8? woohoo! Do you REALLY want to hear my comments? LOL Wow, you posted early! You already put in my favourite quote for this chapter, I agree wholeheartedly about Billy, as well. And yeah, how DID Bella' s subconscious know about treading carefully around Jacob? OK, here's my uber-long commentary:

The fear that Bella goes through these few weeks is not even imaginable. Waking up in the morning and not being able to breathe until she knew Charlie had survived as well? Thinking that Jacob avoiding her was a good thing because it was safer for him? But still, she misses him. “It had been bad enough to be alone before I was scared silly. Now, more than ever, I yearned for his carefree laugh and his infectious grin.” Wow. And even when she gets Jacob back, she doesn’t get that carefree laugh or infectious grin back with him…

Cute quote: “What was with these Quileute boys? Were they feeding them experimental growth hormones?” LOL

Quil. Poor Quil. We can see what he’s going through – losing his friends one by one, and being afraid that he will be next…When he describes stumbling through the forest for an HOUR, I get mad at Embry & Jacob. They let him wander around by himself for an HOUR?! What the hale? “I don’t want to be next.” Ouch. Hmmm… remind us of anyone?

Jacob. Gone is our happy-go-lucky, cheerful, smiling Jacob. His anger and bitterness are such a sharp contrast to everything we’ve seen of him before. The “breakup scene”… in my mind, second only to Edward breaking up with Bella. Now, I know this is all in Bella’s point of view, however, I can’t help but think of Jacob. He loves her. More than anything else, he knows what she is going through, and how much she has been hurt. And he has promised her never to hurt her like that… but now, all because of those filthy bloodsuckers, he is supposed to turn his back on all of that. Yeah, I’d be bitter and angry, too. He uses his anger as a shield in this chapter, and to push her away. I can relate to that, and it just makes me feel that much worse for him.

That whole scene just killed me, and it did Bella, too. My other favourite quote from this chapter: “Not as bad! Not as bad! my mind tried to comfort me. It was true. This wasn’t as bad. This wasn’t the end of the world, not again. This was just the end of what little peace there was left behind. That was all. Not as bad, I agree, then added, but bad enough. And poor Charlie, thinking he’s right back at square one: “Then he looked at my face. A kind of horrified recognition registered in his expression. I tried to feel my face from the inside out, to know what he was seeing. My face felt empty and cold, and I realized what it would remind him of.” I LOVE Charlie for calling Billy, and defending Bella. Billy may be his friend, but Bella is his family, and she comes first.

Her dream was horrible. Jacob turning into Edward, then vanishing… the ultimate loss, to lose both of them. And then, the noise…

Bella breaking down again just killed me inside too... but you have to realize JAcob couldnt help hurting her, he didnt chose to hurt her, he was bound to the ALpha's word! which is why he came back and broke the rules....Edward chose to hurt her!

I really enjoyed this chapter. I don't understand why some say that there's not much going on in this chapter. I think this has got EVERYTHING going on it! I like how we see the dynamic nature of Bella and Jacob's relationship. Bella needs Jacob. Jacob feels he can't be around Bella. Jacob "hurts" Bella, but also instantly feels bad for what he's doing to her. There are so many ups and downs in this chapter! (I love Charlie's conversation with Billy. I love how he's so protective of Bella and how he doesn't want her to go back into that depression.)

Kristen and Taylor said that this was their favorite scene to shoot. I cannot wait to see this on the big screen! It's going to be AWESOME!!!

There were a couple of things that I found interesting in this chapter.
I love the conversation between Bella and Jake alone. My fave part is pg. 267 -- "Don't you dare tell me I'm wrong -- I'm not the one who got brainwashed! Tell me now whose fault this all is, if it's not your precious Sam!"
"You asked for it," he growled at me, eyes glinting hard. "If you want to blame someone, why don't you point your finger at those filthy, reeking bloodsuckers that you love so much?"
I love her reaction to this. I can just see her standing there mouth wide open staring at Jake not being able to move. And then a few lines later when he says "the Cullens," is painful even for me. And the way that he notices what it does to her when she hears their name. So perceptive Jake, I love you for that.

