621twilightfxtoddAh, the super talented Todd Masters.  A man who obviously is ahead of his time in the world of character effects, I mean look at his work!  Masters FX is Todd’s 22-year-old Los Angeles-based company, but Todd isn’t exactly feeling the whole “vampires who sparkle” thing. 

“We’re not really into the whole sparkly vampire thing,” said Masters, a graduate of Sammamish High School who grew up in Lake Hills. “Vampires don’t sparkle.”

Among the company’s contributions to “New Moon” were wounds, scars, the tattoos worn by the wolf-morphing Quileute characters and one very graphic — and very sparkly — vampire death.

But alas — little to no blood.

“They don’t bleed,” said Masters. “They just sparkle.”

As you can probably guess, Masters is not a fan of Stephenie Meyer’s book series and doubts he’ll become one.

Ouch!  Not a fan?  Oh well, we can’t win them all folks.  But you simply can’t ignore the massive and undeniable talent that Mr. Masters has, I mean his  work is absolutely magnificent, maybe we will win him over…one day? :)

Masters, has also worked on several blockbuster smashes like, ”Nightmare on Elm Street and the very popular shows “Vampire Diaries” and “True Blood.”

So the whole “I love boys who sparkle” debate.  I think it’s cute and innocent, although the only one we’ve seen sparkle is my beloved Edward.  It would be nice to see them all bling out if even for a second.  As far as the blood and gore goes, I’m not into the whole bloody mess of it all.  I do enjoy True Blood as well as Vampire Diaries(that Stefan…woohoo!) but I like the lightness of  The Twilight Saga better, where the violence & blood is kept down to a minimum.  So how do you feel about the whole sparkle vs blood debate?  And also vampires are dead, are they even able to bleed? Hmmm..

    It's so weird to me when a person says, "vampires dont sparkle" as if vampires are real. HELLO!!! These are fantasy characters and they don't truly exist!!! People could write that vampires poop glitter if they wanted. It's not like vampires are based off actual artifacts like dinosaurs. CHILL OUT!!!

    Love the sparkles! And they were so incredibly done! Edward literally took my breath away in the first 10 seconds of the movie! So even if that guy doesn't like the sparkles he absolutely nailed it!

    I know right?! Besides since vampire's hearts are dead, then there is no blood being pumped through their veins, so they can't bleed! I love that Stephanie made her vampires sparkle in the sun as a reason to be out of the sun. It's different, romantic, not a bleeding scary mess that would ruin the whole romantic story!

    As for bleedig vampires, in other stuff I've read, it's the blood they've fed that causes them to "bleed" - there are just so many different backgrounds and "rules" for mythical creatures, it gets hard to keep them all straight... LOL

    I don't like the sparkling either.. sparles aren't scary! They don't really fit with their character IMO...

    However, I think the whole argument is stupid. I just got done having it with my boyfriend. He says I'm defending sparking, and I'm not. I'm simple defending the fact that vampires are FICTIONAL characters and no one has any clear facts to argue one way or the other.

    Then he tried to say "that's why they only come out at night?" hm that's funny because there are plenty of vampires, who don't sparkle, who can go out in the sun light. He then tried to argue me on that. *shakes head* it's a losing battle when there are no facts. LMAO

    Why did you set yourself up for such an onslaught SM? Couldn't they have just had nothing happen in the sunlight, or be weakened.. or something? Oh well... it's getting our series attention.

    Garlic...i forgot about that. People make fun of the sparkles, which I think is a good as any reason for vamps not to go out in the sun, but people forget about the ridiculous garlic that has been accepted for years. Who came up with that...and why garlic...why not anything more terrifying like...chili peppers? You get some chili pepper in your eyes and they feel as if they are on fire. Garlic, what...the worst is it gives you bad breath. Lol!

    i like the sparkling. it shows just how beautiful and perfect they are. and i am sorry but the sparkling was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better in New Moon. i was like...kinda like bella's reaction when she saw it....just that little like ahhh. and oh man when he was walking towards her in slow motion at school, that did it for me. and that little grin he gave like "yeah i know i'm hot" did it for me! lol

  • Honestly....not everyone is gonna like twilight, but pretty much everyone trashes twilight just because of the sparkling. I did too.

