We are on chapter 7 of our countdown that means 18 more days until the release of New Moon.  Join us by reading a chapter a day together.  So in order to help pass the time while we wait for New Moon to be released, I will continue to post a thread everyday for each chapter in the book, counting down the days until the official release of the film on November 20th.

Chapter 7: Repetition

Two words: Cullen. Manor. I was super excited when Bella took her “field trip” as she called it out to the Cullen home, or the manor as I like to call huge exquisite homes. Besides that, this chapter really wasn’t action packed yet again, but it does give us some key knowledge, & introduces us to some of the characters that have a huge impact later on down the line.

  • When Bella visits the Cullen Manor, the emptiness I felt when she describes the home; the overgrown trees, unkempt land & the overall scene leaves the once warm feeling home, looking creepy…”a fitting haunt for vampires”as she stated.   ”I stopped when I got to the porch stairs, because there was nothing here. No lingering sense of their presence…of his presence.  The house was solidly here, but it meant little.”  “I didn’t go any closer.  I didn’t want to look in the windows.  I wasn’t sure which would be harder to see.  If the rooms were bare, echoing empty from floor to ceiling, that would certainly hurt.  But wouldn’t it be worse if there were no change?  If the couches sat just as I’d last seen them, the paintings on the walls-worse still, the piano on its low platform?  It would be second only to the house disappearing all together, to see that there was no physical possession that tied them in anyway.  That everything remained, untouched and forgotten behind them.  Just like me.”  *sigh* :(
  • On a brighter note, I absolutely love how Angela & Ben welcome Bella back with very forgiving open arms after she’d been a zombie for 4 months, and Mike even gets the courage to ask Bella out on a date! (Can’t wait for the movie theater scene)
  • I love Jacob & Bella’s “adding years on their ages” jokes.  It’s a riot when Jacob says: “Cool I’m middle aged now.”
  • In this chapter we are introduced to the cliff-diving scene, that later turns out, well…you all know what goes down. Lol
  • Jake’s humor basically saves the entire saga in my opinion(me being the class clown that I am) Jacob’s humor never ceases to amaze me, especially when he refers to the LaPush gang as “hall monitors gone bad” ROFL!
  • Finally, we are formally introduced to Ephraim Black & the story of Sam Uley & “The Protectors.”

I think that just about covers this chapter. Did I leave anything out? What are your feelings on chapter 7?

  • This chapter to me represents the calm before the storm. Things are still quiet but are ready to explode at any minute. You can just feel the atmosphere shifting slightly and you realize something is soon coming. Soon after this chapter Bella's involvement in the mythical world is much, much deeper than it once was. The tension between Jake and the La Push Gang is revealed showing Jake's vulnerable side. I love him here. Jake is genuinely scared that he might be next and worries for his friends too.

    You can also really sense Bella's urgency to be stupid (in her own words of course, not mine lol). She so longs not only to hear Edward's voice, but to be assured that he really exists. And in an attempt to hear him again, this is when she drives to the Cullen house.
    Pg. 162 I wasn't sure which would be harder to see. If the rooms were bare, echoing empty from floor to ceiling, that would certainly hurt... But wouldn't it be worse if there were no change?     Holy HALE! I almost copied in a fax to my financial processing people... LOL
    Great synopsis, I agree wholeheartedly. Jake was my big focus here, as well. I love that Bella has some happiness with him, that he helps draw her out. And because we see what he does for her, and love him for that, seeing his fear and uncertainty in regards to Sam Uley and the “gang” just makes it that much more ominous. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have a sense of being watched... being “groomed” for something you don't even understand or want…an impending doom, if you will.

    Yet, Jake is still there for Bella, and he takes her comfort – the hug between the two is just wonderful. And Bella’s realization that she’s never been so close – to a human, anyway – is quite the realization.

    I like that SM allows life to go on, but Bella is always aware of what is missing, and we are kept well aware that she is not “over” Edward by any stretch of the imagination.

    SM is really good at making you relate to the text by making you think of your own losses weather a lover or a friend or even a family member. I can relate by thinking of my first love and losing them and how you know your not over someone, but they seem sooo over you. She is amazing when It comes to that.

