In order to help pass the time while we wait for Breaking Dawn to be released, we are re-reading the first installment of The Twilight Saga:Twilight!!

On Tuesdays & Fridays I’ll post a thread for each chapter in the book.

Chapter 9: Theory

“I was distracted all weekend, worrying about you…and that possibility tormented me the entire time I was away. It was a very long three days. I really got on Emmett’s nerves.”

After quite the meal, Edward and Bella head to the Volvo while Bella’s head is swirling with questions.

Pg. 180-181 Bella presses on with her questions. Edward explains that he followed Bella’s scent which was how he was able to locate her, which in my opinion is super creepy, lol. Edward admits that he can read minds by hearing people’s thoughts. He then confesses that he cannot however, hear Bella’s thoughts. “Why do you think you can’t hear me? I asked curiously. He looked at me, his eyes enigmatic. “I don’t know. The only guess I have is that maybe your mind doesn’t work the same way the rest of theirs do. Like your thoughts are on the same AM frequency and I’m only getting FM.” He grinned at me, suddenly amused. “My mind doesn’t work right? I’m a freak?” The words bothered me more than they should-probably because his speculation hit home. I’d always suspected as much, and it embarrassed me to have it confirmed. “I hear voices in my mind and you’re worried that you’re the freak,” he laughed.

Pg. 182-184 Bella continues her questions as Edward makes several failed attempts to not answer her, but he has never been able to keep a secret from Bella it seems. Bella then confesses that she didn’t exactly come up with her the theories on her own. Bella kind of throws Jacob Black under the bus by telling Edward the Quileute story that Jacob told her. Realizing that she is making Jake look like a snitch, she then recoils and says that she flirted her way into getting the story. Sidebar-didn’t Jake violate the treaty by telling Bella in the first place? Even though he didn’t believe the Quileute legends isn’t the treaty still violated? Edward realizes that he is caught and also that Bella is quite the smart human, nothing like some of her Forks High classmates.
Pg. 185-186 The secret is exposed!!! Finally! “How old are you?” “Seventeen,” he answered promptly. “And how long have you been seventeen?” “A while.” “Okay. Don’t laugh-but how can you come out during the daytime?” He laughed anyway. “Myth.” “Burned by the sun?” “Myth.” “Sleeping in coffins?” “Myth. I can’t sleep.” “At all?” “Never.” He turned to look at me, with a wistful expression. The golden eyes held mine, and I lost my train of thought. I stared at him until he looked away. “You haven’t asked me the most important question yet.” “Which one is that?” “You aren’t concerned about my diet?” “Oh, that.” “Yes, that. Don’t you want to know if I drink blood?” “Well, Jacob said something about that.” “What did Jacob say?” “He said you didn’t…hunt people. He said your family wasn’t supposed to be dangerous because you only hunted animals.” “He said we weren’t dangerous?” “Not exactly. He said you weren’t supposed to be dangerous. But the Quileutes still didn’t want you on their land, just in case. So was he right? About not hunting people?”

Pg. 187-188 Edward tries his last ditch effort to warn Bella about his kind. Edward tells Bella that his kind is dangerous and should not be taken lightly. He continues to say that even though he and his family do only hunt animals, sometimes it can be hard to restrain and to ignore the call of the blood. For instance them being in the car alone is highly dangerous. Again, another warning but Bella doesn’t really care. Edward explains that he does not want to be a monster and tries extremely hard to be good and we now see this about him. “Its’ very difficult for you now?” I asked. “Yes.” “But you’re not hungry now,” I said confidently-stating, not asking. “Why do you think that?” “You’re eyes. I told you I had a theory. I’ve noticed that people-men in particular-are crabbier when they’re hungry.” He chuckled. “You are observant, aren’t you?” “Were you hunting this weekend, with Emmett?” “Yes. I didn’t want to leave, but it was necessary. It’s a bit easier to be around you when I’m not thirsty.” “Why didn’t you want to leave?” “It makes me…anxious…to be away from you.”
Pg. 190-191 Things get very deep for our twosome, and their feelings become very clear. “I didn’t like it. Not seeing you. It makes me anxious too.” I blushed to be saying this out loud. “Ah,” he groaned quietly. “This is wrong.” “What did I say?” Don’t you see, Bella? It’s one thing for me to make myself miserable, but a wholly other thing for you to be so involved. I don’t want to hear that you feel that way.” His words cut me. “It’s wrong. It’s not safe. I’m dangerous, Bella-please, grasp that.” “No.” “I’m serious,” he growled. “So am I. I told you, it doesn’t matter what you are. It’s too late.” “Never say that. What are you thinking?” he asked, his voice still raw. “Are you crying?” “No,” I said, but my voice cracked. I saw him reach toward me hesitantly with his right hand, but then he stopped and placed it slowly back on the steering wheel.Aww Edward! “I’m sorry.”