I also love that she asks him if he's "breaking up" with her... and then again her reaction on pg. 273

This whole section (but one of the earlier chapters) is actually where I got my "DreamlessNights" name from!

One of the hardest parts of the whole breakup scene with Jake. Insult to injury three fold! Losing Jake and then to have him throw that into the arguement, total killer!

This is my first post - yeah! I know a lot of people get annoyed by Jacob after he transforms, so I just want to give a little perspective. He is already scared over the whole Sam gang thing, and then discovers he has become a monster. Not only is he suddenly a werewolf, a fate he would have never chosen, but he's told he's supposed to be their leader. He's no longer allowed to see Bella, they won't even let him talk to her on the phone. He promised he'd never hurt her, and he had fully intended on keeping that promise, but he is forced to break it, and break her in the process.

He finds out that Bella used him that day on First Beach to pump him for information about the Cullens. I can't even imagine how painful that was for him to discover. The pack (and probably Billy - perhaps this is why he's being such a jerk to Bella?) are mad at him for breaking the treaty - it could have caused a war. He already kind of hated Edward for hurting Bella so badly, and then he discovers that the Cullens are infact vampires, his mortal enemy, and that they are actually responsible for him becoming a monster.

Keep in mind Edward has had 100 years to get use to being a vampire. This is all brand new for Jacob. The poor guy is 16 years old and dealing with a lot all at once. Can you really blame him for not always handling it well?

How could any one person handle so much and not be expected to become a little hardened and cold in the process, even the perpetually happy and sunny jacob.

This is the chapter I really feel sorry for Quil. His friends are ignoring him & he has no clue :( Then Jacob starts being a jerk and I get so irritated with his mood swings. First Mad, then sad, then mad again. I know he is confused and has rules to follow, but he still irrates me in this chapter

Yes I agree.I hate Jacob when he is a jerk with Bella and with everyone.And he promised that"Bella I won't ever hurt you" but he does again and again and again..

He HAD to be "a jerk" because of the ALPHA order. He had no choice! And the only way he can see to get it through to Bella is to be "a jerk" to her, so that she will "leave him alone" as Sam wants, but it is what HE dreads.
SO sad for both of them, but like Embry says,

I know he was not rude with Bella or with Quil because he wanted to.He really had no choise and he was suffering when he had to do things but when I read it in the deep I was disappointed and frustrated.Of course I felt like this just in some parts of the New Moon and I like Jacob so much he is the BEST best friend.I would let him close to myself if he wanted to.lol

I agree about Quil. the whole "chasing around in the forest for an hour" made me mad at Jake & Embry...

But I think Jake's really suffering here. His mood swings are frusrating, however, I think I understand them. He has lost EVERYTHING in his mind. And he is breaking his promises to Bella. And has to say goodbye to her. If he's angry with her, maybe SHE'LL be the one to walk away, causing less pain for her. At least, I think that's what's going through his head.

I know so many people get frustrated with Jake and HIS frustration/anger.. but you're right, he has to do so many things against his will, and he loves her, of course he's going to be a pain in the a$$! lol. I feel so bad for both of them during their "break-up." :(

And to add a few other things: Charlie isn't always the most perceptive, or he is but chooses to not want to know, so it was nice to see him sticking up for his daughter for once to Billy.

Looking forward to the bedroom scene! When Jake gets frantic trying to get her to recall the stories. And I like the hint of uncertainty with Bella when she touches his chest - kind of foreshadowing, I guess, since touching him like that made her uncomfortable (as in she loves him but doesn't know it). And Charlie's reaction to seeing her nearly turn back into the zombie.

