BuzzSugar has an interview with New Moon director Chris Weitz. With the New Moon DVD out in store March 21st, Chris discusses his favorite scene in New Moon, Rob & Kristen’s relationship and what he wished ended up on the cutting room floor.
There are lots of different editions of the New Moon DVD. Which bonus features are you particularly excited about? I’m excited that my voice will finally be heard! For me, the fun thing was doing the commentary with Peter Lambert, my editor, because it kind of re-created the atmosphere in the cutting room. Peter’s a really funny guy, and we were able to delve into not only the behind-the-scenes moments, but to explain why certain things were shot or cut together in certain ways. So that, for me, was the most fun.When you go back and watch it again, are there things you’d like to change if you could? I would like to never have shot Rob and Kristen running through the forest and Kristen’s just turned into a vampire. Because everybody always laughs and it makes me feel terrible. [Laughs] I would have shot it a different way so it wouldn’t get that response. But otherwise, I’m very happy with things.
You must get lots of questions abut Rob and Kristen. Do you laugh it off or are you totally sick of hearing about it? I’m somewhat clueless — when you’re the director, you’re kind of like the school principal. Nobody really tells you anything. You really have no idea what’s going on. I’m the last person who would know about this kinda stuff. I’m sure you could get more from reading the paper.
What was your favorite scene to shoot in New Moon? I’m very fond of the memories that a lot of the scenes invoke in me. My favorite scene is probably somewhere between the very last scene, and the cliffhanger that it’s left on, and the scenes in Italy. Just the experience shooting those scenes was so magnificent. We were in this beautiful hillside town in Tuscany, and going home to fresh-made pasta every night, and surrounded by thousands of fans of the series while we were shooting it. I know I’ll never experience anything like that ever again.
What’s your take on the rumors that Breaking Dawn will likely be two movies, possibly in 3D? 3D seems to be the new thing that everything has to be. I think the good thing about 3D is that it can lend tremendous depth to a picture, and really make it extraordinarily lush, visually. And also that it gets people to go out to the theater. Film directors want people to see things in the theater, on the big screen, at least the first time. So that’s a good thing. As for the book being broken up into two films, I think it’s a good idea. There’s so much material in the final book that I think it’s warranted.How would you direct Breaking Dawn? Very carefully, because I think that you want to deliver the fans a faithful version of the book that they love. Yes, there’s a lot of extraordinary goings-on. So it’ll have to be done carefully.
How do you think the movie franchise has been affected by using different directors? I think it’s good for it, because I think there’s a tremendous amount of coherence thanks to a very strong cast, who care about getting their characters right. And I think that the fans’ interested will be un-dimmed, and I think it’s interesting to see the different visual approaches, different stylistic versions, different choices that different filmmakers take.
Are you excited to see Breaking Dawn, or will you inevitably be thinking about how you would have done it differently? I’m really excited to see it. I’m very excited to see it. I’m sure he’s done a really great job. I think that he’s, amongst other things, a much better action director than I am. So I’m really keen to see the action sequences. I think that there are a lot of things that I would have been very daunted by the prospect of shooting, which he will have taken in stride. I’m excited to see it whenever I can.
Oh my Chris Weitz. How I love thee, but yeah the frolicking vampire scene? Everyone laughed in the theaters (including me) at that scene. I imagined Bella hunting a deer or something. I still love you!
I’m still mad that Rob, Kristen or Taylor are not doing the commentary with you. I don’t care how funny Peter Lambert is!

I thought back to how the scene was in the book and Bella was actually wearing a dress that Alice put her in the first time she went out into the woods to hunt. Hehe…oh the vampire frolicking scene.
I have decided that it was the music that ruined the moment. The scene in itself is neat, dream-like AND we get a glimpse of Bella as a vampire.
But the music made it cheesy and laughable. Poor CW, the idea was good it just somehow was ruined. Not to mention, the music was all lullaby like when we are in the middle of a suspenseful confrontation with the Volturi.
i mean, the vampire vibe is hardly there… reminded me of a really cheesy 40's movie flashBACK..

Yeah, in the book she describes the dress as this satin tight-fitting dress that she had to rip up the sides to run in. The dress in New Moon looks like a Jane Eyre dress that Bella would've fantasized about when she pictures herself in Edward's time and how getting married young wouldn't seem “strange” then.

Jacob's my favorite character and he would have been the IDEAL guy for me, when I was a teenager!But I totally agree that Bella had to choose Edward. If she had not, someone would have had a broken heart (Jake had one, but only for a little while, Thank God!).Her choice was the best for her, Edward and Jacob in the end!

I didn't really mind the 'frolicking' scene… I am just saw in love with the movie, that I can see no wrong. I'll be so disappointed to see the 'deleted scenes' – as I always wish they would keep them in the movie!!!

I really do love Chris W. You could really tell that he cared about the film & the fans. But that scene had the potential to be GREAT; (Bella's going to be such a beautiful vampire) they just made all the wrong choices for it. The music, their clothes, & the slow motion ruined it! Vampires do not frolic. I see that scene totally different in my head . . .
I laugh at that part too. I can't tell if they meant to make it funny or if it was supposed to be serious.