Pg. 192-195 This chapter ends with Edward and Bella finding a happy medium and putting their ever so eventful evening behind them enough to talk about school. Edward promises Bella that he will be in school tomorrow. He also invites her to sit at his table, that’s HUGE! Bella is reluctant to get out of the Volvo but chief Swan is home and Bella is supposed to be out with Jessica. Edward offers for Bella to keep his jacket but then Charlie would have a million questions. Soon as Bella gets inside Jessica is ringing the phone off the hook which in my opinion wasn’t a smart move since they were supposed to have just been together. Bella heads upstairs to get a hot shower and heads straight to bed, but not before she has the epiphany of all epiphanies. “About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him-and I didn’t know how potent that part might be-that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.”

Okay, are you dropping dead? Cus I am. These two are too cute! Edward is soo in love and he now knows Bella is too. The first time I read this, all I kept thinking was…how is this going to work? What if he bites her? What will the family think? Lol. What was running through your mind the very first time you read this chapter?

I ♥ how Edward opens up to Bella and allows himself to be vulnerable in honesty of his feelings… Knowing [after reading all the books] that Edward would NEVER fall out of love with her, makes me adore him all the more!!! ♥

I LOVE to read, but the responsibilities of being an adult had moved that into the background. Twilight is my favorite of all the books, mostly because I fell in love all over again, but also because I rediscovered my love of reading.

I love these chapters and they are even more fun when reading MS along with it. I think the thing that struck me the most was when Edward realized Bella felt the same way…

“I didn’t like it. Not seeing you. It makes me anxious too.” I blushed to be saying this out loud. “Ah,” he groaned quietly.

It was also the beginning of my being frustrated with Bella. Most of the time, you can take what another person says 2 ways; it began to appear to me that Bella always took anything Edward said to her the negative way. I know now that she felt he was perfect and that he couldn’t possible love her, but there were a couple times that I wished I could have reached in the book and shaken her!! LOL

btw…..Mrs Edward Cullen THANK YOU for hosting this. I have been reading this site for a long time, never building relationships. I have however, always appreciated yours and Snowy’s opinions and insight. I too miss hearing from both of you more often.

As i read Twilight after watching the movie, i already knew how it would end. That’s why i didn’t have any presumptions. But this part in the book and in the movie was absolutely different. I mean here in the book there wasn’t so much tension as it was in the movie -while Bella’s questioning Edward about him being vampire. Here even if Edward is tensed, you can see he’s still trying to make fun of Bella’s questions. I loved this scene in the movie, it was exciting, esp. when Edward took her up to the mountains to show her how he looked in sunlight. But here Edward wasn’t so relaxed as book Edward.

I’m dangerous, Bella-please, grasp that.” “No.” “I’m serious,” he growled.* {man, if you don’t want her to worry for you or think about you, then what are you doing in Port-Angeles with her in the car?!. Yeah, here LOVE says its words}

I love reading this chapter, Bella’s trying to use her “flirting” powers and after that just outright fails she comes to the point and hears Edward confirming what was supposedly a “scary story”. She reacts pretty well to all that information, I must say.. LOL
I also loved reading this chapter with Midnight Sun next to it. Edward’s always trying to measure her reaction and he’s constantly suprised by how calm she stays. When you read the exact same situation from two perspectives it’s so interresting to see how different they are, but how well they actually fit together. And from most chapters in Twilight, I think this one shows a lot of how different they are, but how imensely cute they are together.
I remember that when I read it I kept saying to myself how cute they were together, despite of the serious talk they were having.
The fact they can talk about school right after having heard/admitted that one of them is a vampire is actually pretty admirable.. I can’t really explain.. LMAO