LOL - I couldn't resist, already read the bedroom scene... and yeah, thinking it through more thoroughly just shows so much more, doesn't it? SM is one clever woman... :D

It really does! I always suspected there was something more than just friendship with J/B.. and then after I read all the books and began re-reading, I caught all these little clues. hehe. ie: when Jake asks if his being half-naked bothers her and she says no, but blushes. Come on now, Bella, you know it does cause you like looking at his hot body! ;)

I just hope CH didn't screw it up. If you remember from the beach scene in TL, when Jacob told the scary stories he just said the Quiluete's were descended from wolves, not that they actually turned into wolves - as he explains in the book. So in NM he can say 'remember all those stories' and 'come on, you know this!,' he really means it.

I don't think he was a jerk for breaking the promises - remember, he had absolutely no control over that... I think he was a jerk in his anger towards Bella... I understand it, but I still don't like it... I agree with the frustration!

My favorite part, but it's also a very sad little line at the very end when Bellas going to bed and the quotes something like " Life seemed dark enough at the moment that I let myself cheat. The hole-holes-were already aching, so why not? I pulled out the memory-not a real memory that would hurt too much, but the memory of Edward's voice in my mind this afternoon-and played it over and over in my head until I fell asleep with the tears still streaming calmly down my empty face" I tear up EVERY time I read that. She's so helpless and I feel so bad for anyone who has to go through anything like this.

This was one of my favorite parts too. I really get upset with Edward at this point, cause she should have her lullaby cd to play to lull her to sleep!!! Not some false memory! But the pain she's in and the fear she has during this chapter makes it so hard.

I get what you are saying, but don't you think the lullaby would have hurt her more? I find that whole Bella being reckless thing to be so complicated. Bear with me while I try to sort out my thoughts....

Ok. Bella didn't want to hear music, read, do anything that reminded her of Edward, because it hurt too much. Yet, she went out of her way to ride motorcycles, go cliff diving, so that she could hear his voice. She never wanted Jacob or anyone to mention Edward's name. Am I missing something? Was there a point in the story where she gave that up? I am just so confused on that part of the story. Why could she not bear to hear his name, to be reminded of him by tv, music, books, etc., yet she was willing to hear his voice?

Would her lullaby have been something that she would have wanted to hear?

I didn't think so hard about it till this reread, and this is my 6th time, and I get what you're saying, she shuns everything that reminds her of him. Till she hears his voice and she won't even think his name till Laurent and the meadow. Now the last few chapters she, with pain, thinks his name and is forced to say his name and the Cullens, so at this moment when what she wants is to comfort herself with something Edward, if she had the option maybe she would have. The taking of the stuff never bothered me before, cause like you said she shuns everything, but she's cheating now so why not use the one thing that never fails to help her sleep.

I don't know maybe I'm overthinking it, or putting myself there too much. Heck maybe if she had all that stuff throughout this dark period she might not have chased the adrenaline and danger just to connect with him.

Yes!! This quote is from right after she hears his voice for the first time, after leaving the theater with Jessica:

"It was HIS voice- I was exceptionally careful not to think his name - and I was surprised that the sound of it did not knock me to my knees, did not curl me onto the pavement in a torture of loss. But there was no pain, none at all." (pg 111)

Just beyond that she explains she knows the pain that will come later, but also the relief she felt - b/c she was afraid she may have been forgetting him. It hurt to bad to think of him, but she never wanted to forget him. Hearing the hallucinations let her see that she still remembered the sound of his voice, although she tried not to think of it. Definitely time to re-read that section. It explains so much!

Yeah, I think I should reread it. But I still find it to be sort of confusing, that she wanted to remember him by hearing his voice but that it hurt to hear his name/think of the Cullens. I think I am just over-thinking it though...

She was addicted to hearing his voice and it also made her feel like he still wanted her when he was "yelling" at her in her hallucination,s and that didn't hurt so much as thinking of how he left her and how none of the Cullens were ever coming back. I feel like if I had a break up like her and felt like she did I'd want to still be able to hear his voice and feel like I was still cared about.

I hope I didn't make it sound like I was bashing the story. I get why Bella stayed away from things that reminded her of Edward, I just think it is interesting to think about the fact that she also went out of her way to do things to hear his voice. I get the distinction between the two, I just think it is an interesting concept to think about.

