point where we realise that bella has a possesive and obsessive nature. she needed edward. then she lost him. then she became obsessed with him and the hallucinations. then she needed jacob. then she lost him. now shes obsessed with protecting him and spending time with him etc etc

i hate the fact that the hallucinatinos arent real. the first time i read the book, i honestly thought that it might be edward that was really looking out for her.. BUT HE DOESNT EVEN KNOW ABOUT IT !!! GRRRRRRR
