Twilight To Be Taught In Cambridge Literature Class

in Stephenie Meyer, Twilight

According to Geekosystem.com, Cambridge University will include Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight book series in their works of literature.

Soon, students at Cambridge University will be getting a new supplement to their educations: books from Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series.

According to BBC News, a newly-opened Cambridge center for the study of children’s literature (they call it a “centre,” naturally) will cover, among other things, Twilight, the Harry Potter series, and video games as works of literature.

In an interview, the soon-to-be director of the center/centre dismissed suggestions that Twilight and other contemporary series are “trash,” and even said that academics had something to learn about the ethical development of young people from children’s series and video games:

BBC News:

Professor Maria Nikolajeva, who will be the centre’s first director, said it was important to get an understanding of what was influencing young people.

She said: “It’s easy to say that these things are just kids’ fashions or that they’re trash, but I don’t believe that’s good enough.

“If what we regard as trash is popular with young people, we need to know why and whether, as researchers and teachers, we can offer them something that addresses the same needs but also deals with these themes in a critical and ethical way.”

She added many trainee teachers did not understand the significance of the latest children’s books or films when they went into the classroom.

“Studying this can help us deal with questions which are important not only for the children themselves, but for adults as well,” she added.

I love this!! I would so ace this class. LOL!

well, perhaps the most fun here is that the mormons promote this as a chastity movie. can you say "completely without scruples!" mormons will do anything for a buck. they are the pimps of the world when it comes to religion. what's the most fun though is that stephanie meyers (or whatever her name is) just raves and raves about how she had never ever seen a movie about vampires or read anything about vampires and this all just came to her in a dream. as in, (IMH)) i'll just see how much i can life and i'll say it came to me in a dream because who canargue with that?"

next up, apparently, they are warming another mormon writer cause the publishing industry has decided to milk the mormons since they are told what to do as a group.if ya can say "ten thousand copies were sold" but ya don't know that 9999 were sold to mormons cause they were Told to buy them, ya might actually think someone enjoyed the book/movie.

ya know if the mormons so good at this, ya'd think they'd make their own movies. oh wait they have and they are all dull as dishwater. ya see ya need some Real people and someone who has had s-e-x to understand what passion is about.

What the ? bullshit. Twilight is not literature, it is full of plot holes, Edward is abusive, and Bella has no brain which in turn comes with no character development and absloute stupidity, she does nothing for the women of the world. I think they should consult the wider community to find out what exactly is influencing young people because it certainly doesn't influence me! I think most twilight fans, should pick up a novel with some literary value. Cambridge has just lost big points on the academic scale if this is what they are dealing with.
  • I hate twilight
Oh my goodness this is seriously ridiculous... and seriously CAMBRIDGE UNI?! have they lost their minds?? they're basically asking of people to rip off their well-earned, respectable status!!!
  • alexis
now all i need is purdue to pick this up and im good!!! (im possibly going to purdue or IU yes i live in indiana but not lafayette :( grrrr)
  • alexis
what...? WHAT...? OK IM GOING TO CAMBRIDGE!!! FORGET PURDUE!! lol....
  • nickcullen

  • madurst
What a dork - I can't even proofread my own comments - ugh!
  • madurst
I love it! I think she is a brilliant write with both Twilight & Midnight Sun--so much foreshadowing; such an internal struggle of good vs evil; suchy symbolism throughout the book. Truly, it is a wonderful, beautiful novel!
  • McVampy - TEAM BLACK V-NECK
this would be the one thing i would enjoy at school.

twilight really is the next romeo and juliet!
  • Kittypurr

  • eddie
i can't believe they called harry potter and twilight "trash"
  • PhoenixMP3 The One & Only
wow this is an achievement for Stephanie she's becoming a classic while sh'e still alive ...
  • AC07
No fair! I am taking children's literature at my college. We will be reading Harry
Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, but that is the most exciting thing my class has to offer. If we had Twilight, I would not be struggling to stay awake in this class. Wish I could take this class instead!
  • TeamEdwardsMoan
This is fantastic! Cambridge University is going to include our beloved Twilight finally :D I knew they'd see sense in the end! Whoever is calling Twilight "trash" needs to find something to be a fan of and back off. Just because we totally love something they hate doesn't give them a right to say that.