And when Bella thinks of Esme and how she had to hold her breath when Bella got cut and she starts crying. It's so sad.

I was never mad at Edward for leaving because he truely believes he HAS to do this. Have you read midnight sun? I feel like I understand why he left after I read that. He took away all her things so she wouldn't have to think about him and hopefully she would move on and be with someone who can grow old with her.

I feel so sad during this whole chapter because it's like she is being broken up with for the second time and everytime she lets someone in they leave her. Poor Bella.

I did read Midnight Sun. It was amazing, and I wish SM would finish it.
I completely understand Edward. One thing I wrote about in my rant (somewhere on this page, I think) is that Bella considered Edward to be perfect. She thought he embodied perfection. Well, I sort of see the fact that Edward broke up with her in the way he did as one example that shows his imperfections. In my opinion, I felt like Edward was sort of taking choices away from Bella, the choice to remember him and his family. I mean, he not only lied to her about how he felt about her, but he also took his whole family away from Forks, so Bella was without the Cullens. Then, he took everything that he had given her, so she had nothing of his. He said he "It would be as if I never existed". I know he had no idea what Bella would go through, and the fact that she went through what she did proves that it didn't matter what he took away, they would always be a part of each other's lives. Edward had good intentions, I really love his character, and I know he was doing what he thought was best for Bella. I just think that Bella considered him to be perfect, and I don't think he was - his imperfections are more reason to love him, in my opinion.

That part was so hard to read, too. When Jacob is a total jerk to her and she has to go through pain like that again. Not pain like Edward leaving, but still, horrible. How hard would that be, to open up to someone and to have one person in the world you thought was always going to be there after your love left you, and then to have them act like that? I can't even imagine.

I know! I wish she would get the book done. I've read midnight sun 10 times already. Edward had to take her choices away from her because he knew she wouldn't let him leave if they tried talking about it without him being decided. I feel like he took all her things away to try and make it as easy as possible as it could be for her to get over him and his family. That's why I defend him when people are all like I'm so mad at Edward for leaving and he's an a$$. He would never ever hurt Bella and the only reason he hurt her by leaving was because he thought by him and his family being in her live any longer it would hurt her even more in the long run when she wanted a baby and grow old together and Edward couldn't give her that. I mean they clearly didn't know that vampires and humans could have babies lol.

I agree with everything your saying. I love Edward and how he isn't cocky about things and how he thinks he's a monster ( not that he is) but it makes him seem more down to earth. I love how he doesn't see himself the ways other do because I think that makes him more likeable.

Exactly! I mean I've gone through my share of breakups and friends screwing me over, but to have the only two people you've ever actually related to on the same level basically tell you they don't want you and your not good for them over and over again. I'm suprised she didn't jump off the cliff sooner than she did.

I LOVED midnight sun, and I'm not mad at Edward for leaving, in general. It is so his nature that it was inevitable that he would try to leave her to save her. This is also why it doesn't bother me when Bella forgives him so easily at the end. But I guess my own emotions over this pain Bella feela in the middle of the book comes to a limit and I start to think that he could have at least left her with something to cherish and remember him with.

Bella thinking of Esme and Carlilse, just tears me up at the end of this chapter. She's been broken up with twice, and now she has to compare the wolves to the Cullens, and its just too much.

The first time I read the book I felt that way too like about him leaving her with something, but he thought it was the best way for her to get over him without reminders of pain.

It's just so sad because as motherly Esme is, she had to run away too. I think it makes it even sader because she has to compare the Cullens with the pack ( mostly I mean Jacob) Both the Cullens who were her new family, the family she would literally die for and Jacob who was family in a way both left her alone and broken.

Yeah, that made me cry, too. To know that she's willing to cheat, given that she's already hurting? That sucks...

I actually think this chapter has quite a lot of emotional content.

For me, this chapter quite painful to read. Bella had finally found someone who was helping mask her wounds but it all starts to unravel again, you can really feel her desperation.

Bella has the constant fear over whether Victoria is coming for her or Charlie; Jacob's continued disappearance and Billy's bullsh*t answers to deal with. You sense the panic reaching dangerous heights once more.