I have to say that this is another of my favorite chapters. Simple because the banter continues between Bella and Edward from the restaraunt while driving home. In the movie it lacked there converstation which I honestly enjoyed again I love the book so much more, at this point I am unable to stop reading and have already gone on and read far into the book ( the first time, I am trying very hard not to this time), my favorite line was when Bella tells Edward that it doesn’t matter that he is a vampire, and that she is anxious also when she is away from him and doesn’t like it. And when she starts to cry, it made me cry too. I am a real romantic and I cry easily. But, the best when she goes to get out of the car and Edward Dazziles her that was definatley Awesome.:))

i understand that books have to be changed to be adapted into movies, but i was really disappointed that this scene wasnt in the movie. personally, i didnt like her ‘revelations’ in the forest, i much preferred it the way stephenie wrote it in the car. it was up there with the most disappointing changes (which included cutting the blood typing scene and butchering the meadow scene).

i really liked this chapter, even more so in MS from edwards POV. i think its fantastic that bella is still accepting of him and wont listen to his warnings (because really, who would run away from edward cullen?? LOL) i love how this is the first time their feelings are out in the open, and i also love bellas ‘epiphany of all epiphanies’ at the end, which IMO is an awesome blurb, and im really glad they kept that word for word in the movie

Loved when Bella was telling Edward how she figured out he was a vampire and she saids “I decided it doesn’t matter” it shows how she’s fallen for him and it didn’t matter that he wasn’t human. When she cries and when shes getting out of the car and his face is just inches from hers. OMG I would of totally grabbed and kissed him lol.This chapter brought tons of butterflies to my stomach. How I miss when you first fall in love and don’t care about anything, just being with that person. They are admitting their feeling for each other and this is when they start feeling stronger and don’t want to be away from each other.

Oooooh love this chapter! I just fell in love when I read this, how they both admited they were anxious without the other.

Bella continues to fall for Edward in these last two chapters, and I fell for him right along with her. I’d bet that there is not a person on the planet who has read this compelling chapter and just stopped. Not possible. By this point I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with Edward, too. LOL! The first time I read this chapter, I was intrigued by the way he is upset that Bella has feelings for him. He continually tries to warn her: “Ahh, this is wrong, sometimes we make mistakes; me, for example allowing myself to be alone with you. I’m dangerous, Bella, please grasp that.” Those were chilling words. Then after all the warnings, he says, ” I’ll save you a seat at lunch tomorrow.” Haha. Poor conflicted Edward, he’s trying to do the right thing, but he can’t because he loves her.

Riley’sGirl, I loved Bella’s epiphany, too and they ALMOST kept it word for word in the movie: Second, there was a part of him–and I didn’t know how potent that part might be–that thirsted for my blood. In the movie she said DOMINANT instead of potent. Wonder why they changed the word? Even the back cover of my book says dominant like the movie. Go figure.

Yes, book Edward was more relaxed and played it cool in the car. There was one thing about the movie version that bothered me though: In the forest right after “Are you afraid?’ and Bella says, “No”, I didn’t like the rough way Edward grabbed her by the arm and pulled her along saying we’re going to the moutaintop, you need to see what I look like in the sunlight. Book Edward would never have grabbed Bella’s “fragile” arm like that. The way it was done looked disrespectful to me and Edward is all about respect, and at this point in the story, he was still afraid to touch her.

Another thing that I thought was off the mark in the movie scene was when Bella is lying on her bed having the unconditionally-and-irrevocably- in-love-epiphany, and you hear a car horn honk, and then Bella gets up to look out the window and there’s Edward standing against his car waiting for her. Come on!…. Edward, the old-fashioned gentleman, would never, ever honk his horn for Bella to come out! Other than that, I thought it was perfect.

first time i read twilight i was confuse ( what a news!)
because Edward is clearly in love for Bella but he act so angry and rude some times that made me lost. Because is no information enough about him, about his temp, about his moral, and all i know was what Bella knows. that he was a freaking Hot vampire. I was waiting until the end of the book to try understand him, his attitude, but i fail. Of course after New moon he became more clear to me but i was alredy in love for those two anyway.
i think this is the reason SM think about write MS. Edward is a mistery in twilight, and saying the true, there is no history if Edward dont exist. I mean, all Bellas wolrd spin around Edward.