The movie seemed a bit choppy and i wasnt taken through the rollercoaster fo emotions that i felt when i read the book.
The entire movie was just sad and sombre.
But after watching it repeatedly i have realized why that was….it was the score. In twilight there were two prominant scores….one to convey the danger and one to convey the light lovey E/B moments….
NM didnt seem to have this strong distinction in the score.
The ending was ok but i definitly thought the frolicking was uncalled for.
But it wont stop me from wearing my DVD out when i finally get it!
Yea I agree with CW on the frolicking scene but well it did make me laugh. I think he did good better than CH. He stuck to the story. I read an article where a source said the return to forks scene was the last to be deleted and it was done last minute by SCUMMIT. The source went on and said it was deleted because it ran to long aka pacing was off/slow. The source also said Victoria had alot more scenes more than the snack car scene but told CW to cut her scene down to a small role then after the cast with BDH viewed in August they told CW to cut her scenes again to a cameo. the article was done by one of those gossip mag so who knows. I wouldnt pull it past SCUMMIT.
After watching that scene in the theater, I could only imagine Kristen's reaction when she heard about what scene they were filming that day.

MY interpretation of the scene is Alice showing Aro what HE wanted to see or happen in the future. So Chris, don't feel “embarressed or ashamed” for that scene.
I believe “Twilight” had more and far worse scenes (i.e. the stupid biology field trip scene, SPider Monkey scene, Rosalie talking and she's not even in the shot scene etc. etc, etc) need I say more!

new moon is my fave book. i had such high hopes for it. so when i left the theater i was in shock and SORELY disappointed. it was too rushed! no sooner you felt sad until they thrust you into a suspenseful moment and back again! you never did have enough time to feel or grasp the emotions. it was choppy.

I did not understand why everyone around me in the theater was laughing at the scene where Bella was a vampire I love that scene. * bella and jack time i couldnt tell she was falling for him

Personally, I think the worst part about the frolicking scene was the CLOTHES. It wouldn't have been as laughable if they weren't wearing clothes from a different time period.
Honestly, there are a TON of ways to show that Bella was changed to a vampire, so I don't know why they chose to do it that way. However, the more I see that scene, the less it bothers me. I really enjoyed NM. I'm 100% Team Edward, but there was a time in that movie that I was really liking Jacob, and I never really liked him in the book. So that impressed me.
He should not be worried about it… Or feel awful.

Hey McNutters, this exactly proves my point, people like different scenes, I loved the “frolicking” scene but can't stand the biology trip, and you liked the bio trip. To me the bio trip was just (in my opinion) as a second thought, should have stuck with the “blood typing scene” so much better and it flowed, just my opinion.
Her scene is one of my favorites in the movie. Most professional film critics agree some even said it was their favorite part. I am going miss her in Eclipse it will not be the same.:( BDH acted her little heart out and try to mimic her but I doubt she will success because she is a different face and actress. So sad:( I hate how they well mostly BDH keeps bring up how its perfectly decribed in the book I swear I really dont think she has never ever read the books and she keep being up this sh*t about the continuity of Victoria and creative version of the director well Scummit f***ed that up in hiring her. Trust me they could have work it out in “8 days” well more like “5 days”. IDOITS. They already had the permits for the location and they never asked to switch dates or locations. Some source i think may have either worked in the crew production or for vc gov. told a gossip mag. I dont know if its true and again I would not put it pass scummit. I know its too late. But it still pisses me off that they did that to her. From what I read in yes another gossip mag a source said RL told Summit in June as accordance to her contract that she took a small role in BV and that Rachelle was only told by Summit on Monday before the annoucement that she was being replaced. She was given no choice in the matter.Scummit could have said you have 24 hrs to decide but no they just told her bye bye. EFFING RUDE. Like I said this came from a gossip mag who know and again I would not put it pass Summit in doing. My belief if she really didnt tell them til right before ComCon why wasnt she given the choices why just replace her they could have made her pay the fees and stuff. why fire her? Because it is pretty clearly she and the whole cast were caught off guard. So clearly she didnt get a choice. She could have gotten out of BV. Its a small role. I am pretty so the producers and director would have let her. I smell a fish rotting away at scummit. I am going to see the movie but only for the ORIGINAL CAST.I support them not the replacement professional. OMFG I did it again so sorry I ranted damn it.Sorry.

OMG- I could not stand the stupid field trip scene! I never understood why they took so much of the book out and added in the most random stuff and stupid lines- spider monkey, etc. I felt like so much of the character development and relationship development was missing- hell half the story was gone! At least New Moon stuck to the book!

I didn't care for the scene initially, but when I thought about it as a little shout-out to Breaking Dawn, I tolerated it a little more. I'm ready for some deleted scenes!!! Hurry up DVD!
Honestly I think you're 100% absolutely right about the dress. I think that's what made it seem kind of silly. I laughed and I never even knew why nor did I want to laugh. It just came out and I was shocked by it. I think what made it sort of cheesy and caused everyone to laugh was the dress Bella was wearing and the way she had a ribbon in her hair. She looked like someone had plucked her straight out of an old school Disney movie like Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, or Cinderella. I think if she had a more sexy dress on like she's described wearing in Breaking Dawn then it wouldn't have made people laugh. I think there was just something about the combination of that outfit with the scene being in slow motion that made it seem cheesy to some people.
Still I feel awful for reacting that way especially now knowing that it made CW feel terrible. He's so sweet and he really did do his best so I can't stand him feeling bad about it. Makes me feel like a complete a-hole.