  • I also love the paragraph where Bella realizes that she's never been this close to a human before. She probably even thought she wasn't capable of that kind of relationship with a living person lol.

I was meaning it would be funny for me to read a chapter and send it to you... trust me, my hubby has Tourette's, Asperger's Syndrome (high functioning autism) AND ADHD... and my 7yo has ADHD along with other things, and is in grade 2 and FINALLY read her first sentence... I really wasn't making fun of you, I promise!

    That's ok, I didn't take it that bad! LOL. I just haven't been made fun of for my poor reading skills since the 6th grade. When I started the 6th grade I had a 3rd grade reading level. I had a great teacher that found out that if I sang out my vocabulary words and studied to music, I would absorb what I was trying to learn. I know I'm a slow reader compared to some but LWNV is a freakishly FAST reader! She went through EP in two sittings and it took me over a week and a half!

    Hubby has Asperger's Syndrome? I know someone who's child has that. Excuse me but I've found a new level of respect for you.

    OK, I'm totally not with it... EP? Oh yeah, just figured it out! dur...
    That is so cool that music worked so well for you, awesome! I'm right up there with LWNV... was reading at a grade 9 level in grade 3... bored out of my tree in the classroom, still read freakishly fast... my 11yo is the same way... we can't keep her nose out of the books. The 7yo wants to be able to read so badly, but has problems with retrieval in her brain... she sees the letters, learns the letters, and is fine... until she goes to retrieve them again... there's concern that she shows autistic tendencies as well, and the darling has absolutely no concept of boundaries... makes for a lot of fun...
    Don't think too highly of me, I'm not perfect by ANY stretch of the imagination... nor patient... just ask hubby!

    SPELL CHECK!!!! LOL It's funny how I can spell words you learn in high school but have major issues with words that you would learn in elementary school!

    I know I told you that I started the 6th grade at a 3rd grade reading level but I graduated that year with an 8th grade reading level.

    Have you talked to the doctors about music therapy? It really works. I went to high school with someone who was autistic and he was extremely fluent in music. He saw notes in colors. They also used music to teach him his other studies as well. It's something to think about.

    Hubby is amazing in physics, astronomy & computers... the man aced his Physics final with a 90% after missing half the classes due to our daughter being born with several complications... he read Stephen Hawking for the fun of it... makes me sick... ;D

    It's amazing how the brain works. How in some areas the brain can be scattered all over the place. Unable to make simple connections but because the brain is wired differently, the brain can make connections that normal people can't make. For example it was hypothesized that Einstein was a high functioning autistic individual and look at all that he had done. The equations he created are on a level that most could not fathom all because his brain didn't work the same as the norm.

    I still struggle with ADD but I try to overcome it. It's something I must be conscientious of always. I can get distracted easily and I'll get behind in my work. I try to do five things at once when I shouldn't do more than two. I have to stop, take deep breath and prioritize my tasks. I have faith your youngest will be able to overcome and succeed.

    *MWAH* thanks, bb - it's nice to hear that from someone else. A lot of people assume we're just lazy parents who don't discipline properly... it can be frustrating and exceedingly down-heartening to face on an ongoing basis, your thoughts really do mean a lot. :)

    Well, life gets in the way. Not to mention tweeting and reading all the posts on NMM or EM. Also the reports I must complete for work and all of the lovely research that needs to be done when creating a presentation to a prospect.

    And now I'm having to post my resume again since it looks like there will be another round of layoffs coming. So the book has to take a back seat for now.

    Plus I like to take my time when reading the book as I like to get lost in the story.

    Great commentary, you nailed a lot of the same things that got to me... I feel the same way about Jake, he really lightens things up when they need to be at this point. It's one of the things I miss once he has his first transormation - he's not so light-hearted after that, and I miss it.

    I always thought she was saying that for Charlie's benefit rather than it being true. I think she knew, but wanted more info than she could see. She had to know what it would do to Bella to have them all leave without a word. And why wouldn't Edward ask what would happen? Wouldn't she see then? And wouldn't they all know that she'd go crazy? i know I'm over thinking, but damn. This whole situation was avoidable in every logical sense. Probably why I can't get into Romeo and Juliet. Do people not think stuff out before they do it anymore?