I thought about that myself when I noticed the different wording from book to movie…the difference between dominant and potent. I actually think dominant would be more appropriate here. The term potent indicates strength, whereas dominant indicates something overpowering another. Something can be very strong (potent) but not necessarily influence a decision, but an emotion that becomes dominant over another emotion would definately influence a decision. Bella’s blood was very potent, but would Edward’s desire to kill her dominate his desire to love her? I know, it’s all semantics and we get the idea, but I did stop and think about that for a moment.

I sooo, agree with you. Seeing Edward grab her arm to go to the sunlight and honk his horn for her to come out was to me was like fingernails scraping a blackboard. Come on people, this is Edward. Even in my young days an ordinary guy wouldn’t have “manhandled” a girl, and he most certainly would have gone to the door an politely knocked. Oh well, at least Stephanie got it correct in the book, but really, there would have been no extra words or actions to have done it correctly in the movie!

p.s. when I see pictures of E and B in a car I ALWAYS think of this song spoof on youtube where they are leaving the baseball scene and bella goes “where are we going?” and Edward then responds in the spoof “Funkytown!” lol

I was making strufuli (ok i am horrible at spelling even in italian) with my mum yesterday and when we put the sprinkle thingys (i know they have a name just can’t think of it) on the strufuli were glittering and I (being the freak I am) say “they are like vampires in the sunlight!” and pick two pieces of strufuli up and like i am playing with dolls go “do i dazzle you” “frequently” earning me freaked out stares from my brothers’ friends who were there.

First of all, there are no words to explain the feeling that one experiences in this chapter. I saw the movie first and that mystery that confounds them was the part of first love that stuns you and also dazzled you that you just can’t explain. Then I read the book and this chapter brings it all together in how they can no longer deny this feeling. It doesn’t matter who or what you are because she knows that she is in deep and doesn’t want this excitement of love be lost or go away because it’s too powerful. Love is powerful and life altering and they were already altered from the beginning and this was getting some of those mysterious questions answered to confirm what was already knew and felt.
I think we can all say that for Twilight, we are unconditionally and irrevocably in love with You!
This right here sealed the deal for me and it gives me chills every time I read it!

I noticed that too in the movie, and asked my older brother (who hates twilight but has a HUGE vocabulary) about the difference between potent and dominant and he gave me a similar explanation to what twiheart said

This is one of my favorite chapters too, those there are hardly any chapters that aren’t my favorite. I loved the whole resteraunt scene in the book, and was kind of annoyed in the way the movie showed it. I didn’t cry in twilight, i’m actually not sure why, I did however cry for the first time over a book (and I had read many many books that were sadder) when Edward left in New Moon.
Sometimes I wish I had dazzling powers, it would be so cool to be really captivating, I am (like Bella ) quite the wall flower.

I came into theTwlight world after seeing the movie 1st, then reading the book ,in the movie you could feel this bond between Bella and Edward, but when reading the book you get to experience it so much more,this growing love between them. It made me love Twlight even more. : )

Twigrandma, I always like your posts and your opinions. And again I agree with you. Though I love this scene in the movie, yes book Edward would never grab Bellas arm. And one more thing, when they reached to the mountaintop Edward just put her and didn’t look whether she was ok or not.But in the book after their ” travel” in the forest Bella felt dizzy(it didn’t happen in the movie) and Edward worried for her,asked how she felt.

Yeah, in the book he always lets her decide if she wants to go with him or not. I loved how he always waited her everytime near her house.But in the movie this part was different, but I loved it too, esp.when everybody stares them in shock at school.lol.