When I first saw the scene, I didn't laugh. I was like, “OHMYGOD. That is SO romantic. Just like a fairytale.” Also, the music during that part just killed everyone. lol. Hopefully there isn't anything like that in Eclipse…
That scene was supposed to be from a dream sequence, however, Chris decided at last minute to include it as a vision from Alice. I think if he actually shot a vision, it would have been more true to the book. More of a primal scene. It's over quickly, at least.

I totally agree! I loved that part…I was expecting it and didn't find it funny at all. I knew there would be something representing Bella, post-transformation, and I thought them running together (which we all know is in BD) and Bella being able to keep up with Edward, was an awesome thing to see! I will be happy to have my own copy of the movie and watch it without people snickering at it.
Can I just say as a little side note, that there are younger people, I know, who can appreciate the movies and not be immature about them; but I am hoping to see Eclipse in the 21-plus theater at Mall of America. Don't think I can handle another midnight showing with a bunch of screamers! I am a big girl- I scream on the inside!
Please, don't get me wrong, I LOVE all the positive energy and excitement that comes with the movies and the series but when you cant shut up during a movie and you are distracting others, I'm ready to turn around and whoop somebody!

I actually didn't think the post-vamp Bella scene was bad, could have been changed maybe, but I didn't laugh…although, I do get why people did…
The script's (MR's) ending was closer to the book–but of course not as good. BUT it was better than the cliffhanger, imo.

I couldnt believe that the script was better than the movie, cuz im not a fan of MR, but the NM script was SO much better than the Eclipse one!!
Also, NM script was better cuz of the actual sweetness and kisses written in! CW said he was team jacob and u could tell that, given the changes from the script to the screen.
Well, he's not coming back for BD. A few ppl (lol) liked NM better than TL, so he was good for them at least. One thing CW cant do is pick appropriate songs. Wish he couldve left that to someone else. Ugh.

Ya, that line is sweet, and was really the only kiss that was shot properly in NM, but DAMN, Alice shouldve been ready to rip his head off when he was sticking it in the car window when he was asking Bella to stay with him.
Everyone knows neither of them would be that calm being SO close to each other…they stink AND it would burn Jacob's nose…among other things.
Some aggravating scenes in that movie, for sure!

Kristen did an awesome job in the screaming from her nightmares, but where WERE they? We needed to see them, but of course they were cut.

I remember just a very few low chuckles at that scene in the cinema, and then suddenly my friend beside my started to crack up. I got mad and told her to shut up…

You have to remember though, that the vision she had at the time wasn't what was actually going to happen. Alice's visions are subjective, someone can change their mind at any time and the vision will change as well. At the time, Alice had decided on changing Bella herself, so the vision she saw was based off of that decision.
As we all know, Bella's change didn't happen the way they had imagined it to. When she was actually turned into a vampire she wore the dress you're thinking of. However, the vision in the movie had her in a different dress because at the time her changing was decided to happen differently.

Completely agree. The scene itself wasn't terrible.. the music destroyed it and made it cheesetastic! I also wouldn't have made it slow-mo either.

when i watched it in the cinema the whole theater cracked up at that scene
exactly, she should look super sexy, some smoky eyes make up and nice outfit. this was something that my grandma wear to bed
People were laughing at that scene because of the clothes RP and KS were wearing. They were very ugly clothes, in my opinion. Also, I didn't like that scene because the director of BD might feel obligated to use it, and change that scene in BD around to match that clip. Also, when Bella turns into a vampire, I really want her to look like KS did in the Bazaar shoot. That shoot was WAY hot!
I love that scene also!! It is one of my favs!! I got very upset when everyone laughed at it!! I think it is very beautiful. I'm glad it is in the movie. Someone please pass this on to Chris!!

The Bazaar photo shoot is EXACTLY what they should make KS look like in BD… but with normal clothes… or the ones Alice provides in her closet =)… can't wait to see BD!!! I hope & pray they make it 2 movies… 1 movie CANNOT do the book justice & so many fans will be furious… I hope Stephanie Meyer holds her ground
the vampire frolicking scene was a little weird. maybe it would have been better if it werent in slo-mo.
i think all of the clothing in New Moon is horribly wrong. Alices clothes in Volterra for example – jeesus – would suit a 50-year old!!

I couldn't understand why everyone in the theater (including the 2 people I went with) laughed at the running scene, it was driving me a little nuts actually. My best friend and I didn't laugh and totally understood the meaning behind it, when I did ask someone what made it funny to them, they said it was because here they are with the Volturi and tensions were so high and the contrast between the sweet happy run was too far in the opposite directional emotionally. Although this semi-made sense, I still LOVE the scene and love that it is still in, although I really really wish Kristen and Rob were in on the commentary OR that there were multiple commentaries available.