    Good points. I think that Edward was so convinced that he was doing the right thing that he wouldn't ask; no matter if he was wrong. He wouldn't consider any other alternative. Sounds like someone in my family right now who I want to slap...

    Actually I read somewhere Hint: the script about this question. Alice actually argues with the family about leaving bella behind and she says how bella won't do so well without them and the father says that Edward asked us not to interfere with her life and we must do as he says. Don't know if it will be in the movie or not but from what I read it was in there and that's how it went down. They were at Tanyas house talking about it but who knows it's just a draft right.

    I think Alice couldnt see what was happening with Bella because she was with Jacob and Alice cannot see with the wolves around. Even when Sam found Bella in the woods, Alice would not have seen that happening to know how bad it was in the beginning. Plus, Edward asked her not to watch her, so maybe Alice really tried to respect that, but in the end she could not help it!!

    On that note, Edward can't read her mind, and Alice can see what she is going to do not what she is thinking. So she really wouldnt know what she was feeling. Thats they way I see it.

    Knowing Edward he probably asked Alice to try to not see Bella's future, because he wanted her to have a clean break and he said that Bella could go on with her life without any more interference from him... Don't know if it actually happened that way, but it does sound like something he would do :)...
  • Dude I hated that part in the book where Bella remembers back to Phoenix and how the doc told her it was a clean break and her realization of the significance of that. Ugghhh Man I felt like crawling into bed in the fetal position and crying right there LOL
  • Remember that Bella was spending a lot of time in La Push.... and before that Edward had told Alice not to watch for Bella... but yeah I would think that she would at least sneak and see if she was ok..

    Alice couldn't see her beacuse she was with Jacob... a blind spot. Besides Edward told her not to"look" so I'm sure she would only see major danger (like cliff diving, perhaps...)

    Oh I know, but he was in La Push, around all the werewolves, like Sam. Besides his tranformation had already begun. He was already extremely big, very strong, and tall whe Bella took the bikes to him the first time. Just because he hadn't phased yet, doesn't mean he wasn't transitioning from human to shape-shifter. I think that he was a blindspot from the beginning of NM, because his growth-spurt indicates that the transition had begun.
  • It is in his genetic makeup though. I'm no science whiz but I'm pretty sure that even though he hasn't transformed yet, he still has those mutated chromosomes... and that was the link between Jake and Nessie (chromosome count) as to why Alice couldn't see either of them.. just a theory

    Like some others have touched on, here's some direct quotes from the book...

    "I told him this would happen, but he didn't believe me. 'Bella promised,' ... 'Don't be looking for her future, either, .... 'We've done enough damage.' "

    Alice was doing as Edward wished.
    She then goes on to say...

    "But just because I'm not looking, doesn't mean I don't see ... I wasn't keeping tabs on you, I swear, Bella."

    What I took from this was that Alice only saw the vision of Bella because it was a life threatening (which bella was unaware of at the time), prominent decision she made, that wasn't clouded by members of the pack. My guess is that the vision of Bella jumping off of that cliff probably just abruptly came to Alice.

    Ok sad chapter but the whole book is sad NEW MOON COMES OUT IN 17 DAYS HERE!!!! any part of the book that has Jake rocks and I don't understand is why go back to the cullens house it will only cause her more pain and suffering but sorry after a while Bella get over him and move on Jake is sooo much more better for you then Edwad
  • I think the reason it is so sad (for me anyway) is that you feel so much of what Bella feels. You're living vicariously through her and just the thought of being unwanted hurts. Thinking that someone you loved really did not care at all. Even though this extra pain is self-inflicted, it still hurts.

    you know what, I think it was nice to show contemporary Native Americans and include their culture so deeply into this story. pretty awesome. ethnic people dont usualy get the chance to have their culture threaded into something this popular............I hope this story gives people insight into what young natives/other ethnic people are like on the inside and help them have a better understanding/respect for Native people and their POV.
  • Yeah, it's pretty easy to see why SM decided to include Native characters. Native Americans have some of the most interesting lore and beliefs of just about any group of people. I personally don't know a lot about Native American culture but have always found the stories I have heard to be fascinating.

