Stephenie answered some of her fans’ questions from her website, StephenieMeyer.com.  She received nearly 2000 questions!!   She answered some of the hot topic questions …from Chris Weitz to the Black Volvo. :)   The main answer we’ve all been waiting for is the Midnight Sun question.

To address the many, many questions about Midnight Sun:

I am not working on Midnight Sun now. I don’t have a plan for when I’ll get to it; I don’t know now what the right time for it will be.

In your questions, there were some erroneous conclusions about the situation which I’ll try to set straight. First, Midnight Sun is not finished and locked in a safe, waiting for me to be done angsting over the leak. If it were done, I would be throwing it on the bookstore shelves myself. I’d love to be able to give it to all the people who are anxiously waiting for it. Second, I am not upset about the leak. I haven’t been for a long time; I was over it after about three weeks. Third, and most important, I am not trying to punish anyone. Not the persons who leaked it, not the people who read the leak, nobody. As I said, it would make me very happy to be able to give it to anyone who wants it.

So why the hold up? Because it’s not finished and lying in a safe. It’s not done, and finishing it is not a simple matter of sitting down in front of my computer and typing out the words; the words have to be there in my head to type out, and right now, they’re not. I have to be in the zone to write any story, and trying to force myself into that zone is a waste of time, I’ve found. I’ll get back to Midnight Sun when the story is compelling to me again. Just because people want it so badly does not make it more write-able; kind of the opposite, actually. I need to be alone with a story to write, and Midnight Sun feels really crowded, if you know what I mean.

People write for different reasons. I have always written to make myself happy. If I’m enjoying a story, feeling the creativity flow, engrossed in a world, then I write and I write fast. If I’m not into it, I can’t write. I’ve never been someone who writes on demand and I can’t imagine working that way. As cool as it would be to say to my favorite author, “You know, I’d really like to read a great book about a narwhal mafia. Write that for me, ‘kay?” or even “I’d love a sequel to that last one,” that’s not how it works. How it works is that my favorite author writes a new book about whatever he/she is interested in. Maybe it takes a year, maybe it takes five. If it’s something I want to read, I buy it or I check it out at the library. If not, I find something else to read. The end.

(All of this goes for writing about vampires in general, too. Vampires and I? We’re on a break.)

I’m pretty sure this won’t slow the pleadings and the demands, but I didn’t want you to think I was ignoring the question.

In the meantime, there are so many great books out there. I’ve got some recommendations on my site, and any librarian would love to show you more options. Same goes for independent bookstore employees. Ask for guidance, and they will fill your arms with awesomeness!

Alrighty then.  I hope this satisfies your questions on Midnight Sun.  No?  Yeah, me neither.

  • I've got to say this, because its been bugging me since the Oprah interview...

    Stephenie .. I love you .. really I do. You gave me something (and all of us) that has brought me close to so many ppl that I would never have talked to, or have met, if it wasn't for the Saga. For that, I am grateful.

    However

    You need a break from the very thing that made you a rich and successful person?

    She almost makes it seem like she is turning her back on Vampires. The very thing that put her where she is today. The Host would never have been known, never have been thought of to be made as a movie. If it wasn't for the Twilight Saga.

    That is just MY opinion.

    Remember guys...she was a stay at home mom before she started writting the twilight books. She didnt have any intentions of becoming a famous author, she just wrote the book based on a dream/idea she had. She still has little kids at home to raise who need her attention, and she may be perfectly content with that and not write anymore books. It's just a hobby for her not a career. In my opinion, I dont really care for her to write Midnight Sun....I would much rather her write a book of a love story of Renesmee growing up with Jacob and the other half human/half vampire kid from BD (can't think of his name). And Jacob being like Edward was to Bella. Kinda weird maybe? but that would be a more interesting read for me.

    But remember - Nahuel was more interested in Bella, not Renesmee.
    He was fascinated that Bella survived that kind of birth, and knows how his mother would have loved him if she could have. And he found a peace with what he was...(I hope I got that right? Or, at least that's what I got from it)

    I'm going to have to re-read BD now cause its bugging me!! I kind of got from it that he kept looking at Bella while she was holding Renesmee or something and it creeped her out. I think Nahuel was intrigued of knowing there was another person like him out there, half vamp/human, and not only that a girl!! If not, it would still make for a good story line..Nahuel and Jacob both fighting for Renesmee!!

    Yeah, let me know what you think when you re-read it. I know eveyone's impression is different sometimes. :O) I could have it all wrong...lol. I do remember her being creeped out too. If I recall, Bella thought he was looking at Renesmee, but Edward corrected her?