    S.M. gives us a very good reason for the sparkling, but the rest of the world doesn't care, and I'm 100% sure that twilight wouldn't be so passionately hated if the vampires didn't sparkle.

    I'm as much of a fan as any of you guys. I know the books by heart and have watched both movies more than once, I check for news and updates constantly and I defend the saga when my friends bring it up.....but I curse the day that S.M. thought it was actually a good idea to make them sparkle.

    Agreed! I tend to just over look the sparkly part...and when talking to the non-fans tell them to look over the sparkly part too cuz that is what they're fixated on. Maybe that's because of all the vampire legends/movies/shows before. I am totally aware of all the legends & such but am open to hear and see anyone's interpretation of it. Variety's good :) However, I do NOT think that blood and gore make a show either. Find me another way to show the same thing without a million gallons of blood...then we'll talk who's TRULY talented

    I'll tell you all exactly why people hate that these vampires sparkle: Most of the people who have a problem with it are really into horror films. And not into horror films the way some people are, like they just enjoy to go see it. They love everything about it. The associate vampires with horror and I'm sorry, but when you make a vampire sparkle, they're just not scary anymore. I've never been the least bit scared of any of the Twilight vamps, which has kind of been my problem with the whole series. There's not a sense of real conflict because I don't get the feeling that Edward really wants to eat Bella. Haha.

    So that's really one of the main reasons people I know don't like Twilight. I still think they should leave us alone and let us enjoy it!

    I don't think Twilight was written for a younger teen audience....some men in an office somewhere have just been determined to market the book and movie that way...steph herself said she wrote it for her own age group...which would have been 20's 30's.

    They look down on things for women and tend to label them either Tweenie market or bitter single women chick flicks....they just put twilight into the one that seemed best fit...

    here here! I love the sparkle. Who says Vampires don't sparkle? They sparkle because their skin is hard diamonds. It's the reflection of this uber hard paleness that causes the skin to sparkle. It's not like a tinkerbelle sparkle.

    And yes all of this male anger about Twilight is starting to p**s me off. They have this teenage male view of what a Vampire should be, and never miss a chance to insult anything and everything about Twilight. My best friends boyfriend is one of that type. He said that the Dracula Vampires would destroy Edward. I got so mad and asked him "Oh really, can Dracula pick up a bus and throw it?".

    Thank god my boyfriend actually LIKES Twilight and New Moon. But I have advice for girls whose husbands/boyfriends make an issue of it. If they refuse to watch New Moon with you, then the next time they want to go watch some Testosterone Fueled idiot movie like "Transformers" or "X-Men" then politely tell him "Go by Yourself".
    Why should you be expected to make money for those films while their fans do nothing to support New Moon?

    Sorry about the long post. I just hate to see how New Moon is being pigeonholed as a teen or chick movie because girls like it. We are not second class citizens.

    Its true, sparkly vamps get laughed at from other people in the media, that was DS main issue with Twilight when he made his comments way back, I see there points, but its the way SM wrote it, I think she wanted them not to be so "evil" but beautiful, just another way of looking at vamps.

    I hate it when people because laugh when you say the vampires is Twilight "sparkle". Because there is a perfectly good reason to why they do that. They are predators, and they are attractive to their prey. Everytime Bella sees a vampire, the first thing she notices is how beautiful they are.

    Going back to the Third Wife story in Eclipse, when the "cold woman" came into the village, its says " she was the most beautiful thing human eyes had ever seen..she looked like the goddess of the dawn..the sun glittered off her white skin and lit her golden hair..some fell to their knees to worship her".

    Even Edward says "I'm the world's most dangerous predator, everything about me invites you in, my voice, my face, even my smell".

    And for the bleeding thing, I do love some blood and gore, but they obviously don't need the blood, they are dead. Newborn vampires are all crazy because the blood is still leaving they're system, then it's gone. And vampires are indestructable to everything, except wolves, so what would be the point of them bleeding?!

    Yay! Someone else gets it!! Every time I read criticism of the Saga I can find a way to defend it, just by referencing the stories. Seriously, if you have read the Saga, it all makes sense. I don't feel that anything left me thinking, "I wonder why she made it that way?"

    I always loved Anne Rice b/c she fully explained vamps from the beginning of time. Not that I believe they are real, but she made her explanation make sense and that's all that really matters.