    So sad that the house was completely void of any feeling that the Cullens had been there.
    How sad and how terrifying for Bella. It had to make her question her own sanity.
    Had they ever really been there at all? Poor Bella...

    Jake is so wonderful and so funny that he saves her. She can't help but feel his warmth and laugh at his jokes. When she sees that he is truly scared of the "gang", it brings out the "motherly" protective feelings in her. So sweet...
    They have such a wonderful relationship already in this chapter! Just love it.

    BUT, it is so well written and I do love New Moon.

    lol it's okay. I have only read NM twice, and that's only because Stephenie Meyer said we should. She was so right. Reading it twice made me like Jacob, and I was much calmer knowing Edward was coming back.

    However, I haven't picked it up since. I'll read all the other books, but this one just tears my heart out. I just catch up by reading everyone's comments lol

    My friends all don't understand why i am Team Edward, when Jake is very up my street. I'm too sarcastic for my own liking and been decribed as "funny" LOL.

    But this is what made me want to skip this bit of New Moon, i felt i might be Team Jaocb. But i didn;t i read it and i felt hatred for him. But this chapter he was ok. Man i OKed myself and hated myself through a book. LOL.

    But what made me like New Moon is knowing how Bella felt. most books, skip that, lock the girls emotions away. But i like the fact that we got to understand that Bella felt left behind, that she STILL knew she belonged to Edward. That he could come back at any time and she would still love him.

    The house discription got me. Theres nothing there, just like there is nothing inside her, nothing without Edward or the Cullens. Just like the house, abandoned and left behind, empty, lonely and vunerable. Bella is a house. LOL.

    Still, Chapter 7 was a good Chapter. Then for me i scowl the rest of the book until we get to the Volturi part. LOL. Bring it on.

    I knew then that this spelled bad news for Bella. Love that they introduced the idea of the dive so early in the book, and everything after it leads up to it.

    anyway thanks for doing the the Re-read a little later this time....gives me a chance to come home and do everything i need to do...and now i can focus on Ch.7:)

    Well.. the narrator is a lonely in her sixties woman and that just makes you feel depressed all the time..
    I don't really like it, also because the main character (an in her forties school teacher who hooks up with a sixteen year old student) is way too naif..
    so the plot becomes kind of annoying at a certain point..

    Ok first of all, I want to say I loved this chapter, it seems kind of like the start of spring after an extremely long winter- warmth has returned but you know its going to get hotter. Now I want to say that this read through has been the first ever time I have actually really warmed to Jacob.
    The first time I read the books I actually hated Jacob, the fact that he was pulling Bella away from the Cullens made me hate him and I still hated it when he was always around Renesmee, I felt like he was trying to be the one who raises her and he didn't even let Edward near her. But this time it has been completely different!!! I can now see why all the Jacob fans love him, he picks up the broken pieces of Bella that Edward left behind and brings her out of the shell she has wrapped herself up in.
    It's strange how every time I read these books I find myself rooting for someone new. Does this happen to other people too or is it just me?

    LOL I don't know that I find myself rooting for someone new as much as I'm able to re-evaluate the developing dynamic between Bella & Jacob's relationship. It's nice to go over things again & catch stuff you didn't notice before!

    LOL This post pretty much captures everything I love about Ch. 7. Although I'm sure there are plenty of middle-aged people out there who would jump at the chance to remind Jacob that youth is wasted on the young haha.

    Well..her name is stephanie ritz not one of Rob´s sisters, and i´ve seen tons of pictures of her with Rob...so she´s not only an agent but a lucky woman indeed..."staring at her in disbelief", not just lucky... but as i havent had my second class of staring anonymous i can´t find the right word...help

    God bella annoys me when she pulls that stunt and decides to go to the cullens house. She was getting better, becoming less zombie, and then she practically threw her progress into reverse and stomped on the gas. NOT SMART.

    On a happy note, I LOVE JACOB SO MUUUCH! The jokes between jake and bella make me giggle.

    AAAND then theres the little bit of mystery with the la push gang and you first start to realize that there is something bigger going on in la push.