  • I'm fully aware of what Stephenie's family situation is. I'm a stay at home mother as well, and also am aware that children need full attention. However, there are mothers who have careers, who still raise children up to be perfectly well rounded kids. It depends on the person as a mother, not whether or not they stay at home or work.

    I would like her to finish Midnight Sun OR do a 5th book. But the way she is wording things, she seems somewhat ungrateful, and is turning her back on her fans.

    I would like to once AGAIN bring up the following points:

    I completely agree. I love reading books and going to bookstores but I never heard of or saw Twilight (surprisingly) anytime I went.

    Had it not been for this movie, I would have never known about it.

    She can't possibly turn her back on us now! :( She's had such an increasing fan base thanks to these movies and the beautiful Rob. Love it Stephanie! Love it, Embrace it, and make more of it! :)

    That's how I was. I saw the movie first. Then my friend let me read her Twilight book to see what I missed, and I was hooked. 2 days later I went and got the whole series. I was thankful that all of them were out then, cause I don't think I could have waited a year between each!!!! lol

    me too! Literally right after I watched the movie, I went to Barnes & Noble and bought the book set. Everyone says the Twilight movie was bad, but it was good enough to get me hooked! Agreed, I don't know HOW people could read just one book at a time and have to wait forever for the next one to be released! I'd die.

    I loved the movie the first 5 times I saw it...lol! But when I watch it now, I can see what Rob means about wanting to play it better. Not that he was bad...heaven no, but they made a small budget film and I can see they were limited. I'm excited for New Moon and the rest. My butterflies grow more each day that it gets closer to theatres!!!!

    I wish Oprah would have asked her if she'd like to continue the series...even if she isn't 'vampire' dedicated right now? She can easily do more than 4 books. Stuff was left open, and i'd love to see alot of how it would play out.

    She did write the Twilight Saga for 6 years, which is alot, so I understand the break. I'd just like to know if there might ever be more????

    Tell us your waiting until BD is made and then you'll finish or tell us not to even bother waiting cause your never going to finish because your p*ss*d it was leaked cause your not over that's obvious!

    I think what Stephenie was referring to here was her "creative process". She can write it right now, but if she's not in the zone, it won't come out right. I can appreciate that. I have many days when I get up and I'm not "in the zone" to teach 30 disrepectful 9 year olds, and it doesn't come out right.

    But I do it. Every stinkin' day... and some days are crappy, but some days are surprisingly AWESOME!

    Also, the wonderful thing about being a writer is that you don't have to just put it out there. You can sit on it, go back, revise and edit it!!! What I wouldn't give to be able to go back and edit some of my less stellar moments with my students!!!! How about a comprimise? If we agree all agree to buy and read your next book will you try, just try to write more about our beloved vampire world? It worked for Bella and Edward...

    I am sorry Stephenie, but it seems to me like you know we have expectations and are reluctant to meet them. We love you and support what you do. Please don't misconstrue that to mean that we don't want anything from you. We want more. Because we love it.

    However, if you are truly done with vamps for a while.... may I suggest you explore werewolves a bit more? Perhaps from Leah's perspective? Just a thought....

    I totally get that, the whole creative process. I understand that she just can't run to her computer and write a book. I'm sorry if it sounded like thats what I am saying.

    Basically, its her tone, and the message she is sending to the fans. I dunno. But I'm def. not the only person who feels this way.

And at least for me, it helped me understand the parking lot scene a little better since that part is like a little too rushed in Twilight... though I wished she would have left it AFTER the meadow scene =( ... I was really looking forward to read that part in Edward's POV </3

    Don't really think it's about money. She seemed to be having a good life before the books. I think she is content right now with the way things are. Like I said on my earlier post, not really interested in knowing Edward's side of the story on the same STORY, just my opinion. Would much rather have a book of Renesmee and Jacob's love story (when she is grown up of course).

    Ok, here is my deal, Stephenie.

    I understand that you need to be in the zone to continue to write Midnight Sun. The juices must be flowing and all that shiz. I get that, I truly do. I do not want a MS book that is thrown together and feels forced for the sake of releasing the book just because of a high demand ...*cough* ... BD.

    However, I get the sense and the impression from everytime you talk about this that you are so over doing MS and are just not that interested in at least "trying" to get in the zone.

    Not being mean, but inspiration has to be derived from something. Please realize that we adore the Twilight Saga, and have made you a very wealthy woman. We have donated time, money, and our souls to this franchise.

    All we ask at this point is for this book. So, please, try to make a more concerted effort of "getting in the zone" ... "getting the juices flowing" .... and/or "getting the inspiration."