I wanted to hug Quil, he looked so lost. I wanted to punch Sam Uley in the face for all of his calm facades and silent power.

This is also the first time we really sense Jacob's hatred for the Cullen's. He speaks about them with so much anger present in his voice. He believed it all to be susperstitious nonsense before, but now he is openly speaking of Vampires with Bella, leaving her even more confused and scared.

I don't necessarily mind the Edward hallucinations. He was constantly trying to keep her safe; so it is most likely an involutary action now to avoid danger. Whether she understands it or not, it's just ingrained within her.

Okay, so this is more of the same...sad sad hole-in-the-belly Bella. I have to admit..I mostly skimmed this chapter. Stephenie writes beautifully and I love her to death, but there's only so much Debbie Downer a girl can take!

I'm taking the 20th off...I know I'll be useless at work after the midnight show. Then I'm definitely seeing it again on Friday with my co-workers. Most likely I'll see a matinee on Saturday...I might do that one by myself! LOL!
I honestly can't remember being so manic about a movie coming out in my life!

I actually screamed OUT LOUD when the trailer was on tv last night! My husband just looked down at the newspaper and quietly shook his head. My daughter said, "Geez mom, you don't have to yell!"

I think it would be best if I just moved out for the next 2 weeks. LMAO

I'm 25, married, 2 young kids, and I've never been so obsessed over anything not even in my tweens.

Then Friday i gotta clean and prep house for daughter's 2nd b-day party on Sat. Gonna be a long weekend!

Oh I know! I was at the computer and the TV was on and I heard "This is the last time you'll ever see me" and I dashed over to the TV and stood in front of it like a little kid - I was in a trance swaying back and forth. My husband just looked at me...didn't say anything. Then I remembered I have DVR so I rewound it and watched it AGAIN! LOL!

This is the insult to injury chapter. Poor Bella! I feel terrible for her at this time. She's lost Edward and things were beginning to look up, and then all of this begins to happen. She is totally in the dark.

"Don't worry - it gets better and everything is going to be ok" is what I have to tell myself while I'm reading this part of the book.

I skipped most of the Jacob part this time around...I've never done it before but it wasn't holding my interest at all!

Irritated with this chapter. Some things about it do not make sense at all.
- I agree that the whole hallucination with Edward was a little confusing. Was it her subconcious that had her knowing all along? (Jacob has already told her of werewolves in Twilight) but how would she really know not to make them angry. (Did anyone else think there may have been a mental connection with them even with the mental sheild? That part got me confused.)
- Billy is still a jackass.
- Everyone knows her history and her ability to keep a secret. Why would they keep it from her, cause all this pain. All Jake had to do was explain properly...
- The whole Laurant/Victoria thing is major issue with me. Some tracking down would have been in order. I'm just saying. "Hey, Alice. Um, some vampires are trying to kill me again. Can I get some assistance, please..."

I think the hallucination was SM's attempt at letting us know that Edward really did want Bella to be safe and stay alive. Remember she was trying to figure out why she was hearing them in the first place and decided it was her subconscious that he really didnt care whether she lived or died... just a guess though, I have no idea. But Bella's subconscious is very, very perceptive and knows things even when Bella doesn't realize it.

I totally agree with you on all points about the Edward voices, etc. Bella is indeed very perceptive, and has a very strong mind, i.e. none of the Volturi's can mess with her mind, and let us not forget what she is capable of in BD.

you re right. I just finished new moon and when i read this i had to re read it several times. the hallucinations were bella's subconcious mind telling her that Edward did love her. Pg 527

"I thought of that night in port angeles when I'd had my first delusion. I'd come up with two options. Insanity or wish fulfillment. I"D SEEN NO THIRD OPTION"

But what If.....

"What if you sincerely believed something was true"(She believed Edward did not want/love her). "What if you were so stubbornly sure that you were right , that you would not even consider the truth?" (The truth is that Edward does love her) "Would the truth be silenced, OR WOULD IT TRY TO BREAK THROUGH." (Hallucinations)

Whereas before, Bella did not see a 3rd option, as to why she was hearing Edward's voice, Now she realizes that there was a third option all along. But she was too stubborn to even consider it.