    I don't like how Bella went to look for her pain again after she started feeling better.... however... I am glad that she did because that way she knows that Edward was out there somewhere...... and as I am re-reading New moon again... i am beginning to like Jacob's character a little (minutely so) bit more..... he is the one who is helping Bella out... and she really loves him, even though her heart will always be Edward's..... and as I have said many times.... Taylor's performance in NM will be the reason I switch from Team Edward to team Switzerland! --- any ways enough off topic.... I love how Jake describes Sam's gang as hall monitors... and as I read this chapter again, I realized that I have a slight dislike to that "gang" as well.... and I can't say why... hopefully they will show the "gang" cliff diving otherwise it won't be as significant when Bella does it... I mean it will, but perhaps not as much as it could have....

    and there are several quotes that I want to be in the movie from this chapter... but if I had to pick one... this would be it: "there was something to search for.Unattainable and impossible, uncaring and disracted....but he was out there, somewhere. I had to believe that."
    18 more days to go!!! November 20th can't come fast enough!

    I think Bella went to look for her pain again, because i believe she started to doubt whether he ever existed at all, and if she had possibley started to lose her mind. She went to the house because it was the only proof she had. She had to convince herself again, no matter how much it hurt, that he was out there somewhere....
    I understand about the re-reading NM. Ive read the complete saga 12 times. with NM in particular, it takes a few reads to appreciate Jacob for what he is.

    And without gloating, i have tickets to see NM in 17 days. I had the opportunity to see it in 16 days, but alas, I have to work. Oh, the joys of living in Oz, being a day ahead of the rest of the world.......

    I liked that... I thought that sounded more like what Edward would have done... but oh well, editors made their decisions...

    Anyway, this was the time that I liked Jake... he was so innocent and happy... (except for the worries about his friends) and he was really trying to get Bella to like him more than a friend. My only issue with Jake is his persistence...that he knew Bella did not love him in "that" way but he "had to try..." over and over and over again... Well as someone who has been in a similar situation, it totally killed our friendship. I don't know how Bella was able to stay friends with him but I am glad that she did in the end... After Renesmee, they got back to that friendship and it was nice to see that again...☺ This is just my opinion guys, I know how much everyone loves Jake, no offense intended! ☺

    I agree that it is absolutely essential to read NM more than once. Like most, I rushed through the 1st read & flipped through until I saw Alice's name appear. Then I relaxed a little in the hope that Edward would reappear. But after my 2nd (&3rd read) I am able to appreciate how necessary Jacob was in that dark depression that Bella was in. Jacob was essential to Bella's well being at that time. I am enjoying seeing the relationship grow between Bella & Jacob now, probably because I know that Edward returns. And I found that I actually have a fondness towards Jacob now that wasn't there in the 1st read.

    I think Jacob flickers sunlight through NM, with his humour and warmth. NM would be devastatingly depressive if it werent for Jacob. How many of us had trouble reading the Edwardless chapters?? Feeling the emptiness of Bella's heartbreak..... it was crushing.
    Along came Jacob and brightened it up (marginally), so we have these snippets of Jacob and it gave us hope.
    Dont get me wrong, Im Edwardian the entire way, but i give credit where credit is due. Jacob is the sun, in the very darkest of night.......

  • This is like, the third time I've read New Moon all the way through, and like a lot of you guys are saying, I'm starting to warm up to Jacob too! I didn't like him very much at first, but since I know Edward WILL come back at the end, I can actually enjoy reading about Jacob and Bella's relationship grow. And it IS really sweet! But he kinda turns into a jerk after the wolf-change thing.
    And why in the world does Bella go to their house? What did she expect to happen? That was kinda stupid in my opinion...
  • Personally, for this Chapter. I would have to ask, was Bella looking for some kind of way as to reconnect with the Cullens in her own way or did she have intentions to drive out just to see the house. But the introduction to the La Push Gang (The Protectors) and the story about Sam Uley gave some of us readers an insight as to what we need to prepare for.
    The friendship that Bella has formed with Jacob is somewhat of a recovery for Bella. But for Jake, spending time with Bella proves that he can achieve more. The part 1 of the cliff diving scene gave Bella a fright as to how dangerous some of the boys are in the La Push, by jumping off of a high cliff.