Have not seen you for a little while school keeping you busy? I was a wall flower too and probable still am even at my older age. I always feel like I want to disappear when I am in a group of people so I understand. Yes, I cried when Edward left to I am a big cry baby and honestly I cried many times tru the series. Yes, I wish at had more than dazzling powers but we can dream. LOL. Happy Christmas to you. )

Yeah, when Edward and Bella reached the mountaintop, he did sort of uncharacteristically drop her off his back without any concern. I noticed that, too. I’d bet Stephenie would not approve.

Yes, the movie makes more of a big deal out of the first day E and B arrive at school together and of course, like you, I loved it. And how cool is it that Bella never has to wait for Edward because he always appears like magic in her driveway or at her door. That’s one more reason I love him.

Don’t feel lonely, EL304! During a thunderstorm one day at work, we heard a loud peal of thunder and without thinking, I said, “Uh oh, the Cullens are playing baseball!” and instead of laughing, my co-workers gave me some freaked out stares, too! LOL!! They think I’m wacko.

I remember the first time I read this chapter hoping they would kiss when Bella was getting out of the car and giving his jacket back. I loved how SM put in the book how Bella loved his scent and would get dizzy when she got too close to him. I have always been affected by how people smell. There are times when a certain odor will bring back a strong memory for me. I felt a connection with that part of Bella’s character. I have always felt a good smellin man is a sexy man! Yep, I can definitely relate..hehe.

Thank you for sharing. Re-read is such a treat for me. Twilight brought me back to reading and re-living “first love”. I so appreciate this web-site and thank you for the love you put into it. I am retired and “Twilight” has filled my life. It is heart warming to dream of the possible mirage of an “Edward” in life. I think Robert and Kristen nailed it. I don’t think we realize how lucky we are to have them as the actor’s for the main character’s. Love the movies and “Midnight Sun”.

I love this. I love this dangerous, dark Edward who is falling in love and can’t do anything about that.. That’s why Twilight is my favorite book, there is a dark side to Edward that is so intriguing. Bella is a great character too, I can totally relate to her and that is something that makes this book so great.
Yet I don’t like the way the movie translates the little moments Edward and Bella have, there’s something missing, Edward almost is just not as deep as he is in the book. It was a total disappointment when I saw the movie..

I think Bella is very insecure, she doesn’t think she could ever deserves Edward’s love, it’s like she can’t believe what is happening to her because it’s too good to be true. I understand this way of thinking.. Love LOVE Twilight

As much as I love the movie (because I do. It has a certain magic to it.. It got me hooked to the Saga in the first place ), I would love to see the movie being redone, but then EXACTLY how it’s in the book.
It would be interresting to see, if it really only works on paper or if on screen it has as much appeal to it

I would also like to see “Twilight” movie redone. I don’t think Summit took the series seriously and it was low budget, but non-the-less, after watching it a few times, it stole my heart away. I would love to see it redone interspersing Edward’s thoughts (Midnight Sun) as well, so we (or moviegoers that didn’t read the books–boyfriends, hubby’s, etc) could better understand the bloodlust in biology, the tentative and somewhat fearful way he acted around Bella (the siren call of her blood as strong as his need to be near her) that some viewers interpreted as wimpy. And for pete’s sake, it wouldn’t have taken any more minutes for Edward to introduce her gently to the meadow or politely knock on her door for school than it did for him to grab her arm (which would have crushed it), throw her on his back, dump her, or to honk his horn for her. A “Twilight” redo? Not gonna happen; I’m just thankful they DID decide to film the series. (and I still pray for Midnight Sun and EPV on the others…that probably won’t happen either).

Yeah that would be great! But it would be much better if it was like TV series. I mean there are a lot of TV series (with 4-5 episodes) based on the books and they deliver almost all the details of the book. Maybe it will happen some day in the future, who knows

I hated jessica in here how did she dare to call bella so early I thing that was very unnice from her and she knew what she was doing ´cause she ask bella how did she get back so fast she was definitly gonna put bella in a hard situation with charlie but anyway I love their conversation I love that he opens to her and tell her so many things of course one of my fav the epiphany of all epiphanies and I also love how edward is so sorry when bella cries

yeah I would love a tv serie just like pride and perjudice from the BBC maybe some day twilight would be great but I can´t imagine other cast so that may be a problem