Doing English Lit A Level at the moment, but I highly doubt I will get to study Twilight unfortunately :( I can always hope. Hey, we already are A* people lol. To repeat previous comments, I would ACE this class! lol
  • csham
I attend Glenville State College in West Virginia, and the Adolescent Literature class uses Twilight as one of its novels, and the Children's Literature class uses Harry Potter.
  • Kez_MLIT
not fair that for english CW my friend did Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
    AND AT A-LEVEL
    booohoooo.
I would get A*'s in every twilight/hp classes.
perfect time for our geekiness to shine 8)
  • team flippy
What?!?! He calls this trash!?!??! Twilight...Harry Potter....Video Games?!?1!? The hell??....he needs to STFU! He doesn't know anything! I bet he just sits at home alone with no effing life..just sleep, wake up, and teach..repeat. >;P
I mean if he was gonna teach about this, he should like it, or else his gonna hate it even more. ;P
Anyways...I wish they taught us that for school!! I would do all my homework!!..I love HP and twilight!!! :D
  • If they had done this when I was in college, I might not have dropped my english class!! LOL!!!
  • crumble
Damn, should have listened to my mum when she said to apply to Cambridge!!

Although we don't study it fully, our seminar leaders often bring up Twilight to get us to think about heroines, romance etc.
I actually studied Harry Potter at ALevel, in a comparitive piece with Tom Browns School days ... amazing how similar the themes in each book are.

I just hope people don't start saying the courses are getting easier just because the focus area is becoming more modern. I plan on studying childrens literature in my third year (in first at the moment) with an emphasis on how language and themes have changed, NOT an easy topic!

Agree with those who say it's so important to understand what keeps children reading.
  • soprettyandrelaxing
My school already has a Twilight course(its not mainstream yet) and HP and LOTR and Star War and Star Trek. I attend a L/A college so we have more freedom in our course than public colleges.
  • Wolfi ♥(TEAM LEAH &TOMBAH)

  • Bellas<3SpiderFlippy -TeamJune
My mouth fell open in shock when he told her (and I quote): "Why would you want to read that cr@p?!"
I had to hold back my defensiveness.. I wasn't in the mood to be sent out of class.. LOL
  • VAMPLOVER CarolinaCullenCoven
That's when he should kept his opinions to himself , as a teacher. How rude. I can imagine the urge to give a finger salute. LOL
  • Bellas<3SpiderFlippy -TeamJune
And I already had a fangirl moment in one of his classes, so I don't think he would appreciate a finger salute.. LOL
  • VAMPLOVER CarolinaCullenCoven
    Hahahaha, probably not. LOL
  • Vampire_Fairy

    Yeah, baby! 12! LOL

Excellent. My mom taught for years, and as she always said, "Something that gets kids reading is wonderful.` Twilight & HP are prime examples of that, and I'm glad to see some attention put towards it at the academic level. *sigh* I wish I could go back to college now... :D
  • uinen

Hi Marie - love the new avi. It would be nice to have a dedicated 3 hours to talk about Twilight - as opposed to trying to find time here on NMM.org and EM.org in between work, RL, etc.

  • VAMPLOVER CarolinaCullenCoven
It just ain't fair, is it? LOL Darn
  • Whatever. Not too much more I could possibly learn or know about twilight by taking a class. I pretty much have that covered.
  • super-human-teeth-baby!
OMG! that is so cool! i would so ace that class! what age are they gunna teach it? and video games as well! wow!
  • ancha85
It is a children's literature class for Lit Majors in college!
    Awesome!

I am a Native Speaker Spanish teacher in Texas, and I teach the first chapter of "Twilight" / "Midnight Sun" as a Point of View and Characterization lesson in my class, and of course, then I "have" to let them watch the movie! It is sooo fun!

So many of my kids (more girls than boys of course, but some boys, too!)
that "hated reading", read at least some part of the Saga after our studying it in class and loved it! I was soo proud of them!

I totally agree with this professor! We have to get kids to start reading what is fun and interesting for them, then they will read other more "classical" things. This is especially true with SM's books, as she takes so many themes like classical lit like Shakespeare and Jane Austen.

Smart lady, this professor! I'd like to take her class, I'm sure she can teach me more things to use in my classroom!!
    AWESOME!
  • VAMPLOVER CarolinaCullenCoven
You sound like a teacher who cares *applauding you* We need more like you.
Hey, even everyday people like me would read more if it were this much fun. LOL Makes a lot of sense. *high five*