    Even with SM not explaining their beginning, she touches on the subject...
    When Bella asked Edward where it all started he replies, "Well, where did you come from? Evolution? Creation? Couldn't we have evolved in the same way as other species, predator and prey? Or, if you don't believe that all this world could have just happened on its own, which is hard for me to accept myself, is it so hard to believe that the same force that created the delicate angelfish with the shark, the baby seal and the killer whale, could create both our kinds together?"

    This explanation makes it much more beautiful and mysterious to me. And I love how she ignores the 'normal' vampire rules and makes her own. What's the fun if she's just borrowing from Bram Stoker or anyone else? She has her own theory and it is unique. All the other stories are just the same creatures with different names. Twilight vampires are unique and beautiful.

    SM explains everything which makes it all make sense to me. Besides, the most important thing that all the media is missing is that this is a love story. It is so much more than a human, a vampire, and a werewolf. It is a love story of epic proportions and I don't think this is merely pop-culture that will fade away in a few years.

    reading it I never saw the sparkling the way it is in the movie, you know when someone has REALLY great skin, it kinda glows, like when you put on an illuminator base under make-up?? I saw it as that to the nth degree but more natural... everytime I see Edward sparkle, his nose freaks me out...... lol

    I know, blasphemy, but I have never really liked it.

    But at the same time, it irks me when people say "Vampires don't sparkle." And why don't they? Because YOU say that they don't. They are fictional characters to begin with. So why can't someone come along and be creative and change it up a bit. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

    But them going out in the daylight thing is ok. :(

I think she made vampires too invincible; to me they should still bleed and be more human, as weird as that sounds. And the sparkling just seems weird now, or maybe it's because we've only seen Edward sparkle and his perfectness is getting kind of annoying. If we see Jasper sparkle... I might change my mind ;]

    Actually, it isn't the tradition for the to burn in the sunlight... it's just one of them. Most vampire myths have them being either weakend in the sun light, or just nothing happening, they just preferred the night. I'll take the nothing please :D

    I always found the traditional Vampire lore silly. That's why I never liked them until Twilight. I mean, a Vampire traditionally was undead and the only way to kill one was to drive a stake thru it's heart, right? EXCEPT all you had to do was drag one into the sun and they were dead??? So, why all this trouble with using a stake and then hiding the body so nobody could pull out the stake, etc???? Just put it in the sun and voila no more vamp.

    It all just doesn't make sense. Sparkle away Edward I love you just as you are :)

    I agree! SM's vampires are way harder to kill than "traditional" vamps. Angel was always getting cut and poked and who knows what else. I'd like to see any of those Sunnydale demons try something with the Cullens. Hmmph.

    The thing that bugs me about the haters is this: everyone's always complaining about nothing being original. Be it books or movies or whatever. Well, guess what. SM went and wrote something original and now she gets bashed for it. Make up your mind's people.

    I think that is a complete stupidity discussing if the vampires sparkle or not and if the special- effects artist likes it or not...they are to obtain what the director or wathever demands...we have seen so many fictional films with so many absurdities and we have to buy them all, and special effects artist explaining how much they worked on this or that and how much effort, but when it comes to Twilight there must be complains...I can´t understand it, they must do what they must do to keep their jobs and let the writer imagine what he/she wants because after all is her imagination...

    I like the sparkle on the vamp's. They stand out alone. To me the difference makes it better. Vampires do not have to bleed and I would rather not see them do that. I honestly like the fact that they dont die in the sun. Again they stand alone because SM didnt copy someone else's style.

I'm all for changing the rules, but I think sparkly vamps are little too cheesy. :) I sometimes wish Stephenie's vamps were a tad more traditional. I love the blood, the gore, the fangs! Good ol' fangs are what makes vampires so alluring.

    SM dreamt the story this way, it would be hard for her to change that initial vision just because some people might not like it. She wrote it for herself.
    The vampires I write about can eat food but it poisons them, they can drink alcohol and they can become human again. I laugh in the face of established vampire lore!

  • Well.. let's be honest here... vampires aren't dead. They are UNdead. Neither dead nor living. Very important to make that note. And yes, since they live off of blood, of course they can bleed as well.