"Option three: Edward loved me..........."

"Was that what I'd been trying to tell myself" OH!"

Bella was talking to Edward about hearing his voice:
"....I wonder if the reason i could hear you so clearly was because, underneath it all, I always know that you had not stopped loving me.

Even though I do not agree with you. I do understand where you are coming from. There are some things I question in new Moon as well as Eclipse. However I read it for what it is a fantasy novel. I do not get stuck on the things i don t understand otherwise I won t enjoy it. so why bother reading it. I keep in mind it's Fantasy and just flow with it.

If you 'got it' all of what you said was explained in the book. Maybe you should re-read. Bella clearly states she is not suicidal. Her hallucinations of Edward wouldn't say 'I love you Bella' b/c that would defeat the purpose! He left her to keep her safe - Bella's subconscious knew that - hence her hallucinations came about when she was being reckless - she really knew he wanted her to be safe.

the thing i dont get about new moon is that why doesnt alice see victoria and laurent chasing after bella. but alice sees when bella jumps off the cliff.
i mean when victoria and laurent were after her, bella had nothing to do with the wolves. but when she jumped off the cliff she was with the wolves [not atm but still] so that would make it a whole lot harder for alice to see.

Since Edward had told Alice not to search for Alice's future, my theory is that she only would have seen extreme things like Bella's life being threatened or ending. And since the wolves had control of Vic and Laurent then she was never really in total danger from them yet.

I think the reason for Alice not seeing Laurent and Victoria's plans is because she wasn't tuned into them. Like near the end, when Alice comes back, and says she wasn't watching Bella, but the images just came to her because she was so tuned into Bella already. I think that's it. She hadn't been around Laurent and Victoria for as long as Bella, she wasn't used to always watching their future like she had done with Bella before the Cullens left.

You're make perfect sense to me! I feel the same way there better be some very convincing emotion coming from Rob and Kristen, I don't want to be sitting there thinking that emotion should have been better, or the reason that scene in the book is so much better is because you can really know whats going on inside the character.

ok ive read them like 8 times each... bella always knew the quiletes were wolves (shape shifters for the picky people) remember that very first dream on the beach? she sees edward and then a random wolf. so it was her subconcious knowledge that enabled her to think that edward was saying "let him calm down" etc....obviously it was just her wishing in some way he still cared about her.

kind of funny though... i know people always say if you have a dilemna sleep on it and in the morning you will know... but bella seems to literally dream every single answer and answers to questions she dosnt even know she will ever need.... the girl is a freak but a good one lol

I was desperate, reaching, stretching the truth so far that it curved nearly into the shape of a lie. "Maybe...maybe if you gave me some time...just don't quit on me now, Jake. I can't take it."

*Had to put the book down after that part. Sad*

I feel soooo sorry for Bella here, she loves Jacob so much that she is willing to give him an opportunity. I don't think she said that just because she was using him and didn't want him to leave, I think she really meant it because she really loves him. We can see this love clearly in Eclipse, when she admits she IS in love with Jacob too, she isn't a hypocrite, i think that what she says is honest.

I agree with that. Part of the reason I find New Moon and Eclipse to be so complicated is because Bella can't recognize her feelings for Jacob. It is a strange concept to think about, the whole Jacob/Edward thing.

**I will just warn you guys - this is going to be a rant, which means I am sorting out my own thoughts, which means it probably won't make much sense.

For Bella, Edward leaving literally meant part of her died. It is something that I cannot personally relate to, because not only have I never found my soulmate, but I haven't ever dated anyone. For Bella, it was like her soul was being ripped out. She even said it to Edward, when she was begging him to stay. She told him to take her soul, that she didn't want it without him. But he left anyways. Not only did he leave, but he left while convincing her that he didn't want her in his life and that she wasn't good enough for him. As readers, we could tell Edward was lying, at least I could. But Bella never felt good enough for him, she seemed to put Edward up on this pedestal that he could never reach. She considered him to be perfect, and the fact that he dealt with the Jasper situation in the way that he did clearly showed his imperfections. (I love Edward, I know he had good intentions, I am just saying that I don't think he is perfect - that I think Bella had unrealistic feelings about him in that sense, because she was so in love with him).