    Because we are DYING here.

    Here's the thing... I read Fan Fic.. like the rest.. I also WRITE it...and sometimes... I'll get writers block.. Sure... but.. know what?? the only way to get over it .. is to push myself... The only way I'll read Midnight Sun is if she also writes the rest of the series in Edward's POV and have it ADULT... fade to black is fine for teenagers.. but come on.. Edward's 108 years old.. and a GUY.....

    Yeah, I do fanfic myself .. which I am brand spanking new at, but I already get the whole writer's block thing.

    But, for the love of all that is sparkly, she can go to a private island out in the middle of nowhere, which she can afford, BTW, and get in the zone.

    I am just not sympathizing with her issues right now. And she is coming across bitter even though she is pushing forth the concept that she is not.

    And I agree with you, she doesn't appear to be interested in it. My deal is that she isn't having writer's block when it comes to writing sequels to the Host from scratch, but she blanks when she has to write a story she already knows of, but in another perspective? The story is already set, all she needs to do is put Edward in the narrator's seat.

    I'd like to point that I'm not bitching at Catherine Hardwick, I really believe her when she says she tried to do her best and that she loved the saga as much as we do, but with this *arggg* awful screenplay/screenwriter and the low budget... I can understant it without getting too angry...

    I think those of you, who can "only" think about having Midnight Sun finished, and who have disregarded Stephenie's feelings on "why" she isn't working on Midnight Sun, I have three words for u:
    SHAME ON YOU!
    We would not have this beautiful world of Twilight, if it weren't for that woman. If she wants a dang break, i think she derserves it! We can either have a forced, crappy version of Midnight Sun thrown at us, or we can wait until she is "in the zone" again. Walk a mile in someone's shoes, or consider what it would be like to be them, before complaining about having your precious book when "you" want it. She has a family, and a life, other then writing Twilight novels to please every last one of us...... Tsk Tsk.

    I was one who suggested we hound SM on the questions about MS, but that's only b/c I wanted to know more of her plans - something other than *shudders* 'indefinitely'

    Now that she has explained, I understand, and I'm grateful that she plans to one day finish it. You are exactly right - we don't want MS just thrown together and telling her to 'try to get the juices flowing' is just asking her to force it out and rude. She has to write what's in her head, and if The Host is in her head right now then she needs to get in on paper.

    I love Anne Rice and can compare this with her work. She wrote extensively about Vampires (10 in the Vampire Chronicles and a few other individual vamp novels). But in between all of the vampires she also wrote the Mayfair Witches, and many other beautiful novels. I loved her as an author and read everything she ever wrote.

    Look at JK Rowling - she has never written anything besides The Harry Potter series. I think she has plans to, but it makes me wonder if she can write about anything besides wizards.

    I wondered if Stephenie Meyer was a great writer or if I just loved the Twilight world so much - then I read The Host. Yes, she is a great writer and I look forward to reading everything she puts her name on! And I am so sick of people making this about money!!! As if paying her to finish MS will work. We all know that she's made a ton of money off of TL and she is very thankful for that. Now her husband can stay home and help with the kids and give her time to write, but I don't think money has ever been her driving force - it was just the result. She wrote TL b/c she had a world growing in her head and wanted it on paper. I wish I could thank Emily myself for making her publish.

    To sum up this very long rant... I love Midnight Sun and wish with all my heart she would finish it, but I respect Stephenie Meyer enough to understand where she is coming from. Take her advice and find something else to read and when Midnight Sun is finally released I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

    Edward will always be on my mind, but until MS is finished I will just have to settle for my 'distractions.' (I'm reading Wuthering Heights right now)

    She has a superb gift for writing, and I know whatever book she gives us, will touch us in some way or another. She's gotten people who don't even like to read, to start reading.

    I respect her and all but i think we are going to have to wait SOOOOO much longer because of the movies now :(

    More and more people (like myself) have discovered the movies when they were being advertised and more people will discover it as the movies keep coming out. Then they will read the books and find out about Midnight Sun and want to read it. Then a new group of people will ask her for it and she won't be able to write. :(



    It's such ashame because it was such a good book. I hope she really is writing it and just won't tell us. Then when it seems like all hope is lost she will be like "SURPRISE!!!!" and it will be out on shelfs in stores. :)

    Just trying to think positive. :)

    (maybe Chris Weitz and her can work together to take some of the pressure off of her and just make a movie about Midnight Sun :) Maybe they can even add in the scenes that were left out of the first movie (i'm not saying i didn't like it i'm just saying i missed not being able to see certain parts)

    Twilight the remake but Chris Weitz's version------with Stephenie's approval of course) :)

    I just hope people don't bug her too much where she says she just won't write it ever. At least now she says she's on a break.

