Twilight

twilight dvd review The first reviews of the Twilight DVD are starting to pop up on the web. Here are some excerpts from the first couple we’ve found:

KansasCity.com: Likes the special features overall but says the seven-part documentary fails to add much insider info. The best part is the funny commentary by Robert Pattinson, where he makes fun of himself quite a few times. Examples–(WARNING: SPOILERS!)

•During the school cafeteria scene where an iconic apple bounces off Edward’s feet and into his hands: “Wow, he’s a superhuman moron. … He wears lipstick, has a little bouffant and does little circus acts.”

•A make-out scene with his human girlfriend, Bella (Stewart): “I’ve got one of those butt chins” — explaining his usual stubble and beards off camera. During other pivotal scenes Pattinson pipes in to point out his “scraggly sideburns,” “effeminate hands,” “sculpted eyebrows” and a clueless “where am I?” gaze.

•In the forest, when Edward is warning Bella to stay away:

Edward: “Do you know what vampires eat?”

Pattinson (in a high, nasal voice): “Cheeseburgers!”

SciFiWire: Dissapointed with special features, thinks it is a missed opportunity to expand and explain the Twilight universe to outsiders rather than re-hash stuff fans already know.

A seven-part documentary purports to delve into the production itself, but despite a wealth of behind-the-scenes footage that is virtually indistinguishable from making-of material on any other effects-laden epic, no one, not even Twilight creator Stephenie Meyer, manages to qualify why this series struck such a nerve. That said, the “Comic-Con Phenomenon” featurette certainly documents the overwhelming, Beatlesque mania that accompanied the cast and crew’s appearance at the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con.

Ultimately, it’s safe to assume that most people who love Twilight will at least like this DVD/ Blu-ray release. After all, it almost literally thanks them for their support and patronage, citing them as the reason for the film’s success, not to mention the fact that it provides them with what must be all remaining footage via two collections of extended and deleted scenes. But for people who believe that there is something more substantive in these books than a series of dreamy-eyed exchanges between two people with perfect complexions, it would have been nice to see something included that could convince others of that depth or meaning as well.

Principal Forks High TwilightThe University of Washington Alumni Magazine has an interesting interview with the principal of Forks High, the school from the Twilight Saga books. He talks about all the curious fans that visit nowadays–

We’ll walk out onto the street and see them standing in front of our building, taking pictures by the sign. And you can pretty much count on a large number of fans coming during breaks. Spring break was huge last year. And because it’s staggered when different schools around the country take their breaks, we had it for about two months solid-just an astronomical number of people coming by, taking pictures and walking through the school. During the summer, there are people every single day. School’s not in session, obviously, but there’s still some staff around, and they come up and knock on the door, and we let them in and say hi and show them around. Last year, the city dedicated Sept. 13 as Stephenie Meyer Day, and we opened up the school for Twilight tours. And we had hundreds of people coming to the building that day.

200903121314.jpg Amanda Bell at the Examiner wonders if the stories of Twilight being nearly 100% tween-based are true. She asks–

Critics of the Twilight Series suggest (sometimes often) that there is only one type of fan of the series: that which consists of young, teenage girls. However, the demography of a Twilight fan might be slightly more complex and vast than critics of the series and its popularity would like to admit.

200903111503.jpg Reelzchannel has posted an article that asks a few fansites what we want to see in the Twilight DVD extras– here are our choices:

  • I’d love to see bloopers of any sort — the more embarrassing, the better!
  • Deleted kissing scenes a-plenty!
  • Listening to the audio commentary from RPatz, KStew, and Catherine Hardwicke will be a real treat.
  • The Robert Pattinson piano montage sounds very intriguing.
  • Supposedly there will be a New Moon teaser on the Blu-Ray edition — that will be very exciting for NewMoonMovie.org to cover!

Check out all the picks from the rest of the fansites over at Reelzchannel! Which extras are you most looking forward to? Also, check out the thumbnail from our very first design incarnation–before we moved from two columns to three!

200903111409.jpgDo you think the Twilight deleted scenes we’ve seen so far have been cut for a good reason? EW Popwatch thinks so–

If you’ve seen the sneak peek of three deleted Twilight scenes from the March 21 DVD release, do you think director Catherine Hardwicke was right to trim them from the final film? I’d have to say yes, yes, and yes. While in theory, a second bedroom kiss sounds like a good idea, this one would’ve taken away from the intensity of the, um, more stirring session in the movie.