    Vampires aren't animated corpses, like zombies. Their bodies function, and heal. Just like living bodies do.


    As for the.... sparkling.
    Well.. I have a hard time with it. I love the story. I love the books, and the movies. Love Love Love them. But the sparkling....

    IMO, a vampire being able to survive in sunlight is bad enough. But having them sparkle like diamonds? It takes away from the danger. It makes them tame. A vampire is supposed to be the ultimate predator, but I just can't deal with the sparkling at all.

    In the end, I've redefined the Twlight Saga. It is not a vampire story. It's a love story, in which there is an overwhelming amount of shiny sparkly demons.
  • Actually, I should probably explain why I'm so against the sparkling. Because Steph does give a "reason" for it in the books.

    Here's the thing. I can't associate vampires with dead bodies, or rocks. Because that's not what a vampire is, to me.
    A vampire is a former human, now turned into a predator.

    That their skin hardens over time, becomes tougher, more difficult to penetrate, yes, sure. But Vampires are all about the blood. Blood is life.
    But blood, in order to be of any use, has to be prevented from coagulating, and has to remain fluid.
    So if a vampires body is like a rock. Completely unchangable, hard, cold, solid through, then how will blood be of any use? How will they absorb it?

    I see how Stephs "vampires" make sense, to her and to other people, but I cannot in any way, call them vampires, with my good will intact.
    So rather than call them vampires, just because they drink blood, and live forever, I'll call them glitter-demons. It's just my way of coping, so I can keep loving the love story.

    Besides, if you gotta call them vampires, at least give them fangs. It's sexy as hell!

    Edward is not the only vampire that sparkles. There is a scene in New Moon when Edward, Bella, and Alice are following Jane and they walk through an area that has a small amount of sunlight. The sun touches the back of Alice's neck and it sparkles as she walks through that patch of sunlight.

I know there is all this talk about everyone loving vampires, but that isn't the draw for most people to the Twilight series. It is all about the LOVE between Edward and Bella and a little Jacob. sorry, I am Team Edward!
    The sparkles were better in New Moon, but it didn't bother me at all with the sparkles in twilight.

    I hate it when people say "vampires don't sparkle". Really?! When have you even met a vampire? That is the beauty of fiction. You can make up your characters to look/act/whatever however you feel because they aren't real. If Stephenie Meyers wanted her vampires to have rabbit ears, that would be her choice because they are her characters. Grant you, not everybody is going to like it, but that is their choice too. But there is no set of rules out there for what vampires or other characters are "supposed" to look like.

    I'm also not a big fan of gore either. Just like you mentioned here, I like the lightness of Twilight. It's not that I get nauseous or anything from seeing gory things. I just don't care for it. I do like The Vampire Diaries too, but again, there isn't really too much blood in that series either to where it turns me off.

    i dont like the fact that people are all googly eyed over the characters like they would ever have a chance with them. i find the movie and books as good entertainment but when you take it to far....it jsut doesnt comprehend in my mind why exactly people are so fascinated by the characters while they dont even take one look at the plot of the book or movie, all they care about is robert pattinson and taylor lautner. i dont find the ever so sexy things about them. wait scratch that, i havent found one GOOD looking thing about them. its just sickening. besides thhe characters are way off, why robert pattinson? didnt he play cedric diggory in harry potter and the goblet of fire? and taylor lautner? hes like a kitten. way to soft hearted to play the part of a werewolf. and another thing, why did stephanie stop at only book four, doesnt she know she has to back up the books for people keep coming on as big fans of this and then she immediatly stops at book four. hmmph, but think what you like.

    People can say vampires don't sparkle even though they are fictional because there's over one hundred years of precedent to prove it. Just because one author decides that they want vampires to sparkle in the sun doesn't mean that's the gold standard. Vampires die in sunlight, it's a HUGE part of the mythos. If this is removed, they're not technically vampires in the legendary sense.

    Also, as far as the whole Batman thing mentioned earlier, comic book fans are fickle. If all those changes were made, fans would either a.) Stop reading, b.) Raise hell with the company until the one who made the changes lost their job, or c.) raise hell with the company AND stop reading.

    The lesson here is, if you change something iconic, you're going to alienate a LOT of people. So just because you like your vampires covered in glitter doesn't give you license to tell other people they can't think it's stupid.