    Well in the US it comes out on the 20th but I'm going on a Sunday because although i want to be a part of the crowd on opening night (Friday) I also want to be able to hear the movie. haha :)

    I am, I suppose, Team Switzerland. I loveeee Edward so much, but I am crazy about wolves too!!! I find this question really hard because I am too old to pash on either Rob or Taylor but if I was younger I would have a real hard time choosing. But if it's Edward or Jacob then I suppose my heart would be with Edward. But I do have a real soft spot for Seth!!!!!! Oh and Carlise too. Daft aren't I ????
    The music is so much better than I thought it would be and it sounds really right for the film. Of course being a Muse fan I have to say how thrilled I am that they got to be in it again. <3

    Some so-called Muse fans are really snobbish about people only getting into them through Twilight.

    I found Muse before Twilight through my daughter and I am eternally grateful. Mind you later on she got me into Twilight too, bless her.

    Went to see them play the O2 in London last Thursday and it was in my top five all time best bits of my life - they were awesome. :)

    The Resistance is sooo good, I love the wide range of music on it and Matt's voice is sooo "soothing" (Undisclosed Desires) and I love nothing better than to take the dog to the woods, plug in my Ipod and play their albums one after the other. :)

    Look out for some other Muse nuts on this site, they are around, and they are real freindly too. :)

    I've been reading the website for months now and even though I sometimes really wanted to comment on stuff, I never did. So on this I just had to comment...

    Have you guys ever written anything? (Don't know if someone mentioned it earlier, didn't have time to read all of these comments :D)
    Well, I have. I've written a few novels and posted them on a website and to my extreme surprise, people really liked them. So I started a sequel to one of my novels. At first I was really into it, the story and the world of it, but then something happened and I just couldn't get into the zone. I really tried a few times to continue just because my readers wanted more. And I'll tell you. The stuff I wrote pushing myself was really crappy. And I'm not kidding at all, I just couldn't get it right at all! It was heartbreaking 'cos I loved the story and I loved to write it but I just couldn't anymore. To this day, I've written a total of 7 chapters of the sequel and I just can't get into it anymore. Not because I don't want to, just because the story isn't coming to my head, as Stephenie said. I totally get her point of view, 'cos I'm in there too.

    As fo the Midnight Sun... Hell yeah I wanna read it too, but only if Stephenie herself is satisfied with it and gets the story from her heart. 'Cos if it's not coming to her easily, it's not worth it to her, and I bet she doesn't wanna ruin the story by pushing herself and destroying her will to write. (Even though I bet we'd all love it no matter what, right? ;))

    Sorry, I just had to get this off my chest, 'cos the writer's block is bothering me as well :)

    Yeah, I sorta admire Stephenie for her work because her story that she told about when she first started to write, you know, when she just thought about the story all day and practically lived it and when she wrote, she wrote like dosens of pages at once of it, I relate to it so well because that was me as well! I miss writing so much but I'm just so stuck with everything right now... Sometimes I get the feeling again but then I don't have a good enough idea to write about and that's it again... Oh, a little beside the point here, sorry :D

    I totally understand though, I really really REALLY wanna read Midnight Sun one day and I hope beyond everything that Stephenie will get her "zone" back soon :) I just know it's gonna happen!

    I know someone who's been in your shoes. But don't give up!

    My suggestion, keep writing. Get those chapters written out, rough draft and crappy if you think. You'll be suprised how you can inspire yourself...

    You have plenty of attempts to go back in and change anything. Let those brain juices go, even if there's nothing there. I know it sounds silly...but trust me. I want you to succeed. Books are awesome and no one who loves to write should slip through the cracks!! :O)

    It's a good book. You should read it if you get the chance, but it is completely different from Twilight. I had to read it once to rid myself of all Twilight-type expectations. Then I read it a second time and really liked it. The way she has written actually makes much more sense to put on film than Twilight (I think). I'm pretty sure it'll be great!

    Definetly try it. Stephenie is a good author. Whatever she writes will be good. It doesn't hold the same attraction for me as Twilight does, but I like it in a completely different, less consuming way (sort of the way Bella liked Jacob in comparison to Edward!)

    But if she's done after 4 books, then she's done. We have to focus on the wonderful world of Twilight that she gave us in the first place and be oh-so-happy with that. Plus we get 4 movies too. Hurray!!! And an awesome cast who will continue to go on entertaining us for years to come.