So....months go by. Bella doesn't feel like living, she lives in the barest sense of the word. As readers, we come back into her world, but it doesn't feel the same, it feels empty. It doesn't feel like she is living. With Jacob, she finally finds some happiness. But because Edward was such a huge part of her, and because she can't let go of him, I feel like her subconscious always compared Jacob to Edward. I know you guys might disagree with that statement. To be honest, I don't even really know what I am trying to say. I just feel like Bella wanted Edward back to the point where it was painful. It was painful to read about what she went through, to realize that she had the option of either participating in these reckless situations to at least have part of Edward with her, or to really try and let go of him. There was no way there could be an in between for Bella, I don't think she could have kept Edward with her but commit to someone else at the same time.

Because she was so focused on the loss of Edward during New Moon, because that part of her life was so filled with the pain of him being gone, she never did realize her feelings for Jacob. When she finally seriously considered committing to him, after he saved her from almost drowning, to me, it didn't feel like she recognized that she was in love with him. It just felt like she was settling. That isn't to say she didn't consider Jacob to be extremely important to her, just that she didn't recognize her true feelings.

Anyways, whether or not Bella ever really saw Jacob as a feasible option for her, whether she saw him as someone she could be with when Edward was there and available, I think that is up to debate. By available, I don't mean single, I just mean...Edward came back. In Eclipse, Bella had both those options. But as a reader, I never felt like anyone could ever come close to being what Edward was, that Jacob never really was an option for Bella - not because he wouldn't have been a good one, but because the absence of Edward taught her that Edward WAS hers, and that she was his. How could Bella ever have seriously considered being with Jacob when being without Edward was that painful?

OH MY GOD I am so sorry you guys - you just had to witness my rant. SO SORRY!!

She was desperate and desperation makes the most sane person act off their rocker. Still not a Bella fan but can understand her fear.

Ok, I finally see the quote I was going to put in. That needs to be word for word (along with gasping for breath between words) in the movie - of course I will need a whole box of tissues for that scene! Poor Bella! Always the insecure one, always blaming herself!

I think i'm the only one who will ever blame Bella for the reason why the Cullens left. Couldn't she just not open the god damn present in such a hurry. Like she was THAT bothered. She didn't even want a party or presents in the first place.

I would have rather see her, like any other normal human being, undress Edward quicker then she tried with that Present.

Still. The end of this chapter broke my heart. Bellas new dream.

I think that Bella knew what Jacob was already, I don't think she realized it but subconsiously I think she knew what he was. If you remember in Twilight she had a dream about Jacob turning into a wolf to protect her from Edward. Maybe somewhere deep down she might have known.

I noticed that too, about calming Jacob down. That doesn't make sense. The first time I read it, I thought (hoped) that it was really Edward she was hearing and that she really was connected to him on that level. That would have been really cool, I think. So Steph, how DID Bella know to calm Jake down?

Reading it for the 3rd time, I really love this chapter. Bella is so messed up she can't think clearly which is why she doesn't understand anything. She knows, she knows everything... she just hasn't admitted any of it to herself. The Edward voice in her head is a little weird but it shows how REALLY messed up she is. I think the reason she heard Edward when Jacob is so angry and about to change it the she knows he is dangerous. Jacob it too cute, and again I didn't really get into his character until BD but here he is so sweet and innocent and now in this chap. it's all gone. He knows he didn't imprint on Bella, he knows the stories of V. are true. He knows he must follow Sam. (Well, we know differently, again BD) He can't think w/o the others in his head and Sam has bound him NOT to say anything. I love her dream at the end, to me it is in her dreams that she sorts everything out and realizes she is in love with Jacob and Edward. Also, they both broke her heart, etc. Then, the whole Vickie thing. Why didn't anyone (Bella, Cullens, etc) think that Victoria was gone for good? Why wouldn't she try to get to Bella? She'd find out eventually the Cullens were gone leaving her the opp. to get her revenge. Why didn't Carlise think of this before they left? Love Laurent, love the irony of Bella happy that Jacob was safe and not in the woods w/ her when he was there the whole time... as a wolf! love it. So, if Bella loves Jacob but she loves Edward more and always will... first love thing if Edward never came back and the whole book was changed Blah blah blah... She probably would've ended up with Jacob, and he wouldn't have become a wolf. Which is why I think is the reason he imprints on Nessie. He has always known he couldn't have Bella, which is why he doesn't imprint on her but his love for Bella transfers to Nessie. Etc.

I wondered about the Victoria situation, also. Thought it was rather odd and against the character of the whole Cullen clan to leave Bella unprotected. Though I like Jacob much better than Edward, I never wanted Bella with him. He is to good for her, IMO! I think Edward & Bella both are very narcissistic, one again MHO.

I get so sad for quil and its one of those things where i just wanna hug the guy! =/ He has to put up with loosing all his friends and being scared to death that he's next. Total bummer!
AAAND you start to realize that jake is being a super douche, yes, but he's hurting too. He wants to tell bella and he wants her to be ok. He flat out says "i hate hurting you" but he does it anyways.
And then billy loses his cool dad brownie points when he goes at it with charlie.

I don't think Billy or Jacob were jerks. They were doing what they had to do under the circumstances.

Bella, on the other hand, proved she was using Jacob when she dangled the possibility of a romantic relationship to keep him from leaving her.

Was pulling my hair out at that part, cause I knew Edward would come back, HE HAD TO! But for her to do that was like torture cause she never could give him what he should have or deserves, and yet even as she thinks it to herself, she says it to him anyway!

Although I love Chris Weitz and what he has done (from what we have seen) of New Moon... and I would pick him ANY DAY over Hardwicke..... I HATE!!!! how they dress Edward and do his make up in New Moon.

He is all in suits and weird stuff and this is NOT the edward cullen we fell in love with. yes, alice dresses him in designer clothes but what happened to the good old grey coat we saw him in in Twilight. and the look of him when he first walked into the cafeteria in Twilight. He is not as appealing and perfect in New Moon.

Cmon Christ Weitz.. make him the god that Bella describes him as in the book !!!!!

I'm sure Stephenie does write the series for herself. Twilight is obviously a fantasy redo of her high school years, combined with the fantasy of eternal youth, but when she decided to publish, the possibility of criticism came with the millions, particularly since the series is marketed as YA.

Bella does claim she's not suicidal, and that claim is disproven by her actions. If she wasn't suicidal, she wouldn't have been happy at the thought of drowning. If Meyer wanted to prove she wasn't suicidal, that was the time for Bella to fight at the thought of losing her life, instead of gratefully submitting to death.

It's one thing to have an unreliable narrator, it's another for the readers to believe her, it's quite another for the author to do so. Bella's desperation for her Edward hallucinations caused her to behave in a way that endangered her life, so to claim that was a subconscious recognition of Edward's love is ridiculous.

Meyer simply didn't want to admit that Bella was right when she said it was a sign of insanity or wish-fulfilment, or that what Bella was subconsciously seeking was suicide, or how pathetically desperate Bella is when it comes to Edward.

Either Meyer realized what a horrendous female Bella is for a YA audience, and wouldn't admit it to increase sales, or she's so deep in her own fantasies that she's as self-deluded as her avatar.

I don't hate everything about the series. I like Jacob, and I enjoy discussing the series because it's so very warped.

OK, well I still don't agree with you but it's nice to understand where you are coming from now, and I won't argue b/c I don't think we could ever be on the same page - we can just agree to disagree! I was honestly confused with your bitter remarks towards Meyer and Bella, but I have run across some really unique opinions on this site and it's helps to understand the reasons behind them.