    As fans, we have to give her credit where credit is due... :O)

    I know it's hard to accept. Stephenie loves these characters as much as we do. Remember, she wrote Twilight for 6 years already. She gave us 4 wonderful books, and creative brains move on all the time. It'll be okay.

    I think she'll finish, but for her first...we can't push. I'm going to take her at her words that if we leave her alone (and she meant that respectully I believe) then she'll feel more at ease to tackle our beloved Edward again.

    She's on burnout, I guess. That happened to me before. Though if she pushes herself even when not feeling like it, she might end up pleasantly surprised. I've done that before.. felt stuck and just kept going, even though it was all blah.. and all of a sudden I've written down something I hadn't planned and I end up loving it and I'm all into it again.

    Yeah, FF might stir her up. lol. There are certainly some awesome, well-written ones out there!

    I read this last night and I hate to say it but get over the bitterness of the draft being leaked

    It's been how long now? Did CH in all her kooky glory leak it or what?

    SM said it's locked in a safe. Right. How are you supposed to get in the right frame of mind when you keep it locked away out of sight?

    I don't want to sound harsh but this makes no sense to me.

    I also noticed how she contradicted herself in this Fan-FAQ and the Oprah interview. On Oprah she said she pictured Rob as EC, blah blah.

    Then on her site, she says she had a hard time visioning Rob as Edward? What?! Did I read that correctly? I'm speaking from memory. Plus I'm reading FF now, so my time-line of events might be muddled.

    Anyway, maybe she needs to unlock her safe, go to a remote island by herself for a year if necessary, take a pen and paper (laptops won't work where she needs to be) and freaking finish MS!!!!!!!!

    You can't be any more "alone" than that. grrrrrrrr this makes me mad. Ok back to reading NM and fanfic.

  • why does everyone think twilight needs to be remade? even if the budget was quite low and the make up sucks, I really liked that movie. The score is great, for instance. What really pisses me off is the little details they changed from the book, like it was Edward who first told Bella to hang out together by giving her a ride to Seattle and not Bella.
    But apart from it, I think it's fine..



    I'm really looking forward to see NW, anyway. See if they've done better :D

    I think the leak made me want to read the book more.. I read what is there to read on SM website and fell in love with that book more than twilight. So I don't think she should be mad about the leak it seam's like the book just got promoted a bit more, that's all.
    She says she's not mad and over it but, I just don't think that's the case here.. well I say get over it, things happen, and I'm seriously getting pissed that she has gotten us so into the series and now won't finish what she started! Eeeerrr!!! Doesn't she know some of us have no lives, or live vicariously through these books,lol! Pathetic but true; )
    Have any of you ever read any of her other books? I haven't I don't know why cause I read whenever I have time, but just can't get myself to read about aliens, I think that's what the host is about..

    Actually The Host was really good....i was worried that i wouldn't like it, but i love that one too. Its a lot different than the twilight world, but i love those characters too and i think once the movie comes out more people will read it too.
  • I didn´t like the first 150 pages of the Host but then I read the rest of the book in 2 days (Twice so far). It gets exciting when she goes out into the desert and I cried a lot.

    Midnight Sun is the best!

    I cant understand why she got that far and just stopped,the story is already written it just needs what Edwards thinking and seeing but I think she can take it further and make a version of new moon from Edwards point of view also!

    I´m totally sure that as she said when she writes a story is because the words are on her mind...well she started writing Midnight Sun because the words WERE ALREADY in her mind, right? and suddenly the have dissapeared?....I think she´s trying to open new markets so that she won´t be considered a vampire writer and that´s why she´s over with all the twilight stuff...in books I mean, but to say the she can only write when the words come to her mind and saying that she can´t write MS because there are no words...is like a little controversy for me...where have gone all the words then, she must have had them at the begining.....mmmmm....

    I understand if SM wants to stop writing Midnight Sun at the moment. It's just so overwhelming. For the past 2 years it's been Twilight 24/7, so it's understandable. Also, Midnight Sun got leaked out last year. It was terrible and SM was devastated because she didn't want to release Midnight Sun until she felt good about what she had written. I'm not going to be rushing her to finish writing Midnight Sun because it's her decision and when Midnight Sun gets published I'll read it.

    I think we should give ms meyer the time cuz i dont no about any of you but im not going anywhere im waiting for that book to come out and im going to get it right away when it does!! And its completely up to her if she feels that now isnt the right time to finish and that she doesnt have the energy then wouldnt you rather have her write what she truly thinks is right not just scraps that she thinks of? I dont think she owes us anything i mean she gave us the story line and the amazing characters with 4 amazing books to go with it!!! If anything we owe her!!! Thank you steph take ur time girl we luv you no matter what=]!!
